Fulham could make 'aggressive' Championship winner Silva's first signing

Tom Trybull could be Marco Silva's first signing at Fulham if Premier League newcomers Norwich City are willing to loan him out for the season, as reported by The Telegraph.

With just one year left on the contract of the Berlin-born midfielder, you'd think the Cottagers might be fighting a losing battle.

After all, why would Norwich loan out a player they are going to lose on a free next summer anyway?

Fulham's approach may require some tinkering then but, if they're willing to pay a small fee for a player who moved to Carrow Road from ADO Den Haag in 2017, Canaries manager Daniel Farke is unlikely to stand in his way.

A key player during Norwich's Championship title-winning campaign two years ago, Trybull has fallen down the pecking order since then.

The former Werder Bremen youngster spent the whole of last season on loan at an underachieving Blackburn Rovers, finishing in mid-table despite having the prolific Adam Armstrong alongside him at Ewood Park.

Will Norwich let Tom Trybull join Fulham?

The Telegraph adds new Fulham boss Silva wants to add some depth to a squad that may struggle to bounce back immediately following relegation last season.

Fulham have lost loanees Alphonse Areola, Ola Aina, Ademola Lookman, Mario Lemina and Joachim Andersen, while Tom Cairney, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Tosin Adarabioyo have also been linked with other clubs.

28-year-old Trybull would bring some competition to the heart of a midfield also shorn of Kevin McDonald, while his cultured passing range should appeal to a purist such as Silva.

"I don't want to praise him too much because maybe Chelsea or Manchester United get an idea or whatever," Farke once told the Pink 'Un of Trybull when things were going much better for him at Norwich.

"He's improved from day to day and now from game to game. It was a brilliant performance (in a 3-1 win against Brentford). He was great in possession, he played finishing passes, he was really aggressive in each one-on-one duel. I am really happy he is in our squad."

Fulham considering move for newly-promoted star with Premier League experience

Fulham are considering a move to sign Tom Trybull this summer, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The Whites are looking at ways to strengthen their side as they prepare for life in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last term.

Trybull is facing an uncertain with current club Norwich City following their promotion to the top flight.

The 28-year-old has made 80 appearances for the Canaries including 15 during the club's last campaign in the Premier League two years ago.

However after suffering relegation the central midfielder was allowed to leave Carrow Road on loan last term with a move to Championship side Blackburn Rovers awaiting him where he made 26 appearances for Tony Mowbray's side.

With Billy Gilmour coming into the club it seems that Trybull's days with Norwich could be numbered and that might pave the way for Fulham to make a move.

It's claimed that any switch for the German would be a loan deal as Marco Silva looks to build a side that's capable of winning promotion.

With plenty of Championship experience to his name the Whites will be hoping that Trybull can be a seamless addition to their side ahead of the big kick-off in just two weeks' time.

The verdict

This could be a really good signing for Fulham.

Marco Silva will be looking for some technical quality in the centre of his midfield and the German could be just the answer.

Given his experience with both Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers it's clear that the 28-year-old is a player who knows the Championship inside-out and that means that this deal would be relatively risk-free.

Providing that they can strike an agreement with the Canaries, this would be a really smart addition.

Fulham eyeing up loan-to-buy move for in-demand forward

Fulham are interested in making a move for Flamengo forward Rodrigo Muniz this summer and they are hoping to secure a loan-to-buy deal with the Brazilian side for his signature, according to Brazilian outlet O Dia.

It is believed that there has been a lot of interest in Muniz throughout the summer transfer window to date from a host of clubs in European football.

That comes with the 20-year-old having so far managed to score ten times in his 27 appearances in the first team with Flamengo in Brazilian football to outline his potential.

According to the latest report from O Dia, Fulham have now entered the race for Muniz this summer and it has been reported that Marco Silva's side have come in with an offer that would see them take the 20-year-old to Craven Cottage on an initial loan deal for next term.

The report adds that a loan deal would set Fulham back around €1 million (£856,000) while they would also be interested in having a fixed permanent purchase option inserted into that deal. It is believed that a permanent transfer move could cost them around €9 million (£7.7 million).

The verdict

This seems like a potentially exciting piece of business from Fulham if they can pull it off this summer. Muniz is a player that clearly has a lot of potential and Silva is no stranger from taking young talents out of Brazil and offering them the chance to flourish in European football as he did with Richarlison when he took him to Watford.

Fulham need to add some extra attacking talent to their squad and Muniz could well be the sort of wildcard arrival that proves to be an astute signing out of the blue.

The chance to move to Craven Cottage for the season and experience life in the Championship is surely going to be a major draw for the Flamengo forward and he knows he has a good chance of featuring in West London.

The fact that Fulham are willing to potentially have a fixed permanent option in the deal suggests that they are convinced that the forward has the potential to make it in the Championship.

Given Silva's past record working with similar players, you would have to feel that this might prove to be a very wise addition to the squad if it all works out.

Report: Fulham interested in loan move for Norwich ace Trybull

Fulham are eyeing a move for Norwich City ace Tom Trybull, according to The Telegraph.

The publication is claiming that the Cottagers want to sign the ace on a season-long loan deal. But manager Daniel Farke is yet to decide whether he needs the former Den Haag ace for next season.

Trybull was allowed to leave the Canaries last summer, spending the year on loan with Blackburn Rovers. However, it was a frustrating campaign for the ace as he floated in and out of the team.

New Fulham boss Marco Silva is keen on improving his squad with Trybull able to bring experience. The 28-year-old has played across the top flight and Championship since joining Norwich in 2017.

Klaus Allofs once tipped the ace for Barcelona, claiming in 2012 Trybull wouldn't look out of place in their midfield.

Trybull would be a significant loss for Norwich

Trybull would be a significant loss for Norwich amid interest from Fulham in the ace.

Despite the fall off in importance to Farke's squad, the club can ill-afford to lose a player of his experience. With Kenny McLean out injured, the figure is the oldest player in central midfield to have played in English football. He has played 80 times for the club since his arrival.

Summer signing Pierre Lees Melou has the experience in Ligue 1. However, this is his first stint outside his native France. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Billy Gilmour was the other central midfield signing.

We saw exactly how the Norfolk outfit fared when they lacked experience during the 2019/2020 campaign. The side endured immediate relegation back to the second tier, finishing bottom of the division.

Letting Trybull leave could turn out to be a bad decision from Farke ahead of next term.

Riverside Stand Passenger Pier Proposal

The new Riverside Stand development will create an iconic high quality design that will establish a benchmark for mixed-use stadia, used throughout the year including on non-match days. Integral to this is a design that complements the riverside and creates a contemporary waterfront destination and a natural social gathering place for the local community, rather than just a football stand.

Fulham Football Club is incredibly fortunate to occupy a site overlooking the river.  The Riverside Stand development will significantly enhance the football stadium's interaction with the river. However, we consider it would be a missed opportunity if a river transport connection, serving the site by extending existing passenger boat services on the river - a sustainable form of transport - was not considered for use by the local community, football fans and visitors to the area.

Initial work has shown that the local area has great potential demand for a river boat service for commuting, leisure and community use.  With this in mind, it is intended that a pier is created as part of the site, which would connect the Riverside Stand development to central London and would offer the local community improved transport infrastructure.  The proposal is that the riverbus service from the Riverside Stand will form part of the existing network of riverbus services operating along the Thames, providing river access for leisure and commuter use to other parts of London as an alternative to road and rail services.

Fulham Football Club's project team has been working on developing a concept design for a passenger pier and the emerging design is shown in the first two pictures below.

The design of the pier, by Danish Architecture practice 'Maritime Architecture Studio', creates a new link along the riverside walk from Bishops Park to the South and Stevenage Park to the North. The extended walkway will be open to the general public for use throughout the year, including during match days when the main riverside walkway is closed, enabling the boat services to maintain operations for the public on match days. This will form an important, unique addition to the Thames Path route for all to enjoy throughout the day, every day. A new integrated ticketing and multi-event space is also proposed. A pedestrian bridge connects the extended riverside walkway to a floating passenger pontoon which includes covered space and a seating area for waiting passengers. A secondary boat pontoon is also being considered directly at the rear of the main pontoon.

Inspired by the historic Thames riverside, natural materials are being considered for the construction of the pier that improve with age and weathering. The design is also looking to integrate trees and landscaping to deliver ecological and wider environmental benefits and create an appropriate green natural 'edge' to the Riverside Stand development and its interaction with the river.

As well offering passenger services, the opportunity for deliveries to the Riverside Stand by boat are also being considered, potentially reducing current vehicle road trips of this nature to the site.

The concept for the pier is at the early design stage and, following feedback from this initial consultation and a navigational risk assessment, the design will be developed over the coming months ahead of a full public consultation later this year. However, we wanted to take this early opportunity to invite your initial views on the proposal. We have prepared an online survey that you can access via this link – smartsurvey.co.uk/s/FCC-2021/.

We are really excited about this opportunity and the benefits it will bring to the new Riverside Stand development, local businesses, residents, supporters, and the general area. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

What would Grimes and Wilson offer Fulham?

Being just a few weeks from the start of a new campaign, we are in what this website has historically called 'the silly season' of transfer rumours. Fulham are starting to be linked with a number of players as Marco Silva evaluates the squad he has inherited ahead of the Championship campaign, but two of the more creditable reports claim that the Whites are weighing up moves for the Swansea skipper Matt Grimes and Liverpool winger Harry Wilson.

Grimes seems certain to leave the Liberty Stadium at some point this summer as he has a year left on his current deal and Swansea are seeking to maximise what they can get for his services. The 25 year-old has plenty of Championship experience and has been a consistent performer in recent years. He might be the perfect replacement for Stefan Johansen, should the likeable Norwegian opt to turn last season's loan at QPR into a permanent deal or head for pastures new. Grimes would clearly be a leader in the middle of the park – something we will miss in light of Kevin McDonald's departure – and certainly knows how to pick a pass.

There are clear question marks over the Fulham futures of Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Jean Michael Seri. Even if the expensive duo were to stay and play a part in the Championship campaign, the Whites still might be short of alternatives in the engine room. Were they to leave, Grimes might well fit nicely alongside Harrison Reed in a deep lying midfield position – allowing skipper Tom Cairney to shine in the creative number ten role where he has previously excelled in the Championship. Cairney might have been used as a number eight alongside Reed at times by Scott Parker, but playing further forward allows Fulham to make the most of his undoubted technical ability and creativity, two things that were sorely lacking during the last two seasons.

Josh Onomah has shown glimpses of what he is capable of – there were definite flashes of quality during the tail-end of Fulham's play-off run two years ago – but he has failed to convert that into a series of consistent performances. There is also a debate about where best to utilise the former Tottenham midfielder, who we didn't see much of due to injuries and a lack of form last season. Tyrese Francois, a talented academy graduate, is deservedly on the fringes of the first team picture but Steve Wigley has already hinted that a loan away from Craven Cottage might be in the offing for the young Australian.

Harry Wilson appears to have admitted himself that he needs to make a permanent move away from Anfield for the good of his development. There are obvious issues to iron out ahead of a transfer – Liverpool's £15m valuation may well prove a sticking point – but could the Welshman reignite his career at Fulham? Wilson has had several successful loan spells in the Championship and he possesses the precious ability to unlock defences as well as definite dead ball prowess. Nobody needs reminding that Wilson is also capable of spectacular long-range strikes.

The winger would arrive hungry and desperate to start every game to prove he can deliver on his undoubted potential. It would be unfair to pigeon hole him into one position as he can operate anywhere behind the striker – and that sort of versatility could come in handy during an arduous Championship campaign. He would provide competition for the likes of Cavaleiro and Knockaert – who I discussed yesterday – as well as Cairney (which might prove valuable as there must now be a question about how many games our talisman can manage), but arguably Wilson's best position sees him cut in from the right to strike at goal with his left foot.

Recruitment will need to be spot on in the next few weeks, with both a lack of spending due to the coronavirus pandemic and Fulham's own financial fair play position, influencing the market. Acquiring a couple of proven Championship talents would represent a solid start into giving Silva the resources he needs to be successful.

Johansen set to finalise move from Fulham to QPR

QPR are close to finalising a deal to sign Stefan Johansen from Fulham.

The two clubs have been in negotiations for several weeks but the deal was held up by the change of manager at Fulham, where Marco Silva recently replaced Scott Parker.

Rangers are set to pay around £600,000 for the Norwegian midfielder, who was outstanding while on loan with them during the second half of last season.

Johansen, 30, joined Fulham from Celtic in 2016. He has a year remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage.

Meanwhile, QPR assistant boss John Eustace is posed to take over as Swansea City manager.

Johansen having QPR medical

Fulham midfielder Stefan Johansen is having a medical at Queens Park Rangers ahead of a proposed permanent move, according to reports this morning.

The two London clubs have been in prolonged negotiations over the summer following the Norwegian midfielder's successful loan spell in Shepherd's Bush in the second half of last season. The talks were interrupted by the departure of Scott Parker as Fulham boss and the appointment of Marco Silva as his successor, but it is believed that an agreement has now been reached over the fee for the 30 year-old.

Johansen was one of Mark Warburton's top summer transfer targets after making a real impression on loan with Queens Park Rangers, scoring three goals in 21 appearances as the R's finished the season strongly. Johansen will leave Craven Cottage after five years with the Whites, making 136 appearances and scoring 21 goals as part of two Championship promotion-winning sides.

Fulham make official bid for Brazilian striker – Marco Silva wants to repeat Richarlison success

Championship side Fulham have submitted an official bid for the signing of Flamengo striker Rodrigo Muniz, according to reports from Brazil.

Outlet O Dia claims that on Thursday, the Whites made a 'formal' offer for the 20-year-old.

Fulham are reportedly trying to sign the player on a loan with an option to buy, and the Craven Cottage side would pay €1m for the spell, and then have a clause to make the signing permanent for other €9m.

O Dia says Flamengo even accepted a bid of €5m from Genk, but Muniz couldn't find a personal agreement with the Belgian side.

Then the Brazilian side started demanding €8m, but both Al Nasr and Atletico Madrid refused to meet that price.

Even Middlesbrough tried the signing on a loan with an option to buy, although there are no details on the outcome of Boro's attempt.

In Fulham's case, it's claimed their project pleased the player by the way the club showed their interest.

It's said Marco Silva had meetings with the striker's agent and made it clear that his plans is to do something similar to what he did with Richarlison back at Watford.

According to O Dia, Flamengo are now gathering all official bids to decide what they're going to do with Muniz, and want things sorted until the next weekend, as his agents are in Rio to get a transfer as soon as possible.

Abraham heading back to Fulham

Timmy Abraham is heading back to Fulham after Cheltenham Town decided against taking him on loan at the conclusion of his pre-season trial.

The 20 year-old has struggled to make an impact at Fulham after signing from Charlton Athletic in 2017. He has been loaned out to Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Raith Rovers over the past year and teamed up with Michael Duff's side in pre-season ahead of a proposed loan move.

The young forward played in three friendlies for Cheltenham – scoring twice against Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday night – but Duff has opted not to initiate a deal ahead of the new League One campaign.

Fulham set to sign Wilson for £10m

Liverpool winger Harry Wilson will become Marco Silva's first Fulham signing in a deal worth around £10m, according to various reports this afternoon.

Wilson had reconciled himself to a permanent exit from Anfield following this summer's European Championships after a succession of loans in recent seasons. The Welsh international spent last season on loan with Cardiff City, scoring seven goals in 38 matches. He scored eight times in 35 appearances for Bournemouth the previous season, whilst his most successful campaign came at Derby County, where he scored nineteen goals in 49 games as the Rams reached the play-off final under Frank Lampard.

The 24 year-old, who has only made three senior appearances in six years at Liverpool, has won 29 caps for his country – scoring five times at international level – and made three appearances for Wales at Euro 2020. He was sent off in the dying embers of their second round defeat at the hands of Denmark.

Wilson, a clever passer and a set piece specialist, had been the subject of negotiations between Fulham and Liverpool over the past few days. The Premier League club were holding out for an offer matching their £15m valuation, but appear to have accepted a Fulham bid that falls some way short of that figure. Wilson has been left out of Liverpool's friendly with Mainz this afternoon as a deal is believed to be extremely close.

Report: Harry Wilson misses friendly as Fulham transfer nears

Harry Wilson is now close to joining Fulham, according to reports. He misses Liverpool's friendly vs Mainz as a result.

Liverpool continued their pre-season on Friday as they took on Mainz in a friendly. Jurgen Klopp named a very strong XI, too, considering the players at his disposal.

One player not available, however, is Harry Wilson as the Welshman will reportedly join Fulham soon. Liverpool don't want to risk any kind of injury that could jeopardise that.

That's according to journalist David Lynch. If he's right, Wilson won't be a Liverpool player for much longer.

Harry Wilson to Fulham?

No real surprise here. Wilson, now 24, is more than ready to have some stability in his career.

He's never had a spot at Liverpool, instead leaving for loan after loan at various clubs across England and Wales. It's not ideal for any player.

In fact, it's almost certainly hurt his development. Wilson has had to learn a new club and new teammates every single year – that isn't easy.

A move to Fulham allows him to settle in and finally build his career.

And for the club, selling Wilson makes sense. They're after funds this summer in order to do more business – selling players they're not using is the best way to do that.

But it's a shame. Wilson never got a proper chance with the Reds and that's really just down to the era he came through in. There's little doubt that we'd have seen him at Anfield if he'd been around pre-Klopp.

Wilson has been at Liverpool since 2005 and was quickly tipped to have a future at the top. We certainly believed that would be with the club but it just wasn't to be.

So we wish Wilson all the best if he's truly off to Fulham this summer. Let's finally see what he can do.

£9m man wants Fulham move despite Atletico Madrid interest, talks begin

Flamengo striker Rodrigo Muniz is keen on a potential £9 million move to Fulham despite receiving an approach from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, as reported by Brazilian publication O Dia.

Things didn't go too badly the last time Marco Silva signed an exciting 20-year-old forward from Brazil.

The little-known Richarlison terrorised Liverpool on his Premier League debut in August 2017, which was certainly a sign of things to come. Four years on, he's an established top-flight star at Everton, an Olympic hat-trick hero and a big-money target for Real Madrid.

Perhaps Muniz feels he can go the same way should he swap Flamengo for Fulham before the summer is out.

Could Rodrigo Muniz be Fulham's answer to Richarlison?

According to O Dia, Marco Silva has held talks with Muniz's camp and is encouraging his Craven Cottage bosses to make the 6ft 1in frontman the first signing of a new era in west London.

Muniz is understood to be interested in joining too, flattered by the intensity of Fulham's approach.

The report adds Fulham hope to sign the youngster on an initial loan deal, one that, once made permanent, would set them back about £9 million.

Another Championship club, Middlesbrough, have made a similar offer, although it seems Fulham are in the driving seat as things stand.

Muniz has also attracted interest from Genk in Belgium, Al-Nasr in the United Arab Emirates and even Atletico Madrid in Spain.

Atletico offered £4 million up front for Muniz but appear to have backed out of the deal after Flamengo made it clear the Spanish club would have to double their initial bid to get the deal done.

If reports are to be believed, Fulham are also keen to sign Tom Trybull. The 2019 Championship winner is a tigerish, tenacious central midfield player at newly promoted Norwich City.

Report: Celtic have been monitoring Moritz Jenz for a long time

Celtic are interested in signing defender Moritz Jenz from Swiss side Lausanne-Sport, it's been reported by The Glasgow Times.

The outlet believes Celtic have been monitoring the player for quite a while and are now considering pairing him up with new signing Carl Starfelt.

The Bhoys landing Starfelt is welcome but with Kristoffer Ajer exiting the club and Christopher Jullien still recovering from a long-term injury, another is needed from the transfer market.

Jenz is primarily a centre-back, but can also fill in on the right flank. In Switzerland, he's been playing as the centrepiece of a back-three.

He made 31 appearances in all competitions last season, helping Lausanne to a mid-table finish.

The defender is German, but came through the Fulham academy and played extensively for their U23 side. That's probably why he's been on Celtic's radar for a long time. We know they've been scouting English football extensively over the last few years.

Jenz finally decided to make the move to Switzerland last summer, signing a three-year deal in August.

The Scottish Sun have reported, despite that contract, he could be available for as little as £1m. By Celtic's standards these days that's a relatively risk-free signing, especially if they've been monitoring him for a while.

This falls into the more believable realm of Celtic transfer rumours – he's affordable, has a good profile and has been known to the scouting team. You could easily see this one progressing.

As always though, we keep an open mind and look out for more updates.

How does Fulham's squad shape up in the Championship?

Marco Silva might be relatively new in the Craven Cottage hotseat, but he's quickly evaluated the squad at his disposal. While we don't know what decisions the Fulham boss has taken in his first couple of weeks in charge, he can't have been disappointed with some of the quality he has inherited. There's no doubt that Fulham's squad shapes up favourably with all of our competitors in the Championship. Tom Cairney and Aleksandar Mitrovic have proven their quality at this level and Harrison Reed's emergence as a tigerish midfielder over the past eighteen months was one of the few undoubted pluses of the Scott Parker regime.

Marek Rodak might have had a frustrating campaign – largely benched after the loan signing of Alphonse Areola – but the Slovakian goalkeeper is a proven performer at this level. He seized the first team shirt decisively from Marcus Bettinelli, having already displayed his Championship aptitude at Rotherham. He was one of the standout performers in the 2019/20 campaign, keeping fifteen clean sheets, and earning international recognition. Rodak now has the opportunity to stake his claim as Fulham's long-term number one – and I hope we will see him push on and claim the golden glove of the Championship.

His current understudy remains one of Fulham's forgotten men. Fabri, brought in during the £100m spending spree that followed our first promotion to the top flight under the Khans, is probably justified in thinking that he was never really given a fair crack of the whip at Craven Cottage. Can you judge a goalkeeper on two games? He might have dashed off his line a little recklessly against Wilfred Zaha but he kept goal well at Wembley against Tottenham – and we ended up recognising just how far short that back four was at the top level. You wouldn't be surprised to see him farmed out on loan again in the coming weeks and the abiding emotion has to be one of sympathy with a player who hardly got an opportunity prove himself.

The defence is probably the area of Silva's starting eleven that would deliver the most discussion. Centre back combinations have been a serious problem for Fulham in recent years. Injuries to the likes of Alfie Mawson and Terence Kongolo, the age of trusty stalwarts Tim Ream and Denis Odoi and problems with the defensive unit as a whole, have robbed a succession of managers of a steady base at the back on which to build. It took the arrival of Tosin Adarabioyo and Joachim Andersen to add a sense of security at the heart of the defence – and that promising partnership is no more after the Dane's highly impressive loan came to an end.

Silva has eight centre halves to select from in his first team squad at Motspur Park at the moment – Mawson, Kongolo, Tosin, Michael Hector, Maxime Le Marchand, Ream, Odoi and Jerome Opoku, recently returned from a creditable loan spell at Plymouth Argyle. That's far too many – and some will have to leave the club, if only for their own benefit, before the closure of the summer transfer window. Mawson appeared a good signing when Fulham were plotting a Premier League return, but the injury that wrecked his England chances perhaps should have been a warning when the club's hierarchy were parting with big money to bring him in from Swansea. The ball-playing centre back's dreadful luck – just think of how he injured himself putting on his boots against Huddersfield – was epitomised by another season-ending injury that cruelly cut down an impressive start to his loan spell at Bristol City.

Like Kongolo, you sense that if Mawson was able to remain fit for any length of time he would be able to demonstrate his capabilities at centre back. He has a chance to restart his Fulham career under a new manager – and the departure of Scott Parker could come at the perfect time for Mawson. It remains very difficult to pick out a preferred partnership because for all the little glimpses of Kongolo's quality, he too hasn't been able to put together a run of games since coming to the club. There's also Hector, who is currently on international duty with Jamaica, to consider. He might have been found wanting in the top flight but if he can recapture the imperious form that followed his introduction into the side last January then the former Reading defender should be able to force his way into Silva's plans.

Silva has a penchant for attacking full backs and that should be music to the ears of the Fulham contingent. Picking a first choice left back will be difficult: Joe Bryan has been there and done it in the Championship – both literally at Wembley with his brilliant brace against Brentford and in terms of supplying threatening service to Mitrovic from advanced positions. Antonee Robinson enjoyed an encouraging first season at the Cottage despite relegation and his pace could be an even bigger weapon at Championship level. I'd plump for Bryan, although it's a tough choice.

The new boss has five possible options at right back. It would be difficult to look past Kenny Tete in the first instance. The Dutch defender might not have showcased all of his qualities in a tough first season, but we saw fleetingly how he can deliver a dangerous cross. He's aggressive in the tackle and eager to get forward – and if Fulham can hang onto him – could prove a real asset in the Championship. The statistical analysis of Cyrus Christie's loan spell at Nottingham Forest suggests he was one of the division's strongest right backs last year and he will be a capable understudy, which means that the likes of Steven Sessegnon and Marlon Fossey might need more loan spells to get regular game time.

My favourite part of this squad is in midfield, where the side should come to life. There might be concerns about Cairney's fitness after a couple of injury-plagued campaigns, but he remains Fulham's most creative operator. On his day, we know he is one of the classiest midfielders in the Championship. Reed will offer industry, energy and bite at the base of the midfield and the talent of Fabio Carvalho is tantalising. There are question marks over whether Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Jean Michael Seri will feature in the Championship – the smart money must be on no – and, with Stefan Johansen set to complete a permanent switch to Queens Park Rangers, the rumour mill suggests the Whites are preparing to add central midfielders, with Swansea's Matt Grimes and the Norwich man Tom Trybull reportedly on their shortlist.

It was clear from watching the Whites last season that Parker's team was far too predictable and there was very little cover for Cairney in his preferred attacking midfield role. Josh Onomah shone towards the end of the promotion campaign and, after another stop-start season, you wonder whether he could reprise that role this term. Could Carvalho continue from where he left off with those eye-catching cameos in May? Or perhaps the imminent arrival, Liverpool's Harry Wilson, could take a central role behind a lone striker. He has flourished in that sort of position before, mostly notably for Derby when they reached the play-off final, and has the versatility to make it work.

Who Silva selects on the wings will be intriguing. All of his favoured systems have seen wingers servicing a tall front man and, even when Mitrovic was on the field last season, Fulham didn't play to his strengths. Most of Fulham's wide options appear underwhelming. Neither Anthony Knockaert nor Ivan Cavaleiro have hit the heights expected after their big money moves – although we can hope that the new manager can get something extra out of them. Neeskens Kebano hinted at his potential when he returned from the wilderness to spark Fulham's play-off run and I think we are yet to nail down Bobby Decordova-Reid's most effective position.

Mitrovic remains the division's most devastating striker. Keeping the Serbian has to be at the top of Silva's to-do list. He might have considered leaving Craven Cottage after the disappointment of relegation and being sidelined by Parker, but the simple fact is that Fulham won't be able to replace a forward of his quality. Adam Armstrong has had a couple of sensational seasons with Blackburn, but he has a legion of suitors – most of whom are now in the top flight. What's worrying is that there is very little back up for Mitrovic in the current squad. You can't call the use of Cavaleiro as a makeshift striker a success, whilst Aboubakar Kamara is still very hit and miss and Jay Stansfield, for all of his undoubted potential, remains very raw.

You can see why Silva is keen to recruit another forward because missing Mitrovic for any length of time would presently deal a hammer blow to Fulham's promotion hopes. I like the excitement of the rumoured move for Rodrigo Muniz, a bright, young and agile forward from Flamengo, who is apparently interested in working with Silva in London. The new boss is able to point to success he enjoyed in nurturing the talent of Richarlison – which probably makes him very attractive to young Brazilian talent.

At this point, we probably have more questions than answers when we consider what Silva's first team selection will look like against Middlesbrough on August 8th. You can put together any number of permutations for Fulham's first starting line up, given the sheer number of players in the club's current first team squad. My selection would look like this – Rodak; Tete, Tosin, Mawson, Bryan; Reed, Cairney, Wilson, Knockaert, Cavaleiro; Mitrovic – but I'd be interested in seeing what others think.

Flamengo reject Fulham's Muniz loan bid

Flamengo have turned down Fulham's loan offer for their young forward Rodrigo Muniz, according to reports from Brazil tonight.

The Championship club tabled a loan offer with an option to buy – believed to be in the region of £7.7m – for the twenty year-old striker, who was reportedly interested in moving to London after his representatives had held talks with new Fulham boss Marco Silva. But Flamengo are apparently uninterested in negotiating a loan move for their young star and have rejected the approach.

It remains to be seen whether the Whites will return again with an improved offer – or make an attempt to sign Muniz on a permanent basis.

How chairman Iain McInnes' Portsmouth connections helped take former Fulham and Millwall defender to Gosport Borough
Gosport Borough boss Shaun Gale revealed how chairman Iain McInnes played a crucial role in helping him bring former Fulham defender Matt Briggs to the club.

Boro have unveiled the former England under-21 international and one-time Premier League's youngest ever player as their latest summer recruit.

But Gale told how it was former Pompey chairman McInnes' Blues connections which put the wheels in motion for the move.

Guyana international Briggs, 30, is represented by Twelve Football Consulting - an agency run by former Pompey director John Kimbell.

Kimbell served on the Blues board during McInnes stint as chairman - and it was a recent conversation between the pair which alerted Gosport to Briggs' potential availability after leaving Danish top-flight side Vejle Boldklub.

'It's been going on for a good few weeks (discussions) through a friend of the chairman who's an agent, basically,' revealed Gale.

'He (John Kimbell) mentioned a lad to us and I had conversations and I met with him (Matt). I told him what our vision is, I know what he wants to do, I know there have been a few things throughout his career and life he's found difficult - I just think we fit the bill.

'He ticks the boxes that I need and I believe I can help him a lot, not just on the football, on the other side of things as well.

'We've managed to sign him, which is good for us, he's going to be a big player for us. He's fitted in well with the lads straightaway, he's a nice lad, he's a big signing for us.

'It's another great signing, great to get him over the line, but thanks to my chairman (Iain McInnes) again who's backed us.

'He was the one who initially got the contact and got the meeting set up, but backed me to get him across the line as well, so really pleased to get him in.'

Briggs was billed as England's next big thing when handed his Fulham debut in the Premier League at the age of just 16 years and 65 days against Middlesbrough in May 2007.

He was also capped by the Three Lions at under-16, under-17, under-19, under-20 and under-21 level in the early stages of his career.

But he was never really able to make his mark at Fulham, making just 29 appearances for the club, and eventually leaving for Millwall in August 2014 having had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Peterborough, Bristol City and Watford during his time with the Cottagers.

Briggs, now capped by Guyana at international level, arrives at Gosport having had spells at 14 different clubs in his career.

But Gale insists there is no denying the defender's potential given his impressive CV - and the Boro boss is determined to get the best out of him on the pitch and away from football.

Gale said: 'He's got ability, he's six foot four, he's a strong boy, he's an athlete who's driven and wants to do well. He's a massive, massive signing for us, he's a big plus to add to the players I've already got.

'I've got some really good players and he ticks the box down the spine of our team.

'It's a centre-half who, along with the centre-halves I've already got signed - Ryan Woodford is obviously experienced and played a lot of games at the level and above, Matt Casey is a young lad learning his trade and it'll be great for Matt as well - I've got Elliott Wheeler who can play there if needed.

'It's another experienced player so we've got good cover and it's a great signing for me and he's fitted in fantastically.

'There's no doubt of ability - I want to talk about the positives with him - but we've all had little blips throughout our lives along the way and a few bumps in the road.

'Ultimately, I'm here to help him as a player and to get the best out of him at Gosport and also to do other things around Gosport and help.'

Liverpool's Harry Wilson set for £10m permanent move to Fulham after the Wales international was left out of the Reds' pre-season win over Mainz by Jurgen Klopp in Austria

Wilson has spent most of his career out on loan but is set for a permanent deal
The winger is expected to join Fulham after spells at Cardiff and Bournemouth
Wilson made only two first-team appearances for Juergen Klopp's senior side

Fulham are closing in on a deal for Liverpool winger Harry Wilson.

The Wales international had been attracting interest from Benfica but the Cottagers have jumped to the head of the queue and it is understood Craven Cottage now looks like his most likely destination.

Wilson is currently still at the club's training camp in Austria but was withdrawn from the squad for Friday night's friendly against manager Jurgen Klopp's former club Mainz so as not to jeopardise any transfer.

Wilson made only two first-team appearances for Liverpool, in the League Cup and FA Cup

Liverpool expect to get around £10million for the 24-year-old former academy graduate, who has made just two first-team appearances for the club - in the FA and League Cups - but has spent much of his time on loan at Hull, Derby, Bournemouth and Cardiff.

Wilson made three appearances for Wales at Euro 2020 but did not have the impact he would have wanted and was sent off in the last minute of their 4-0 defeat to Denmark in the last 16.

The midfielder spent the last campaign in the Championship on loan at Cardiff City, where he scored seven goals in 33, and is now set for another season in England's second-tier.

Fulham managed only one season back in the top flight and finished 18th in the standings.

If Wilson completes a move to Craven Cottage, he will link up with Marco Silva, the former coach of Liverpool's rivals Everton.

Silva was named as Scott Parker's successor after the former midfielder left the west London club by mutual consent in June.

Liverpool's Harry Wilson set to join Fulham for £10m

Out-of-favour Liverpool winger Harry Wilson is on the brink of sealing a £10million move to Championship outfit Fulham, reports say.

After enjoying a decent season-long loan at Cardiff City, the 24-year-old forward is set to cut ties with the Reds outright this summer.

According to Portuguese journalist Bruno Andrade, Wilson will soon complete a permanent move to Fulham, having made just two competitive appearances for Liverpool.

The versatile forward came through the youth ranks at Anfield, fighting his way through the academy to his first senior contract in 2014.

However, Wilson's career at Liverpool has never gained momentum since his professional debut in 2017 in an FA Cup encounter against lower-league side Plymouth Argyle.

Indeed, his experience in Merseyside has been highlighted by numerous loan spells at Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Derby County, Bournemouth, and Cardiff.

Despite struggling to break into Jurgen Klopp's set-up, Wilson's delightful performances across those loan spells have earned him 29 caps for the Wales national team.

The Welshman has drawn attention towards his burgeoning talent over the past few years, becoming a genuine candidate for Liverpool's first-team squad.

However, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have made sure no one can come close to making the grade at Anfield when it comes to wide positions.

Now, Wilson is ready to terminate his underwhelming time at Liverpool for a new adventure at Fulham, who failed to keep hold of their Premier League status this past season.

After taking over the reins from Scott Parker, former Everton manager Marco Silva needs to replace seven loan players, who were instrumental at Craven Cottage last season.

The Whites, who alternated between the Premier League and England's second-tier over the past four seasons, are eager to return to the top-flight next term.
