How Silva can get the best from Knockaert and Cavaleiro

As Marco Silva works through the various permutations to settle on his first-choice Fulham eleven, there's a lot of discussion about the composition of his best side. It is clear that a successful Fulham side will need more consistent contributions from their wingers. Is the new man in charge going to be able to rejuvenate the careers of Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert or will there be new faces on the flanks come the end of the transfer window?

Both players have endured their ups and downs at Craven Cottage, but I feel there is much more to come from both of them. Silva's penchant for pacey, counter-attacking football could work in favour of both Knockaert and Cavaleiro, who seemed shackled for much of the Scott Parker era, as well as Aleksandar Mitrovic. Silva has always liked a big target man to lead the line at his previous clubs, such as Troy Deeney with Watford, Cenk Tosun at Everton and Oumar Niasse during his time in charge of Hull City.

Fulham's wingers seemed badly underused by both Parker's system and their instructions over the past couple of years. You always felt playing them as inverted wingers neutered their effectiveness. Cavaleiro, is a pacey and explosive player, who needs space to run with the ball and quick build up play. Parker's approach seemed ponderous and laboured – allowing defenders to be able to nullify the Portuguese winger. Knockaert loves to run with the ball, turn into space and try to spark something – those off-the-cuff characteristics never flourished in the previous manager's very structured gameplan. Luis Boa Morte's return to the club and the fact that Silva and Cavaleiro are also compatriots could build valuable trust and understanding.

Silva would also have other options at his disposal. Fulham can currently call upon Neeskens Kebano, Aboubakar Kamara and Bobby Decordova-Reid in the wide positions – and I am excited about the possible addition of Harry Wilson, especially as the Whites have been missing a deadly set-piece taker for some time. I'd consider Cavaleiro and Knockaert as the stand outs in their positions, with Reid – who topped the scoring charts last season – and possibly Kamara more as forwards in the Silva system. That only leaves Kebano and young Fabio Carvalho, with Sylvester Jasper currently on trial at Sheffield Wednesday, and I'd urge caution about the latter despite his stunning cameos at the tail end of our Premier League season. He's clearly a bright young talent, but it may be asking too much for him to immediately become a mainstay in the Championship. Kebano could count himself unlucky not to have broken through into the first team, but we have seen from his performances towards the end of the 2019/20 season that he can definitely add another dimension to the Fulham attack.

There is also another looming question, especially in light of Fulham's recent history, which is whether any of these players would be able to step up to the top flight should Silva succeed in taking the club back up? Knockaert has been a Premier League regular in the past and, in the right system, he might be able to rekindle that sort of form. The jury is probably still out on Cavaleiro. We only have a season of evidence in a Fulham shirt to go on – and most of that was with him being played out of position. The way Silva sets up against Middlesbrough on the opening day will give us an insight into what he wants to do and how he wants to play. Both Knockaert and Cavaleiro are hard workers who never stop running – and those are essential commodities if you are trying to build a successful Championship side.

Silva has been clear that he wants to make a fresh start and is currently in the process of evaluating the squad he has inherited. With a new man at the helm and a bona fide Fulham legend as his right hand man, there should be a fresh opportunity for everyone to impress. A new season with a new manager and a new, attractive and attacking style of play for the returning fans to enjoy at Craven Cottage. What's not to like?

Newcastle United in Talks to Sign Mario Lemina

Newcastle United are in talks to sign Mario Lemina from Southampton in a £4 million move, according to Simon Jones of the Daily Mail. The midfielder spent last season on loan at Fulham, and Southampton are open to letting him leave.

Newcastle Looking to Sign Mario Lemina
Lemina Not in Southampton's Plans

Gabonese international Mairio Lemina is a product of Lorient's academy. He made his senior debut for the club in 2012/13. Marseille signed him for €4 million in 2013. He struggled initially, but soon found his feet under Marcelo Bielsa. His performances earned him a move to Juventus, with the Turin giants signing him on an initial loan in 2015. The loan, which cost Juventus 500,000, was converted into a permanent signing in April 2016 for €9.5 million plus €1 million in add-ons.

Lemina joined Southampton in 2017. He made over 50 appearances for the club, but he wasn't a key player. He joined Galatasaray on loan for 2019/20 and then Fulham last season. His only goal for the Londoners in 2020/21 came against Liverpool at Anfield, which handed the defending champions a sixth consecutive home defeat. Lemina is not in Southampton manager Ralph Haasenhuttl's plans this summer. Newcastle are among a number of clubs interested in signing him.

Initially not a starter, Lemina soon forced his way into Fulham manager Scott Parker's plans and impressed despite the club's relegation.

Mark Ashley's Reluctance Worn Down

Newcastle's initial interest in signing Lemina was reported last month. A swap deal was mooted, with Newcastle's Isaac Hayden going the other way. That fell through, however, after Mike Ashley refused to pay a transfer fee for the 27-year old. Ashley is only willing to pay for quality young players with re-sale value. Arsenal's Joe Willock, who impressed in a half-season loan at St. James' Park, and Swedish midfielder Jens Cajuste, have been linked with moves.

However, scouts are impressed by Lemina, and club staff have managed to convince Ashley that paying a £4 million fee for the player is a sensible move. Lemina has just one year left on his contract, so it would not be too difficult to agree a small fee.

He has interest from Nice, though, and the French side reportedly tabled a €3.5 million move. Newcastle, therefore, have to act swiftly to convince him. Talks are professing, and a three-year deal has been offered to the midfielder.

Madl retires from professional football

Former Fulham defender Michael Madl has called time on his playing career after struggling with a series of persistent knee injuries.

The Austrian international, who has spent the last three seasons with Austria Vienna, has turned his attentions to coaching after retiring at the age of 33. Madl already holds his UEFA B licence and has started work as joint coach of the Austria Vienna under-18 side.

Madl made 32 appearances for Fulham between 2016 and 2018 after becoming one of Slavisa Jokanovic's first signings at Craven Cottage, scoring his solidarity goal for the Whites against Charlton in February 2016.

What is the current situation with Aleksandar Mitrovic at Fulham? We take a look

Fulham boss Marco Silva has had a few weeks to assess his squad now and he'll surely have an idea of who he wants to add in the coming weeks of the transfer window before it shuts in just over a month from now.

The Portuguese is tasked with getting Fulham challenging up at the right end of the Championship table and, that said, he may well want to establish just what Aleksandar Mitrovic's future is going to hold given how prolific the Serbian has been for the Cottagers in the second tier.

A few weeks ago, Football League World reported that the Serbian striker's future at Fulham could very much go either way, but that his chances of staying were improved by the exit of Scott Parker.

The striker and the former Fulham boss, it must be said, did not see eye-to-eye overly and there was a high probability that, had Parker remained at the club, the striker would have pushed for an exit.

That, though, is not a problem now and, in the time since, we've seen little in the way of updates to suggest that Mitrovic is looking for an exit.

Clearly, there's still a chance he could leave with Fulham now back in the second tier but, at the same time, the main issue that was there for the striker no longer exists and, if he and Silva can find some common ground – something the manager might be wise to do given his shortage of striking options – we could again see Mitro light up the Championship this season coming.

Fulham lining up Trybull loan

Fulham are interested in taking Norwich City midfielder Tom Trybull on a season-long loan, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The German defensive midfielder is not understood to be in Daniel Farke's Premier League plans for the forthcoming season and the Canaries are open to letting Trybull make a temporary move to the Championship. The 28 year-old, who was part of the Norwich side who won promotion in 2018/2019, spent last term on loan at Blackburn Rovers, where he made 26 appearances and scored a single goal.

Trybull has made 85 appearances for Norwich since moving to Carrow Road from Den Haag four years ago. The Telegraph suggests that new Fulham head coach Marco Silva is eager to add to his central midfielder options ahead of the start of the new season.

Jean Michael Seri could have Fulham future

Fulham midfielder Jean Michael Seri could have a future at Craven Cottage.

What's the talk?

That's according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that the new Fulham manager Marco Silva is believed to be a fan of the central midfielder, having first spotted the 30-year-old when he played for Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal.

The report goes on to state, however, that nothing is decided regarding the Ivory Coast international's future in west London, although The Athletic does suggest that Fulham fans could well see a great deal more of Seri next season.

Seri must go

While Silva may well be a fan of Seri, there is very little evidence that would suggest Fulham should retain the services of the midfielder this summer.

Having been signed by Slavisa Jokanovic in a deal that exceeded £20m back in the summer of 2018, the 30-year-old has so far gone on to feature just 36 times for the Cottagers, scoring one goal and providing three assists along the way.

Indeed, the £3.6m-rated man – whose value has decreased by £23.4m since moving to Craven Cottage – failed to impress in the one season he featured consistently for the club, averaging a WhoScored match rating of just 6.55 over his 32 Premier League appearances in 2018/19.

This form resulted in Scott Parker sending the £65k-per-week midfielder out on loan twice in the past two seasons, first to Galatasaray in 2019/20 and then to FC Girondins Bordeaux last year.

As such, with poor performances, extremely inflated wages and just one year remaining on his current contract – meaning, if Fulham wish to receive any sort of fee for the Ivorian, they must sell him this summer. Exactly why Silva is not doing all he can to move the midfielder on as quickly as he possibly can is something of a mystery.

Indeed, if we were in charge of the Cottagers, the sale of Seri would be our utmost priority, as the fee received from his departure, as well as the money freed up in the club's wage budget, would easily allow Fulham to bring in a much better, not to mention more cost-effective, new signing ahead of next season.

Fulham eyeing loan swoop for Norwich City midfielder Tom Trybull

Fulham are said to be eyeing up a loan move for Norwich City midfielder Tom Trybull.

Fulham boss Marco Silva is looking to add some fresh faces ahead of the 2021/22 campaign but are still on the hunt for their first signing.

Now, it has been claimed that German midfielder Tom Trybull is on the club's radar.

The Telegraph has reported that the Cottagers are sizing up a loan swoop for the Norwich City midfielder as Silva eyes new recruits before the end of the transfer window.

Norwich are preparing for life back in the Premier League and Daniel Farke has a decision to make on Trybull's future after he returned from a loan stint with Blackburn Rovers.

The 28-year-old spent last season with Tony Mowbray's side, featuring 26 times for the club. In the process, he chipped in with one assist.

The Berlin-born midfielder has been with the Canaries since 2017, joining on a free transfer from ADO Den Haag. Since then, he has gone on to play 80 times for the club, netting five goals and laying on one assist along the way.

Thoughts?

Trybull has a good amount of experience at Championship level, notching up 76 appearances in the competition.

With a promotion to the Premier League under his belt, he would be a wise acquisition for Silva as he looks to take Fulham straight back to the top flight.

Are Fulham heading in the right direction?

There have been plenty of ups and downs since Shahid Khan took over Fulham Football Club in 2013. The relegations from the Premier League are the most obvious element of that, but there is also the ongoing debate about the club's recruitment of players.

Fulham have become known for pretty passing game and a desire to try and dominate opponents in the quaint and historical surroundings of their unique home, Craven Cottage. Ahead of a new campaign, it is appropriate to ask whether the club is heading in the right direction.

No Fulham fan needs reminding of the glorious 2009/10 season when Roy Hodgson's men surprised almost everyone apart from themselves by winning nineteen games in the revamped Europa League to reach the club's first major final since 1975. The Whites might have ultimately lost in the final, heartbreakingly to Atletico Madrid, but it was unquestionably one of the finest moments in Fulham's history. Hodgson's shrewd recruitment, typified by the quiet acquisitions of Damien Duff and Stephen Kelly, helped a well-drilled side punch above their weight only a couple of years after pulling off a miraculous escape from relegation.

That wasn't the only biggest loss suffered, for the fans, as Roy Hodgson left Fulham to join Liverpool after the final. It felt like a backward step when we appointed Mark Hughes who left after one season. We finally got our main target Martin Jol. It wasn't all sweetness and light under the Dutchman, with key players like Moussa Dembele, Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora moving on and there was a worrying end to the 2012/2013 season where Fulham flirted with the relegation zone after appearing comfortable at the mid-point of the campaign.

That summer saw Shahid Khan purchase the club from longstanding owner Mohamed Al-Fayed for a rumoured £200m. Could this be seen as a step in the right direction? In theory, it seemed so – but in practice the first season under the new ownership was shambolic. Fulham went through three managers, with an ageing squad, and slipped out of the top flight. Mistakes by experienced managers and some missteps by the new regime saw the Whites end their thirteen-year stay in the Premier League with a bit of a whimper. The decision to appoint Magath sticks out as a mistake in retrospect, as does the splashing of cash on Kostas Mitroglou, in a desperate bid to secure the goals that might lift Fulham to safety.

Magath's reign lurched to further disaster in the Championship, with the Whites picking up a single point from eight games seeing the German finally depart. Kit Symons steadied the ship but couldn't translate his promotion of young talent into a serious promotion push, although even Slavisa Jokanovic was sucked into a relegation battle after he took over the reigns at the Cottage. The Serbian's arrival was the catalyst for a change in Fulham's fortunes as he implemented an attractive and adventurous playing style and transformed the first team's fortunes.

Jokanovic's side forced their way into the play-offs and were arguably unfortunate to be eliminated in two tight semi-finals with Reading. That campaign was one of the most magical years as Fulham's style suddenly changed and Jokanovic constructed a midfield triumvirate to envy any in the division. Little did we know that the following season would be even more remarkable. Jokanovic's charges became the Barcelona of the Championship in a wonderful 23-match unbeaten run to end the season, overcoming the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion to triumph in the play-offs – with a wonderful win over Aston Villa at Wembley. One of the huge keys to promotion was the arrival of Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose relationship with Jokanovic proved crucial to moving to Craven Cottage, and the Serbian striker's impact on Fulham's fortunes can't be overstated.

The summer that followed now looks like a missed opportunity. We can talk about how much of statement Fulham were making with the signings, there is no kidding ourselves with the signings. We thought it would work, we thought finally some real investment. We kept spending and spending until we reached just over £100 million, imagine the shock on my face when we were announcing players for £30 million. This was a step back, some fans aimed their anger towards the owners, some believed Jokanovic was to blame.

Jokanovic's departure still remains a sticking point and the appointment of Claudio Ranieri unquestionably didn't work. Scott Parker did remarkably well to rebuild a sense of unity around the football club and, although the football was dull and never really recaptured the heights of a marvellous early home win over Millwall, winning promotion in his first full season as a senior manager was some achievement.

The following campaign was always going to be complicated with the impact of coronavirus meaning the shrinking of the close season and a short timeframe in which to strengthen the squad before both the beginning of the Premier League campaign and the closure of the transfer window. The initial faith in the stalwarts who had secured promotion seemed misplaced and, although the likes of Alphonse Areola and Joachim Andersen were undoubted successes alongside permanent acquisition Harrison Reed, Fulham ultimately went down limply having given themselves a shot at salvation with two wins on Merseyside.

A third relegation clearly hinted at a sense of complacency amongst the club's hierarchy with the same mistakes recurring once again and the lack of a long-term strategy. Are Fulham heading in the right direction? You'd have to say no on the balance of recent seasons. The new Riverside Stand could eventually prove to be a real boon, but the club are still wrestling with the financial impact of that disastrous 2018 summer splurge.

I firmly believe something needs to change. The Khans business interests are firmly established but they leave the key players too stretched – looking after the Jacksonville Jaquars, All Elite Wrestling and our beloved club. If Fulham remains a business investment, it should be subject to the same scrutiny as any other – and blaming successive managers seems to miss the point. Marco Silva might prove to be a fantastic appointment, but he can't be asked to work with one hand behind his back.

Fulham launch Muniz loan move

Fulham have launched a loan bid for Flamengo striker Rodrigo Muniz, according to reports from Brazil tonight.

The Londoners are the latest in a long line of European suitors for the 20 year-old forward, who has scored five goals in 24 appearances since breaking into the Flamengo first team last year. The youngster helped Flamengo last season and enjoyed a brief loan spell with Coritiba, where he scored once in six appearances, before heading back to the Rio-based side's first team squad. He helped his boyhood club win the Brazilian title in 2020 and the Supercopa and the Rio de Janeiro state championship twice.

The reports from Brazil claim that Fulham have offered around £860,000 to take Muniz on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent for approximately £7.7m. The young forward, who saw a proposed move to Atletico Madrid fall through earlier this year, is intrigued by the prospect of moving to London and has held positive discussions with new Fulham boss Marco Silva. He has also been the subject of interest from Middlesbrough and Al-Nasr, but those developments seem to have cooled.

Muniz has quickly become regarded as one of Brazilian football's brightest young prospects as a tall, strong and brave forward, who has shown a coolness beyond his tender years.

Ex-loanee could be key in Blackburn Rovers' pursuit of Fulham man

Fulham are eyeing up a move for Tom Trybull who had a mixed spell at Rovers last year.

Trybull endured injury frustration, his best form not coming until the final quarter of the season, and departed in the summer after making just 26 appearances.

Parent club Norwich City allowed him to leave last summer with just a fraction of his wages being covered, their return to the top flight coinciding in a salary hike for the 28-year-old who still has a year left to run on his contract.

Fulham, under new boss Marco Silva, are looking to make moves in the market in a bid to secure immediate promotion back to the Premier League, with Trybull linked with a move to Craven Cottage.

He has experience of winning the Championship, with Norwich in 2018/19, and that Championship experience could be key to Silva's rebuild.

Holding midfielder Trybull has made 80 appearances for the Canaries, including 16 in their last Premier League campaign in 2019/20, but is out-of-favour at Carrow Road.

A possible move for Trybull could also free up the prospect of Stefan Johansen being free to leave the Cottagers, the Norway international a target for Rovers in this window.

Johansen has had two separate loans in the last three seasons, including an impressive spell in the second half of 2020/21 with QPR who also maintain an interest in his services.

Rovers are in need of midfield reinforcements, with Trybull one of four options to have departed from last season's squad, with Lewis Holtby, Corry Evans and Stewart Downing not seeing their deals renewed.

Fulham, like Rovers, are yet to make any signings in the transfer window, their pre-season disrupted by the departure of Scott Parker to Bournemouth, with former Hull City and Everton boss Silva brought in as his replacement.

Derby County and Reading, both under a transfer embargo are yet to sign a player this summer, while Sheffield United are still waiting to make their first move.

Yes I liked him and he was also a good egg, a solid pro. He really improved us at the back in the early parts of SJ's tenure. Happy retirement Michael and I hope you find a satisfying new vocation.

Seri, Cav. and Knockheart each came to Fulham with good reputations and initially impressed even scoring some spectacular goals. However they have now established themselves as underperformers in many games over a long period and while it is nice to think they may come good under the influence of a new manager it is more likely wishful thinking.

The problem is that the new manager has only seen them in training, their true value will only be revealed under match conditions.
