Fulham's stance on future of 33-year-old emerges

Fulham are willing to let goalkeeper Fabri leave the club this summer, a report from Sky Sports Transfer Centre (06/07, 17:15) has claimed.

Fabri joined Fulham from Besiktas for a reported £5million back in the summer of 2018, but has so far struggled to settle in at Craven Cottage.

The Spaniard has made just two senior appearances for the Cottagers, while a spell out on loan with Mallorca during the 2019/20 campaign also failed to provide much in terms of game time, with Fabri playing just four times for the Spanish club.

Now however, it appears as though the 33-year-old could be on the move again this summer.

According to this latest update, Fulham are open to allowing Fabri to leave the club on loan this summer, and are listening to loan offers for the 'keeper, although the source of the interest remains to be seen.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one to consider from a Fulham perspective.

It certainly makes sense for Fabri to move on elsewhere for next season, given it is hard to see him getting much game time for Fulham in the coming campaign.

However, with his contract at Craven Cottage soon to come to an end, you wonder whether a permanent deal may be better for them to explore here, then they can at least receive some sort of a fee for the 33-year-old.

Indeed, with Alphonse Areola's loan from PSG now over, and Marcus Bettinelli yet to agree a new deal, letting Fabri go would leave Marek Rodak as the club's only senior goalkeeper, meaning this move would surely send the club into the market for a new option between the posts.

Fulham reportedly win transfer race to beat likes of Spurs to signing

It's being claimed that Fulham have won the race to sign goalkeeper Ethan Horvath this summer transfer window, with them set to beat the likes of Spurs to his signature.

Fulham are back in the Championship for next season having suffered relegation from the Premier League last year, though many will have them as one of the favourites to go back up as things stand and new boss Marco Silva will need to try and deliver on that expectation.

New signings are needed to bolster the squad now Silva has been appointed and it looks as though one of his early arrivals will be an addition to the goalkeeping department.

This comes from talkSPORT's Alex Crook:

The Verdict

The 26-year-old has an interesting CV having spent time with Molde in Norway as well as playing for Club Brugge, who he joined back in 2017.

He's won 7 caps for the United States national team and is clearly a signing that will challenge for the number one spot at the club, though the likes of Marek Rodak will have something to say about that.

Fulham lost Alphonse Areola at the end of the season after his loan deal came to a conclusion whilst Marcus Bettinelli's future remains up in the air and the club is now willing to listen to offers for Fabri, so it makes sense that a new stopper is potentially on the way in.

Fulham report operating losses of £73m

Fulham reported operating losses of £73m for the financial year 2019/20, according to club accounts filed with Companies House yesterday.

Income from player sales – the largest being Ryan Sessegnon's departure for Tottenham Hotspur – did reduce this by £25m. The accounts detail that Fulham's income dropped by around £80m following their 2018/2019 relegation from the Premier League, with wages dropping by £15m. Fulham spent nearly £53m the following season on players and were promoted under Scott Parker with a squad worth £186m.

These accounts show just how heavily Fulham are reliant on Shahid Khan's personal backing to remain both solvent and competitive.

Fulham closing in on Horvath capture

Fulham are close to completing the signing of American international goalkeeper Ethan Horvath from Club Brugge, according to reports this morning.

The 26 year-old is a free agent after coming to the end of his contract in Belgium. He made 64 first team appearances during four years with FCB but played just seven games in the last two season after being usurped by former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Horvath won three Belgian league titles after moving from Molde, where he was signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and won the Norwegian double in 2014.

Horvath has won six senior caps for his country, famously coming off the bench to save a penalty in extra time of the CONCACAF Nations League final earlier this summer against Mexico to ensure the United States triumphed 3-2. The Colorado-born goalkeeper had been linked with a host of English clubs, including Tottenham and Huddersfield Town, but now looks set to become the latest American to make the move to Craven Cottage.

Horvath is set to battle Marek Rodak to be Marco Silva's first-choice goalkeeper following the departure of Alphonse Areola. Fulham are reportedly looking to loan out Fabri, who has made just two first-team appearances since his arrival in 2019, for another season.

Fulham continue worrying EFL trend as Cottagers post huge losses of £73million

The newly-relegated Championship side have released their accounts for the year ending June 30, 2020 - and they make for grim reading

The figures cover the vast majority of the elongated 2019-20 season, when Fulham earned promotion back to the Premier League

Fulham have announced losses of more than £73million.

Club accounts filed with Companies House yesterday reveal that the newly-relegated Cottagers made the huge loss in the financial year of 2019/20. That covered a campaign when Fulham eventually reached the Premier League, in a season elongated due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Income from player sales did reduce the losses somewhat, with £25m raised. The sale of Ryan Sessegnon to Tottenham Hotspur helped in this regard.

But the accounts detail that Fulham's income dropped by around £80m following their 2018/2019 relegation from the Premier League and that the average wage paid out in the Championship was £34,000-per-week - above the divisional average.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan

The figures continue a worrying trend among clubs in the EFL.

Only yesterday Sheffield Wednesday posted losses of £23million, whilst in May Stoke City posted a mammoth loss of more than £90million.

The Potters made losses of £91.6 million in 2019/20 - despite parachute payments still being paid to them following their relegation from the Premier League in 2018.

According to Kieran Maguire, the well-respected football finance specialist and host of podcast 'The Price of Football', the revenue-to-player wages average in the Championship is now at 130 per cent.

In plain English that means for every £10million clubs earn in a season, they spend £13m on wages alone.

Recently, a group of 10 EFL clubs, including Championship side Luton, called for changes to make the sport more sustainable.

Under the banner of the 'Fair Game' movement the group are calling for parachute payments to be scrapped, an independent regulator to be installed with powers to oversee the men's and women's game and for salary caps to be re-introduced in the EFL.

Fulham: Whites keen on Hughes

An update has emerged on Watford midfielder Will Hughes, regarding Fulham's interest in his services.

What's the talk?

According to The Mirror's Darren Witcoop, as relayed by Football League World, Fulham boss Maco Silva wants to bring Will Hughes to the club from Watford to bolster his squad this summer. The Englishman was promoted to the top-flight with the Hornets last season and now the Whites are hoping that he will return to the second tier.

Witcoop also claims that Slavisa Jokanovic wants to sign Fulham's Tom Cairney for Sheffield United, having managed him when he was in charge at Craven Cottage.

Cairney replacement

Tony Khan could land a dream Cairney replacement by bringing Hughes to the club this summer. The Fulham chief must ensure that he does everything in his power to tempt Hughes into returning to the Championship for another promotion push.

However, if Watford are preparing to make him a key player in their Premier League survival bid then he may not want to join Fulham as it would mean giving up regular minutes in the top-flight without any guarantee of ever getting the chance to get back there again. So, it remains to be seen how likely a transfer is at this stage, but Khan should work hard to pursue one regardless as there is no harm in trying.

Cairney is now in his 30's and only played 10 games in the Premier League last season, which suggests that the time could be right for him to part ways with the club. Whilst it may not be ideal to sell to a rival in the form of Sheff United, Fulham would not need to worry about what the competition are doing if they can seal a deal for Hughes as he could be a big upgrade on the Scotland midfielder.

Former Watford central defender Adrian Mariappa once lauded the Englishman, hailing him as "outstanding" for his performances at Vicarage Road.

He said:
"He's an outstanding player. To see the quality he's got, he has so much flair and a terrific player."

Hughes averaged an exceptional WhoScored rating of 7.19 in his 18 starts as a central midfielder for Watford in the Championship. Cairney, meanwhile, has not been able to average a score of 7.00 or higher since the 2017/18 campaign, highlighting his drop-off in form in recent seasons.

Therefore, the £30k-per-week beast arriving at the Cottage could be a major piece of business by the club and be the dream replacement for Cairney, which is why Khan must work hard to land him if there is any possibility of a deal being done.

What is the latest news with Will Hughes and Fulham?

Championship outfit Fulham are interested in a move for Watford midfielder Will Hughes, according to Daily Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop.

With new boss Marco Silva in place after the departure of former manager Scott Parker to Bournemouth, the Cottagers are likely to be on the prowl for their first signings of the window, especially now the second-tier side's players are back in pre-season training.

As per Witcoop, this signing could be a like-for-like replacement for Tom Cairney who has been linked with a move to Sheffield United – and Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic is said to be interested in a reunion after the duo spent just under three years together at Craven Cottage between 2015 and 2018.

But with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Jean Michael Seri both potentially leaving the club this summer now the club are back in the Championship, this signing could be needed regardless of whether Cairney stays or goes.

Harrison Reed, who admittedly is a more defensive player than Hughes, was also linked with a move away from West London when Leeds United's apparent interest was reported, but this rumour was quashed by the Yorkshire Evening Post who believe the 26-year-old is not on Marcelo Bielsa's list of targets this summer.

However, Will Hughes might be reluctant to leave Vicarage Road after making 31 appearances last season in their promotion-winning campaign.

He could therefore be tempted to stick with the Hornets even if he's relegated to the bench, just to get another taste of Premier League football.

With Hughes making appearing 62 times in his last two seasons in the top flight though, he may get his chance to shine again which could rule out any Fulham move for him.

But despite the central midfielder publicly stating his wish to remain in Hertfordshire, an agreement to extend his contract is yet to be struck between the club and the 26-year-old.

And the advantage of having longer-term financial security could lure Hughes back to the Championship with Fulham if a new deal isn't agreed before the end of the window.

His contract situation could also mean any attractive bid that comes in for him could potentially be accepted and reinvested back in the Watford squad as Xisco Munoz prepares his side for their first season back in the top tier.

So this move for the central midfielder is still a possibility in the next couple of months because of this, but certainly not a probability.

"Our main focus is promotion" – Fulham player explains what Marco Silva can expect from squad, sets club and personal goals

Portuguese newspaper Record today features an interview with Fulham winger Ivan Cavaleiro.

Following the club's relegation to the Championship last season, the 27-year-old now talks about their focus in getting back to the Premier League, claiming the Craven Cottage side deserve to be there.

"Clearly our main focus is the promotion. Fulham are a Premier League team and that's clear," Cavaleiro told Record.

"However, the Championship is very competitive and so we, as a team, have to be equally competitive to be able to reach the goal."

The player only had three goals and made no assists in his 37 appearances for the Whites last season. Now he claims to be focused to help the team to get better results.

"At an individual level, the perspective is always the same: to help the team. At the collective level, I hope that we have a good competition and, above all, that we put Fulham back in the Premier League."

Cavaleiro was also asked about the arrival of his compatriot Marco Silva for the manager role, who is arriving with a Portuguese staff and the winger will certainly get a good communication this season.

"Marco Silva can expect, from this group and from me, in particular, professionalism and companionship."

Marco Silva and his staff are expected to join Fulham's squad by the end of the week, as long as all the Covid protocols go as planned.

Following the pre-season, the Cottagers are making their debut in the Championship at home playing Middlesbrough on the 8th of August.

Cavaleiro focused on 'promotion'

Ivan Cavaleiro is focused on helping Fulham make an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Portuguese winger gave a brief interview with Portuguese newspaper Record this morning – and Cavaleiro spoke of his desire to ensure Fulham return to where he believes they belong.

"Clearly our main focus is the promotion. Fulham are a Premier League team and that's clear. However, the Championship is very competitive and so we, as a team, have to be equally competitive to be able to reach the goal."

Cavaleiro only scored three goals in 37 appearances last term, despite often being deployed as a centre forward by Scott Parker, and provided no assists. The former Wolves winger is hoping to deliver better in the Championship for Fulham this season:

"At an individual level, the perspective is always the same: to help the team. At the collective level, I hope that we have a good competition and, above all, that we put Fulham back in the Premier League."

Fulham announced Cavaleiro's compatriot Marco Silva as Parker's permanent replacement at Craven Cottage next week and the 27 year-old is looking forward to working under the new manager.

"Marco Silva can expect, from this group and from me, in particular, professionalism and companionship."

Simply The Betts

We can confirm that Marcus Bettinelli has officially departed Fulham following the expiry of his contract at the end of last month.

The Club's longest serving player, Bettinelli had been at the Club for 15 years, having joined in July 2006 at the age of 14.

The goalkeeper moved up the age groups before gaining some vital first team experience during successful loan spells with Dartford and Accrington Stanley, winning Young Player of the Season with the latter.

He was given a senior Fulham debut by Felix Magath the following season in a 1-0 win over Brentford in the League Cup, but it was when his former youth team boss Kit Symons took over that he really established himself in the First Team.

Following Symons' appointment, Bettinelli played in all but two of our remaining 45 fixtures – missing one league match through suspension, while being rested once in the cup – as Fulham pulled clear of the relegation zone. His form saw him come second, behind Ross McCormack, in the Club's Player of the Season vote.

Handed the number one jersey in 2015/16, Bettinelli found himself battling new signing Andy Lonergan for game time, but after re-establishing his place between the sticks suffered a nasty injury after colliding with teammate Matt Smith at Hull City just a few games into the campaign.

A gruelling seven months of rehabilitation followed, but Bettinelli fought his way back to fitness to start our final nine matches of the season.

That summer, the Whites' goalkeeping union had a new member when David Button joined, with the pair effectively sharing the gloves for the subsequent two campaigns as Fulham reached consecutive Play-Offs, with varying success.

On each occasion, Bettinelli ended the season as the Club's first choice. But while 2016/17 had a gutting ending at the Madejski, a year later Betts was celebrating a clean sheet at Wembley as Fulham defeated Aston Villa in the Play-Off Final.

It wasn't his busiest afternoon in a Fulham shirt, but his save to deny Jack Grealish at the end of a mazy run was fantastic, particularly as it took a deflection on its way.

The photos of Marcus celebrating with his father Vic – our Academy Goalkeeping Coach – at full-time was a beautiful representation of what the victory meant.

Bettinelli made his Premier League debut in a 4-2 victory over Burnley, and a month later led the team out as Captain in an away fixture at Everton.

It was around this time that he was given back-to-back call-ups to the senior England squad, having previously made a number of appearances for the Under-21s.

In 2019/20, Betts made 14 Championship appearances as the Whites returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Marek Rodák finished the season in goal, but often spoke of the support given to him by Bettinelli during that time.

A vocal presence on the pitch and an excellent shot-stopper, Bettinelli has been a fantastic servant to Fulham Football Club.

His efforts on the pitch are also matched off it, with Betts always keen to get involved in community and Foundation events, as well as anything involving the fans, for whom he always had all the time in the world.

Bettinelli departs having played 120 times for Fulham. His huge personality around Motspur Park will be missed on a daily basis, and we all wish him nothing but the best in his next chapter.

We look forward to welcoming him back to the Cottage either as an opposition player or a guest in the not too distant future.

"To have joined the Academy at the age of 14 and gone on to make the memories I have and lived every boy's dream is just unbelievable," Betts said. "To have worn the number one shirt is a massive thing for me. I feel extremely proud and extremely fortunate to have done that.

"My time at Fulham was mad special. I've been a fan, I've sat in the seat of a fan when I was kid watching the First Team play Juventus and stuff like that, so I've always had the Club in my heart.

"To come through the Academy and play on the pitch that I used to watch the likes of Mark Schwarzer on, will always be special to me.

"I started at the Club as a boy and matured into a man, and made some incredible memories with the fans."

And was that day at Wembley in the blazing May sunshine three years ago the highlight?

"Without a doubt. If you had said to a 14-year-old me that I would one day play at Wembley in front of the White Wall, I never would have believed you. So to have done that and then gone on to play in the Premier League at Craven Cottage was something so special and something that I'll hold forever in my heart.

"The day at Wembley was just ridiculous but, strangely, the day we played Burnley at home in the Prem was a really emotional day.

"Because I'd always watched Fulham in the Premier League growing up, to then represent us in the Premier League having come through the Academy, that day will always be special."

To see an Academy product go on to have the impact Bettinelli did is a wonderful thing to witness, and the goalkeeper is extremely grateful for the role the fans have played along the way.

"I just want to say a massive thank you to them," he said. "They've supported me from day one at Brentford away in the cup, all the way through.

"Even when I've been out on loan, they've always backed me. They've always supported me regardless of what's been happening or how we've been playing.

"To have that bond with them is special. I'll never forget the feeling of running towards the Hammy End and hearing my name being shouted, hearing the fans roar."

Tony Khan said: "Marcus Bettinelli has been an important part of Fulham Football Club for many years. Since stepping up from our Academy, Betts made major contributions to our First Team.

"He's helped create some important moments in Club history, including his contributions to our Play-Off campaigns in 2017, 2018, and 2020, particularly the clean sheet he kept at Wembley in our 2018 Play-off Final win against Aston Villa.

"He's also a great friend to so many of us at the Club and has been a great mentor to our younger players. We'll miss Marcus very much, and he'll always be considered part of the Fulham family."

Bettinelli leaves Fulham

Marcus Bettinelli's fifteen year spell at Fulham is over after the club confirmed this afternoon that the goalkeeper has left Craven Cottage after his contract expired at the end of June.

A popular member of the squad, Bettinelli came through the Fulham academy after joining the club aged fourteen and made his senior debut in the 1-0 League Cup win at Brentford in September 2014. He soon established himself as the club's first choice goalkeeper under Kit Symons and fought back from a horror knee injury at Hull City to eventually edge out new signing David Button as Slavisa Jokanovic's side went on a memorable 23-match unbeaten run.

Bettinelli kept a clean sheet at Wembley as the Whites went up by beating Aston Villa – making an excellent save from Jack Grealish – and earned an England call-up after briefly returning to the first team in the Premier League. He found first team opportunities tough to come by after that, making fourteen Championship starts before being replaced by Marek Rodak in 2020. He spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough and will now be looking for a new club.

Bettinelli told Fulham's official website: "To have joined the academy at the age of 14 and gone on to make the memories I have and lived every boy's dream is just unbelievable. To have worn the number one shirt is a massive thing for me. I feel extremely proud and extremely fortunate to have done that.

My time at Fulham was mad special. I've been a fan, I've sat in the seat of a fan when I was kid watching the first team play Juventus and stuff like that, so I've always had the club in my heart. To come through the academy and play on the pitch that I used to watch the likes of Mark Schwarzer on, will always be special to me. I started at the club as a boy and matured into a man, and made some incredible memories with the fans.

He picks out that the magical day at Wembley as the highlight of his Fulham career.

"Without a doubt. If you had said to a 14-year-old me that I would one day play at Wembley in front of the White Wall, I never would have believed you. So to have done that and then gone on to play in the Premier League at Craven Cottage was something so special and something that I'll hold forever in my heart.

Because I'd always watched Fulham in the Premier League growing up, to then represent us in the Premier League having come through the academy, that day will always be special."

Bettinelli also had a moving message for the Fulham fans, with whom he has always enjoyed a special relationship:

"I just want to say a massive thank you to them. They've supported me from day one at Brentford away in the cup, all the way through. Even when I've been out on loan, they've always backed me. They've always supported me regardless of what's been happening or how we've been playing. To have that bond with them is special. I'll never forget the feeling of running towards the Hammy End and hearing my name being shouted, hearing the fans roar."

Bettinelli made 120 senior appearances for Fulham. We wish him all the very best for the rest of his career.

Newcastle United join Fulham in race for PL player

Top-tier side Newcastle United have entered the running for Watford midfielder according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, in a major blow to Fulham who were also said to be interested in the 26-year-old.

Hughes made 30 appearances for the Hornets last term in their promotion-winning campaign – and has been a regular for his side for the past three years in the Championship and the Premier League.

But despite Hughes wanting to extend his stay at Vicarage Road, the midfielder is yet to agree a new deal with just one year left on his current contract and depending on Xisco Munoz's transfer plans this summer, he could look to cash in on the Englishman.

This reported interest from Newcastle United comes after Matty Longstaff's rumoured loan exit to Valerien Ismael's West Brom, although the Baggies have since identified Chelsea 22-year-old Trevoh Chalobah as another target to pursue.

With the 26-year-old making 77 appearances in the top flight for Watford, Steve Bruce is seemingly keen on recruiting him and the promise of Premier League football could take Fulham out of the race, who were relegated last season under Scott Parker.

At this stage though, no bids for the Hornets player from either side have been confirmed.

The Verdict:

Although Will Hughes will want as much playing time as possible and could get that in the Championship under Marco Silva, it would be a surprise to see him drop down a tier after battling his way to promotion last term.

In fact, he would probably take a limited amount of game time and a spot on the bench in the Premier League over a move back to the second tier. He's earned his move back to the top tier – and he will want to fight for a starting place there.

The only factor that has put his future in doubt is his contract. After entering the final 12 months of his deal, Hughes will want long-term certainty and if he can't get that at Vicarage Road, he may decide to move on.

Fulham confirm departure of keeper Bettinelli

Fulham have confirmed that goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has left the club.

The 29-year-old, whose contract at Craven Cottage recently expired, joined Fulham at the age of 14.

He made his senior debut for the Whites in 2014 and went on to make 120 first-team appearances.

"To have joined the academy at the age of 14 and gone on to make the memories I have and lived every boy's dream is just unbelievable," he told Fulham's website.

"To have worn the number one shirt is a massive thing for me. I feel extremely proud and extremely fortunate to have done that."

Looking out the signings made in the Championship so far in pre season a distinct lack of cash running through the League is frightening.

So Cav. made 37 appearances for us last season and is the same nationality as the manager and plays in the same position as Boa did, that must make him favourite for a place in the starting line up. So it may be felt that with Cav./Mitro/Reid/Carvalho to choose from for a front three there is no need to spend millions on a new attacking player.

Silva needs to be made aware that these players contributed to our dreadful record of only nine home goals last season.

You would have hoped that Marco would have completed his due diligence into Fulham's relegation without being made aware of the dreadful record quoted above. AKA the bl##din obvious!
So he (Marco) needs to address that as soon as
