Scott Parker: 'Fulham want to be an attack-minded team'

Scott Parker has revealed he wanted Fulham to be an attack-minded team this season despite their struggles in front of goal contributing to their relegation.

"But we want to be on the front foot and be an attack-minded team, there is that element as well.

"I would also say that even with our attack-minded play we were creating a lot of chances. We were getting the ball in the right areas but fell short at certain moments in terms of being clinical.

https://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/fulham/news/scott-parker-fulham-want-to-be-an-attack-minded-team_447535.html?newsnow

Is Parker having a laugh? Attack minded and lots of chances created? Really?

We did create a lot of chances in  almost every game, even v Burnley we probably had more shots on goal than them, hitting the frame of the goal at one  point, while their keeper made some good saves.
We also had a good pen shout  on Cav not even  reviewed.

But like Chelsea the previous week, Burnley were a lot more clinical in front of goal, hitting us on the break when we were going for  the win, also like Chelsea.

We created a lot of chances in most games, but  didn't have any clinical, or composed enough finishers, with Mitro our only experienced goalscorer.

Asotosyios

Come on Ray, you know that's not true. We don't create a lot of chances - mostly half chances.

Apart from Anguissa hitting the post, which other big chance can you recall against Burnley? Even against Chelsea, our chances were a couple of shots outside the area.

Fulham boss Scott Parker told to make big decision amid verdict over Tottenham job links

A whole host of names are being linked with taking over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Fulham boss Scott Parker among the favourites for the Spurs vacancy

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson doesn't believe Tottenham Hotspur's supporters would be happy if chairman Daniel Levy turned to Fulham boss Scott Parker to be the club's new head coach.

Levy has been on the hunt for a new boss ahead of the start of next season for almost a month now after opting to sack Jose Mourinho following a run of indifferent results.

Since axing the Portuguese chief, who has since been appointed as Italian giants Roma's new boss, Spurs have been linked with an array of candidates to take over in north London, including Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

As well as those two being linked with the post, another British manager, currently managing in the Premier League, who has been heavily linked with the job is Fulham manager Scott Parker, who, of course, played for Spurs during his playing career.

Despite earning plaudits for trying to introduce a pleasing-on-the-eye style at Craven Cottage this season, Merson is not convinced Spurs' supporters would welcome the decision if Levy turned to Parker, as well as urging him to stay in west London.

Merson wrote in his Daily Star column: "Scott Parker sounds like he has a big decision to make. But he should stay at Fulham.

"He's a young manager who's still learning. Do you leave Fulham and spend months out of the game, only to get offered a firefighting job by a struggling team?

"I'm not sure he'd walk into a new job if he quit. The Crystal Palace job might be available, but would Tottenham fans be happy with Scott Parker? I doubt it.

"He could be out of work for a while if he leaves. Look at Frank Lampard. He hasn't got back in yet has he?

"I like Scott. But I was disappointed Fulham got themselves in a position to get out of trouble and then went negative again and went down."

Fulham's immediate return to the Championship was confirmed on Monday evening following a 2-0 home defeat to Burnley.

Following the game, Parker issued an update on his future, amid the ongoing reports linking him with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, insisting that he was focused on trying to get Fulham ready for a promotion tilt next season in a bid to get them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

"I've been committed since I came here, that's always been the case," he told Sky Sports after Fulham's relegation was confirmed.

"What is key is us, not in the coming days because there's three games left of the season, but what's key for me and vitally important for me is that we sit down, analyse and we learn and we're brave enough to put our hands up.

"Don't go through the same cycle, at the moment we're going through the same cycle. We need to break that cycle and work out what we need to do as a football club to move forward.

"I'll be the first to put my point across, along with all the others to get this club back in the league and stay there.

"That's my main aim, I don't want to come into this league for a season and then be relegated, I want to come into this league and stay in this league and move this club forward."

At the time of writing, Parker is the second favourite with the bookmakers to succeed Mourinho in north London, with Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi the continued favourite.

SCOTT STAYING Fulham will NOT sack Scott Parker after Premier League relegation despite friction with club chiefs

FULHAM will not sack Scott Parker despite  friction between the manager and the club's ruling Khan family.

Owner Shahid Khan and his son Tony, the club's controversial director of football, are fuming with their 40-year-old manager after a late-season capitulation saw them relegated with three games to go.

But former player Parker is under contract for two more years.

And he will not be offered a pay-off.

Fulham have taken just one point from seven games — including Monday's 2-0 home defeat by Burnley — which confirmed the yo-yo club would swap divisions for a fourth consecutive season.

Parker has voiced concerns at the lack of communication with Tony Khan, who also works for his father's NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars and in American wrestling.

But it is understood Khan has no intention of stepping aside from his Fulham duties and believes that the club has backed Parker.

So Parker must thrash out his differences with the Khans or quit his job.

The Fulham gaffer has needed to rely largely on loan signings this season, after the west London club busted the bank on their previous failed attempt to stay in the top flight in 2018-19.

The Khans argue that most of the loanees have impressed.

Only Chelsea man Ruben Loftus-Cheek — a signing recommended by Parker — flopped during Fulham's latest relegation campaign.

Ex-Tottenham midfielder Parker has been linked with the vacant Spurs job.

But it is thought that the manner of Fulham's relegation would make him too hard a sell to take over from the axed  Jose Mourinho at White Hart Lane.

Is Tottenham chasing the wrong Fulham defender, in Andersen?

In news that we know is not breaking like Sky Sports reports. Tottenham Hotspur is apparently again chasing after and even has made progress signing Fulham defender Joachim Andersen. However, if Tottenham were really forward-thinking in the recruitment department, it would be Andersen's teammate Tosin Adarabioyo they would be scouting instead.

Tottenham Defense needs to get better
There are a number of areas to address in the Tottenham defensive middle, from getting younger, more athletic, to getting better passers, and frankly just better defenders. HotspurHQ covered a number of left-sided center-halves earlier in the season but Tottenham seems intent on signing another right-footed player if the Joachim Andersen to Tottenham rumors is to be believed.

However, for a number of reasons, we at HotspurHQ see Joachim Andersen as just more of the same as what we have, which is not enough on several levels. If Tottenham is serious about both getting better and getting younger, then it is not Andersen but his center-back partner, Tosin Adarabioyo they should be targeting as the team's next right-center-half.

Fulham defense is not terrible
Adarabioyo and Andersen have formed the core of the Fulham defense this season and both are young with potentially bright futures in the Premier League. Before everyone goes crazy over Fulham being relegated, it was far more because of the offense than the defense.

Fulham has given up fewer goals than Leeds and only two more than West Ham at 47 against on the season. With the second worse offense in the league at only 25 goals for, the defense has not had much of a chance to shine.

And while neither Andersen nor Adaradioyo is a perfect target, both have promise. That said, here are three reasons, Tottenham should be targeting Adaradioyo instead of Andersen.

Tosin Adaradioyo is better on the ball
Tottenham clearly wants to build out of the back and to do that you need good passing center-halves. Tosin Adaradioyo is a better passer than is Joachim Andersen. While Andersen has attempted and completed slightly more passes on the season than has Adaradioyo, Tosin is more accurate.

Tosin Adaradioyo has completed more than 1600 passes this season at a rate of 86.8%, which is higher than Andersen (83.4%) and Toby Alderweireld (83%), according to fbref.com. Tosin's passing is especially more effective on longer passes.

Tosin has the kind of passing Tottenham needs
On medium passes – 15-30 yards – Adaradioyo completed 94.1%, which is better than both Alderweireld (92.2) and Andersen (91.5). The better performance was even more apparent on long balls over 30 yards. Toby Alderweireld has completed 65.6% of 369 attempts, Andersen completed 69% of 568 attempts, and Tosin has completed 73% of 426 attempts.

While Adaradioyo is not attempting as many downfield balls as Andersen he is offering more than Toby and at a much higher rate of success than either of the other players.

Given the kind of team, Tottenham wants to build having defenders who are strong passers is a must, and Tosin fits that bill. Additionally, Adaradioyo might be a better defender than Andersen too.

Tosin, Solid defensive performer
Yes, we need defenders that can pass but ultimately Tottenham also needs defenders that can defend. Tosin Adaradioyo can definitely do that and in some ways better than Joachin Andersen. Simply from a team perspective, Fulham had a positive net expected goals of 0.14 when Tosin was on the field and a negative net expected goals of 0.95 when Andersen was on the field.

Of course, these two played together a ton but when it was Adaradioyo and not Andersen on the pitch, Fulham was better. Team defense is not the reason Tottenham should consider Tosin, however, it is how he defends.

While not quite as effective in the air, winning approximately 70% versus 76%, Tosin is actually a bigger defender than Joachin Anderson. At a year younger – 23, compared to Andersen's 24 – and in only his first year versus the competition at the top flight level, one has to think Adaradioyo will improve in this area as well.

Adaradioyo is aggressive but does not foul like Tottenham
Despite playing more than 100 minutes less on the season, Adaradioyo has as many tackles and more interceptions than Andersen and only 8 fewer clearances. More importantly, Tosin does not foul at nearly the rate Joachim does. On the season Andersen has committed 41 fouls compared to just 13 from Tosin Adarabioyo.

Knowing how Tottenham defends that ability to avoid fouling defensively is a skill Spurs desperately need. On a per 90 basis Andersen commits 1.33 fouls, Toby Alderweireld is nearly half that total at just .73 fouls. Tosin Adarabioyo is even better at just .44 fouls per 90 minutes.

So if not Tosin Adarabioyo, please just someone who does NOT commit even more fouls than the current Tottenham defense.

Cheaper and British, just what Tottenham needs
Maybe the best reason to look very seriously at Tosin Adarabioyo, if anyone in the Fulham defense, is that he fits the mold of what Tottenham is really looking for. Joachim Andersen is on loan at Fulham and is under contract with Lyon until 2024. Adarabioyo is under contract with Fulham – who may need the money – and that contract expires in 2023, a full season earlier.

Currently, Transfermarkt.com shows Andersen as being valued at around $16.5 million (£11.7 million). Certainly, it is an affordable transfer although Sky Sports was talking about Lyon wanting around £20 million on the deal.

Adaradioyo is even more affordable, however. Currently valued at $11 million (£7.8 million) and being part of Fulham potentially makes Tosin more obtainable at a reasonable fee.

In fact, Fulham only signed Adaradioyo last season for just $3 million from the Manchester City Academy, meaning even at less than £10 million on the deal it would be a significant profit for Fulham.

Finally, it is that Manchester City Academy experience that adds the final strawberry on top. Adaradioyo is British having played for England up until the U19 level. The fact that Tottenham could add a young, homegrown player to their team, opening up precious space for other foreign players makes this just too logical of a situation not to further investigate.

Ultimately, we have no idea which direction Tottenham will go in the transfer market as neither do they without a Director of Football or a permanent manager. Until then, we can do what we hope Tottenham is doing and scout around, we just need to dig a bit deeper than Sky Sports.

Match Preview: United v Fulham

Manchester United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on Tuesday evening as we move towards the end of the Premier League season.

The clash with the Cottagers will be our final home match of the season and an emotional occasion. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on supporters attending matches, fans will be allowed back inside the Theatre of Dreams for our penultimate league fixture of the campaign.

Some 10,000 Reds will be able to watch their favourite team live for the first time since our 2-0 win over Manchester City back in March 2020 and we simply cannot wait to have you back.

Without further ado, here is everything you need to know about this special game...

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE MATCH?

The encounter kicks off at 18:00 BST and will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports. Alternatively, you can follow the action via our MUTV coverage, starting at 16:55 BST with the Match Day Live programme, providing you with a preview, match commentary and post-match analysis, interviews and reaction. You can also keep on top of the action in our Official App and on ManUtd.com.

FORM GUIDE

The Reds are looking to bounce back after two straight consecutive defeats in the Premier League. The disappointing results were our first league setbacks since our loss to Sheffield United in January. A win against Fulham will cement second place in the league for United.

The Cottagers have also lost two matches on the bounce in May. First, they lost the west London derby against Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge before their relegation to the Championship was confirmed with a 2-0 loss to Sean Dyche's Burnley at Craven Cottage.

HEAD TO HEAD

This will be the 86th encounter between the clubs and United hold a strong record against the team located by the Thames. In our previous 85 matches, the Reds have won 52 of them, with 19 encounters ending all square and 14 in defeat. In the reverse fixture at Craven Cottage back in January, a poacher's goal from Edinson Cavani and a screamer from Paul Pogba made sure we triumphed 2-1 in London.

TEAM NEWS

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that our captain, Harry Maguire, will remain unavailable for the remainder of the Premier League campaign following the ankle-ligament injury he suffered on our trip to Aston Villa. Anthony Martial is continuing his work back to full fitness but is still doubtful to return for this fixture. Phil Jones remains unavailable.

For the visitors, captain Tom Cairney remains unavailable with a knee injury which he suffered in December. Defenders Alfie Mawson and Terence Kongolo will not feature against the Reds as they are recovering from long-term injuries. Kevin McDonald will also miss out, having suffered from kidney problems since the beginning of March.

ONES TO WATCH

Former Sunderland striker Josh Maja has scored three times in 13 Premier League appearances since he joined on loan from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux in the January transfer window and is a man to look out for. At the other end of the pitch, Danish defender Joachim Andersen has been one of the Cottagers' stand-out players in a difficult campaign alongside French goalkeeper and World Cup-winner Alphonse Areola.

THE MANAGER

This is Scott Parker's second full season as Fulham manager after he took over as interim boss in February 2019 following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. The former England International guided the Cottagers to Premier League promotion in the 2019/20 season but, this term, it's been a different story for the capital outfit. As a player, he represented Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Newcastle Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Fulham in the Premier League and he was also named the FWA Footballer of the Year for the 2010/11 season following a stellar campaign with the Hammers.

Fulham aim to avoid defeat after relegation once again

Team news

Latest MW36 team news

Did you know?

Southampton have lost only three of their last 43 Premier League home matches against sides starting the day in the bottom three (W29 D11), winning each of their last three.

Saints have kept a clean sheet in six of their last seven meetings with Fulham in all competitions.

Fulham are aiming to avoid defeat in their first match after being relegated for the third time in a row, having drawn 2-2 with Crystal Palace in 2013/14 and beaten Everton 2-0 in 2018/19.

The Cottagers have scored first in nine PL away matches this season, their most ever in a campaign in the competition. But they have gone on to win just 33 per cent of those matches (W3 D5 L1).

Ralph Hasenhuttl confirms Southampton injury fears for Jan Bednarek ahead of Fulham clash

Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Jan Bednarek is Southampton's only non-long-term injury concern ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Fulham at St. Mary's.

Scott Parker's Cottagers visit the south coast looking for a positive response this weekend, after their relegation to the Championship was sealed with a 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley on Monday night (BBC).

Southampton were also in midweek action at home to Crystal Palace and beat the London outfit 3-1 to snap a four-game winless run, but lost Bednarek at the start of the second half after he took a knock on his heel.

Bednarek has been a fixture of the Saints' backline this term starting all 35 of their Premier League fixtures, as well as all FA and Carabao Cup ties, but had been unable to train in the days following the Eagles affair.

Hasenhuttl was unable to share while speaking to the media on Thursday whether or not Bednarek has recovered from the ankle injury in time to face Fulham, when he will still be without long-term absentees Ryan Bertrand (calf) and Oriol Romeu (ankle).

"Bertrand and Ori are still out – long-term injuries also – but I think that is it," Hasenhuttl said, via quotes by the Saints' club website. "Bednarek has a little problem with his ankle. Last game, he got a hit on his heel [and] he hasn't trained since the last game."

TBR's view:

Hasenhuttl potentially being without Bednarek for the first time this season will come as a blow for the Southampton boss ahead of hosting Fulham on Saturday, having lauded the Poland international for the consistency to his performances.

"He is robust. He is one of the best defensive fighters, I say always he's a firefighter who really does everything to protect his own goal," the Saints boss told the Daily Echo in March.

But losing Bednarek for the visit of Fulham will come as less of a blow as it would in previous games, with Parker's side only scoring once in their last four Premier League matches and showing little spirit or fight after falling two goals behind at home to Burnley on Monday.

Having relegation confirmed could take some of the pressure off the Fulham players' shoulders and allow them to display their abilities more freely, but Southampton should still have enough in their ranks to limit what threat the Cottagers could pose.

Report: Club make decision on under-contract manager after Tottenham Hotspur claims

Reported Tottenham Hotspur managerial candidate Scott Parker will not be sacked, according to The Sun.

The Daily Mail reported last month that Fulham boss Parker is one of the managers Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly looking at.

Tottenham are on the hunt for a new permanent manager to replace Jose Mourinho, who was sacked last month and was replaced by Ryan Mason until the end of the season.

The Sun has claimed that despite friction between Parker and the Fulham's owners, the London club will not sack the 40-year-old.

The report has claimed that Parker is not happy with Tony Khan's lack of communication, and if he does not want to work with him, then he will have to quit.

This is an interesting twist, and one that will affect Tottenham chairman Levy.

Fulham reportedly not willing to sack Parker means that they do not want to give him a pay-off.

This means that if Spurs want to hire Parker, then it is likely that they will have to pay a compensation fee to Fulham.

That will only increase the cost for Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who will surely not want to pay a compensation fee to bring in a new manager.

Many will question whether Parker is suitable for the Spurs managerial role.

After all, the Fulham boss is only 40 and he could not keep the Cottagers in the Premier League.

You know, I read these faithfully but continually see Parker has earned plaudits for the way the team plays, an attack minded coach, have I lost my marbles, I have only seen two seasons of dull turgid football, named as parkerball by those that have watched every game.
Then to top it all I read Southampton are preparing a £20 mill bid for rlc, I am beginning to wonder if maybe I am on a different planet to these reporters.
Watching the ups and downs since 1958, wouldn't have it any other way, what a roller coaster of a club.

Report: Southampton target loan swoop for Chelsea-owned midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek is reportedly on the loan radar of Premier League rivals Southampton for next year.

Loftus-Cheek, 25, has spent this season out on loan with London neighbours Fulham. Unfortunately, the attacking midfielder has flopped during his loan spell, contributing one goal and zero assists in 30 appearances for a Fulham side that have been relegated from the Premier League.

According to the Express, Southampton have prepared to give him another shot though next campaign in the top flight.

It is explained that the Saints are planning a season-long loan bid this summer, with a view to making it permanent if it works out.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is an admirer of the Chelsea academy graduate, and previously tried to sign him.

The report adds Loftus-Cheek is valued around £20million, with three years still remaining on his £120,000-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge.

The Chronicle View

Loftus-Cheek remains a massive favourite with plenty of Chelsea fans.

The 10-time caped England international was an important figure in the Blues side back under ex-manager Maurizio Sarri, but a long-term injury derailed his progress.

It's been extremely frustrating to see someone with his ability struggle to make a big difference with Fulham, but it would be foolish to completely write him off.

A loan with Southampton in the 2021/22 season makes sense for all parties, and Chelsea supporters would love nothing more than to see the talented playmaker back to his very best.

The Tosin comments remind me of John Lacy's move to the Lane.

QPR transfer update details interest in EFL midfielder, move won't be straightforward

Queens Park Rangers are keen to re-sign Stefan Johansen this summer, according to reports from West London Sport.

The Hoops completed a deal to bring the midfielder to Loftus Road on loan from Fulham during the January transfer window, a move which certainly reaped its rewards in the second half of the season.

Since moving to the club the 30-year-old has been really impressive after making 21 appearances for Mark Warburton's side.

West London Sport claim that QPR are keen to make a move for the Norwegian midfielder, but know that a deal could be hard to do.

Fulham have just been relegated from the Premier League and with a year remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage it remains to be seen what role Johansen could play under Scott Parker next term.

Any move that QPR make will be 'less straightforward and will be much more protracted', according to the report.

It's claimed that Johansen is keen to stay in London, but it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will be lining up for the Hoops or the Cottagers on the opening day of the new season.

The verdict

This would be a fantastic signing if QPR could pull it off.

Stefan Johansen is a class act at Championship level and that was certainly proven during the second half of the campaign with some quality performances being put in.

Fulham may want to keep the player next term, but if opportunities are going to be limited then Mark Warburton may fancy his chances of bringing him back to Loftus Road.

The midfielder could be a key player for the Hoops next term and so it'll be very interesting to see how this one plays out.

I can't think of one reason as to why SJ would want to come back to us.

Tottenham transfer news: Spurs receive boost to hopes of signing Joachim Andersen

The defender, currently on loan at Fulham from Lyon, wants to remain in the Premier League next season

Tottenham's hopes of signing Joachim Andersen appear to have been boosted, with the Fulham loanee reportedly keen to stay in the Premier League next season.

The centre-back has spent 2020/21 on loan at Fulham from Lyon. With Fulham having had their relegation confirmed with Monday night's defeat to Burnley, though, Andersen will have to find a new club if he's to continue his impressive start to life in England's top flight.

Spurs are said to be among a number of clubs interested and, according to the Evening Standard, Andersen is settled in London and has his sights set on joining a club playing European football.

With three games to go, Champions League qualification is almost impossible for Spurs – currently under the interim charge of Ryan Mason – but they could yet make it into the Europa League.

Tottenham are believed to be targeting upgrades in the centre of defence this summer and are understood to have held an interest in Andersen for some time.

The 24-year-old Denmark international has made 29 Premier League appearances for Fulham, scoring once and also captaining Scott Parker's side on occasion.

He began his senior career with FC Twente in the Netherlands, before moving on to Sampdoria in 2017 then Lyon two years later.

Not sure about the good chances, most of our shots across a number of games were weak prods which the goalkeeper may have dropped to the floor to gather but only to waste a few seconds. Apart from Frank's attempt hitting the bar I am struggling to recall Burnley keeper having to make a save of note.
