Former Fulham player makes admission involving Aleksandar Mitrovic

Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Crossley has told This is Futbol that he thinks Aleksandar Mitrovic can fire the Whites back to the Premier League this season.

The Serbian international has started the current campaign in fine form and already has four goals and two assists to his name in the league after five games so far.

Mitrovic last played in the Sky Bet Championship for the West London side back in the 2019/20 campaign and netted 26 goals in 41 league outings as Scott Parker's men got back into the top flight.

Now Crossley has stated his belief that the striker could well provide the difference again as he said the following:

I can see him winning the Golden Boot. He'll be up there.

"The thing with him is you need to keep him interested. If your team is at the top of the league, he's going to be interested anyway. The main thing is keeping him fit because he is the best striker in the league.

"He could get Fulham promoted single-handedly."

The Serbian marksman has been Fulham's undoubted talisman for the best part of five seasons now and will be looking to add to his goal tally once he returns from international duty.

Mitrovic recently committed his long term future to the club by signing  a new contract which ties him to Craven Cottage until the summer of 2026.

The Verdict

It's hard to disagree with Crossley's comments on Mitrovic and his goals will certainly give Fulham a great chance of heading back to the top flight at the first attempt.

He seems to thrive at this level and is by far and away the most complete striker in the entire Football League.

The real bonus for Fulham is that he doesn't look like he will be going anywhere anytime soon after signing a new contract recently and the hope will be that he can continue in this current vein of form.

Marco Silva has rightly built his team around the Serb and the pressure will now be on his teammates to continue to present him with the best chances to score regularly.

Mitrovic fit to face Ireland

Aleksandar Mitrovic will be fit to face the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night despite suffering a cheekbone injury in the 4-1 win over Luxembourg yesterday afternoon.

The Fulham striker scored twice in Belgrade to send Serbia top of Group A, but there was alarm as he was substituted with seven minutes to go with a nasty under his eye. Serbian coach Dragan Stojkovi? suggested that he might be a doubt for the trip to Dublin after the game on Saturday, but the Serbian camp have confirmed that Mitrovic will be able to lead the line against Stephen Kenny's side.

Mitrovic, whose brace against Luxembourg took him to 43 goals from 65 international caps, should also be able to return for Fulham's Championship fixture against Blackpool next weekend as well.

Fulham: Jean-Michael Seri stole the show in August

Things could hardly have got off to a better start for Marco Silva at Fulham, with the 44-year-old manager securing a number of impressive arrivals at Craven Cottage in the summer transfer window, as well as seeing his side top the Championship table going into the international break.

Regarding the Cottagers' summer transfer business, Silva sealed the signings of Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz, Paulo Gazzaniga, Nathaniel Chalobah and Domingos Quina, all of whom represent either an upgrade on a player the Portuguese manager previously had in a position or simply adding further depth to a particular area of his team.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Fulham have dropped just two points over their opening five games of the Championship season – as well as scoring a league-high 12 goals and conceding a joint league-low three goals – results that have left the club at the top of the second-tier standings.

As such, it is perhaps to be expected that a number of Fulham's players have performed well this season, however, rather than any of the new signings topping the club's performance charts – such as Harry Wilson, who has highly impressed since joining the club – it is actually a player who looked as if he could have been on his way out of west London this summer who has impressed most for the club thus far – Jean-Michael Seri.

Forget Wilson

As previously mentioned, Wilson has far from disappointed since making the move from Liverpool to Fulham this summer, with the winger scoring two goals, registering one assist and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.43 over his three Championship appearances for the Cottagers, however, the level of Seri's performances for Fulham has perhaps been the most surprising factor of the club's campaign so far.

Indeed, over his four Championship fixtures this term, the 30-year-old has made an average of 1.3 interceptions, 2.8 tackles, 0.8 clearances and won 5.5 duels per game.

The £3.6m-rated man has also impressed in a creative capacity, registering one assist, as well as making an average of 62.3 passes, 86.5 touches of the ball and 2.3 key passes per league appearance.

These returns have seen the player Xavi dubbed a "fantastic" talent earn a rather remarkable average SofaScore match rating of 7.60, not only ranking him as Silva's best performer in the second tier but also as the third-best player in the entirety of the division.

As such, while the Ivory Coast international may not have quite lived up to his £27m transfer fee just yet, the central midfielder certainly looks as if he could go on to play a starring role in Fulham's push for promotion this season, something that may not have appeared all that likely to the Craven Cottage faithful just a matter of weeks ago.

Exclusive: Ex-Fulham man insists there will be PL interest in teenager

Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Crossley insists that teenager Fabio Carvalho will be attracting interest from Premier League clubs after such an excellent start to the season.

The 19-year-old has worked his way into the first-team under manager Marco Silva at the start of the season.

Carvalho has played in five games in the Championship and has scored three goals, against Huddersfield Town, Millwall, and Hull City, while also registering an assist.

The England U18 international has a contract with Fulham until 2022, meaning that he could well have his pick of a number of clubs next summer.

West Ham United, Leeds United, Norwich City and Porto are all said to be keeping a close eye on his situation at the club, per The Daily Mail.

And Crossley believes that a number of Premier League clubs will want to bring the teenager in, and has urged Fulham to stay near the top of the table in a bid to ensure he stays.

Fulham are currently top of the Championship, having taken 13 points from their opening five games.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, Crossley said: "If Marco Silva's picking him, and he's playing regularly, such a young lad... I haven't seen too much of him but what I have seen, Fulham have to stay at the top of the league because Premier League clubs are going to be all over him at this moment in time."

Christie called into Ireland squad

Fulham full back Cyrus Christie has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Tuesday after Seamus Coleman withdrew through injury.

The Everton defender picked up a knock during yesterday's 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan. Christie has been called up as cover and will join up with Stephen Kenny's squad tomorrow ahead of their crucial game against the Serbians. Ireland only have picked up just one point from their first four matches in a disastrous start to their Group A campaign – which makes the midweek clash a must-win.

Christie has yet to feature under Marco Silva at Fulham this season and was made available for transfer at the end of the transfer window. The former Middlesbrough defender turned down a return to Nottingham Forest, where he had spent last season on loan, after failing to agree personal terms and a potential switch to Bologna fell through on deadline day.

Southend United ready to take on Fulham in Premier League Cup

SOUTHEND United's under 23 side face their first ever group game in the Premier League Cup tonight.

The Shrimpers beat Stevenage on penalties to reach the group stages of the competition.

And Blues' joint under 23 team coach Danny Heath now wants his young players to make the most of this evening's clash with Fulham at Roots Hall.

"We spoke to the boys in the week and we trained on Sunday morning as part of preparation for the game," said Heath.

"We said they're the first set of Southend players to qualify for this stage of the competition.

"But now it's about showing the gaffer their potential and ability to step into the first team long term or if called upon anytime soon.

"That's first and foremost but along with that we want to win the games and qualify for the knock out stages if we can."

Blues will also take on Stoke City and local rivals Colchester United in the competition.

And Heath feels all of the matches will be a stern test for the Shrimpers.

"You've got cat one teams in Fulham and Stoke and cat two in Colchester so all three are tough opposition," said Heath.

"But if our boys can perform to the best of their abilities then they can beat anyone on their day."

And Heath that will be the case this evening as his Blues side line up under the lights at Roots Hall.

"That adds to the experience to the players but it's about performing under a bit of pressure," said Heath.

"Hopefully we will get a few fans in to support the lads and that will add to the pressure a little bit but ultimately that's what football is about."

And Heath, the club's under 18 coach, is also relishing his part in proceedings after taking joint charge of the older age group this term.

"Mark Moss and myself work really well together," said Heath.

"There's a good balance between us and we're both enjoying the step up and the challenge of working with the 23s and the pro's on a more day to day basis.

Mitrovic arrives in Dublin with 'great self-confidence'

Aleksandar Mitrovic scores Serbia's first goal against Luxembourg. Picture by Novak Djurovic/Reuters

Serbia had one very important piece of baggage with them when their flight from Belgrade landed in Dublin last night ahead of tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against a struggling Republic of Ireland side.

The fact that Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic checked out of a Belgrade hospital and joined his team-mates for their trip to Ireland, despite carrying what looked like a nasty facial injury from Saturday's 4-1 win at home to Luxembourg, was just another piece of good news for manager Dragan Stojkovic as he prepares for his first test in Dublin, as a player or manager.

Close-up photos of Mitrovic showed a man who had been in the wars – an injury to his cheekbone, his manager confirmed – and who looked more in need of a stay in hospital than a flight to Ireland, yet Mitrovic is on a roll goal-wise, so nothing would stop him from turning up.

He will be assessed again today by their medical staff, but the 26-year-old is enjoying his status as the top scorer in the overall European World Cup qualifiers (seven goals) and is desperate to play tomorrow – good form for a player who couldn't get into a poor Fulham side last season.

"Two goals are a reward for his fighting spirit, his enthusiasm. He has great self-confidence now," says Stojkovic, who compared the Fulham man to his own contemporary Darko Pancev, who helped their Red Star Belgrade side to a European Cup win in 1991.

Serbian football seems to be permanently just 90 minutes away from a crisis, in their club scene or the national team, and failure to qualify for Euro 2020 still stings. But since Stojkovic took charge, it's been mainly plain sailing and bar a summer loss to Japan in a friendly, when they fielded a weakened side mainly made up of home-based players, they are unbeaten since that shock loss to Scotland in a Euro 2020 play-off.

Mitrovic comes to Dublin with the sort of form that Irish strikers can only envy, having scored six goals in his last seven games for club and country, two strikes in Belgrade on Saturday helping to put Luxembourg to the sword.

His strike rate – 14 shots on target, seven goals – is worrying for Ireland, but Serbia are not a one-man side, and it's the creativity of Dusan Tadic in midfield (joint top in Europe for assists in the qualifiers) which has made those goals food and drink for Mitrovic.

Their recent form, and their overall record against Ireland, breeds confidence for the visitors, but they have done their homework and seen some things to be wary of, notably the first 88 minutes of Ireland's game in Portugal last week.

"I hope that we will be the first to score against Ireland, we must not allow them to lead for almost the entire game, as they did against Portugal. We all know what kind of players they have, we must not let ourselves down with our concentration," says Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, the sublime Lazio midfielder, who set up one of the goals against Luxembourg.

Tadic is enjoying the best spell of his career, at the age of 32, in the midfield of Ajax and the national team. His CV suggests he should have little to fear against Ireland: in his five games against Ireland at senior level, he's recorded three wins and two draws.

Yet, the ex-Southampton man admits to being wary. "The Irish will not be demoralised, they always fight. That is their mentality, they always bite at you," Tadic admitted, hoping to learn lessons from the win over Luxembourg where the scoreline of 4-1 may have flattered them. "When we got to 2-0, we thought it would be easy, but you can never win easily. We have to be 'killers'," Tadic added.

Rhys Porter: Fulham fan with cerebral palsy and epilepsy abused online now raising money for disability charity
Rhys Porter was sent vile abuse on TikTok after posting a video of him saving a penalty while playing for disability sports club Feltham Bees; "It made me feel quite sad, but I try and get over it and I try and make the positives come out of the situation"

Thirteen-year-old Fulham fan Rhys Porter is using his experience of being targeted with discrimination on social media to help raise money for a disability charity.

Rhys has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and plays for Feltham Bees football club - a disability sports club associated with Brentford.

He posted a video on the social media platform TikTok of him saving a goal which received hundreds of vile messages and comments of abuse.

Instead of letting it get to him, Rhys has decided to raise money for disability charity Scope by taking part in a goalkeeping challenge as part of their Make it Count campaign.

The initiative is running throughout the Paralympics, which finished on Sunday, and Rhys is challenging his whole family - from his Nan to his baby cousins - to join him in 20 minutes of physical activity every day.

He told Sky Sports News: "I made an account [on TikTok], it was called 'Rhys the Wall', I was going to post TikToks of me in goal and I posted about four or five and I posted a video of me where I made a save, and then it went viral and it had loads of horrible comments.

"It made me feel quite sad, but I try and get over it and I try and make the positives come out of the situation.

"I joined a disability charity and I'm doing 20 saves a day in line with the Paralympics and I'm trying to raise some awareness for disabled people.

"You can find the positives out of a situation if you look hard enough."

Rhys wants to raise awareness for disabled children to show they can do anything and also against online abuse, to prove that hate will never win. He has already raised over £5,000.

His mother Kelly Porter added: "There were a lot of hate comments, a lot of really nasty comments, people being opinionated saying things like: 'you can't play football you're disabled'.

"It was shattering to read, but at the same time, we know that life and reality can be quite harsh.

"We didn't feel the need to hide it from him but just to address it with him and try and move forward.

"Make It Count is about racking up as many saves as you want, it's about inclusivity and everybody being able to take part.

"We've got a Whatsapp group and Rhys is ordering everyone around getting them to send videos of their activities."

You can donate to Rhys' family challenge and find out more about Scope's Make It Count initiative.

Data Analysis: How Fulham have been the most dominant attacking side in the Championship

Fulham have been in top form since their 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough in first game week of the EFL Championship. Since then they have scored 12 goals in four matches and have moved to the top of the table.

They have one of the most threatening attacks of the league and have been scoring a lot of goals recently. They even managed to beat in-form Stoke City comfortably and scoring 3 goals in the process. Aleksandar Mitrovic has been actively involved in the goals that Fulham have scored. He has been involved in 6 of Fulham's 13 goals, after scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists. He is currently their top goal scorer.

Let's take a deeper look at what the stats have to say about Fulham's form.

Attempts on Goal

Fulham are second in the list for the number of attempts taken on goal. They are tied with West Bromwich Albion, who are also on the same points as Fulham on the table but Fulham are ahead on goal difference as they have scored more goals. Fulham have a total of 79 shots on goal in their five matches, which boils down to approximately 16 shots per match. Fulham also have a shot on target percentage of 40.5%, which means they have had 32 shots on target. Out of the 32 shots on target, they have scored 13 goals with a conversion rate of 40.6%.

Attacking Actions

Fulham have the highest success rate for the attacking actions they have attempted. They have a success rate 51.43% which means more than half of the attacking actions they have attempted have been successful. The attacking actions include shots, dribbles, crosses and passes that are attempted in order to attack the opposition's goal. Fulham have been able to record a high xG in all of their games because the attacking actions they attempt have a higher success rate than the other teams.

Accurate passes into final third

Fulham also have the highest success rate for accurate passes into the final third. The most important factor for a team is whether they are able to perform the right actions in the final third of the pitch where it matters the most. With a high success rate for passes into the final third, Fulham can maintain the pressure on their opponent's defence and can make the right move required to score a goal. Fulham maintain high pressure on the opposition which makes the defence weary and helps them convert the chances that they create.

Fulham have been more successful in scoring more goals because they have a player like Aleksandar Mitrovic up top, who possesses the physical strength to hold up the defence and provide the right pass to his teammates in the build-up towards a goal. He has the ability to win one on one aerial duels and this contributes towards the high accuracy rate of Fulham's passes into the final third.

Touches in Opposition Penalty Area

While Fulham have been leading in the other attacking charts, this is one of the most important stat which proves why they have been scoring a number of goals. Fulham have had the most number of touches in the opposition penalty area. This stat is a result of the high success rate of attacking actions as well as the high accuracy of passes into the final third that Fulham have maintained. More touches in the penalty area indicates that they are able to create more chances on goal.

Fulham are trying to play more direct football under the management of Marco Silva and it has paid its dividends. They have been the most successful side yet in the five matches they have played. Yes, it might be too early to reach a conclusion on how successful Fulham will be this season but if they continue playing the same type of football, they will certainly be a strong contender to gain promotion to the top division.
