Why Chris Wilder is the only choice for manager
Charles explains why the Whites should look no further than the ex-Blades manager.

Scott Parker has left Fulham, and so begins the unenviable task of finding a replacement.

However, if Tony Khan has been paying any attention to English football over the past five years, there should only be one man he's considering right now, and that's Chris Wilder.

Not Steve Cooper, not Eddie Howe and certainly not Neil Lennon. The only man Fulham should even be considering right now is the former Sheffield United boss, and here's why.

His character
In terms of character, Wilder is everything Scott Parker isn't.

Week after week in the Premier League, we heard Parker feeding us lines about fine margins costing us and that the team weren't getting the results they deserved, continuing to back his underperforming player as we slowly but surely sleepwalked towards relegation.

Wilder doesn't make excuses in quite the same way.

After Dean Henderson made a major blunder against Liverpool back in September 2019, Wilder didn't mollycoddle him in the way Parker did with our players last season when mistakes were made, he told him that he needs to be better, and lo and behold, he stepped up.

"If he wants to play for the top teams, he wants to play for England then he needs to do better. He needs to concentrate more. It's a disappointing day for him. I am not going to put my arms around him. Simply he needs to do better," Wilder said.

Now, it may seem harsh as a newly-promoted club to lambaste your 22-year-old on-loan goalkeeper after a mistake against the champions-elect, but the tough love seemed to help Henderson and he's not looked back since, going onto become a bona-fide England international and a real challenger for David De Gea's number one shirt at Manchester United.

Perhaps this type of attitude is kick up the backside we need in order to light a fire underneath a squad that has been underperforming for far too long.

His style
How often do you get the chance to hire a true revolutionary in football? Once in a generation if you're lucky, and Fulham have that chance now with Wilder.

Don't be fooled by the fact this is a bloke called Chris from South Yorkshire who drinks copious amounts of Peroni. This man is nothing short of a tactical genius.

Wilder hasn't rewritten the book on how football should be played, but he's certainly added his own chapter to it with his overlapping centre-backs.

Imagine if a Brazilian or an Argentine came to England and took a team from League One to the top-half of the Premier League by using centre-backs that double up as wingers.

If a manager called 'Cristiano Wildinho' did that they'd be lauded as one of the greatest tactical minds on the planet, but because this is a man who used to manage Halifax Town he doesn't get the adulation he deserves.

"The way that he manages to set up his team awakens interest in me to learn from him."

"I would say the Sheffield United head coach is someone with new ideas and I have seen very few people with these ideas."

"I saw things in Sheffield United that I wanted to develop and I couldn't do it, I I don't know the history of the head coach, but he has done very well."

Those words were from Marcelo Bielsa.

Yes, Marcelo Bielsa, the football obsessive who the British media have spent the last three years fawning over, saying that Wilder has brought something to this game that he's never seen before, something that he wanted to develop himself, but for all of Bielsa's genius, he couldn't crack Wilder's code.

His adaptability
Wilder is about so much more than just overlapping centre-backs as well. Perhaps the most underrated aspect of his management how good he is at improving players and how adaptable he is.

The Blades side that was promoted in 2019 played a 5-2-1-2 with Mark Duffy in a number 10 role, but when the Yorkshire outfit were promoted he had to switch to a more pragmatic 5-3-2 turning John Lundstram, who could barely get a game in the Championship, into one of the Premier League's most industrious and effective midfielders in 2019/20.

Wilder's career at Sheffield United is littered with stories of players who have improved ten-fold under his management.

David McGoldrick went from being released by League One-bound Ipswich to being a genuinely undroppable player in the top flight, he transformed Chris Basham from a League One right-back into a centre-back who once made Alan Shearer's Premier League Team of the Season.

In fact, he even had many of us Fulham fans regretting not keeping hold of Ollie Norwood just months after we turned down the chance to sign him permanently.

The harsh reality is that some of our players desperately need to get back to playing their best stuff.

Imagine if Ivan Cavaleiro got back to the level we saw from him at Wolves? What would next season bring if Anthony Knockaert got back to the standards he set at Brighton? These are exciting players who are yet to reach top gear in a Fulham shirt, and Wilder could be the man to unlock that.

His CV
"We will hire a new Head Coach who is capable of achieving our goal of promotion and will be committed to Fulham and its supporters," Shahid Khan wrote in his statement after Parker's departure.

Khan wants a manager who is capable of achieving promotion. Well, how about a gaffer who has done it three times in his last four seasons outside of the top-flight?

Wilder has led Northampton to a League Two title in 2016, before achieving two promotions in three years with Sheffield United, taking his boyhood club back to the promised land of the Premier League.

These promotions were no mean feat either. He joined Northampton with the club in the relegation zone and left amid huge financial difficulties, with the players not being paid their wages for two months of that season.

Disregard last season's coronavirus-affected campaign with the Blades and Wilder has enjoyed season after season of success so far, and there's no reason why that shouldn't continue with Fulham.

In the famous words of Rio Ferdinand: "Get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him write whatever numbers he wants on there and let him sign it."

Former Fulham attacking talent joins Cheltenham Town, out-of-contract duo both staying

Highly-rated teenager now on Robins' books

Cheltenham Town have signed former Fulham attacking talent Jay Simpson,

The teenager has signed on a two-year scholarship contract, followed by a one-year professional deal.

Simpson impressed during a trial period at the end of last term and has started pre-season training with the first team.

Manager Michael Duff's players underwent fitness testing at the end of last week before their work on the grass commenced on Monday.

Experienced goalkeeper Scott Flinders and Irish defender Sean Long's contracts are yet to be confirmed, but both have been at Seasons to begin preparations for the 2021/22 League One campaign, having agreed to remain with the club.

League Two champions Cheltenham have so far brought in goalkeeper Owen Evans from Wigan Athletic and midfielder Elliot Bonds from Hull City, both on two-year contracts after previous loan spells at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

Out-of-contract former Fulham youngster pledges his future to Blackpool
Blackpool youngster Cameron Antwi has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Seasiders.

The 19-year-old, who was about to come to the end of his contract with the club, has agreed a new one-year contract.

The agreement also includes the option for the club to extend Antwi's deal by a further 12 months.

Antwi said: "I'm really happy to sign and extend my time at Blackpool

"The club has been good to me, I've enjoyed my time here so far and I'm just looking to push on now.

"Training with these players day in, day out last season and then the promotion at the end was class.

"It was a learning curve for me and a really good experience. I just want to kick on again now."

The midfielder made one appearance last season, starting in the 3-0 EFL Trophy group game victory against Leeds United's Under-21 side.

Antwi was unfortunate to be shown a straight red card late on, having started the game.

The Londoner, who was born to Ghanaian parents, signed professional terms with the Seasiders this time last year.

The midfielder was a regular starter for Pool's Under-18 side prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

News of Antwi's renewal comes as a boost to the Seasiders, who were disappointed to lose Nathan Shaw last week.

The winger turned down the offer of a new deal to sign for AFC Fylde on a permanent basis.

It follows the 20-year-old's successful loan spell at Mill Farm last season, when he made 19 appearances for the Coasters and scored twice.

A product of the Blackpool youth set-up, Shaw was out of contract at Bloomfield Road after two years as a professional at Bloomfield Road, where he was offered fresh terms.

Shaw was recalled from Fylde in January and made his EFL debut the following month as a substitute in Blackpool's 3-0 win at Charlton Athletic.

He subsequently spent a month on loan at Stockport County, playing twice in the National League in March.

Shaw made his Blackpool debut in the EFL Trophy in September 2019 and made five senior appearances in all.

Blackpool could be entitled to a compensation fee for Shaw as a youth product under the age of 24 who had been offered a new deal.

The renewal of Antwi's contract means the future of all of Pool's out-of-contract players have now been resolved.

Wilder holds Fulham talks

Chris Wilder is in talks with Fulham about succeeding Scott Parker at Craven Cottage, according to various reports this afternoon.

Parker left his job as Fulham boss earlier this week to take over from Jonathan Woodgate at Bournemouth having failed to keep the Whites in the top flight. The former Fulham midfielder saw his contract mutually terminated after a dramatic deterioration in his relationship with the club's ownership.

Steve Cooper was thought to be Fulham's first choice to take on the role, but press reports have suggested that the Londoners are not enamoured with the prospect of buying £3m to take the former England youth boss and his backroom staff from Swansea, who has guided to successive Championship play-offs. Wilder has emerged as a potential alternative with the 53 year-old holding initial discussions with leading Fulham figures last night.

Wilder has been out of management since leaving Sheffield United earlier this year with the Blades on the brink of relegation from the top flight. His achievements in lifting his boyhood club from League One to the Premier League in the space of three years were remarkable and, with Fulham placing a premium on Championship experience, the former Oxford and Northampton boss could be a compelling candidate.

It remains to be seen how Wilder, who lost his battle at Bramall Lane for full control of Sheffield United's recruitment, would adapt to Fulham's data driven transfer policy, currently overseen by director of football operations Tony Khan.

Fulham enter managerial talks with 53-year-old

Fulham are in talks with Chris Wilder over becoming their new manager, according to talkSPORT.

The Cottagers are searching for a new manager following Scott Parker's decision to depart for AFC Bournemouth this week.

Parker guided Fulham to promotion from the Championship in 2019/20, but following relegation from the Premier League last season, he has decided to move on.

Fulham are seemingly keen to make a quick appointment, though, with pre-season now underway and the new Championship campaign starting in early August.

According to talkSPORT, the club have entered talks with Chris Wilder over the vacant managerial role at Craven Cottage.

Wilder has been out of work since the middle of March, where he left Sheffield United following a disappointing campaign in the Premier League.

The 53-year-old won two promotions in three years with the Blades, guiding them from League One and up into the Premier League.

Wilder won 106 of his 227 games in charge of Sheffield United, and has won promotion four times as a manager.

The Verdict

Wilder is obviously held in high regard after the job he did at Bramall Lane.

He did an excellent job in turning the Blades around, taking them from League One to the top half of the Premier League in 2019/20.

Poor recruitment led to their downfall last season, but he is undoubtedly a very talented man-manager who knows how to galvanise a dressing room.

It would be a coup to bring him in, and he will be keen to prove his critics wrong as he looks to get back into management.

2 issues Chris Wilder will need to sort at Fulham ASAP if he takes Craven Cottage job

Fulham's managerial hunt continues after the exit of Scott Parker to AFC Bournemouth earlier this week and it looks as though the men from Craven Cottage could head down the Chris Wilder route.

Several names have been linked with the job including Steve Cooper and Javier Pereira and it remains to be seen exactly who is going to get the job in SW6 for next season.

According to talkSPORT, though, Wilder is in talks with the Lilywhites over a potential move to become their manager and that would be an appointment that could really excite fans of the club, given his record of winning promotions at several sides in the past.

What issues does Wilder need to sort out if he does put pen to paper at Craven Cottage, though? We take a look at two things that will be amongst his most pressing concerns...

Attacking options and Aleksandar Mitrovic
Aleksandar Mitrovic's future remains up in the air but there is a feeling that now Scott Parker has left the club he could well be willing to stay.

Even if he does remain for next season, though, the Lilywhites need to add more to their final third in terms of options in their squad.

Chris Wilder will be quick to assess the players he has available to him and then be looking to dip into the market and recruits for the final third may need to be the priority.

Will he stick or twist with his playing style?
This is an issue and decision that Wilder will need to make quickly as players get back up to speed ahead of next season.

If he arrives, he needs to work out whether the players he has can fit the mould of his 3-5-2 approach that yielded a lot of success at Sheffield United or whether he needs to go another way with the options at the club.

He's a manager more than good enough to find a system that will get the best out of the squad at Fulham, he just needs to work out whether he needs to change to fit them or whether there's enough of them that can adapt to fit his last preferred style.

First the Palace job collapses for Cooper, now Fulham ?

It has been confirmed that ex Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is in talks today to take over at Craven Cottage. With the news yesterday of the pending appointment of Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace, it's looking even more likely the lack of new opportunity for Steve Cooper means he will be at the Liberty - at least in the immediate future.

Simon Jordan, a man with numerous and many connections in the game spoke this morning on Talk Sport along with Alex Crook, and he stated "Steve Cooper is really keen to get out of Swansea after their near miss in the play-offs last season. He was one on Crystal Palace's radar and Fulham's as well, but that's seemingly not an option. Jordan added, "But I was told last night that Chris Wilder is in talks with Fulham. I think that would be a really good appointment with his pedigree in the Championship."

Speaking to a few reliable folk this afternoon the general feeling is that Chris Wilder is Fulham's number one target, not only does he come with no compensation, he does have experience at getting a side out of the championship. Cooper only has two failures. However, in doing that he has alerted numerous clubs that he is a bright and young manager with a career in the game already which is admirable. Many swans fans would prefer fresh blood at the Liberty, and we can all be rest assured Julian Winter has his sights on who he wants. What he needs though in the immediate is a decision now on Cooper by Fulham, which is looking less likely now Wilder has been interviewed.

This latest revelation now leaves Steve Cooper with nowhere to really go with Palace and Fulham both looking like they will be filling their positions elsewhere.

Chris Wilder moves ahead of Steve Cooper in race for vacant Fulham job

The former Sheffield United boss has opened talks with the newly-relegated Cottagers

Chris Wilder looks set for a return to management

Former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is in discussions with Fulham over the managerial vacancy at the London club.

According to reports by talkSPORT, Wilder is "in talks" with the Cottagers. Earlier this week they saw Scott Parker swap Craven Cottage for fellow Championship side Bournemouth.

Now, Fulham are looking for a replacement and it's thought Wilder is the front-runner. Steve Cooper, who led Swansea City to the Championship play-off final last term, is also thought to be under consideration.

But the understanding is that Wilder is in pole position. The 53-year-old left the Blades last March after a disastrous campaign at Bramall Lane.

They were well adrift all season but disagreements behind the scenes brought a premature end to his reign at his hometown club.

United were eventually relegated rock-bottom, with just 23 points from 38 games.

Wilder had led United to two promotions in three seasons, as well as an eyebrow-raising top-ten finish in their first season back in the Premier League.

After departing United he was linked with the vacancies at both Glasgow Celtic and West Bromwich Albion, but it now appears as though he is set for a promotion tilt elsewhere.

The Blades, now under ex-Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, feature high on the bookies' list of promotion favourites along with Fulham and Albion.

Fulham 'in talks with ex-Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder' to replace Scott Parker in Craven Cottage hotseat as he emerges as alternative to Steve Cooper for the Championship club's vacancy

Chris Wilder 'is in talks with Fulham' over becoming the Championship club's new manager.

The Craven Cottage club, relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, are searching for a new boss after Scott Parker left to join second-tier rivals Bournemouth on a three-year deal.

Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has been linked with the Fulham job but talkSPORT report that talks have also taken place with former Sheffield United boss Wilder.

Fulham are reportedly in talks with former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder

Wilder, 53, left Bramall Lane back in March with the club sitting bottom of the Premier League table with just 14 points from 28 matches.

He had taken from League One into the Championship and then up into the Premier League during the 2018-19 season before guiding them to a wholly unexpected ninth place finish the following year.

Cooper, whose Swansea side lost last season's Championship Play-off final to Brentford, has also been linked with the vacant manager's role at Premier League Crystal Palace.

Wilder guided the Blades from League One into the Premier League but they struggled in their second season and were relegated back into the Championship

However, Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira is now set to take over at Selhurst Park and Cooper could be edged out by Wilder for the Fulham job too.

Fulham, Bournemouth and Sheffield United, now managed by ex-Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, will be among the favourites to gain promotion in the upcoming Championship campaign.

Silva discussing Fulham job

Fulham 'have fairly extensive discussions with Marco Silva' about their vacant managerial position, according to Duncan Castles.

The journalist, who hosts the Transfer Window podcast with Ian McGarry, revealed that Silva is keen to return to management having not been in work since being sacked by Everton in 2019. He is particularly interested in working in England but has already opted against taking the West Brom job having held talks with the Baggies before they appointed Valerian Ishmael as their new manager.

Silva, who is understood to want assurances from owner Shahid Khan about his long-term plans for Fulham, has previously managed Hull City, Watford and Everton in England. He won the Greek Super League with Olympiakos in 2016, took Estoril up to the Portugese top flight and lifted the Portuguese Cup with Sporting Lisbon but his star has waned somewhat since his early success.

Fulham opened talks with former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder about succeeding Scott Parker last night and are also known to have a longstanding interest in the Swansea boss Steve Cooper. Former assistant manager Javier Pereira, who has also worked under Tony Khan at Fulham, is also believed to be in the frame for both the managerial job and a newly created director of scouting role at Craven Cottage.

Fulham agree terms with 43-year-old to replace Scott Parker

Fulham have agreed terms provisionally with Portuguese coach Marco Silva to replace Scott Parker in the dugout at Craven Cottage, per The Athletic.

There have been a stream of managers that have been linked with the Cottagers since it became apparent that Parker was moving on from Craven Cottage, and that was confirmed on Monday when the 40-year-old swapped London for the south coast at Bournemouth.

Steve Cooper looked to be the man being targeted at one point, and then it was claimed by talkSPORT that former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was 'in talks' with the club to take charge.

But a new twist has emerged, with The Athletic's Peter Rutzler reporting that former Everton, Hull and Watford coach Silva has agreed a deal to become the new head coach, with Duncan Castles revealing earlier that there had been extensive talks between the club and Silva.

Silva has been out of work since losing his job at Everton in 2019, and he has never managed in the Championship before despite being the manager of Hull when they were relegated to the second tier in 2017.

And he looks to be the man that the west London side will turn to to replace Parker in the dugout as the Cottagers look set to mount a promotion push next season.

The Verdict

It's a surprise that Silva hasn't been in work for over 18 months as you would have expected him to be courted by many clubs across Europe, but for whatever reason that hasn't happened.

Fulham clearly have a high standard of candidate that they're looking at with the names being banded about – Wilder had a great first Premier League season with Sheffield United but you get the feeling that it may have been just a great fit between the Blades and the boyhood fan that was Wilder.

Silva though gained admiring glances especially when he was at Watford – of course it didn't work out for him in the end at Everton but there's still a good coach in there and he will be looking to prove a point that he's good enough to mix it in the Premier League if he gets Fulham back there.

Cooper misses out again as Fulham go for Silva

Steve Cooper is looking increasingly likely to be the Swansea City manager when the new season starts as Fulham looked beyond him and appear to have agreed terms with Marco Silva to be their new manager.

Cooper was rumoured at the start of the week to be the man that Fulham wanted to replace Scott Parker who has joined Bournemouth but with Chris Wilder first instilled as favourite the attention of the Cottagers turned to Silva today with news arriving this evening that they appear to have agreed terms (Crystal Palace take note on how quick a managerial appointment can happen)

Silva – who has previously managed both Hull City and Everton – is expected to be officially unveiled tomorrow as the new manager and will be tasked with winning Fulham a third promotion in five seasons to the Premier League.

It now seems that Cooper has run out of options and will therefore remain at Swansea for the new season.  How much truth there has been in the rumours of discussions with other clubs we may never know but if those discussions are to be true then there are bridges to be built inside the Liberty Stadium not least with the playing staff who could feel slightly peeved at the way this has come about.

Fulham 'reach agreement with Silva'

Marco Silva has agreed to take over from Scott Parker and become the new Fulham manager in principle, according to the Athletic.

The Portuguese manager has been keen to return to English football and held extensive discussions with Fulham to ensure that the club's priorities matched his own. Silva has already held three English jobs having narrowly failed to keep Hull City in the top flight after winning eight of his 22 league games in charge. He moved onto Watford, where his strong start was disrupted by interest from Everton. Having taken five points from ten games, he was dismissed – with the Hornets hitting out at Everton's destabilising interest.

Silva, now 43, took the Everton job in 2018 guiding the Toffees to an eighth place finish in his first season in charge but he was sacked in December 2019 after a 5-2 finish left the club in eighteenth place and in danger of relegation. Silva hasn't held a job since and has never worked in the Championship.

He did guide Estoril to promotion from the Portugese second tier in 2012, won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting four years later and led Olympiakos to the Greek title in 2015. Silva's assistant during his spell at Goodison Park was the former Fulham winger Luis Boa Morte, which could lead to a return to Craven Cottage for one of the club's cult heroes.

Reports from Portugal claim that Silva has been offered an initial two-year contract to succeed Parker, with an optional additional year extension clause.

Fulham have held talks with Marco Silva about becoming their next manager.

Bookmakers last night suspended bets on the Portuguese coach succeeding Scott Parker at Craven Cottage after terms were provisionally agreed with the 43-year old.

Silva has previously coached Hull City, Watford and Everton and has been eager for a return to coaching.

Fulham have held talks with Marco Silva about becoming their next manager

Fulham have considered a number of options since Parker left for Bournemouth just hours after his departure from the west London outfit was announced.

Swansea City's Steve Cooper, Chris Wilder, Eddie Howe and Javier Pereira have all been discussed but Silva is now in pole position.

Silva has been out of work since being sacked at Goodison Park in 2019 when the Toffees were in the relegation zone, just 18 months after his appointment.

The Portuguese has also never managed in the Championship before, although he was in charge of Hull when they were relegated to the second division of English football in 2017.

His other stint in the UK saw him manage Watford but he lost half of his 26 games in charge at Vicarage Road.

Marco Silva: Ex-Watford and Everton boss frontrunner for Fulham job

Marco Silva won 19 of his 53 Premier League games in charge of Everton

Former Watford and Everton boss Marco Silva is the frontrunner to replace Scott Parker as the next manager of Fulham.

Parker left Craven Cottage to join fellow Championship side Bournemouth on Monday before the new season.

Silva, 43, also previously managed Hull and has been out of work since he was sacked by Everton in December 2019.

The Portuguese began his managerial career with Estoril and also had spells with Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos.

Parker led Fulham back to the Premier League at the first attempt after their relegation in 2019 but they went back down to the Championship last season.

He went on to succeed Jonathan Woodgate as the Cherries' head coach on a three-year deal after leaving Fulham by mutual consent.

In his first managerial job in England, Silva could not keep Hull in the Premier League and resigned after their relegation at the end of the 2016-17 season.

He went on to manage Watford the following season but was sacked midway through the campaign after an approach from Everton.

Silva went on to be appointed by the Toffees and guided them to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League in his first season but he was sacked in late 2019 following a 5-2 defeat by city rivals Liverpool.
