VAR changes - the end of the armpit offside debacle

In the light of the excellent officiating in Euro 2020, the EPL have instigated "common sense" to the application of VAR and some refereeing decisions.

No longer shall we deliberate over two lines which are virtually together only for the VAR ref to determine the attacker's left toenail was offside. This gives to the view that many TV pundits commented on, how in Europe they could get the correct decision right so quickly and smoothly which allowed the tournament to entertain a public that had suffered the pandemic and a year in lockdown. UEFA wanted to cheer us up (if only Southgate had read the plot too), and the TV analysts did a fairly unfavourable comparison to how we slowly come to make decisions while the fans wait in silence.

There are still the subjective calls such as a player going down over the slightest touch, whether that contact was enough to bring him down. What wasn't mentioned as a factor was, what club did the protagonist play for which I believe will still be the most determinating factor, a Chelsea player like Timo Warner is still far more likely to get a dubious spot kick than a Brentford one in exactly the same circumstances.

But the EPL are at least talking a good game, while there's no change in the Football League and we will still have to suffer cretinous toerags like Keith Stroud and his ilk.

Watching the Brentford-Arsenal match one saw the EPL implementing their new policy of common sense refereeing and use of VAR, unlike the Football League. In this match the Brentford forward was allowed to slightly impede the goalie and no foul was given. In the video on Sky they talked about it being a physical game and they wanted to embrace it.  It is after all, a man's game.

The last few seasons, Women's football had become more physical, such is how we coddled the divers and cheats in the men's game.

Look how the worst ref outside the EPL Keith Stroud gave 'Boro dives and soft free kicks. Recall Isaiah Jones throwing himself to the ground against Tete but Tete had moved 5 yards away, then when Tete moved close he threw himself down again and was given a foul! Stroud should have booked Isaiah for the first dive which he could clearly see the player deliberately dived which is unsporting behaviour in the referee's manual. But Stroud is the worst ref outside the EPL, perhaps even including them.

Fulham are unfortunate to be lumbered with a broken system of officiating, poorly chaired by Rick Parry and we have no VAR even in the Championship. But hats off to the EPL who are carrying the fine example of the reffing and VAR used in Euro 2020.

Agree 100%. Stroud is useless and that's being polite.  However I guarantee that had it been Mitro impeding the keeper that goal would have been disallowed.

I hardly think the goalie was slightly impeded for
B's second goal. He had him in an arm lock which made it impossible for him to jump for the,relatively low, cross. Not much complaining from the Arse though.
