Ryan Fredericks needs to do one thing to be a success at West Ham

Ryan Fredericks has been somewhat of an anomaly since joining West Ham on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2018.

The 28-year-old arrived at the London Stadium with a big reputation having just ripped up the Championship with the Cottagers.

Unfortunately for Fredericks, however, he has never really lived up to expectations with the Hammers.

He is out of contract at West Ham next summer (Transfermarkt). So this season may well be his final chance to prove himself.

Ryan Fredericks can still salvage West Ham career

It's almost as though the 28-year-old doesn't believe in himself. He seems to not trust in his own ability.

If Fredericks had more confidence, however, he would be able to make a big impact at West Ham.

He has all of the ingredients needed to succeed in the right-back or right wing-back role at the London Stadium.

The former Fulham man possesses truly blistering pace. In fact, he may have missed a trick by not becoming a 100 meter sprinter!

The 28-year-old actually possesses a decent delivery as well.

Fredericks is obviously behind Vladimir Coufal in the right-back pecking order at the London Stadium. And rightly so.

There is an argument to be made for the Hammers ace to be played as well as Vlad, however, when we face tough away games.

Much like he was utilised away at Aston Villa and Manchester United last season.

The 28-year-old West Ham man just needs to believe in himself more, run at opposing defenders and use his pace to better effect.

If he displays that during games, then he may well have a key role to play for the Hammers this season.

It's not too late for Fredericks to salvage his career at the London Stadium.

Wilson 'disappointed' with draw

Harry Wilson was disappointed that Fulham faded to draw against Middlesbrough yesterday despite his brilliant debut goal.

The Welsh winger, who joined from Liverpool last month, scored a fantastic opener after cutting in from the right flank but Marco Silva's side were denied an opening weekend win by Marc Bola's late leveller. Wilson told FFCTV of his frustration that the Whites couldn't hold on to all three points:

"It would have been nicer if my goal was the winning goal. I feel like 1-0 is always a dangerous scoreline, the other team is always in the game. We're a bit disappointed that we didn't create a bit more to try and get that second goal, but I think for a lot of the game we played some good things and, as always, there's stuff we can go away and work on and make sure we get stuff right for Huddersfield."

Wilson was pleased with his personal impact and believes he has already developed a good understanding with his new Fulham team-mates:

"I think Josh done well to keep hold of the ball and set it back to me around the edge of the box and, when I get it there, I'm always trying to work half a yard to get the shot off and thankfully I was able to do that and it went in. To hear that roar once it hit the back of the net was fantastic and definitely a feeling I've missed.

I feel like on the right side we had quite a good combination. I feel like we're players that understand each other's game. We all want to play similar styles of football and I felt we had a nice balance with Kenny on the overlap, me coming in and Josh finding them pockets. I felt we put good moves together, especially in the first half and the early stages of the second. The more we play together, the better understanding we'll get and hopefully we'll be able to get more chances."

Harry Wilson sends message to Fulham fans following goal-scoring debut against Middlesbrough

Harry Wilson enjoyed a debut to remember as he made his first appearance in a Fulham shirt.

The Whites hosted Middlesbrough in their first match since suffering relegation to the Championship as they welcomed the Teessiders to Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon.

While the match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to Marc Bola's late equaliser for Neil Warnock's side, it was Wilson who was the star of the show.

The Wales international arrived at the club after leaving Liverpool this summer and made an immediate impact for Marco Silva's side after letting fly with a left-footed effort that was well-saved by Boro keeper Joe Lumley.

He did, however, find the net shortly after when he cut inside from the right flank and fired a low effort past Lumley to give Fulham the early lead.

Supporters who were back in attendance at Craven Cottage will be hoping that that performance will be the first of many like that from Wilson who shared a message with supporters on social media after the match.

Taking to Twitter, Wilson said: "Felt good to have the fans back today, debut goal at Craven Cottage as well.

"Disappointed to have not taken all three points but good performance to build on."

The verdict

Harry Wilson's debut was more than encouraging.

The winger is a player who has Premier League quality but the fact that he has so much experience at Championship level will certainly help him to hit the ground running.

Wilson could be an essential part of Fulham's promotion hopes this term and his debut against Middlesbrough certainly showed what he's about.

If he can recreate that performance during the rest of the season then it can only mean good things for Marco Silva's side.

EXCLUSIVE: Fulham, Boro, Stoke head seven-club battle for Brighton defender

A host of Championship clubs are battling it out for Brighton defender Leo Skiri Ostigard, TEAMtalk can reveal.

The highly-rated Norwegian joined the Seagulls from Molde in 2018, but is yet to make the first-team breakthrough at the Amex.

Ostigard has since spent time on loan, firstly with St Pauli and then with Coventry in the Championship last season.

Now, Brighton have been inundated with offers for the 21-year-old as Graham Potter ponders the next step for the defender.

The Seagulls boss had been considering  keeping him for the upcoming Premier League season.

However, we understand that Potter has now given the green-light for Ostigard to depart.

We can reveal that Coventry want him back, but there is plenty of other rival interest. We understand that Fulham, Stoke, Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Barnsley and Middlesbrough have also shown an interest.

Potter though will hope Ostigard picks wisely. Having seen the development of Ben White in the second tier, he will hope for similar success with Ostigard.

Onomah: That One Hurt

Josh Onomah was gutted that Fulham were unable to welcome fans back to Craven Cottage with three points on Sunday.

A dominant display from the Whites looked set to earn victory over Middlesbrough, but the lack of a second goal gave the visitors the chance to level in the 77th minute.

"That one hurt," Onomah told fulhamfc.com. "Conceding that late on after dominating for so many spells in the game.

"We played some electric football and created so many chances, so to concede late on really hurt.

"But hopefully down the line we'll see this as a point gained rather than two points dropped.

"We've just got to see this game as a learning curve, analyse it during this week and see how we created chances, and the next step is putting the ball in the back of the net."

The 24-year-old was one of Fulham's strongest performers in our season opener, and set up Harry Wilson for his debut goal – the first of many for the Welshman, Onomah expects.

"He's come in and been sharp from day one," he said. "We know he's got a wonderful left foot and he showed that with his goal.

"We've got a bit of chemistry down the right side, me and him, a good football understanding.

"I look forward to playing with him a lot this season and hopefully he'll carry on getting us goals."

Partnering Onomah in central midfield was Academy graduate Tyrese Francois, who was rewarded for his strong pre-season with a first start for the Club.

"For such a young guy, his maturity levels are so high," Onomah explained. "During pre-season he was a boss, dictating play, and credit to the Manager for putting him in.

"It just goes to show, if you train well he'll give you a chance, and Tyrese has done that. Him and Fabio, they've come in and really shown their talents."

Ahead of kick-off, the Fulham players opted to take the knee, something that was whole heartedly endorsed by the home fans.

"It was nice to have them back," Onomah smiled. "Not only were they cheering through taking the knee, throughout the game we could hear them, and they were really our 12th man.

"Credit to them, it was great having them back. That's what we've missed.

"It felt weird looking around and seeing the stadium packed with fans, but it's what we need, it's what football needs."

Fulham join battle for Brighton defender

Fulham are involved in a seven-club pursuit for Brighton defender Leo Ostigard, according to reports this morning.

The highly-rated Norwegian centre back has struggled to make a first team breakthrough at the AMEX Stadium but enjoyed strong loan spells with St. Pauli and Coventry City. Teamtalk suggests that Seagulls boss Graham Potter is ready to allow the 21 year-old defender to leave and Coventry, Fulham, Stoke, Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Barnsley and Middlesbrough are keen on signing him.

Talking Points: Boro

Welcome to the Championship

Our first game ended up being your typically ruthless Championship encounter, with Fulham dominating throughout but ultimately sharing the points. A draw against a Neil Warnock side is never a bad result, but the fact that Marc Bola's equaliser was Middlesbrough's only shot on target all day shows just what a smash-and-grab it was by the visitors.

The return of fans

What a beautiful sight seeing three full stands at Craven Cottage once again! The noise when Harry Wilson's shot hit the back of the net was magnificent, and the reaction to the Fulham players taking the knee was rapturous applause. A real feel-good atmosphere in the stands.

No more VAR

Fulham had a number of decisions go for and against us courtesy of VAR in the Premier League last season. It's not in operation in the Championship, but you suspect we would probably have had a penalty early in the second half if it was, when Fabio Carvalho was bundled over by Sam Morsy in the area.

Wilson's left peg

We've all seen the Harry Wilson highlights videos, so his fabulous technique is far from a shock, but to find the back of the net less than 30 minutes into your Fulham debut was a dream. He'd already gone close with a stunning volley, and Joe Lumley also had to deny him one-on-one in the second half on what was a fine introduction to Cottage life for the Wales international.

Opening day point

The first game of the season hasn't been a prosperous one for the Whites in recent years, with Arsenal, Barnsley and Crystal Palace all beating us at the start of our previous three league campaigns. The last time we got a positive result in the curtain raiser was a match which had parallels to Sunday, when we bossed Norwich City in 2017/18, only for the Canaries to grab a late equaliser. Mind you, that season didn't end too badly...

Opening weekend observations

The overriding emotion walking away from Craven Cottage yesterday afternoon was disappointment that Fulham couldn't convert their dominance into three points. That was certainly how the players and Marco Silva saw it afterwards and the first fixture serves as a sharp rebuke to the idea that the Whites will walk this division. It never works out that way and Middlesbrough's muscularity showed just what an adventurous outfit, placing an emphasis on prettier football, will have to overcome in order to bounce straight back.

Neil Warnock was delighted with the point – and justifiably so. His side were well-drilled, robust and kept plugging away despite being a goal down. You wouldn't expect anything else. Warnock is made for this league and his substitutions changed the complexion of what was becoming a rather one-sided affair. Silva should learn quickly from how Fulham's advantage unravelled here – there is no doubt that Boro looked the more likely to pinch all three points after Marco Bola's equaliser.

The new era began brightly and there are plenty of positives that Silva and his backroom staff can point to. The Tete-Wilson axis down the right flank began brilliantly and could be a considerable weapon in this division. The Dutch defender's sense of adventure and crossing offers a natural attacking outlet that Fulham will need to exploit, especially when Wilson is so adept at drifting off the right flank onto his natural left foot. Wilson's wizardry will unlock plenty of backlines at this level and the early signs from his interplay with Tete, Josh Onomah, Fabio Carvalho and Aleksandar Mitrovic were particularly positive. He took his goal magnificently and looks a massive upgrade on the enigmatic Anthony Knockaert.

Onomah's inclusion was something of a surprise but there were plenty of reminders of just how effective he might be as an attacking force from central midfield areas. He released Tete with a couple of perceptive passes into space down the right and did fantastically to offer Wilson a bit of space at the edge of the area for the goal. Whether he can reprise the sort of displays that inspired Fulham's play-off push under Scott Parker on a consistent basis remains to be seen, but these were encouraging signs. The midfield can only get stronger when Harrison Reed returns to his role in the front of the back four – and that will clearly make Silva's side tougher to play through.

Silva's decision to blood Fulham's promising young talent was perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the afternoon. Francois did very well against an uncompromising midfield moulded in Warnock's image, moving the ball intelligently in a quietly efficient league debut that has been a long time in coming. Carvalho's creativity and zest was clear from the outset and he buzzed around to real effect behind the centre forward – having one shot blocked and shooting over after space opened up from a Mitrovic flick on. He will clearly play a key role as the number ten until Tom Cairney's knees are up to the hurly burly of the Championship.

There was plenty of angst about Mitrovic's overall display and the fact that he wasn't able to find the net. I'm of the firm belief that writing off our Serbian talisman is ridiculously rash and there was a sense that his role in the side might be a bit different under Silva. He fashioned a couple of good openings with headers for Carvalho and Ivan Cavaleiro and was effectively managed by Middlesbrough's centre halves. My feeling is with a bit more gametime in his legs and a first goal – hopefully at Huddersfield next weekend – he will be back to his devastating best. The use of Aboubakar Kamara as a late substitute in search of a winner suggests, however, that the arrival of Rodrigo Muniz can't come soon enough.

Fulham's defence was largely untroubled, which makes the fact that the Whites had to settle for point all the more frustrating. There will still be reservations about Antonee Robinson's defensive diligence – Matt Crooks did seem able to run through him at will at times yesterday – but Tim Ream remains a reassuring presence at the heart of the back four and his partnership with Tosin Adarabioyo, who made a brilliant block right at the death, is a strong foundation for Fulham to build upon.

The final takeaway is two-fold: firstly, having the opportunity to enjoy a game at the Cottage and debate it passionately in person afterwards, is wonderful. Of more immediate importance to Fulham's season is that the fact that the Silva era is still in its infancy. Patterns of play will take more than ninety minutes to emerge and personnel changes can make what seemed a pretty experimental eleven stronger. Avoid drawing too many cast-iron conclusions from the opening weekend as Fulham can certainly improve on their first outing.

Club's stance revealed as Leeds United plot swoop for exciting attacker

Leeds United are reportedly interested in a move for young Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho.

Leeds' under-23 investment in the last 12 months has been outstanding and has propelled the youth system forward immensely.

Another season of consolidation in the Premier League and the club will be looking at a long stay in the top flight, allowing more long-term planning and seeing the fruits of investing in these talented players.

Three youngsters have already been signed by Leeds in this window but it's clear the club aren't finished yet.

The Daily Mail claimed that the Whites are interested in Fulham's young forward Fabio Carvalho, who is currently in the final year of his contract.

Having emerged as a first-team prospect at Craven Cottage last season, he caught the eye with his first senior goal away to Southampton.

Now, despite his contract winding down, The Athletic are reporting that Fulham are relaxed regarding his future as they hold talks over a new contract.

Peter Rutzler shed some light onto speculation regarding his future during a Q&A, when asked if he had rejected a contract:

    Still looking into this.

So far I've no reason to doubt he turned down an initial offer (but can't confirm it yet, should find out more this week).

However, the feedback I've got so far suggests talks are ongoing and remain positive. Wouldn't be ringing alarm bells just yet.

It seems as though there's no all-out panic at Craven Cottage and that tells you a lot about his future.

He's one of their best youngsters and if the club thought he was genuinely going to leave, more would have been made of it.

I don't doubt Leeds taking a look at him if he is edging towards an exit, but his involvement in the Championship opener against Middlesbrough shows he's in their plans.

He's worth keeping an eye on though because if a deal is there to be done, Leeds might not be far away.

Sources: Stoke City medical underway as they edge Sheffield United, Fulham and Middlesbrough out of transfer race

Stoke City have won the race to sign Leo Ostigard on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion with the defender having a medical at the Potters this afternoon, Football League World understands.

Reports had emerged earlier today that Middlesbrough, Fulham and Sheffield United, alongside Stoke, were interested in signing the Brighton defender ahead of August's transfer deadline.

Football League World understands that Stoke are set to pull off a significant coup by edging their three Championship rivals to his signature.

A medical is already underway, with Stoke motoring on with a deal for the Brighton man.

The 21-year-old is amongst a talented pool of defenders on the books at Brighton, but he's awaiting a first-team breakthrough on the South Coast.

Instead, he's impressed out on loan with St Pauli and Coventry City, who he spent last year with in the Championship.

During his time with the Sky Blues, Ostigard made 39 appearances in the league under Mark Robins, as Coventry avoided relegation during their first year back in the second-tier. They had also been credited with an interest in re-signing the defender.

Stoke, meanwhile, started their Championship season with a 3-2 win over Reading FC on Saturday.

The Yorkshire Rose (217 Leeds Road, Huddersfield HD1 6NW) has previously been popular with Fulham fans. The pub stocks a wide selection of beers and offers good food, although fans are encouraged to arrive early as this is a small establishment and is likely to be busy on a matchday. Patrons are asked to wear masks at present.

The Turnbridge Working Men's Club (9 St Andrew's Road, Aspley, HD1 6SB) welcomes non-members and away fans on matchdays. It is usually busy on matchdays, so early attendance is advised.

The Magic Rock Tap Bar (Willow Park Business Centre, Willow Lane, Huddersfield HD1 5EB) offers excellent ales and good food as well, although it is about a mile or so from the ground.

Supporters travelling by train may wish to frequent The Head of Steam or The King's Head, which features in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, within the station itself.

The Boy and Barrel (Beast Market, Kirkgate, HD1 1QF) is around five minutes walk from the station and offers a good selection of beers and a lively atmosphere. The Parish (28 Kirkgate, Huddersfield, HD1 1QQ) is a similar walking distance away and stocks a wide selection of alcohol as well as having a highly recommend food menu.

Alcohol and food are available from serving hatches behind the South Stand. Excellent locally produced pies are reasonably priced and usually part of a pie and a pint deal. The main alcohol options are John Smith's, Fosters, Strongbow and red or white wine.

The Trust would like to thank our friends at the Huddersfield Town Supporters' Association for their assistance in compiling this awayday guide.

Aston Villa: Anguissa left out of Fulham squad

An update has emerged on Aston Villa target Andre-Frank Anguissa, following Fulham's opening Championship match.

What's the talk?

Aston Villa transfer target Andre-Frank Anguissa fueled speculation over the weekend as he was left out of Fulham's squad to face Middlesbrough in their Championship opener.

The Villans and Arsenal are both reportedly interested in the central midfielder, who Fulham are said to value at around £20m, and there has been no reason given for his absence as of yet.

Smith would adore him

Johan Lange must react to this news by swooping for Anguissa and acting on Villa's interest in him. It is impossible to say for sure, but his absence could be because he is not 100% motivated to play for Fulham with the prospect of a transfer on the horizon.

The season starting before the end of the window causes complications in that sense and Villa could take advantage by swooping for Anguissa in the coming weeks whilst his head is potentially turned.

Lange must bring him in as he could be a player Dean Smith would love to work with.

The Fulham beast averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.99 in the Premier League last term despite their relegation. He made 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst also completing an 2.7 dribbles and 0.8 key passes per match. This suggests that he has the quality to compete as a box-to-box midfielder, rather than specialising either defensively or offensively.

Joachim Andersen, who recently joined Crystal Palace, lauded Anguissa as a machine. He said of the Cameroonian: "He's a top player. He's a machine in the midfield. He's winning so many balls and driving forward with it."

The enforcer's national team coach, Toni Conceicao, said of him: "He's a quality player. In football, the collective is the most important, so you have to have players that work for the team. And although Anguissa is not a Messi or Ronaldo, he's a player that has a lot of capacity to influence the match. He brings a lot of tactical culture and rigour to the team.

"He has got a really good passing ability, long and short, and is one of those players that makes the team tick without necessarily being the standout. As a coach and with all due respect to Fulham, which I know is a great club, Anguissa can reach an even higher level."

This suggests that Smith would adore the £70k-per-week machine, as he is capable of making an impact at both ends of the pitch and has quality on the ball in transition.

He would also come in as a known quantity, given that he played in the Premier League for Fulham last season. This means that he may not need the adaptation period players coming in from abroad sometimes need.

Harry Wilson pinpoints moment he knew he had to leave Liverpool

Liverpool sold Harry Wilson this summer to Fulham, bringing an end to a 16-year spell for the Welsh winger on Merseyside.

The Reds managed to get a cool £12m for Wilson from the Cottagers, who splashed out to bring in a player who is proven at Championship level.

Wilson's spells with Derby, Bournemouth (in the Premier League) and Cardiff, all showed what he was capable of. But despite his impressive form for those teams, he never quite made the jump to Liverpool's first XI.

And Wilson believes he knew the exact moment that he needed to leave.

Wilson pinpoints time to leave Liverpool
Speaking in an interview for Goal, Wilson believes that his chance had come at Liverpool back in the summer of 2019.

"It was in 2019, when I came back from Derby. That pre-season at Liverpool, we played a few games in England and then went out to America and France. I played pretty much every game, scored a few goals and felt like I was in a good position," Wilson said.

"Then we played Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley and I was 19th man. The disappointment of that really hit me.  I felt that was my chance, and it had gone. I thought I'd done all I could, and I think that was when I started to accept that I'd have to leave."

Wilson scored on his opening appearance for Fulham this weekend.

Time for Wilson to shine
The £12m deal this summer was good business all around. Fulham got themselves a fine player, while Liverpool got a good fee for someone who'd never really challenged the first-team.

But the time is now for Wilson to really show his worth. He'll have an element of wanting to prove himself to those at Liverpool.

That, of course, will benefit Fulham, who have already seen initial signs of what he'll bring to the table.

Anguissa wants to leave Fulham

Andre Frank Anguissa was left out of Fulham's opening Championship fixture against Middlesbrough yesterday because he wants to leave the club, according to a report from the Athletic's Peter Rutzler.

The Cameroonian midfielder told Marco Silva of his desire to leave Craven Cottage on Friday and the Fulham head coach decided to omit the 25 year-old out of his matchday squad. Silva has been clear that he only wants to use players who are fully committed to Fulham's aim of returning to the top flight at the first attempt and Anguissa made clear that he does not wish to play in the Championship.

He had previously been loaned to Villarreal when Fulham were relegated from the Premier League and, despite playing in the final pre-season friendly against Charlton Athletic last month, now looks set to exit before the end of the summer transfer window. Fulham rejected a loan offer from Valenica last week – largely because the Spanish side were not willing to pay a loan fee for Anguissa's services – and reports from the Italian press have suggested that Roma are monitoring the midfielder closely. The Londoners are rumoured to holding out for an offer that meets their £21m valuation.

Australian midfielder Tyrese Francois made his first league start in Anguissa's absence, playing more than seventy minutes in central midfield as Silva's side started their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough.
