Rohr Explains Why Maja Didn't Play Much At Bordeaux; Another Fulham Player On His Radar

Gernot Rohr has been reminded that Josh Maja scored a brace on his full English Premier League debut for Fulham in their recent 2-0 victory against Everton ahead of his Super Eagles squad announcement in the coming days.

The Fulham academy product has not figured for the three-time African champions since making his debut off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Ukraine in September 2019.

Rohr explained that the striker didn't get a look-in because he wasn't playing much at French club Bordeaux but hopes he can continue with his good form with a view to a possible recall to the national team.

The German chose not to reveal the identity of the player but mentioned that he is keeping tabs on one other Nigerian player on the books of Fulham apart from Ola Aina.

Central defender Tosin Adarabioyo, winger Ademola Lookman and central midfielder Josh Onomah are the other players with Nigerian background playing for Fulham's first team.

"Coming back. I saw him (Maja) a lot in Bordeaux but he didn't play normal in Bordeaux, the new coach said he's not good enough," Rohr said to News Central TV.

"He's returning to England, scoring two goals, so we hope he can continue and stay for long.

"We have two other players in Fulham."

Tosin has played non-binding games for England's youth teams while Lookman and Onomah were key members of the Young Lions squad that won the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup.

Bruce talks of improvements but the irony is that Fulham have done so - and the stats prove it

Steve Bruce is arguably facing the biggest game of his Newcastle United career when they face Wolves this weekend

Steve Bruce is convinced Newcastle United will stay up - and as the norm after games, the head coach talks of positives and channelling his inner Steve McClaren by suggesting that the results will come.

But the reality is, the results are not coming, and don't look like coming either.

Newcastle United have now lost 12 of their last 16 games - wins over Everton and Southampton giving Bruce and his side six points which now are proving even more crucial than first thought.

The Magpies play Wolves on Saturday evening knowing that defeat would allow Fulham the chance to draw level on points if they beat Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

The 10-point gap that appeared between Fulham and Newcastle following that victory over Southampton could be down to zero.

The stats since Christmas make for alarming reading.

The Premer League since Christmas Day

As you can see Newcastle are bottom of the form table - collecting just 0.6 points per game.

In real terms - that equates to eight defeats, two draws and only two wins since Christmas Day.

Even more alarming is Fulham's standing - 15th, collecting 1.1 points per game.

They've lost just three in that time and while they've won just two, they've collected a further seven points from draws.

United's defensive frailties are also harrowingly clear - they've conceded 20 goals in those 12 games - compared to just the 10 have Fulham shipped.

And there's the irony.

Bruce is adamant that Newcastle are improving. He talks of 'being happy' with second halves or the performance put in until a certain timestamp - it was 60 minutes against Manchester United, in which Newcastle conceded two goals - and yet the stats suggest otherwise.

United are sinking like a rock, and it's Fulham with a real platform to shout about progress and improvement since the turn of the year.

The number of games lost by United since Christmas is only matched by Sheffield United, the goals conceded only bettered by Crystal Palace (25) and Southampton (22) and the goals scored? Only Southampton, West Brom and Sheffield United have scored less.

Of course, context is needed. In this time, Newcastle United have played Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester and Everton - while Fulham have faced Brighton, West Brom, Burnley and Sheffield United.

Fulham have also played Chelsea, Manchester United, Spurs, Leicester and Everton in the same time - and had the same results against them as Newcastle did.

But there is no getting away from the fact, Fulham have some momentum while the Magpies do not, and they are the side Fulham have in their sights and for all Bruce talks of positives, it's points which are needed.

Bruce talks of changing styles - speaking after the defeat to Manchester United, he said: "We've made changes, and changed the way we've gone about things - that is obviously going to take a bit of time."

This angers fans who interpret it as a dig at Bruce's predecessor Rafa Benitez, or who look at West Ham who sit fourth in the Premier League table, a job David Moyes took on four months after Bruce joined Newcastle.

A defeat to Wolves on Saturday won't afford Bruce the chance to reel off the same post-match views of being 'pleased for an hour' or talk of 'getting the balance right.'

Saturday is arguably Bruce's most important game of his United career.

Report: West Ham, Everton and Fulham want Liverpool-linked Bremer

Italian site Toro News have claimed the Premier League race is hotting up for Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer, with West Ham United, Fulham and Everton all considering the Brazilian, who has recently been linked with Liverpool.

Bremer, 23, has caught the eye over the past couple of seasons with his performances for Torino – becoming renowned as a goalscoring defender. Clocking up 63 appearances for Torino, he has scored nine goals since his move from Atletico Mineiro.

The powerful defender has scored four goals in 19 Serie A appearances this season, and that has attracted interest from the Premier League. The Mirror claim Liverpool have made Bremer their top summer target, who is valued at less than £10million.

But the latest report says that Everton, West Ham and Fulham have joined Liverpool in the race for Bremer – who is set to spark a summer window royal rumble between Premier League clubs. He has a contract at Torino until the summer of 2023.

TBR's view – Which club should Bremer join?

Liverpool need centre-backs and if Bremer joins, he would probably be first reserve – even if Ozan Kabak stays and Joel Matip returns from injury. That would be a good move for Bremer, given he would get plenty of game time.

But if he wants to be first choice, then elsewhere might be better for him. At Fulham, there is no doubt he would be in the starting XI. Everton have Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina – so Fulham is a better option.

West Ham also have numerous options especially with Craig Dawson set to sign permanently. If he wants to start, then Fulham is the best of the four clubs – but Liverpool would surely be his ideal move given he would be first cover.

Premier League could BLOCK fans from attending games on the last day - including Fulham's potential relegation-decider against Newcastle - over sporting integrity fears despite Government planning to allow supporters back from May 17

Boris Johnson's roadmap out of lockdown stated that up to 10,000 fans or 25 per cent of a stadium's capacity could be welcomed back from May 17
The final day of the 2020-21 Premier League season falls six days after on May 23
Premier League is yet to make a decision on fans' return and will consult clubs
There are concerns the welcoming of fans could give teams an unfair advantage
Fans could be in when Fulham host Newcastle in a potential relegation-decider

The Premier League could block supporters from attending matches on the final day of the season due to concerns over sporting integrity.

As part of Boris Johnson's announcement on Monday regarding a roadmap out of lockdown, up to 10,000 fans or 25 per cent of a stadium's capacity (whichever is smallest) could attend sporting events from May 17.

That would make the final day of the Premier League season - May 23 - as marking the return of supporters inside football stadiums.

The Premier League has yet to decide whether fans will be allowed back in, however, with 'clubs to be consulted on sporting integrity issues.'

It is not guaranteed that fans will be back in for Fulham's game against Newcastle on May 23

Fans were banned from stadiums in March 2020, and returned briefly before lockdown three

Final-day games include Fulham hosting Newcastle at Craven Cottage, which could well prove to be a relegation-decider - three points currently separate the two sides.

Other notable games include Leicester hosting Tottenham where European football for both clubs could be on the line while Manchester City - currently 10 points clear at the top of the league - could lift the Premier League trophy at home to Everton with fans inside the Etihad Stadium.

However, there are concerns that supporters being allowed in for just the final day could give an unfair advantage to teams playing at home, particularly if away teams have had no fans inside their own stadium all season.

Speaking in the Commons on Monday, the Prime Minister revealed plans for a cautious return of supporters to attend top level sport in time for the last round of Premier League fixtures, the European Championships, Wimbledon and the Rugby League World Cup, among other stellar events in the nation's summer of sport.

From May 17, indoor venues will be allowed to admit up to a maximum of 1,000 spectators, or half their capacity if that figure is lower.

For outdoor events, there will be a maximum of 4,000 fans allowed, or half a venue's capacity (whichever figure is lower).

However, at the biggest stadiums, with a capacity above 16,000, such as Wembley and Premier League football grounds, a maximum of 10,000 fans will be allowed, or a quarter of capacity (whichever figure is lower).

The roadmap document said: 'The Government will also make a special provision for large, outdoor, seated venues where crowds can be safely distributed, allowing up to 10,000 people or 25 per cent of total seated capacity, whichever is lower.

'In addition, pilots will run as part of the Events Research Programme to examine how such events can take place without the need for social distancing using other mitigations such as testing.'

While clubs and top-flight officials are thrilled at the prospect of supporters coming back to stadiums, the timing raises a challenge for the integrity of the competition and has left the Premier League with a headache.

League officials fully expect clubs to the raise the matter with them, since so much is riding on the last round of games, but they stress nothing has been decided.

The Premier League has consulted clubs on each step in response to the pandemic, and this issue will be no different.

There is currently no date fixed for the next shareholders' meeting, but the item will no doubt be on the agenda when it is scheduled.

In the event that there is no consensus, it is expected that clubs wanting to challenge the return of fans would have to push for a vote, and 14 clubs would be needed to carry the motion.

However, in the end it may be academic since the roadmap out of lockdown stresses the return of fans - and all other easing of Covid restrictions - depends upon falling infections rates, hospitalisations and deaths resulting from the virus and continued roll-out of the vaccine.

If these conditions are not met, fans will not be allowed to attend any event.

What really happened amid claims Fulham broke Premier League loan player rules vs Sheffield United

Blades' fans have brought into question whether Scott Parker's side were allowed to select so many loan players for their relegation clash last weekend

Ademola Lookman is one of seven loan players Fulham have this season.

Sheffield United's defeat to Fulham saw their faint hopes of Premier League survival effectively extinguished.

It leaves Chris Wilder's team with a mountain to climb. His side are rock-bottom, and are 14 points from safety.

They have just 13 games remaining, and realistically they would have to win at least eight of those to even be in contention to stay up.

The contest at Craven Cottage saw the hosts seal a 1-0 win, courtesy of Ademola Lookman. Amazingly, the winger was one of SEVEN loan players that Fulham used that night.

Boss Scott Parker started six and brought another, Mario Lemina, off the bench as one of his three subs. That means exactly half of their side consisted of loanees.

Fulham have two players on loan from fellow English clubs - Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea) and Lemina (Southampton) - with five others borrowed from European clubs.

They are: Alphonse Areola (PSG), Joachim Andersen (Lyon), Lookman (RB Leipzig), Josh Maja (Bordeaux) and Ola Aina (Torino).

It was something that was questioned by Unitedites in the wake of the result. Many asked whether it was legal to have so many temporary players under the Premier League's rules.

Indeed, the competition's handbook states that:

- Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.

- The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.

- Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.

- A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.

However, the above rules only apply to domestic loans - so clubs borrowing from another club in the top flight or England.

Fulham have ticked this box as they only have the two from fellow English clubs.

There appears to be no cap on the amount of foreign loans that clubs can have.

A PL spokesperson recently told one of our sister sites that "international loans do not count as part of the quota either".

And when asked by Yorkshire Live to confirm this, another spokesperson confirmed today that "an international loan does not fall under the League's definition of Temporary Transfer."

United had four players on loan last season, upon their return to the top flight.

They signed Dean Henderson and Mo Besic on season-long arrangements before Richairo Zivkovic and Panos Retsos joined up in January.

This term Chris Wilder's side have just Ethan Ampadu on loan, from Chelsea.

Fulham fans left scratching their heads as young forward scores for QPR in U23 clash – have the Rs made a new signing?

QPR's U23 side faced Ipswich Town's U23s today, and fans might be interested to see Fulham's Martell Taylor-Crossdale featuring.

QPR are becoming synonymous for recruiting unwanted youth into their own development squad, before bettering them and selling them on.

Ebere Eze is the most obvious of those recent examples and several could yet follow in his footsteps – the next could be Taylor-Crossdale.

The 21-year-old is formerly of the Chelsea academy. He joined up with Fulham in 2019 and last would season make his first-team debut in the League Cup, but he's not featured for the Whites since.

Now though, Fulham fans seem to believe that QPR have signed Taylor-Crossdale, after Ipswich Town mentioned him in their live tweets from today's game:

He's a player who Fulham fans were keen to see more of. There's been no official mention of his movements but now with Taylor-Crossdale featuring for QPR's development side, it either suggests he's moved there or is on trial there.

A loan move wouldn't seem to make sense, but he'd certainly be someone who QPR would be interested in and Fulham fans have been left searching for an answer as to what's happened the English attacker.

More interestingly though is that Taylor-Crossdale scored the equaliser for QPR today, direct from a free-kick.

QPR fans will be eager to hear about Taylor-Crossdale and should he be on trial at the club or even have signed, then he's another youngster that could be working his way into Mark Warburton's starting line-up.

What does the future hold for Cyrus Christie at Nottingham Forest?

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton will have a number of decisions to make on some of his players' futures in the summer.

The Reds are currently looking to cement their place in the division and put further daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

The priority will then be to trim the squad, with decisions to be made on those out of contract and those currently on loan at the club.

Cyrus Christie is a player who has divided opinions amongst Forest fans since arriving on a season-long loan deal from Fulham in the summer.

The right-back has often frustrated at times with his lack of end product in the final third, but his defensive performances have improved under Hughton's tutelage.

Whether there is a future at the City Ground for Christie, though, remains to be seen.

Reports from the Mirror have recently claimed that Forest are doubtful over adding Christie to their squad on a permanent basis.

The full-back is believed to be on a hefty salary, and Forest may struggle to afford those wages in the long run. With no revenue from ticket sales coming in, it's one that may not be sustainable for the long-term.

Christie is out of contract at Fulham in the summer, so it remains to be seen whether the London club offer him a a new deal or not. This largely depends on what division Fulham find themselves in next season, with Scott Parker's side still in the Premier League relegation zone.

But Jordan Gabriel is a young full-back who is currently impressive away from the City Ground on loan at Blackpool, and could be given a chance to replace Christie and earn a starting berth under Hughton next season.

Christie can only afford to concentrate on his form between now and the end of the campaign, as Forest look to steer well clear of the drop zone.

Winger gives reasons why Newcastle will stay up despite Fulham pressure

Allan Saint-Maximin is unconcerned about the possibility of a relegation battle as he feels Newcastle will soon start winning games.

The Magpies are now just three points above 18th-placed Fulham. They have picked up only six points from 10 games while the Cottagers are making progress.

Scott Parker's side have taken eight points from their last five games. They were 10 points behind the Tynesiders earlier in February but are now within touching distance.

It all points to a nervous run-in to the end of the season, with plenty of twists and turns expected. There has been a lot of negativity at St James' Park since the turn of the year.

Early-season optimism has been replaced by repeated cries for Bruce to be sacked. Relegation would surely signal the death knell for his time in the dugout.

But former Nice star Saint-Maximin does not feel it will reach that stage. While acknowledging that things could be better, the Frenchman remains bullish over their prospects of beating the drop.

"I don't worry a lot because I know we can win a lot of games," he told NUFC TV. "You saw against Everton.

"You see that we have the power to do that but we just have to do that more, to do that every game, and that's the problem I think for me.

"But we work a lot in training. We try to do everything to be better and we just have to keep improving."

Make or break time

Saint-Maximin's positivity will be put to the test in the next few weeks. Struggling clubs must pick up points against the so-called lesser teams to survive.

The next four games sees Newcastle face Wolves, West Brom, Aston Villa and Brighton. Fulham face a much tougher run, with Crystal Palace, Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City on the horizon.

Therefore March could prove to be a pivotal month of the campaign for both clubs. The north-east outfit have beaten West Ham, Burnley, Everton (twice), Palace, West Brom and Southampton this term.

And they will need to add to the win column if they are to retain their top-flight status. Bruce is certainly upbeat for the remainder of the season.

He felt there were positive signs in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Manchester United.

"My message to the supporters is that I'm convinced we'll be OK," he said after the Old Trafford reverse.

The Sean Davis Column

Like I said on the Fulham Fix, the way we've been playing was giving the fans hope, we just weren't getting the results our performances merited. But the last couple of weeks have been great for us, and that hope is getting stronger and stronger. It's not just that we've got a glimmer of hope, we've got a real chance now. The lads are playing so well, and to take seven points in seven days is amazing, what a return that is from difficult fixtures.

To go away to a place like Everton, when they're riding high, win 2-0 and play them off the park, is fantastic. When you get a result like that it's so hard to back it up, but we did that with a solid point in Burnley, which you'd take all day long before the game as they're so hard to play against. And then we got a gritty 1-0 win against another side in the relegation zone. It's a great turnaround, but I had been feeling that this was coming.

Goodison Park and Turf Moor have always been bogey grounds for Fulham, and I think a lot of people would have written us off ahead of those matches, so for us to get four points away from home in the space of a few days is great form. Then we had Sheffield United, who haven't been playing badly. They've won a fair few games over the last couple of months, even going to Manchester United and turning them over. Clean sheets are what's going to keep us in the Premier League, so it was brilliant to get another one in the bank on Saturday.

The Blades were so defensive that it was difficult to break them down, but the lads remained patient and kept faith that we'd put a chance away when it came, and so it proved. You know what you're going to get when you come up against teams like that, so it's just a case of staying in the game and biding our time, because we know we've got the quality.

Crystal Palace also won their last match but I can't see us going to Selhurst Park on Sunday with anything other than a mindset of trying to win. They struggled to create much against Brighton but, to their credit, stayed in the game and put away the two openings they did manage to have. The stats about how much they struggle without Wilfried Zaha were doing the rounds before the game, so they'll be pleased that they've shown they can win without him. But that said, I reckon right now confidence is as high as it's been all season, so I fancy us at the weekend.

After that, the run of Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City looks awful on paper, but I don't think any of those sides will relish the idea of facing us right now. Anyone can beat anyone in the Premier League this season. We've already shown what we're capable of against those sides. Okay, Man City beat us, but we should've seen off Liverpool, and Spurs was a good example of how we stayed in the game until an opportunity to equalise came our way. With the quality in our side, we've always got someone who can provide a bit of magic for us to score a goal.

Fulham news: Scott Parker interest could be revisited this summer

If Fulham do pull off their great escape and dramatically retain their status as a Premier League club, Scott Parker would surely be a contender for the Manager of the Year award.

Clearly, that's a big 'if' but, with his side now only three points off Newcastle United, safety does look like a realistic target during what remains of the season.

Backed by the owners after sacking Claudio Ranieri just under two years ago, Parker has built quite the reputation as a manager at Craven Cottage it seems.

Indeed, according to Alex Crook on talkSPORT, another club have been keen on making a move for the 40-year-old.

During his debrief on the managerial situation at Bournemouth prior to Jonathan Woodgate's appointment, Crook revealed the Championship side genuinely believed there was a chance they could prise Parker away from the capital.

"When they got rid of Jason Tindall, they believed they could get Scott Parker out of Fulham," he said.

"Now clearly Fulham have gone on a good run, that hasn't happened.

"It could be revisited if Fulham go down, I wouldn't completely rule that out."

GIVEMESPORT's Jonathan Gorrie says...
Surely the only realistic chance Bournemouth have of convincing Parker to join them is if they get promoted and Fulham go down.

Based on current form, that looks unlikely and it's not as if Parker hasn't been backed by his bosses at Craven Cottage during his time in charge.

While there have been some flare-ups in regards to the owners' social media activity, they have still brought in twelve players over the last two transfer windows. Indeed, having proven they're willing to spend in the past, there doesn't seem to a huge reason to leave unless they are relegated again.

Should he keep them up, Fulham can build. If he doesn't, he can leave with his head held high.

Either way, Parker has done his reputation the world of good.

Fulham exclusive: Mark Halsey slates VAR decision

As Fulham close in on what would be a great escape, every decision matters.

While Scott Parker and his team deserve a huge amount of credit for pulling themselves together and cutting the gap between themselves and Newcastle United from ten points to just three, the win over Sheffield United was certainly controversial.

Indeed, speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT in regards to the decision that saw Jayden Bogle denied a penalty after clashing with Alphonse Areola, former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has delivered his verdict.

"Well, once again, the PGMOL have come out with a statement said that it wasn't a clear and obvious error," he said.

"For the life of me, I don't know why. Yes, it looks like the goalkeeper gets the ball but, the Sheffield United player Bogle, gets the ball first and clips it, then the 'keeper clatters into him.

"So I mean, Chris Wilder has got every right to be upset with that situation.

"A few weeks ago, we were saying 'VAR is giving everything' but now, they've gone the other way and they are not giving anything, they have been so inconsistent.

"I've been very vocal saying that VAR should only get involved on clear and obvious issues.

"They are confused, because that was a clear and obvious error - in my opinion - I don't think that was subjective.

"That was obviously a penalty and a yellow card should have been issued to the goalkeeper. He's gone for the ball, it's a genuine challenge so you wouldn't send him off in that situation but Chris Wilder must be scratching his head about getting decisions.

"I just don't understand how the VAR has not seen that as a clear and obvious error."

GIVEMESPORT's Jonathan Gorrie says...
From a Fulham perspective, they are unlikely to care all that much about a potential VAR mistake.

Having seen their side dubiously concede a penalty away at Newcastle in December as a result of the technology as well as denied one at home to Liverpool just a week earlier, perhaps Parker can point to things simply leveling out.

Indeed, his team have significantly improved of late and are perhaps making their own luck at this point in the season after suffering at the hands of the controversial technology.

It's another cruel blow for Sheffield United but, on the balance of things, Fulham did deserve to win the meeting at Craven Cottage, even if football doesn't necessarily work out that way.

As noted by FBRef, they bossed the possession (amassing 63%) and had six shots on target, while UnderStat data suggests they were ahead on xG too (1.21 to 0.98).

Riding a crest of the wave at the moment, perhaps Fulham deserve a slice of luck on the VAR front at long last.

Surprised that we are being allowed to operate with seven loan players in the t but it seems we are within the premier league rules as only two are from english clubs. Would expect this rule to be adjusted in the future.

Well perhaps Mark Halsey could give us his opinion on the perfectly good goal Collins John scored but was disallowed against Arsenal and in the same game Ref gave a penalty decision for Fulham then promptly changed his mind. Ref was a Mark Halsey.

I've viewed this several times and am surprised nobody has commented on the challenged by the Sheffield player. As he goes for the ball his studs are up and his foot goes over the ball just as Areola contacts the ball. Is that not dangerous play and a potential booking for the attacker?
