EXCLUSIVE: Fulham ward off Sheff Utd as big fee is set for Cairney deal

Fulham won't make a decision on their playing staff – including the in-demand Tom Cairney – until they have made a final decision on manager Scott Parker's future, TEAMtalk can reveal.

Parker's future at Craven Cottage remains shrouded in doubt. Indeed, Fulham's hierarchy are far from impressed with stories emerging from his camp that he felt let down by their transfer business. The Cottagers eventually lost their battle to avoid the drop and will start 2021/22 back in the Championship.

It is far from certain whether Parker will lead their campaign back in the second tier.

As a result, former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic will have to wait to see if he can land his top target Cairney.

We can confirm that Cairney is on Jokanovic's wanted list at Sheffield United. Cairney was the lynchpin in Jokanvoic's hugely impressive Fulham side which he guided to promotion in 2019.

Cairney suffered an injury-ravaged campaign in the Premier League which limited him to just 10 games. Indeed, he is yet to kick a competitive ball in 2021; his last outing being a 1-1 draw with Newcastle on December 19.

Cairney won't come cheap as he has three years left on his current contract. Indeed, the Blades are likely to be hit with a near £10m asking price for the midfielder. Nonetheless, Jokanovic is determined to test Fulham's resolve.

Jokanovic honoured to take Sheffield United job

Jokanovic, meanwhile, is very much looking forward to the prospect of returning to English football.

"I'm honoured to become the manager of this historic football club and I'm grateful to Prince Abdullah bin Mosa'ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Yusuf Giansiracusa and Stephen Bettis for trusting in me to start this new chapter for the Blades," Jokanovic told the club's website.

"We all share the same long-term vision, passion and ambition for Sheffield United.

"I'm excited to work in English football again. I'm looking forward to getting started with the players and staff. I can't wait to meet our passionate, loyal supporters as we prepare for the challenge in the Championship.

"I want to assure our amazing fans that we're fully committed to helping the team achieve its goals. We want to make you feel proud. With your support, we can make Bramall Lane a fortress. I have no doubt that your voice will make a big difference to the team after so long without you last season.

"Let's work together to get Sheffield United back to where the club belongs."

Fulham slap '£10m price tag on Cairney'

Fulham have put a £10m price tag on captain Tom Cairney as the club seek to deter interest in their creative midfielder from former boss Slavisa Jokanovic, according to a report from Teamtalk this morning.

Jokanovic, who was appointed as the permanent successor to Chris Wilder at Sheffield United last week, has reportedly made the Scottish international his top target as he bids to lead the Blades to an immediate top flight return. Cairney captained Jokanovic's Fulham side to play-off final success over Aston Villa in 2018 and was a pivotal part of the team that fell short at the semi-final stage the previous season. The midfielder has previously said that the best football of his career came in that spell under Jokanovic.

The Scottish international still has a further three years to run on his current contract at Craven Cottage. Cairney is understood to be happy in London and would be unlikely to leave Fulham, although Jokanovic is apparently eager to explore the possibility of luring the 30 year-old playmaker to Yorkshire. Whether Sheffield United would be willing to part with such a significant sum for a player who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons in order to strike a deal remains to be seen.

Cairney, who made just ten league appearances this season having aggravated a knee problem picked up in pre-season, has scored 37 goals in 212 appearances since joining Fulham for around £3.5m in July 2015.

Scott Parker's Fulham future discussed as report details doubt over future at Craven Cottage

Scott Parker's position as Fulham boss 'is shrouded in doubt', according to reports from Teamtalk.

The Whites are preparing for a massive summer after suffering relegation from the Premier League following a disappointing campaign in the top flight.

Parker was in charge when the West London side suffered relegation two years ago, before helping them to secure promotion again last term.

The hope was that he would be able to help Fulham to consolidate their place in the top flight this season, but unfortunately a lack of consistency stopped them from keeping their heads above water.

Fulham conducted plenty of transfer business while in the top flight, but according to the report from Teamtalk, the club's hierarchy 'are far from impressed with stories emerging from his camp that he felt let down by their transfer business'.

What this means ahead of the new season remains to be seen.

Scott Parker will be seen by many as the ideal candidate to continue what he's started and help Fulham to secure promotion once again, but whether he'll be given the opportunity to do that this term will be hotly debated.

But with the summer transfer window close to reopening, supporters will simply be hoping that a decision is made as quickly as possible to allow them the best chance to prepare.

The verdict

If this report is true, Fulham need to move quickly to make a decision.

The Cottagers are facing a crucial summer in the transfer market and so it's essential that they are fully focused on what's ahead.

Scott Parker will be a great choice to take the club forward next term, but if there are doubts behind the scenes then the hierarchy need to address them promptly.

If they don't, it could have a huge impact on Fulham's ability to get off to a good start in the second tier.

Sheffield United's Slavisa Jokanovic transformation: Goals and a new-look transfer policy

The Serbian will officially start work on July 1 when he leaves his post at Al Gharafa but what will the Blades look like under the 52-year-old and how will he operate?

Sheffield United's new era under Slavisa Jokanovic will officially start on July 1 when he leaves his post in Qatar.

His appointment has understandably lifted the gloom around Bramall Lane following a season of struggle and the loss of fans favourite Chris Wilder as manager.

However, supporters now have plenty to look forward to once again following his arrival, but what can we expect from the two-time promotion winner?

On the pitch, Sheffield United will be a hard-working, fast attacking team with chances and goals aplenty.

During the 2014-15 season with Watford, the Hornets finished the campaign with 91 goals, and in his two full seasons in charge at Craven Cottage, Fulham found the net 85 times and 79 times respectively as he first guided them to safety and then to two top six finishes.

His sides regularly top the tables when it comes to shooting stats and you would imagine fans will certainly get their money's worth from an entertainment point of view.

His footballing influence comes from his early days growing up in Yugoslavia and as a player with Partizan Belgrade, who played front-foot football.

"They wanted to put the ball on the floor and try to dominate the game and win the game with the ball. This is our tradition.

"This generation was under-20 world champions in Chile. I was runner-up with the under-21s. I have a silver medal for that competition. It was a very competitive generation and the mentality was all about one result – if we don't win we are not happy."

Jokanovic likes his full-backs to have pace and to attack and likes to commit bodies forward.

It's not all about flair though, emphasis on winning the ball back quickly and working hard out of possession is equally important, as former Blade Kevin McDonald, who played under him at Fulham, will testify.

"At training, everything is about winning the ball back. Press after loss, press after loss, all the time," he said.

"We know we have to earn the right to play and the manager drills it in us every day. We will try and win the ball back as soon as we lose it and then keep the ball, make them run around and try and create chances, tire them out."

Oliver Norwood, who has been such an important player for United in recent seasons, is set for a prominent role again having played a part in Fulham's promotion in 2018 at the base of their midfield three.

After accepting the offer of a three-year contract, Jokanovic was quick to highlight Norwood's importance.

"Oli I know personally," he said. "He is a great man, a perfect professional he has quality and I am sure he will be an important player for us and the team."

He has a number of formations under his belt. His preferred choice is 4-3-3, but he has also played with three at the back and at Watford flicked between 3-5-2 and 4-3-1-2.

Being flexible with formations is key for him and he is not afraid to admit defeat early in to a match. There were times at Watford when he would make subs in the first half and change approach if it wasn't working.

There is no blank cheque book and as a self-sustaining football club, there will not be an opportunity to overhaul this squad straight away. It was made clear in the interview process he is inheriting a group of players shaped around 3-5-2.

He will work with what he has got, topped up with the help of a few additions in the transfer window, meaning he will look at how best to operate with the tools at his disposal.

Recruitment in this summer will be shaped around improving the midfield department to increase pace, power and creativity going forward.

Over time and once he has had the benefit of a few transfer windows, he could well evolve the squad into one that reflects his signature in terms of shape and personnel.

Off the pitch, two factors that really impressed Stephen Bettis and Jan Van Winckel in his opening interview was his experience of working in global dressing rooms.

In a playing and coaching career that has taken in seven countries, United's new recruitment policy fits well with that.

Under Chris Wilder, transfers were handled by the manager and the recruitment team, with targets identified within Wilder's inner circle and left to the board to do the rest.

There will not be such a hands-on feel this time and, instead, it will be more of a club-owned policy.

The recruitment team will still identify targets, Van Winckel, a key figure not just at United but within United World, will also help identify players from abroad using his extensive contacts and there will be more voices involved in a wider recruitment model.

Jokanovic will still have the final say but targets far and wide will be identified, given the thumbs up or down by the recruitment team and then put to the manager.

This is not something we will see initially, with this summer's recruitment set to be minimal, but if United do return to the Premier League during his three-year tenure, expect this model to kick in then.

But more importantly for the board, given the emergence of some of the club's promising youngsters, in particular Daniel Jebbison and Femi Seriki, Jokanovic also expressed a willingness to want to promote from within and build a pathway from the academy.

He has a history of believing 'if they are good enough, they are old enough'.

During his time at Fulham, he handed Ryan Sessegnon, now at Spurs, his debut aged 16 after bringing him into the first team squad for training at 15.

He also handed Harvey Elliott, now at Liverpool, his first team bow aged just 15.

There will be opportunities for those currently under the stewardship of Paul Heckingbottom and Derek Geary at Shirecliffe to get their chance.

With attacking football, pace, power and 'aggressivity' on the agenda there is a lot to get excited about next season.

While known for having a strong personality, Jokanovic is not a stand-offish manager and is known to have a beer with his players and be big on team spirit.

If United can get off to a good start, with fans back inside the stadium and a more positive air around Bramall Lane, there could be no stopping this side if he can help it find its mojo again.

Joachim Andersen claims Spurs man is best in his position in Premier League

Reported Tottenham target, Joachim Andersen, has claimed that Harry Kane is the best striker in the Premier League when talking to the FPL Show.

Andersen impressed this season while on loan at Fulham with his no-nonsense defending, quality on the ball and eye for a long pass, even though the Cottagers were eventually relegated from the Premier League.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have struggled in the centre of defence of late, with Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld all enduring sub-par campaigns.

Journalist Jack Pitt Brooke claimed earlier this month that Andersen has picked Tottenham Hotspur as the club he wants to join in this summer's transfer window.

Lyon are reportedly open to selling the Danish centre-back this summer and he has been mentioned as a £25m target for the North London club this year (Telegraph).

The central defender will now be looking ahead to the European Championships, where he will join forces with current Spurs star, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and former player, Christian Eriksen.

The FPL Show asked players who the best striker in the Premier League was and Matt Phillips from West Brom said: "Harry Kane, it's just another season where he's hit great numbers. Obviously, he leads Tottenham and he's probably the best striker in the world."

Andersen agreed with this statement, saying: "Yeah, for me, that's Harry Kane."

How Southampton's defence could look next season with Manchester United loan and Fulham transfer

Ryan Bertrand has left Southampton with Leicester City and Arsenal both linked with his services - but how will Ralph Hasenhuttl replace him as his defensive plan is mapped out

Southampton's defence will undergo big changes this summer, if Ralph Hasenhuttl's gets his way.

The Austrian has demanded that the club "double-up" in every position over the coming months in a move to add depth to his ranks, especially in his defence.

The departure of Ryan Bertrand has forced a tweak to those plans, however.

Southampton must now look to sign a ready-made replacement who they can trust to do the job on the opening day of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

Hasenhuttl is keen to sign far more than just a like-for-like replacement in Bertrand's position. The Saints boss wants to see two left-backs arrive, as well as a new right-back and a number of youth recruits to strengthen the club's academy ranks.

Teenage full-backs from Lincoln City (Sean Roughan) and Leicester City (Johnly Yfeko) have already had trials with Southampton ahead of the summer as the club consider whether or not to offer them academy deals.

And there have been plenty of senior defenders linked too with Antonee Robinson, Brandon Williams and Rico Henry all expected to be on the club's radar.

Henry, now a Premier League player following his promotion at Brentford, looks unlikely to depart his London club for anything less than £15m, well above Saints' spending power - but Robinson and Williams could well be up for grabs if offered Premier League game-time at St Mary's.

Robinson, meanwhile, could be up for grabs on a cut-price deal following Fulham's relegation.

The club could also use one of their loan spots to strengthen at full-back, despite Premier League side only being allowed to have two loan players at any one time.

This season, Saints used both of their loan spots to add Theo Walcott and Takumi Minamino to their squad - but Walcott has since made his stay permanent while Minamino has returned to Liverpool with talks over his future on pause.

And a loan swoop for Williams, who can also play at right-back, could allow Manchester United to keep a close eye on his development while delaying a final decision regarding the youngster's future by another twelve months.

Hasenhuttl has made one thing clear: Mohammed Salisu will not be considered Southampton's second-choice left-back next term, despite ending the season in that position.

The Ghanaian will play at centre-back next season with Hasenhuttl viewing him as a "third-choice option".

So as Saints prepare to start their business, and with the opening of this summer's transfer window now just ten days away, here is how the club's defence could look next season...
RIGHT-BACKS

FIRST CHOICE: Kyle Walker-Peters

SECOND CHOICE: Brandon Williams (loan deal, Manchester United)

THIRD CHOICE: Kayne Ramsay (Currently with Saints B)

CENTRE-BACKS

FIRST CHOICE: Jannik Vestergaard

SECOND CHOICE: Jan Bednarek

THIRD CHOICE: Mohammed Salisu

OURTH CHOICE: Jack Stephens

FIFTH CHOICE: Allan Tchaptchet (Currently with Saints B)

LEFT-BACKS

FIRST CHOICE: Antonee Robinson (Permanent move, Fulham)

SECOND CHOICE: Brandon Williams (loan deal, Manchester United)

THIRD CHOICE: Mohammed Salisu

One of the reasons given for last season's poor Fulham performance was the short close season following our play off success.
Surely TK can see that delay over Parker as next season's coach is simply shortening preparation time for next season.

Why should there be a delay, Decision may already been made, it could be That Parker has been told staying and now having a holiday. Maybe they just want to get everything in place before announcements are made.
