He's almost at the end of his contract and scores goals in the Championship. So maybe a relatively safe buy if things don't go our way this season.

This is a good point!
And what's to say he won't  score goals. Also if we don't have the dosh then he is worth a punt if cheap.

And who do you suggest? We need someone in, asap, who can hit the ground running,  score some goals and help keep us up. That's all we need to be concerned with atm, staying up. Never mind the next 4/5 seasons!

Agree completely.   Unfortunately I don't Gayle has proven at this level that he's worth a buy to play in our current offense.    We don't just need our attacker to "score some goals".   Mitro can score some goals.  He just hasn't been able to do it consistently at this level.   Imo, at this level, neither has Gayle.   And based on his numbers over the past 12 months...I wouldn't want to spend money on him when he's likely not to give us 80 minutes a game.

If Scott thinks Gayle can do a job, and feels he can fit in with the team then I'm all for this - he's experienced and  can score at this level.

If  we can get him, get him, there isn't much time to mess around, and i trust those more in the know than myself.

look at Babel,  noone thought he would do anything, yet he was one of our best players, and we wished he'd been with us from the start of the season.

I dont get the obsession with Babel

Yes he was amazing when he played for us but that is two years ago

Its like saying Mullery could still do a job for us

Spot on.

No matter how good someone might be in seasons to come, we can't be doing with buying a player who will need a dozen matches to get up to speed. Because, by the time he is, it'll probably be too late.

But Dwight isn't up to speed.   He's not a good EPL striker.   His work rate isn't up to par...  so why would we buy him if, as I think we both agree, the idea is to get a player to help us stay up?

Sounds a reasonably safe bet and is probably better than any one we have at the moment but why is he not getting games where he is.

This.

QuoteThe striker has broken down three times with injuries during Bruce's stint as boss but has played in the last three matches as sub, scoring the winner against West Bromwich Albion to add to his four-goal tally from last season.

And this..

QuoteHe picked up a knee injury in the pre-season victory over Crewe and it was later discovered he had damaged medial collateral ligaments.

People are already on RLC for not playing like he's 100% healthy, but we want to replace him on the pitch with Dwight Gayle?

Dan Sturridge for me....but, what do I know

RaySmith

He has  featured  for Newcastle in recent games, though not a starter hassn't he?

Maybe  he doesn't suit the  manager's  tactics, and they have an expensive new young strikers   anyway, but that doesn't mean Gayle can't do a  job for us, and  score goals.

All signings are a gamble, whoever they are, but as i said,  if Scott  and staff think he can do a job, help us score more....
We've certainly been linked with him for long enough.

See if he comes , anyway. If he does i'll give him a chance.

Buy?   As in lock in an unrealiable, non-premier league proven striker that can't give us a consistent 80 minutes a game?

Heck no.

And the main reason?   Even if he's only 15 million, I'd rather add that 15 to another 15 and get a 30 million striker that could be our main premier league striker for the next 4-5 seasons.

I don't rate Gayle at the EPL level at all.  Better than RLC and Cav?   Sure...at finishing.   Not sure he's better at anything else.

He'll probably cost about £5m tops, at that value he's worth a punt even if we keep him should we go down because he can score in this championship and with the way we play I think he'd be a decent gamble at the right price. Yes there are better players in foreign leagues that might cost about £10m+ but it's very rare that you find someone like Pogrebnyak in January who comes in and makes an instant impact and gambling on that isn't a good idea. Tbh we should be looking at Gayle and Demarai Gray/ S Dembele because these are players out of contact in summer and we could structure deals with a lower up front payment and a bonus if we stay up, meaning they haven't cost much and can become squad players next year when we go and buy new starters

I saw him score two late goals against us on our last day in the Prem way back in May 2014, he was so strong for Palace that day, really dominant. And I know what you're thinking, that was 6 years ago when he was 24.

But when Steve Bruce threw him on late against us a few weeks ago I was nervous and sure enough he scored one and could have had another.

I like Gayle very much. I say yes.
There is only one Fulham Football Club.

no, we want to replace one goal in 31 Games cav with Gayle. Rubens will hopefully be replaced by someone else.
CHRIS MARTIN IS SO BAD,  WE NOW PRAISE HIM FOR MAKING A RUN.

Asotosyios

So the suggestion is to buy a 31-year-old injury prone striker, who has barely played 900 minutes since last season.

Thank you, but no - prefer to have Mitrovic or even Kamara up front.

During Dwight Gayle's EPL career, he has played 123 games out of the 207 games that he was at an EPL club and he has scored 26 goals with 6 assists. We have 23 games left, so assuming he is still at the peak of his career and continues at his previous performance, could expect him to play 14 games, to score 3 goals, and to get 1 assist. In the first half of 18/19, Kamara played 13 games, scored 2 non-penalty goals, therefore Gayle is a 2 goal upgrade.

Well, I was just using Babel as an example - the attitudes towards him when  he signed re signing  Gayle, who could maybe do a Babel, who wasn't  seen as a good signing.

Though i  have argued that  Babel would have been a good signing earlier this  season, but now i read he's been ill.

But, with respect, it wouldn't have been like saying that Mullery could do a good job for us now. Though  maybe like arguing like Mullery could do a good job when he did return at the end of his career - when he led us  to an FA Cup Final.
I'm losing track here.....

Gayle could be a  decent signing, but I trust Scott's judgement.

Yes, but maybe those three goals could be a hat trick at Burnley!

And, that £5m spent on Gayle might mean we have to sell Tosin next season.

Bassey the warrior

He's 31 and will be 32 in October. Deal makes no sense to me. Would rather go down than be stuck with him on a long term contract as he goes into decline, especially if his injury record continues in the same vein.

FulhamStu

No from me, need. To unearth someone from abroad or invest in Dembele from Peterborough, one for now and the future.
