NUFC told to active relegated star's £10m release clause by former Toon defender

Back in May, The Athletic revealed that we were considering a move for Tosin Adarabioyo after discovering that a relegation release clause existed in the Fulham star's contract.

The Daily Mail followed this up just a few weeks ago, claiming that this clause will allow him to leave Craven Cottage for £10m this summer.

Now, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has talked up a potential move for the 6ft 5′ defender who was one of the shining lights in an otherwise dismal season under Scott Parker.

Here's what Howey told Transfer Tavern after naming the 23-year-old as a player he'd like to see Steve Bruce look at, feeling we may be tempted to raid the relegated clubs once again this summer:

"Normally what tends to happen is clubs that get relegated, other clubs will pick the carcass off it and they just pick the best players.

"Look at what happened to Bournemouth last year, for example.

"Decent player. Could he perform even better with some solid players around him? You know, possibly."

He fits the bill in terms of being a talented young player available at a reasonable fee, however it remains to be seen if a £10m move would fit in with the modest budget Steve Bruce is believed to have been handed this summer.

After all, recent reports suggest we're not being drawn into a bidding war for alleged top target Kristoffer Ajer, seeing us be linked with a cut-price move for former Sunderland loanee Dion Sanderson instead.

Why Luis Boa Morte's return has us all buzzing

To those not immersed in it, football can seem very strange. In the modern game, players are commodities – traded here and there and, as we've seen ourselves of late, managers are fast becoming the same. Only the fans are loyal these days and it would be wise not to develop too close a connection to whoever's wearing the shirt this week.

We can't help ourselves, of course. Sometimes people just fit and you grow to love them. Every club has cult heroes. Often they are celebrated as much for their eccentric as their achievements on the field. It can happen with the ones you least expect. The news that Luis Boa Morte was returning to Craven Cottage was a welcome boost at the end of a forgettable Fulham year. The Portuguese winger's ebullient character, his genuine love of the club and an almost unique connection to the fanbase allowed us all the glimpse a period on the horizon where the distance between the supporters and the side they are following had vanished.

It is entirely emotional, of course – but the game is about feelings first and foremost. Boa Morte is a trusted lieutenant of the newly appointed head coach Marco Silva, having worked with him at Goodison Park. It is absolutely right that the new man in charge should have a sounding board he trusts and, in this case, it helps that Boa Morte can offer some historical perspective as well as working relationships with some of the key figures at Motspur Park, like Steve Wigley and Huw Jennings, whom he worked alongside if only briefly when he was taking his first steps into coaching.

Boa Morte is no longer a coaching novice of course. He's held various roles since assiduously pursuing his coaching credentials after calling time on his playing career in 2013 – progressing from reserve and youth team manager at Sporting Lisbon, where Silva was the manager, to a brief managerial spell in charge of Sintrese whom he saved from relegation. There were stints as an assistant at Maccabi Haifa and a half a year in charge of Portimonese's under 23 side – as well as scouting assignments for Arsenal – before Silva took him to Goodison Park.

The bubbly Boa Morte has always wanted to return to Craven Cottage, having previously applied to join the backroom set up, and his arrival comes at an opportune time with Fulham preparing to retool for another Championship campaign and with talent to bring through from the club's academy. He'll be an additional reference point for the confident Silva, of course, but players who have worked with him before stress how he puts time into improving their technical ability whilst retaining his breezy and light-hearted demeanour, which isn't necessarily common amongst the modern coaching fraternity.

Members of the British media also recall Boa Morte making an impression when they took part in a press day for coaches taking their UEFA pro licenses. In exercises designed to prepare candidates for the fevered scrutiny that comes with a top job, the coaches were asked to imagine a scenario where they had been pictured leaving the property of the chairman of a big club, who were recruiting for a managerial replacement. The trainers encouraged the interviewees to trot out a bland non-denial denial to decrease any speculation. Boa Morte, as ever, charted his own course. He said the chairman was an old friend and said he wouldn't comment on his own future. Such disarming honesty, accompanied by that flashy smile, made even the cynical hacks raise an eyebrow or two.

Boa Morte will be determined to make an impact as well. His playing career might be in the distant past now, but the tenacity with which he played and even secured his path to Craven Cottage is worth recalling. Frozen out by Glenn Hoddle at Southampton, the winger was desperately searching for a new home and, with pre season coming to a conclusion, decided to see if Arsene Wenger would ring his old friend Jean Tigana. The Arsenal manager's intervention worked out well for everyone concerned as Boa Morte became a crucial cog in that sumptuously stylish promoting winning side. The winger still had to take matters into his own hands to convince Rupert Lowe that his future was in west London and not back on the south coast at the end of the season and that set up five more memorable years on the banks of the Thames.

Perhaps the highest compliment you could pay Boa Morte, who was mercurial and not always consistent, was that defenders dreaded playing against him. Gary Neville tells a story of scanning the Fulham teamsheet and dreading finding the lively left winger's name. He wasn't the only full back driven to distraction by Boa Morte's combination of pace, power and desire. Those two magnificent individual goals against Blackburn and Charlton will live long in the memory. Not even the centre backs were safe as Marcel Desailly famously found out when lead a merry dance late on as Luis lashed in that lovely equaliser at Stamford Bridge. Of course, that wasn't even the most significant goal Boa Morte put past the boys in blue. He still greets Paulo Ferreira with a thank you for slamming a clearance into his shins and securing arguably Fulham's most famous Premier League victory.

Boa Morte's time at Craven Cottage was full of vivid moments of joy. Several of them came as the Whites roared back to the top flight after an absence of more than three years. None was perhaps as emotional as when he secured promotion with what he made look like the simplest of finishes at Huddersfield. But the clinching goal against Liverpool, made by intelligent interplay with Steed Malbranque, on that day that Fulham said goodbye to Johnny Haynes had plenty of us in floods of tears at the Hammersmith End.

It shouldn't be forgotten that Boa Morte had plenty of chances to leave Fulham before he eventually departed for West Ham in 2007. Graeme Souness began a public campaign to bring him to Newcastle – but Boa Morte stayed loyal to the side that had saved his career. He gave us plenty of brilliant moments on the field, but my fondest memory of his time at Fulham came from when I was at Motspur Park for a open day organised for disabled fans. Long after the engagement with the players was supposed to be over, Boa Morte was kicking a ball around with young children, making sure they all scored a goal, laughing and joking, posing for pictures and signing any item to give the youngsters a memento of the day. I know that he became a fixture at events designed to raise money for charity, donating personally on more than one occasion. At a time when it is fashionable to cynical about ridiculously wealthy footballers, that shows the measure of the man.

None of this means that Boa Morte will be a success. That will largely depend on factors out of his control at present. But we can all count on his commitment and know that he'll bring smiles to Fulham faces again.

Swansea City enter race for in-demand Liverpool man with West Brom and Fulham also keen

Swansea City are interested in making a move to sign Liverpool attacker Harry Wilson on a loan deal this summer, according to The Sunday People (04/07/2021, p58).

Wilson spent last season out on loan with Cardiff City in the Championship and he managed to deliver another strong campaign in the English second tier registering seven goals and 11 assists in his 37 league appearances. It has been reported that the Bluebirds want to secure a fresh move to re-sign him this summer.

There have also been reports from Goal that Fulham are interested in securing a move for Wilson this summer as Marco Silva looks to freshen up his attacking options. It is also believed that they are facing competition from the likes of Brentford and Benfica for his signature.

While there have also been reports that West Brom are also in the hunt to secure a move for Wilson this summer. Although, it was claimed that Liverpool want a permanent move worth around £12 million for him rather than another loan switch.

The latest report from The Sunday People (04/07/2021, p58), reveals that Steve Cooper has now earmarked Wilson as a player that the Swans could bring in to try and add extra firepower to their squad for next term.

The Verdict

This would be an exceptional transfer if Swansea can pull it off, with Wilson a player that would be able to come in and replace the sizeable loss of Andre Ayew from their squad. The Wales international is someone that is completely proven at Championship level and he enjoyed another fine campaign making things happen in the final third for Cardiff last term.

However, Liverpool have seemed more determined to get a permanent exit for him this summer than in previous windows. Their price tag will be far too high for Swansea and any other Championship club to reach you would imagine. Therefore, it might be that another loan deal for him is the only option left on the table.

Securing Wilson ahead of teams like Fulham and West Brom would be a major statement of intent from Swansea. Cooper would be an ideal manager to get the best out of the attacker next term, but the Swans are going to have to work very hard to convince him and Liverpool they are the right club to send him to this summer.

Fulham defender Antonee Robinson attracting Premier League interest

Fulham defender Antonee Robinson is expected to be a man in-demand right now.

Fulham's left-back has been linked with Manchester City and it is thought other top-flight sides are keeping tabs on him as well, as per a report by The Athletic.

Robinson, who is 23-years-old, may well be thrown a Premier League lifeline this summer.

He played regular football at top flight level for the first time last season at Craven Cottage but couldn't prevent the London club from relegation to the Championship.

Manchester City have been linked with him since the end of the last campaign and could see him as someone to add competition and depth to their options at left-back.

However, the Premier League champions will have to see off competition from elsewhere if they are to lure him to the North West.

Robinson started his career at Everton but never made a senior appearance for the Merseyside club.

Instead, he gained experience out on loan at Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic before the latter made his move permanent in 2019.

Robinson was a real hit at the DW Stadium and 65 times altogether for the Latics to earn a move to Fulham last year.

The USA international may well be on the move again this year and The Athletic say he is thought to be wanted by a few Premier League clubs, with Manchester City potentially in the frame.

Fulham fancy Osayi-Samuel

New Fulham head coach Marco Silva is interested in making Fenerbahce winger Bright Osayi-Samuel his first signing, according to reports this afternoon.

Silva, who reportedly turned down the Fenerbahce job to take over from Scott Parker at Craven Cottage last week, is currently working remotely in London as he completes his quarantine period after arriving from Portugal. He will offer the former QPR winger a chance to return to England after half a season in Turkey, where he made nineteen appearances scoring a single goal.

The 23 year-old is understood to be keen to become a first-team regular with Fener, although the club are open to a sale should Fulham present an attractive offer. Osayi-Samuel scored thirteen goals in 113 appearances during four years at QPR having come through the youth ranks at Blackpool.

Man City linked with surprise move for defender as Pep Guardiola plots bargain raid

Antonee Robinson saw a dream move to AC Milan fall through on health grounds last year but is now being looked at by another heavyweight club

Antonee Robinson has become a shock summer target for Manchester City.

The American defender was relegated from the Premier League last season with Fulham. Robinson, 23, featured heavily for the Cottagers in his what was first taste of top flight football.

He made 28 league appearances, 24 of them starts, in a campaign that saw Fulham relegated to the Championship after just one season.

Now, reports claim that Pep Guardiola is looking into the possibility of recruiting Robinson.

The champions are looking to add a number of players to their squad as they look to build on a superb season that saw them finish 12 points clear of neighbours Man United in second.

Other top flight sides are said to also be in the mix for Robinson. He was signed by Fulham for a modest £2million last summer but it's estimated that their asking price will be closer to the £10million mark - still a relative bargain fee for a side like City.

He joined from Wigan Athletic but came through the ranks at Everton.

In early 2020, he famously saw a move to Italian giants AC Milan fall through. A deal was done between the Rossoneri and the Latics, with a £6m fee agreed.

But the move broke down when, following a medical examination, it was discovered that the US international had an irregular heart rhythm.

Speaking last year about his disappointment over the episode, Robinson admitted he was left in tears.

He said: "I didn't understand what the doctors said since they spoke in Italian, but then they asked me if I had ever had heart problems before.

"Then they sent me to a hospital where I made further checks and finally, after four to five hours, they took me to the office.

"I thought I would finally sign the contract, and instead there they informed me that they would no longer take me because of a heart defect found during medical visits.

"It was a shock to me, I was torn, and I couldn't hold back the tears.

"We were not talking about a knee ailment, but about a situation that leaves you puzzled."

Thankfully, the scare doesn't appear to have affected Robinson too much and a potential move to City would give him the chance to right the wrongs of the collapsed move just 18 months ago.

Fulham comment: Peterborough United ace should be on Marco Silva's radar instead of Bright Osayi-Samuel

Fulham boss Marco Silva will be looking to shape his squad this summer following his arrival at Craven Cottage.

Fulham are said to be eyeing up a move for Fenerbahce winger Bright Osayi-Samuel ahead of next season.

The 23-year-old winger, who was sold by QPR in the January transfer window, is said to be on Marco Silva's radar as he looks to prepare his squad for the 2021/22 campaign.

However, the Cottagers should look to move for Peterborough United's Siriki Dembele as an alternative.

Dembele is coming off the back of another impressive campaign with Posh, helping them win promotion to the Championship.

There has been some uncertainty regarding his future at London Road, regardless of their promotion. The 24-year-old still has a year remaining on his deal and has attracted interest from elsewhere.

Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest were both said keen on the attacker earlier this year. Fulham were also mentioned as potential suitors, and they should look to reignite their rumoured pursuit this summer.

After another strong season in League One, Dembele is ready to test himself in the Championship next season. Whether it will be with Posh or another team though, it awaits to be seen.

Dembele can play on either the left or right-wing as well as through the middle as a centre-forward.

The former Grimsby Town prodigy provides more goal-scoring threat than the recently linked Osayi-Samuel. He netted 12 goals and provided 12 assists last season, only two goal contributions less than the Fenerbahce man managed in 115 games with QPR.

Dembele, similar to Osayi-Samuel, is a direct and tricky dribbler and takes on defenders with no fear.

With Silva reportedly eyeing up a new winger, it will be interesting to see if Fulham reignite their previous interest in Dembele ahead of next season.

Silva out to restore reputation at Fulham

Once regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in Europe, Marco Silva's appointment at Fulham is very much a case of the Portuguese trying to prove his doubters wrong.

The former Hull, Watford and Everton boss was announced as Scott Parker's replacement earlier this week, signing a three-year contract, and handed the tough task of masterminding a third promotion for the Whites in five years.

Silva had been out of work since being sacked by Everton in December 2019 following a humiliating 5-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield just 16 months after the Toffees paid £4m in compensation to Watford for his services.

However, that bitterly disappointing finish to his Goodison Park career masked some positives from his time on Merseyside, where he is remembered by staff at the club as a deeply-focused but approachable individual, driven by a desire to make players better on the training field.

The emergence of Dominic Calvin-Lewin from a raw and rugged centre-forward prospect into an England international came under the watch of the 43-year-old, who guided Everton to a respectable eighth-place Premier League finish in his first season in charge.

Silva also signed Richarlison, Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne who have all gone on to become key men at a club that has turned over players and managers at an alarming rate since Iranian billionaire Farhad Moshiri took over in 2016.

But things turned sour midway through his second campaign.

With Everton fans demanding a more passionate sideline presence with less focus on possession stats from their manager, and after eight league defeats in 11 games with the side sitting in the bottom three, the axe was wielded.

Silva arrived at Hull in January 2017, largely unknown in this country but with a big reputation in his homeland after guiding minnows Estoril to promotion and the Europa League in successive seasons in his first managerial role, and led Sporting Lisbon to domestic cup success.

His appointment also came very much at a time when Portuguese coaches were in vogue in English football – largely because of Jose Mourinho's achievements.

Silva's previous job had been a two-year spell at Olympiakos, where he led the Greek giants to a 43rd league title and also a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a Champions League tie, before he left owing to personal reasons.

The Tigers were rooted to the foot of the Premier League when the young coach took over and looked certainties for relegation.

Although he ultimately failed to keep Hull in the top flight, under his guidance the team chalked up 21 points in their final 19 games, including a memorable 2-0 win over Liverpool, and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

That body of work was enough to convince Watford to appoint him as their manager in August 2017 after he walked away from Hull, claiming he had no real desire to coach in the Championship.

He got off to a flying start at Vicarage Road, guiding the Hornets to fourth in the Premier League in October after beating Arsenal.

But his relationship with the club soon turned sour and ended in acrimonious circumstances after his head was turned by an unofficial approach by Everton after the dismissal of Ronald Koeman.

With results tailing off after Christmas, Watford's notoriously trigger-happy owners showed him the door, claiming his courting with Everton had led to uncertainty around the team.

A manager who has had three different jobs in as many years would have alarm bells ringing in many club boardrooms, but Fulham owner Shahid Khan said he was bowled over by Silva after meeting him in Portugal last week.

He becomes the seventh permanent manager Khan has appointed since he bought the club eight years ago and the new man has a huge job on his hands following the Whites' dispiriting relegation last season.

All seven of the loan players signed by Parker last season have returned to their parent clubs but Fulham still boast a bloated squad – many of who face uncertain futures at Craven Cottage.

Stefan Johansen, Anthony Knockhaert, Maxime Le Marchand, Jean Michael Seri, Cyrus Christie, Neeskens Kebano, Aboubakar Kamara and Steven Sessignon all return after loan spells having been marginalised by Parker last season.

Silva will undoubtedly be keen to bring in his own signings, but he must also win round players who played significant roles in getting the team promoted in 2020 only to sit on the sidelines and watch highly-paid loanees brought in to replace them fail to keep the team in the top flight.

Proven Championship performers such as Michael Hector, Tim Ream, Marek Rodek, Denis Odoi and Joe Bryan played just 30 league games between them last season but will be called on again to get the team back up knowing they may not get to play if they are successful.

Silva must also decide if he wants to keep Aleksander Mitrovic – the club's highest-paid player and a proven goalscorer at Championship level.

The Serbian looked a shadow of the red-hot striker that scored 26 goals in the promotion-winning season against Premier League defenders, finding the net just three times, and there were concerns inside the club about his fitness and attitude with his relationship with Parker deteriorating towards the latter end of the campaign.

Silva also has the task of demonstrating there is a path to the first team for some of the club's highly-rated youngsters after the Under-18s won the 2020/21 national academy final.

His ability to improve and involve young players was another factor for his appointment and with academy graduates Tyrese Francois, Sylvester Jaspar and Fabio Carvalho all enjoying a taste of first-team involvement at the back end of last season he will be expected to try and integrate them into his squad.

In many ways, the squad Silva has at his disposal would be the envy of every other Championship club.

But as Fulham supporters well know after two tense trips to the play-offs in their last two seasons at this level, that is no guarantee of automatic promotion in one of the most demanding and competitive leagues in world football.

Teams that do have success are generally the ones that hit the ground running.

Silva will know there is little room for error with the pressure on for an instant return to the Premier League – and his reputation in this country very much on the line.

The best American players to have played in Europe - ranked

The United States' history is intrinsically linked with Europe and soccer has only strengthened those ties.

Since the 1990s a lot of the best American talent has crossed the Atlantic to leave their mark on European football.

You do not have to look far to find iconic US players in the continent's top league but which stars have been the most successful? We took a look at the archives to find out.

15. Weston McKennie
Give it a couple of years and Weston McKennie may very well rank a lot higher on this list.

The 22-year-old midfielder broke through at Schalke 04 before earning a move to Juventus, where he impressed during an all-round disappointing season in 2020/21 for the Old Lady, despite winning the Coppa Italia.

14. DaMarcus Beasley
Flying wideman DeMarcus Beasley got his first taste of Europe when he moved to PSV Eindhoven in 2004. During his maiden season in the Eredivisie he helped his side get over the departure of Arjen Robben, featuring heavily as PSV won the title.

This set him up for a globetrotting career where he took in spells at Manchester City, Rangers and Hannover 96 before returning home.

13. Eric Wynalda
Eric Wynalda made a name for himself with some free-scoring exploits for FC Saarbrucken.

Although they have fallen down the leagues more recently, at that time they were a Bundesliga side and Wynalda great form laid the foundations for countless other Americans to thrive in Germany.

12. John O'Brien
John O'Brien could have achieved so much more if not for the chronic injuries that plagued his career.

Coming through Ajax's coveted academy he forced his way into the starting XI in the late 1990s and was tipped for greatness. Unfortunately his body betrayed him and he was forced to retire in 2006, though not before he won two Eredivisie titles.

11. Cobi Jones
Leading USMNT appearance maker Cobi Jones played the majority of his club football for LA Galaxy.

However, he also had a spell with Coventry City back when they were a Premier League outfit.

10. Carlos Bocanegra
Best known for his four year stint with Fulham Carlos Bocanegra also spent time in France with Rennes and Saint-Etienne.

Rangers were another one of his clubs before he departed following the club's horrific financial problems.

9. Kasey Keller
Kasey Keller had a terrific career in Europe. The goalkeeper started off a Millwall, moving onto Leicester City where he helped the Foxes win the 1997 League Cup.

A move to Rayo Vallecano was next, followed by stints with Tottenham, Borussia Monchengladbach, Southampton and lastly, Fulham.

8. Brian McBride
Battling centre-forward Brian McBride was never the most prolific of strikers but thanks to his link-up play and hard work he won over Fulham fans following his move there in 2004.

Prior to that he had a less notable spell at Wolfsburg but Craven Cottage would be the place he made his name.

7. Michael Bradley
You don't receive over 150 caps for your country unless you are a special player.

MIchael Bradley more than proved his worth in Europe during the 2000s and 2010s with the pinnacle of his career being a 2012 move to Roma.

6. Christian Pulisic
Let's be honest. By the time he retires Christian Pulisic is going to be top of this list.

The forward is already a DFB Pokal and Champions League winner and there is clearly much more to come from the incredible talent.

5. Brad Friedel
When Brad Friedel arrived at Liverpool in 1997 he would never have believed that he would go on to make 450 Premier League appearances.

Yet, that was exactly what he did, taking in spells at Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham over the next 18 years.

4. Claudio Reyna
Claudio Reyna endeared himself to Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City fans with his never say die attitude in the middle of the park.

Prior to entertaining British fans he enjoyed five years at Bayer Leverkusen and he is now earning a reputation as a fine sporting director.

3. Tim Howard
The United States have produced some special goalkeepers down the years but few have been better than Tim Howard.

Plucked from obscurity by Manchester United at the beginning of the 2003/2004 season he immediately replaced Fabien Barthez as the Red Devils number one.

A terrific Premier League career followed with Howard going on to register 132 top flight clean sheets.

2. Landon Donovan
For a generation of fans Landon Donovan was American soccer.

Although he played the majority of his career in his home country - he has registered more MLS assists than any other player in history - he also made his mark in Europe for Bayer Leverkusen and Everton.

Donovan could have made an even bigger splash this side of the Atlantic, but instead choose to stay loyal to MLS.

1. Clint Dempsey
The streets will never forget Clint Dempsey's Premier League career. Scoring consistently for Fulham during a memorable five year spell he also played for Tottenham briefly.

Dempsey remains a favourite at Craven Cottage with his form helping the club record some of their best ever results.

Fulham barred Parker from Motspur Park

The Daily Mail carries an interesting insight tonight into just how acrimonious Scott Parker's final hours at Fulham became.

Fulham apparently barred Parker from their Motspur Park training ground as he prepared to part ways with the Championship club and take over at Bournemouth. The 40 year-old was denied the chance to pick up his personal belongings and say goodbye to club staff having been in Portugal on holiday. Fulham didn't want the integrity of their premises compromised as they opened up again for pre-season training, but the club were also miffed by the actions of their manager, who had initially demanded a hefty pay-off as he manoeuvred his way towards the exit door.

I'd like to get in Dembele from Peterborough too, exciting player.

Loved "Why Boa has us buzzing". It brought back so many great memories of the player and the man.  I remember a Fulham open day during the summer after a decent Premier League season (I think it may have been 2004 or 05, supporters enjoyed walking on the pitch and meeting some of those players who attended. Luis Bo was there with his wife and their son, he was utterly charming, happy to spend time with anyone who wanted a chat and even to introduced his family to us.  A thoroughly decent bloke.

Great to have Boa back at the Cottage. If Silva ever decides to sneak away from the Cottage as he did at Watford we should be sure to hang on to Boa who surely could be favourite as our next Head Coach.
