Taking Chances

Mark Hughes has underlined the importance of taking chances when they present themselves ahead of Saturday's visit of Sunderland.

After a series of positive displays that haven't reaped the rewards that the team's performances have warranted, the Fulham boss is hoping the Whites can turn promise into the hard currency of three points when his former Manchester United team-mate Steve Bruce brings his Black Cats to Craven Cottage

"We're looking to win the game," outlined Hughes. "As the home team, the onus is on us to be positive and try and get the result.

"We were a little bit frustrated in our last home game against Bimingham who are similar to us in terms of their organisation, and Sunderland have the same capacity to frustrate, so we don't want a repeat of what happened in that second-half when we had the vast majority of possession but were unable to unpick the lock.

"So hopefully against Sunderland it'll be a different story and we'll take the game to them. We can always create chances in a game, that's a given, but it's about executing the key moments and seeing out the game."

Entering this weekend's fixture programme, Fulham find themselves 17th in the Barclays Premier League, whilst our visitors sit in seventh, but in what remains a remarkably close table, just two wins could propel the Whites into the top half of the table, and the Manager has seen enough from his team in recent games to convince him that such a course of events is a distinct possibility.

"We feel we're better than our position illustrates, but there are reasons for it," he considered. "On occasions we've had opportunities to win games but not taken them, and we've drawn too much this season. The way the league is this year all teams are very close and a couple of back-to-back wins shoots you very quickly up the division.

"The difference between our record and Sunderland's is just a couple of wins so we know that if we get back to winning ways – and we're confident that we have the capacity to do that – it's only a matter of time [before our position improves].

"We'd be more concerned if we weren't playing well, but we don't think that's the case. We felt we showed last weekend against the team that's currently top of the division that we can compete very well in this league. What we need to do, obviously, is convert chances when they arise and when we're dominant in games we've got to capitalise on that.

"Maybe that's a consequence of the attacking players that we have unavailable, but performance-wise we're not far from where we need to be."

The fixture pits Hughes against Steve Bruce, a man he played alongside for seven years at Old Trafford, enjoying remarkable success under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson. And the Fulham boss has nothing but praise for the managerial qualities of his Sunderland counterpart.

"He's at a good club where he's had some money to spend and it looks as though he's forming a good Premier League team, which is what he's done at a number of clubs. So it doesn't surprise me that the team at Sunderland is forming as well as it is.

"Quite a number of ex-United players seem to have gone on to the next stage, maybe to try and emulate Sir Alex, not that any of us ever will, but we're trying to make a go of it!"

Fulham are likely to welcome Carlos Salcido back to the starting line-up after the Mexican trained this week without adverse reaction. However, Mousa Dembélé is not due to return to training until early next week. Matthew Briggs meanwhile, has had to undergo surgery to release pressure in his calf muscle – an operation to prevent further problems rather than reactive to any serious injury.

Fulham boss rubbishes Clint Dempsey rumours

Dec 10 2010

Clint Dempsey

MARK Hughes has slapped a not-for-sale sign on Clint Dempsey.

The six-goal American has been linked with a move away from Craven Cottage, with Liverpool and Wolfsburg reported to be trailing the Texan.

But Fulham boss Hughes says none of his players are available.

He said: "I am sure there is interest in Clint, as there is with most good players.

"There has been no contact from any clubs in terms of Clint or anyone else.

"He's very happy here and enjoying his football."

Mark Hughes rules out Fulham move for Mexican keeper

FULHAM boss Mark Hughes has denied Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa is coming to Craven Cottage on trial.

The £9million-rated 25-year-old is pals with Whites full-back Carlos Salcido, and is reported to be heading to SW6.

Mark Schwarzer signed a new deal with Fulham last week, while youngster David Stockdale is also waiting in the wings.

And Hughes has played down any move for Club America keeper Ochoa.

He said: "He hasn't been to the club and he hasn't trained with us.

"It's not the case [that he's coming on trial]."
