Changes To Academy Structure

The Club is pleased to confirm the following organisational changes to its Academy structure.

Head of Football Development – Huw Jennings
    Academy Director – Mike Cave
First Team Development Coach – Colin Omogbehin

Head of Football Development - Huw Jennings

Huw has been with the Club for 12 years, a period which has seen the Academy develop several young players and achieve important milestones during his tenure as Academy Director. During this time, the Academy first achieved Category One in July 2012 as part of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) and has maintained this status since.

His role as Head of Football Development will incorporate three broad objectives:

Developing closer domestic and international links in the post-Brexit era to strengthen the Club's reach for opportunities to recruit talent and provide a platform for our existing players to develop and flourish.
Supporting the transitioning of Academy players into first team environments building on our existing structure.
Leading the FFCW programme as it transitions from the FFC Foundation to the performance side of the Club.

Academy Director – Mike Cave

Mike Cave will step up from Academy Manager to Academy Director, building on his success in delivering a top-class Category One environment. Mike has brought with him experience and skill from his time previously working in the sports business sector whilst at the media agency IMG, as well as supporting on the performance side as a UEFA A qualified coach and postgraduate alumni from Loughborough University. He will continue the Academy's great work of delivering its mission to support every player with an individualised, innovative and life enhancing football experience.

First Team Development Coach – Colin Omogbehin

Colin Omogbehin moves from the U23s setup to take on an exciting new role as First Team Development Coach. He will provide daily support, on and off the pitch, for Academy players transitioning into first team environments. Colin is an excellent role model, with vast experience of working with young players at Fulham FC and the South London area. He will help the players understand what is required of them to achieve success at senior level.

Huw Jennings said: "After 12 seasons at the Club, I am delighted to be moving into a new role. The Academy under Mike Cave and the excellent Academy staff team will continue to build the best Academy for Fulham. We are as determined as ever to compete with the best young player development programmes in the country, and Colin's appointment is a commitment to this objective. Similarly, the Club recognises the importance of the current exciting era for women's football, and I am looking forward to supporting Head Coach Steve Jaye and the team, as we build our programme for the future."

Fulham announce academy reorganisation

Fulham have this morning announced a significant restructure of their academy staff, with existing academy director Huw Jennings becoming the club's new head of football development.

Jennings, who has revolutionised Fulham's academy since his appointment back in 2008, will now oversee the club's domestic and international links to support post-Brexit recruitment, work specifically on guiding the club's young players into the first team set-up and leading Fulham's women side as they move into the academy structure after previously being under the Fulham foundation's umbrella.

He told the club's website: "After 12 seasons at the club, I am delighted to be moving into a new role.

Jennings' duties as academy director will now be undertaken by Mike Cave, previously Fulham's academy manager, and the current under 23s joint head coach Colin Omogbehin has been promoted to first team development coach. The club are currently recruiting for a new under 23s head coach to assume that role on a full time basis.

Fulham player eyeing Craven Cottage exit

Fulham midfielder Jean Michael Seri wants a move back to the Turkish top division with former loan club Galatasaray, according to the GS Gazete.

The 29-year-old spent the 2019/20 campaign with the Turkish side and made a respectable 27 appearances that season, recording two goals and three assists in the process, and is reportedly excited at the prospect of working with manager Fatih Terim again.

Since that loan, Seri has rarely featured for the Cottagers and was shipped out on another temporary deal to Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux for the second half of last season.

For a man who came to England with such promise after attracting interest from some of the Premier League's biggest clubs, his Fulham move has undoubtedly been a disaster despite appearing regularly for the west London side in his first season at the club.

However, their demotions from the top flight in recent years have contributed to his downfall and he will now be searching for a permanent move away from the Championship side.

Luckily for the Ivory Coast international, his four-year deal at the club expires next summer, but new manager Marco Silva will be hoping to at least regain some of the money his side paid for the 29-year-old.

Seri arrived from French side Nice for a reported fee of around £25m back in the summer of 2018.

The Verdict:

Fulham made several high-cost signings three years ago in an attempt to re-establish themselves as a solid Premier League side following their promotion.

But these moves weren't enough to save the Cottagers from the drop and Seri will be hugely disappointed they were unable to retain their place in the top flight.

If they had been able to stay in the Premier League for the 2019/20 season, Seri's Fulham career may have been so different and with a year of English football under his belt, would have probably gone on to flourish at Craven Cottage.

But with a permanent move on the card within the next 12 months, it's now down to the midfielder to ensure he ends his career on a special note with the Ivorian turning 30 in two days.

Liverpool 'ready to sell' £8m-rated striker Taiwo Awoniyi – Fulham, West Brom interested

Liverpool are ready to offload striker Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, with a handful of Championship sides showing interest.

Taiwo Awoniyi has only just been granted a work permit, six years after he joined Liverpool from Nigeria's Imperial Academy.

Now, having spent time training with Jurgen Klopp's first-team, the striker looks set for a move away from Anfield.

The Athletic has stated that the Anfield club have slapped an £8m price tag on Awoniyi, with Championship interest growing. The report states that second-tier trio Fulham, West Brom and Stoke City have all shown an interest in the 23-year-old.

Liverpool have already knocked back a bid for the striker this summer.

It is said that Belgian side Anderlecht came in with a bid of £4.5m for Awoniyi back in May, only for the Merseyside club to knock it back.

With interest growing and Fulham, West Brom and Stoke City offering the chance to stay in England, it will be interesting to see how Awoniyi's situation pans out this summer.

Thoughts?

Having spent the past six seasons on loan across Europe, it would be interesting to see how the Nigerian fared in the Championship.

However, excluding his time with Belgian club Excel Mouscron, Awoniyi hasn't been the most prolific striker. At £8m, there will be cheaper options available to the Cottagers, the Baggies and the Potters this summer, so they may be better off turning their attentions elsewhere in their bid to bolster their attacking ranks.

Hector helps Jamaica into Gold Cup quarter finals

Fulham's Michael Hector helped Jamaica qualify for the quarter finals of the Gold Cup last night as they overcome Guadeloupe 2-1 to progress from Group C.

The Reggae Boyz required an 87th minute winner from Junior Flemmings to complete a come from behind victory in Orlando last night. An own goal from Amari'i Bell had given Guadeloupe a surprise early lead, but Cory Burke's low drive quickly levelled matters.

Hector again lined up in a defensive midfield role for Jamaica and played over an hour before being substituted in favour of matchwinner Flemmings. Costa Rica's victory over Suriname ensures that both they and Jamaica have qualified for the last eight ahead of their concluding Group C clash on Wednesday.

Bobby Decordova-Reid did not feature with rumours suggesting that he is the member of the Jamaican squad that has contracted coronavirus. The Jamaican Football Federation confirmed that a member of their squad has fallen ill with the virus, but has not revealed the identity of the player.

Meanwhile, Hector has told the Jamaican Observer that there is a real confidence amongst the squad and that he has considered the possibility of going all the way in the tournament:

"It [winning the Gold Cup] would mean everything to me... it would be history and that's the personal goal I have set myself, and that is not to say I have not set other goals with Jamaica. For me and my family, it would be a proud moment [to win the Gold Cup], and no one has ever done it, so why can't we be the first? With the group of players we have, we fancy our chances to go very deep in the tournament. Obviously, in tournament football you can't think too far ahead as you have got to take it game by game."

Jasper on trial at Sheffield Wednesday

Fulham winger Sylvester Jasper is currently on trial with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 19 year-old played 45 minutes in Wednesday's 2-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Barnsley earlier today. Wednesday boss Darren Moore told Yorkshire Live: "We have got him here for seven days just to have a look at him. Pre-season allows me to look at these players who have been on my radar in terms of where I have been in the last couple of seasons.

Pre-season allows you to bring them in and look at them close hand without really committing. He has come today and had a good outing. He has got wonderful technical ability that we have seen today. He carries a threat and is a clean striker of the ball and he gets defenders on the back foot."

Jasper, comfortable on either wing, has made three senior appearances for Fulham since being handed his debut as a substitute in the FA Cup defeat by Manchester City last January. He signed a three-year contract with the club in August but doesn't appear to be in new manager Marco Silva's immediate first team plans. Jasper, who scored eight goals in sixteen league games for Fulham's under 23 side last season, is expected to feature in Wednesday's friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

Mitrovic returns in Ipswich friendly

Aleksandar Mitrovic made his return to Fulham action as Marco Silva's side continued their pre-season preparations with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Ipswich Town earlier this afternoon.

The Fulham side also featured Kenny Tete and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa. Neither club has released a scoreline from the fixture – in keeping with last week's training game at Derby County.

UPDATE: The Athletic's Peter Rutzler reports that two 45 minute training games were played at Motspur Park. Fulham won the first 2-1 – with goals scored by Fabio Carvalho and Mitrovic. Lee Evans scored for Ipswich. The second 45 minutes finished goalless.

'He has wonderful technical ability' – Sheffield Wednesday manager raves about Fulham trialist after friendly

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has praised trialist Sylvester Jasper's performance in their 2-0 friendly loss to Barnsley today, listing some of the attributes he will bring to the squad if he joins.

The Fulham youngster has linked up with the Owls during their pre-season camp and came on for Josh Windass in the 54th minute in this afternoon's friendly, allowing Moore to see Jasper in a match situation.

Although the Cottagers have dropped down to the Championship after finish 11 points adrift from safety last term, the 19-year-old is unlikely to be required for their promotion push next season and could potentially be loaned out to the Owls, who are in desperate need of more squad depth with the upcoming league season just a matter of weeks away.

Jasper scored eight goals and picked up three assists in the Premier League 2 youth division last season, but impressed many even before the 2020/21 campaign and was reportedly attracting interest from several second-tier sides last Autumn.

But even though he has already made a handful of appearances for Fulham's senior team in the Championship and FA Cup, the teenager is yet to play a full season of first-team football and may relish the opportunity of competing at the right end of the third-tier table.

Speaking to Wednesday's media team after the Barnsley friendly, manager Moore saved a word for Jasper and said: "We've got him here for seven days just to have a look at him.

"Pre-season allows me to have a look at these players that have been on the radar in terms of where they've been over the last couple of seasons.

"What pre-season allows is for you to bring them in and look at them at close hand without really committing.

"He's come today, and had a good outing. He has wonderful technical ability, he carries a threat and is a clean striker of the ball.

"It's an area where we feel if it's possible to strengthen, then we'll do so.

"We'll have another look at him on Tuesday."

The Verdict:

After being wanted by Championship teams last year, bringing the 19-year-old in on a temporary spell would be a great bit of business and one that isn't likely to cost the Owls too much.

Although Fulham will probably be willing to negotiate a cheap loan deal with Darren Moore's side, they may insert a clause into this agreement guaranteeing him a certain amount of starts or minutes he gets on the pitch to ensure this is the best possible move for Jasper.

The youngster's ability to play anywhere across the attacking midfielder three and up front could pay dividends in this respect – and he will not be wanting to sit on the bench in the third tier after excelling for the Championship side's Under-23s.

Fulham U23s hold on for Bromley draw

Fulham's under 23s survived a serious late Bromley onslaught to claim their second 1-1 draw of the week at Hayes Lane this afternoon.

Steve Wigley took charge of the side with the Whites still recruiting a new under 23 head coach following the reorganised of their academy set-up that was formally announced this morning. Just as at Slough on Wednesday night, Wigley gave a number of the stars of his title-winning under 18 side an opportunity to impress and a fluid front three didn't contain a natural centre forward with the pacey Michael Olakigbe starting as the most central of the trio.

National League side Bromley featured a number of trialists in their opening pre-season runout and the first half was largely devoid of clear cut chances. Corey Whitely had the hosts' first sight of goal but shot straight at Luca Ashby-Hammond. One of the Bromley trialists, Harry Forster, then unlocked the Fulham defence with a lovely through ball but Ashby-Hammond saved well after James Alabi had outsprinted Idris Odutayo to bear down on goal.

Fulham's only real opening of the first period arrived when a neat interchange between Terry Ablade and Olakigbe created an opening for the Finnish teenager, but the Bromley goalkeeper improvised to save with his legs. Wigley's side went in front seven minutes after the interval when Bromley's second trialist goalkeeper committed a dreadful error by dropping an unthreatening cross at the feet of Ablade, who could hardly miss from close range.

Bromley improved markedly when last season's top scorer Michael Cheek was summoned off the bench. Fulham were fortunate to preserve their lead when Jonathan Page cleared a goalbound header off the line, but were pegged back with twenty minutes to play by a fine individual goal from another trialist, Louis Dennis. The former Leyton Orient winger cut inside and burst past two tacklers before stroking a composed finish into the corner to level matters.

The Ravens might well have won it in the closing stages. Substitute Jude Arthurs saw a snapshot from 20 yards well saved by George Wickens and the hosts then passed up two good chances in quick succession at the death. A trialist's header from Arthurs' corner was scrambled off the Fulham line before another header from a different trialist whistled wide.

The under 23's are next in action at Charlton Athletic on Friday afternoon.

BROMLEY (4-4-2): Trialist; Partington, Webster, Bush, Trialist; Coulson, Bingham, Trialist, Trialist; Whitely, Alabi. Subs: Trialist, Trialist, Arthurs, Cheek, Trialist, Trialist, Roberts, Trialist, Trialist, Trialist, Trialist.

GOAL: Trialist (70).

FULHAM UNDER 23s (4-3-3): L. Ashby-Hammond; D'Auria-Henry, Larkeche, McAvoy, Odutayo; Okkas (Page 45), Harris, O'Neill; Pajaziti, Ablade, Olakigbe. Subs: Wickens, Parkes, Page, Lanquedoc, Tanton, Araujo.

GOAL: Ablade (52).

REFEREE: Constantine Hatzidakis.

Fulham: Cottagers want Tommy Doyle

Fulham are reportedly among the clubs eyeing a move for Manchester City youngster Tommy Doyle, according to Football League World.

What's the story?

Doyle has been with Manchester City since 2009 and has progressed his way through the club's academy system over the years. His impressive showings for their under-23 side has seen him feature in the senior squad on a handful of occasions.

The 19-year-old has made seven senior appearances to date for Pep Guardiola's first team, but it doesn't seem as though he'll feature on a regular basis for the Premier League champions any time soon.

Manchester City are reportedly keen to find him regular minutes in senior football away from the Etihad Stadium on a temporary basis, and it seems as though he won't be short of offers.

West Brom, Sheffield United, QPR, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, Swansea City, Bournemouth, Cardiff City and Coventry City are also believed to be keen on signing Doyle this summer, so Fulham won't have it all their way when it comes to trying to finalise an agreement for the midfielder.

Strength in depth could be key

Marco Silva's side will be aiming to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this season, and additional strength in depth wouldn't do any harm.

We've already seen the likes of Harrison Reed linked with a move to Leeds this summer, and even though a formal bid is yet to be made, it's good to see Fulham looking at other options heading towards the 2021/22 campaign.

Doyle could be an ideal signing for the Cottagers, with the youngster looking to make a name for himself in senior football having not been presented with much of an opportunity by Manchester City just yet.

Players who are hungry to prove themselves in senior football could provide the ideal competition for places in a team aiming to be challenging for promotion into the Premier League, and Silva would be hoping that Doyle could make a positive impact at Craven Cottage this term.

He has done that at under-23 level for City, with nine goals and 15 appearances in 50 appearances hinting at his game-changing ability – a trait which was lacking at Fulham last season. Even accounting for them playing at Premier League level, no player managed more than four assists in 2020/21 for Scott Parker's team, while only Bobby Decordova-Reid scored more than four times [Transfermarkt].

Former Manchester City scout Greg Walsh labelled Doyle as "phenomenal" and "one of the best of his age in Europe" in an interview with HITC back in 2020, and it's hard not to agree with that statement, especially when Manchester City have already given him seven appearances in their first-team squad so early into his career.

Fulham will know that they face a battle to land his signature this summer, but competition for the likes of Harrison Reed, Tom Cairney and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is likely to be welcome for Silva ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

If the newly-appointed Fulham manager can fend off numerous other suitors for the Manchester City starlet, it would be an enormous feather in his cap ahead of his first season in the Craven Cottage dugout. Shahid Khan must do all he can to try and ensure that Fulham win the transfer scramble for the 19-year-old.

Birmingham City send 'SOS' to released Fulham man, report claims

Birmingham City have 'sent an SOS' to free agent goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli after current no.1 Neil Etheridge was forced into hospital with Covid-19, reports The Sun on Sunday (18.07.21, pg. 61).

Bettinelli, 29, is a free agent following his release from Fulham.

The Englishman spent last season on loan with Middlesbrough where he made 41 Championship appearances but now finds himself without a club, after 11 years at Craven Cottage.

Etheridge meanwhile is back at home following a stay in hospital battling Covid-19. The Filipino shot-stopper proved a fan favourite at St Andrew's last season but now faces a spell on the sidelines as he recovers from illness.

The Sun on Sunday now reports that Blues could bring in Bettinelli as potential cover for Etheridge as the start of the new season draws closer – they face Sheffield United on the opening day on next season.

Interesting Parker's son being taken on as a scholar.
Watching the ups and downs since 1958, wouldn't have it any other way, what a roller coaster of a club.
