On-loan Middlesbrough goalkeeper ‘likely to head elsewhere’ this summer

According to Teesside Live, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is unlikely to turn his loan into a permanent deal.

Bettinelli joined Middlesbrough at the start of the campaign from Premier League side Fulham. He was seen as surplus to requirements at Craven Cottage with Paris Saint Germain and France ‘keeper Alphonse Areola joining on loan. Marek Rodak was preferred as back-up in place of Bettinelli.

The England U21 international was allowed to leave on a temporary basis, arriving on loan at Middlesbrough for the season.

He has been the club’s number one choice between the sticks. Dejan Stojanovic provided back up until he joined St Pauli in January, with Jordan Archer arriving on a six-month deal from Motherwell shortly after.

Bettinelli has come under fire on a few occasions from Middlesbrough fans this season. He has conceded 45 goals in 41 games this season and has one of the lowest save percentages in the entire division, with only Marko Marosi of Coventry City, Joe Wildsmith of Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City’s Josef Bursik below him.

Although previous reports stated that there was ‘every chance’ his deal could be made permanent, recent reports suggest otherwise. The article states Bettinelli ‘looks likely to head elsewhere’ this summer. Middlesbrough will therefore need to turn their attention to other goalkeeping targets.

Recent rumours suggest they could make a move for Oxford United ‘keeper Jack Stevens. However, manager Karl Robinson does want to keep the youngster at the Kassam Stadium beyond this season. Alternatively, Middlesbrough could reignite their interest in Portsmouth shotstopper Alex Bass, whose boss Danny Cowley has ‘not been surprised’ by the amount of attention he has received given his quality.

Report: Fulham want to sign 24-year-old Premier League man, two Championship clubs keen

Fulham, Watford and Swansea City are competing to sign Kean Bryan from the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United, as reported by The Sun (11 April, page 67).

Well, they will always have that January night at the aptly named Theatre of Dreams.

There are worse places to score your first top-flight goal. And, as Bryan nodded home the opener in Sheffield United’s coupon-busting 2-1 win at Manchester United, Blades fans could have been forgiven for dreaming of an escape so dramatic and daring even Steve McQueen would struggle to pull it off.

Three months on, however, it’s fair to say that stunning triumph at Old Trafford was little more than a freak result.

Sheffield United have lost nine of 11 games since and, with Bryan out of contract in July, the one-time Manchester City starlet looks set to lead a summer exodus.

The Sun reports Watford, who are cruising towards automatic promotion alongside table-topping Norwich City, want Bryan to strengthen their back line as the Hornets prepare for life back in the top flight.

The 24-year-old is also a target for Swansea and a Fulham side still dreaming of a Houdini-esque escape act of their own, despite Friday’s bitter defeat to Wolves and Newcastle’s subsequent win at Burnley.

Slavisa Jokanovic is mulling over a return to England amid interest from Sheffield United... and Al Gharafa boss is willing to take a Championship job as he looks to repeat the success he achieved with Watford and Fulham

Slavisa Jovanovic has taken Al Gharafa to the AFC Champions League play-offs
However, the Serbian is out of contract this summer and could return to England
A move to Sheffield United is one of the options which could interest Jokanovic
Jokanovic helped Watford and Fulham both get promoted to the Premier League

Slavisa Jokanovic is considering a return to England after finishing the regular Qatar season on a high with Al Gharafa.

The Serbian coach has been linked with Sheffield United but is understood to be weighing up other options as he is out of contract this summer.

Jokanovic saw his Al Gharafa side cap off their Qatar Stars League campaign with a comprehensive 5-1 away success over Umm Salal to climb up from sixth and land a fourth-place finish and a spot in the AFC Champions League qualifying play-offs.

Former Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic is interested in a return to England this summer

The final-day victory saw the Serbian tactician repeat last season's feat of guiding the team to fourth and a place in continental competition.

Since taking up the reins at Al Gharafa in June 2019, Jokanovic has overseen an upturn in the team's fortunes as the side became one of the revelations in the QSL in his maiden season in charge.

Indeed, the Doha-based outfit's stellar performances saw the Serbian nominated in the three-man shortlist for the Coach of the Year award, alongside Xavi Hernandez (Al Sadd) and Uruguayan coach Diego Aguirre (Al-Rayyan), who ultimately scooped the accolade.

In addition to securing this season's top-four finish, Jokanovic steered his men to the QSL Cup semi-finals after running out 4-2 winners over Al Sadd in the last eight.

'It's been a tough season for everyone, not just in Qatar, and we can feel satisfied with how we've ended the season, particularly the way in which the players responded to achieve a comfortable 5-1 win when we really needed the three points to finish the season off in style,' said Jokanovic.

'To repeat what we did last season and finish in the top four and have a chance of making the AFC Champions League is a huge achievement when you consider the problems we've faced throughout the whole season,' declared the 52-year-old.

Jokanovic has been touted for a move to Bramall Lane to succeed Chris Wilder, yet it is understood they are in advanced talks with Alexander Blessin from Oostende,.

Jokanovic, who gained promotion with Watford and Fulham, is hopeful of being offered a role with a top flight club this summer but is open to working in the Championship again also.

Transfer News: Chelsea to offer one of these three players to sign this young PL star

Transfer News: Chelsea to offer one of three players to sign Declan Rice

According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea could offer one of their players in a swap deal to land Declan Rice. It has been said that one of Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Andreas Christensen could be offered to the Hammers to get Rice as Chelsea look to add another midfielder to their ranks.

Rice spent time at Chelsea’s academy before making the switch to West Ham and has made huge strides at the East London outfit. A regular for club and country now, the Englishman is one of the best defensive midfielders on display in the Premier League.

Lampard even confirmed that he was particularly intent on securing the transfer of one player – Declan Rice.

Southampton v Chelsea – Premier League – St Mary s Stadium Chelsea s Timo Werner right arrives with Tammy Abraham centre and Andreas Christensen left ahead of the Premier League match at St Mary s Stadium, Southampton. Picture date: Saturday February 20, 2021.

West Ham have been credited with a recent interest in Abraham due to their dearth of strikers after the departure of Sebastien Haller. The Chelsea striker has hardly been used by Tuchel despite being fit and could see his future elsewhere.

There is also Loftus-Cheek, who is on loan at Fulham. He could be a direct replacement for Rice if the swap is made. Lastly, Chelsea could look to offer Christensen if West Ham cannot turn Craig Dawson’s loan into a permanent deal.

Declan Rice: Chelsea could offer Ruben Loftus-Cheek to West Ham in swap deal

David Moyes must put his foot down and reject a rumoured swap deal involving West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

What’s the word?

According to the Express, Loftus-Cheek is one of three players the Stamford Bridge outfit may look to present in exchange for Rice’s signature this summer.

Chelsea failed to sign Rice last year when West Ham held firm at an £80m valuation, and the Irons are thought to have since increased their asking price to £100m.

Frank Lampard’s sacking was expected to bring a halt to the Blues’ interest in taking Rice back to south west London, yet Thomas Tuchel has not scrubbed his predecessors’ plans.

But the German is prioritising the arrival of a new striker and has Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku under consideration, which would leave the Blues clutching at straws to fund a pursuit of Rice.

As such, Chelsea are tipped to potentially offer West Ham their choice of Loftus-Cheek, Andreas Christiansen or Tammy Abraham in hopes of bringing down the Hammers’ asking price.

The London Stadium natives have been linked with a potential move for Abraham recently, while £60,000-per-week Loftus-Cheek is considered to be a direct replacement for Rice.

Should West Ham accept Loftus-Cheek for Rice?

Rice’s services are bound to be highly sought-after among the Premier League’s established elite clubs this summer, after once again proving to be a key part of West Ham’s plans and further establishing himself on the international stage.

The 22-year-old was named as the Man of the Match during England’s recent World Cup qualifying wins over Albania and Poland, despite playing the closing stages of the latter tie with a lateral knee ligament injury.

Rice’s issue meant he missed West Ham’s wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City last week, the first Premier League games that the Irons’ vice-captain had sat out since May 2019 after 68 straight starts.

He already has interest from Manchester United as well, who could use Jesse Lingard to negotiate a lower fee, but reports by The Sun claim West Ham have no interest in selling one star to retain the one they have on loan.

Rival interest will also ensure the Hammers are not in a position where they must accept a downgrade to sell Rice to Chelsea – a player Moyes claims suitors would need “the Bank of England and the Royal Bank of Scotland” to sign.

Loftus-Cheek would certainly be a step down in quality for the Irons, and send out the wrong message to the rest of the squad and potential summer targets over their aspirations of sustaining this season’s remarkable challenge for European football.

The Chelsea man – who Gary Neville claims is “a massive talent” – has struggled to impress consistently this season while on loan with relegation-threatened Fulham, having offered just a single goal and no assists in 26 Premier League games for the Cottagers.

His defensive contributions pale into insignificance beside Rice’s, too, with Loftus-Cheek trailing for tackles (1.9 to 0.9), interceptions (2 to 0.2), fouls committed (0.7 to 1.1) and clearances (1.2 to 0.5) per game in the top-flight this term, per WhoScored.

If Rice is to leave West Ham at the end of the season, they need to be earning top-dollar to sign a ready-made replacement – not accepting discounted approaches for players that will stagnate their progress as a club.

Report: French club ready to sell rumoured Spurs target for £25m

The Daily Mail have claimed that Lyon are ready to sell Joachim Andersen in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur showing interest in the central defender.

Andersen, who is on currently on loan at Fulham, has been impressive since recovering from his ankle ligament injury and his return to the side has seen an upturn in Fulham’s form under Scott Parker.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold previously revealed that the Dane is one of the options Spurs are considering as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his options at centre-back.

The Telegraph reported last week that Lyon have already received a ‘serious enquiry’ from an unnamed English club for the 24-year-old.

The Daily Mail has now alleged that Andersen has already informed Lyon of his intention to make a permanent move to the Premier League in the summer.

The report the Ligue 1 club are open to letting the centre-back leave and would accept a fee of around £25m for him.

Spurs Web Opinion

£25m seems like a relative bargain for a player with Andersen’s potential. While the signing would entail some risk since he is unproven at a top club, I would take Andersen any day of the week to his compatriot Vestergaard.

Brighton's stalemate with Everton has West Brom and Fulham needing snookers
Ian Hart gives his take on a lacklustre draw at the Amex Stadium as Brighton edge closer to safety while Everton maintain hopes of European football

With the lucrative Premier League prize money dependent on final league positions, it almost begs the question will the time honoured ‘traditional end of season fare’ actually become obsolete as clubs will scrap for every point until the final whistle of the 38th league game?

Initially judging by the content of the first hour of this game, clearly not. As this game, despite Brighton not yet being mathematically safe and Everton still very much battling for a shot at European football in the post Covid world, had all the hallmarks of two teams already on the beaches of the various holiday destinations for the discerning EPL footballer.

Arguably it did get better in the last half hour, but not for the first time this season Albion’s poor finishing in front of goal stopped them achieving back to back home victories for the first time since November 2019.

The formerly under achieving Leandro Trossard, but now enjoying a halcyon second half of the season both domestically and for Belgium, almost broke the deadlock on 81 but his sweetly hit free kick was pushed round the post by Everton keeper Robin Olsen.

At the other end sub Alex Iwobi, shot inches over the bar on 90 minutes denying Everton the biggest robbery since Bruce Reynolds and co stopped the train.

In the end it was honours even, taking into account events elsewhere and on this showing, both Fulham or West Brom will require snookers to catch Brighton and Everton will probably enjoy more success in Europe next season if they turn their efforts to songwriting.

Perhaps a ballad “Nearly but not quite” based on this 90 minutes might be the answer?

Love the stats at the end of this article, do Chelsea really think that West Ham would really want RLC in any capacity as it is obvious they don't. That along with the money he is on I am not sure anybody would sign him so it will be interesting too see what happens to him after the season ends, my take is that he will return to Chelsea and see out his contract on the bench.
