Josh Bowler moved to Blackpool from Everton in the summer after helping Hull City win promotion from League One while on loan last season

Blackpool stunned early Championship leaders Fulham to register their first win of the season.

Former Fulham youngster Josh Bowler gave Blackpool a well-earned lead early in the second half as he drove into the visitors' box and finished well.

The Cottagers, who drop to second behind West Bromwich Albion following the Baggies' draw with Millwall, failed to find the rhythm that had seen them win all of their past five matches in league and cup.

The visitors had a number of chances towards the end as Denis Odoi and Harrison Reed went close, while Bowler had a chance to make the game safe at the other end.

Blackpool's first league win since victory in the League One play-off final moves them up to 19th in the table.

Fulham were without injured midfielders Fabio Carvalho and Harry Wilson and missed their creativity as the hosts had the best of the opening moments, with Keshi Anderson and Tyreece John-Jules both having efforts that worried them.

Ivan Cavaleiro - who replaced Wilson after he was injured with Wales - had a couple of half-chances, but Blackpool's press saw Fulham struggle to establish themselves in the opening period.

It got better after the break for the London side as Josh Onomah's low drive from distance went just wide, while Bowler made an excellent interception as Domingos Quina lined up to shoot after they had gone behind.

Neeskens Kebano and Reed came on midway through the second half for Fulham and increased their attacking impetus - Odoi had a header superbly tipped around the post by home keeper Chris Maxwell while Reed shot wide.

But Blackpool more than held out as they finally claimed a first Championship win this season at the sixth time of asking.

It was their first win in the second tier since 31 January 2015 when they beat Brighton 1-0 at Bloomfield Road before an 18-game winless run to end that season with relegation.

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"We knew we were going to have to play well against a very good team, but I thought we did. The longer you go without winning then the pressure builds, so it's nice to get that first win. If you'd have asked me before the game would I have expected it to have come today, maybe not.

"But this group of players surprise me as well sometimes, I know what this group is capable of and I don't think we've quite got what we've deserved in some of the other games.

"They've scored a lot of goals as well, so to keep a clean sheet against them was an outstanding effort, I thought our performance had everything - good football, a fantastic goal and then when we needed to defend under a bit of pressure at the end I thought we did it unbelievably well.

"If you can't take confidence from beating a team like Fulham then we're doing something wrong."

Fulham head coach Marco Silva told BBC Radio London:
"It's a disappointing result, a frustrating afternoon for us and for our fans as well. We wanted to give again a good result, if possible a good performance today, there were a good number of fans here to support our team, unfortunately we didn't give them that.

"We were not good enough this afternoon, it was not a good performance, from the first minute we didn't play with intensity, with pace, with the aggressiveness without the ball and with the ball that we must do and with not the quality that we've shown since the beginning of the season.

"It's a moment for us to analyse and show the players why this has happened and keep working hard to get a result in the next one."

Post-Blackpool Press Conference

Marco Silva was in a reflective mood as he spoke to the press after his first defeat as Fulham boss on Saturday.

"We didn't have a good enough performance from ourselves to win the game," said Silva. "If you look at the chances, the game was balanced, more control from ourselves as normal, but we didn't create enough chances and we didn't perform in the way we needed to in this football match, that is the truth.

"We will now analyse why those things happened, why we started the game slow, why our build-up was so slow this afternoon.

"We have to play faster with more intensity to create the chances. Three or four times in the first half we created the chances, but we have to be more consistent during the game and not make mistakes like we did this afternoon."

Talking about the winner on the day from Josh Bowler, Silva spoke honestly and frankly about where it went wrong and how he tried to make amends.

"It was our fault in that moment to concede that goal like we did," our boss explained. "Of course, in that moment we must react, and we didn't react in the way we wanted.

"After that we tried to change something from the bench, in the last 15 minutes we changed shape and formation to give a little bit more power.

"We had half chances in the second half but not clear chances to change the score for us."

The international break perhaps came at a tricky time for Fulham with a rampant run of form being halted, but Silva was quick to quash any queries this had something to do with the defeat.

"We won't make excuses, because if you want to have international players you know the schedule as well, and we have to go and challenge in the match," Silva stated.

"I'm not thinking about the international break. We must do more during the game, and it's not because of that (why we lost).

"Some players arrived midway through the week, some a little bit later, but that's part of the game. If I decided to play some of them it's because I felt they were ready."

There were a couple of notable absentees from the Fulham XI with both Fabio Carvalho and Harry Wilson not quite fit enough be involved, and our Portuguese boss gave an update on both their situations.

"Of course, they are very important players for us," he said. "It's different situations - Fabio because of his injury in the Hull City game, he did a big effort to play against Stoke but he felt it again the week after. We have to let him recover as much as possible, as fast as we can.

"Harry Wilson was because of his time with his national team, let's see. Let's hope he can play the next game."

New signing Rodrigo Muniz was sent on as a late substitute for his debut but the Whites were unable to find an equaliser.

Domingos Quina also made his debut for Fulham, who were the better side in the first half.

Denis Odoi and Harrison Reed went close for the visitors before the interval.

Fulham: Gazzaniga, Odoi (Muniz 79), Tosin, Ream, Robinson, Seri, Onomah (Reed 67), De Cordova-Reid, Quina (Kebano 67), Cavaleiro, Mitrovic.

Bowler brings flat Fulham back to earth

You can search for excuses for Fulham's first defeat of the season at Bloomfield Road. There was an international break that disrupted the momentum of an excellent August, a mini injury crisis and maybe there's something in the curse of the manager of the month award. But there's no escaping the harsh reality that battling Blackpool wanted it more. Neil Critchley's side hadn't won a league game since impressively winning the League One play-offs but they played at a faster tempo than their highly-fancied visitors from the outset and richly deserved all three points secured by the brilliant Josh Bowler, who snuck a shot between Paulo Gazzaniga and the near post, after being allowed to run into the Fulham penalty area under little pressure.

After that the Tangerines defended for their lives with the veteran Richard Keogh outstanding at the heart of a well-organised back four. It took far too long for Fulham to test the home rearguard in both halves and their only spell of prolonged pressure came once Rodrigo Muniz was summoned from the bench with ten minutes to go for his eagerly awaited debut. You couldn't fault the Brazilian's desire but he might have done better with two late headers and his deflected effort in stoppage time was gleefully snaffled by Chris Maxwell.

Fulham were far from the fluent side that had swept to stylish victories at Huddersfield and Millwall last month, shorn of the creativity of Harry Wilson and Fabio Carvalho. The Welsh winger missed out after coming off against Estonia with a head injury this week, whilst Fulham's teenage playmaker is understood to still be feeling the effects of a heavy challenge against Stoke City that injured his ankle. Marco Silva handed Domingos Quina a debut after his deadline day loan move from Watford, but the Portuguese midfielder's muddled performance only served to highlight what was missing. The closest he came to a moment of inspiration was when he scooped a chip over the crossbar in what proved to his final act of a frustrating afternoon.

Where Fulham were fitful and more than a yard off the pace, Blackpool's boldness was evident from the outset. Keshi Anderson posed particular problems in the early stages fizzing a cross-cum-shot across the face of goal and then, after seizing on a mistake from Josh Onomah, firing fractionally wide from 25 yards. Gazzaniga then had to dash out of his penalty area and tackle Tyreece John-Jules with his feet after the on-loan Arsenal striker had stripped Tim Ream of possession and the Argentine needed lengthy treatment to his right foot before he could continue.

Bowler, who spent two years in the Fulham academy set up as a youngster, was leading Antonee Robinson a merry dance down the Blackpool right. He played in Anderson with a lovely reverse ball only for the former Swindon winger to try and beat Gazzaniga from a tight angle rather than look for a cross and Denis Odoi then did brilliantly on the stretch to divert a teasing Bowler ball in out of danger. Fulham created only half chances in response, with Ivan Cavaleiro shooting wastefully wide after a swift early counter attack, and then drilling an effort straight at Maxwell after cutting in from the right. Jean-Michael Seri came closest to breaking the deadlock when his ambitious try from distance flew just wide, but going in behind would have been exceptionally harsh on the home side.

The pattern of the first period continued after the interval. Fulham looked lethargic and Bowler almost punished them inside two minutes of the restart but Gazzaniga gathered the winger's shot at his near post as space opened up. The visitors clearly didn't heed that warning. The right winger raced onto a poor pass from Seri and advanced into the box, with Tim Ream and Robinson slow to react, to fire home a fine solo goal, although Gazzaniga should have dealt with the sliding finish. The former Tottenham keeper was then nearly caught out by Jerry Yates from close to the halfway line as the home side's adrenaline levels surged.

Onomah whistled a long-range effort agonisingly past Maxwell's far post, but Blackpool were assured in defence and limited their visitors to few clear cut chances before Silva turned to Muniz in a desperate attempt to preserve Fulham's unbeaten record. Kevin Stewart wasted a free-kick in a promising position, before Bowler's commitment to the cause was underlined when he produced a brilliant bit of defending to deny Quina an equaliser at the back post. The Londoners belatedly laid siege to the Blackpool goal in the final ten minutes with Odoi and Muniz drawing good saves from Maxwell with headers and Harrison Reed volleying off target after the Serbian's clever knock down.

Muniz looked the likeliest to grab a late leveller, but a share of the spoils would have been distinctly undeserved. Blackpool toiled manfully to keep the division's most devastating attack alarmingly quiet, but this was far from a backs-to-the-wall effort. Critchley, a nurturer of significant young talent at Liverpool's academy before taking his first senior managerial post, sent his side out to exploit Fulham's propensity to play from the back and he got his tactics spot on. If Silva needed any reminding of how tough the English second tier is, this should serve as a wake-up call.

Silva: Fulham 'weren't good enough'

Marco Silva conceded Fulham didn't deserve anything from the trip to Blackpool as the Whites' unbeaten start to the season went up in smoke at Bloomfield Road.

Josh Bowler's fine individual strike early in the second half handed the home side their first league win of the campaign – and Blackpool were fully deserving of all three points. Silva told his post-match press conference:

"First, congratulations to Blackpool. We didn't have a good enough performance from ourselves to win the game. If you look at the chances, the game was balanced, more control from ourselves as normal, but we didn't create enough chances and we didn't perform in the way we needed to in this football match, that is the truth. "We won't make excuses, because if you want to have international players you know the schedule as well, and we have to go and challenge in the match. I'm not thinking about the international break. Reflections on Fulham's first defeat

Where to begin? Fulham's unbeaten record is no more after Marco Silva's side were humbled at the seaside today as Blackpool battled to their first league win of the season. The Tangerines thoroughly deserved their victory this afternoon – they were clearly the better side on the day and there was a worrying lack of intensity, flair and desire from a Fulham side who looked very flat after the international break.

After the euphoria of four straight wins, it is easy to forget that Fulham's Championship campaign actually began with an underwhelming draw against Middlesbrough when Silva's side appeared to take their foot on the pedal and allow their opponents back into a game that should have been beyond them. Fulham were similarly sloppy this afternoon – giving the ball away carelessly and seemingly surprised by the unrelenting nature of Blackpool's high press and their energy both in and out of possession.

Silva has spoken throughout his time in charge about the need to maintain the high standards he has set for his squad. They certainly slipped this afternoon – and this defeat should serve as a timely reminder that nothing is won in the early weeks of the season. It may be too early to offer a take on this Fulham squad, but we are looking more and more like vintage Fulham.

Silva has made this team more alive than in the any of the past three seasons. The new manager is hungry to prove that he can still crack English football and he has certainly made life down by the River Thames enjoyable again. There can be no doubt about the fact that he has been the driver of the club's transfer strategy, having brought in several signings over the course of the summer. The acquisitions of Wilson and Gazzaniga came quickly after Silva's appointment and he was the pivotal factor in the purchase of Rodrigo Muniz. Similarly, he has held a longstanding interest in Nathaniel Chalobah since his time at Watford. Perhaps the only thing he didn't get in the transfer window was a new right back after Kenny Tete's injury. I might be one of the few Fulham fans who considers such a signing a priority as I sadly believe that Denis Odoi is well past his peak as a full back.

Gazzaniga hasn't had much to do in the games I've seen this season but he doesn't look too confident when the crosses come in. You'd have to think that Championship clubs will test him out under the high ball the longer the season goes on. The Argentine will be disappointed to have let Josh Bowler's winner go through him at the near post this afternoon – and you can make an argument for him probably needing to do better for several of the goals Fulham have conceded this season. I would have liked to have seen Marek Rodak return between the sticks, especially after how impressively he performed the last time we were at this level, but either keeper is fine for me.

The surprise central midfield combination of Jean-Michael Seri and Josh Onomah has been one of the most unremarked parts of Silva's summer evolution. Today was probably the first game where that partnership didn't really do enough. Onomah came close with a couple of shots, but Seri gave the ball away in dangerous area far too regularly – one of which led to the Blackpool winner. You can't question Seri's commitment to date and, even if I might still quibble about certain technical elements of Onomah's game, it would be churlish to deny that he's had an impressive start to the season.

Blackpool handled Mitrovic well today, isolating him from his team-mates for much of the contest, but I would suggest that was easier in the absence of Carvalho and Wilson. Muniz looks like a good addition to the side – he linked up well with Mitrovic in his cameo today – and created more in ten minutes than the team had managed in the previous eighty. I feel like Wilson will be a regular source of goals and assists, as will the lively Bobby Decordova-Reid.

We shouldn't get too down about a defeat to an unfancied side. Such is the unpredictability of the Championship – I'm sure there will be more of these results before the season is out. The Whites are still well placed after the first four weeks of the season and, mostly importantly, Silva has brought the enjoyment back to watching Fulham. Improvements will be necessary and he will demand them. I can't wait to get back to watching the Whites at Craven Cottage.

Tired Legs and New Faces

Well that was a bit poor, wasn't it? Our unbeaten start to 2021/22 has come to an end, with Blackpool getting the better of us at Bloomfield Road. And in truth, they were well worth the win. They were organised, gave us very little time on the ball and arguably could have had another one or two as we were sloppy at the back. For all of the free-flowing football we have witnessed under Marco Silva this season, we have come back to earth with a bang thanks to a disjointed display.

Our start to this season has been the best in years. Top of the league and scoring goals, Fulham have been a pleasure to watch. But today we looked leggy and that will be down to a couple of things. Firstly, Silva demands a lot from his players. We press high up the pitch and we move the ball quickly when we have it. This isn't the passive, slow football that the players perhaps had gotten used to under Parker. While this has been a breath of fresh air, it could also come at a cost. This is where the recovery of players is so important. Secondly, we have come off the back of an international break were a lot of our best players have been travelling the world playing up to three matches. Blackpool only have a handful of players in this situation so while we have the better quality in the squad, having two weeks on the training pitch will of course play in their favour more than our own.

For me today I thought that we should have had far more rotation in the starting line-up because of the international break. I thought Ream, Robinson and Mitrovic in particular today looked shattered and Blackpool absolutely took advantage of that. Considering Ream and Robinson got back so late from the USA duty, why not use Mawson and Bryan today? I absolutely love that the Championship has so many games, but we are now in a situation were we have another game midweek. In the Championship you absolutely have to rotate and I think Silva will need to learn this quickly.

We did however get to see a couple of our new boys in action today. Domingos Quina made his debut in for the injured Fabio Carvalho and we finally got to see Rodrigo Muniz in action albeit just for the last 10 minutes or so. Quina's debut was a mixed bag. I thought he showed some lovely touches on the ball and can spin his man, but sometimes tried to be too fancy with flicks. What I saw today was a player who clearly has ability but maybe needs his teammates to get used to his game. We had a couple of occasions were he just didn't look to be on the same wavelength as the players around him but I think that will come with time.

As for Muniz, I thought he looked a threat. He looks to get into the right places and clearly has the pace that Mitro lacks. It's hard to judge based on a cameo appearance, but I reckon he is one to be excited about. Given that I feel that we should have rotated more today, I'd like to see him start on Wednesday night against Birmingham. Let's see what he can do from the start.

It was a poor display today, but it was oh-so-Championship. We already knew we were in the world's most unpredictable league, so let's not have a meltdown. On to Wednesday night.

Fulham U18s beaten by West Brom

A first half brace from Reyes Cleary saw West Brom end Fulham's under 18s unbeaten start to the season on Saturday afternoon.

The impressive Baggies striker put the hosts in front after just five minutes, advancing into the penalty area and firing clinically past Alfie McNally into the bottom corner. Michael Olakigbe came close to an equaliser for the visitors but didn't get a clean connection having been found by Charlie Robinson – and his shot flew over the bar. The hosts went straight down the other end and doubled their lead with Clearly converted a free kick from the edge of the box after Robinson had been suckered into committing a foul.

Cleary could have had a hat-trick before half time but he headed a good chance over the crossbar and, although Fulham finished the first period on the front foot they couldn't find a way back into the contest. Robinson looped a header over from a corner. Steve Wigley's side kept pressing well into the second half but the Baggies held for their first victory of the season after Ronnie Hollingshead pulled off three fine saves to deny Delano McCoy-Splatt, Imani Lanquendoc and George Okkas.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION UNDER 18s (5-3-2): Hollingshead; Hall, Humphries, Chidi, Machisa; Higgins (Richards 64), Heard, Lamb; Love, Cleary (Okoka 50). Subs (not used): Oliver, Hudd, Hurlock, Tobi.

'Worst player in this Fulham squad' – Plenty of Fulham fans rip into 'awful' player after Blackpool defeat

Fulham lost 1-0 away at Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham travelled to the Seaside to face a Blackpool side who'd struggled upon their return to the second-tier.

Neil Critchley's side hadn't won any of their opening five Championship fixtures, compared to Marco Silva's Fulham who hadn't lost, and who went into yesterday's fixture in 1st-place of the table.

But a second-half goal from Josh Bowler – his first in the Championship since joining in the summer – secured a surprise win for the home side which took their points tally to five for the season.

Fulham meanwhile drop into 2nd after West Brom's point v Millwall.

It was a torrid display from the Whites today and one man stood out in particular – Dennis Odoi.

The Belgian full-back has been with the club since 2016 but has often split opinion, and in what was only his second league outing under Silva yesterday he failed to impress.

Blackburn Rovers pulled out of move to sign Josh Maja, report claims

Blackburn Rovers 'pulled the plug' on a loan move for Bordeaux striker Josh Maja last month, reports Alan Nixon.

Maja, 22, spent last season on loan with Fulham in the Premier League.

The former Sunderland youngster joined the French outfit midway through the 2018/19 season but has seen himself fall down the pecking order since.

He was loaned out to Fulham midway through the last campaign and he managed to score three goals in 15 Premier League appearances for the relegated side.

Now though, Nixon has revealed in The Sun on Sunday (12.09.21, pg. 64) that Blackburn Rovers were on course to bring him to Ewood Park on loan, before deciding against it at the last minute due to injury.

Maja is currently sidelined with a back injury and is yet to play a part in Bordeaux's Ligue 1 campaign this season.

Rovers lost star man Adam Armstrong in the summer. He joined Southampton and last weekend (Sun on Sunday, 05.09), Nixon claimed that Tony Mowbray's tenure at Ewood Park was hanging in the balance after failing to bring in a replacement striker.

His side have since scored nine goals in their opening six Championship games this season, drawing 2-2 at home to Luton Town yesterday to place them in 9th.

Maja would've been a quality addition to this current Blackburn Rovers side and a move could well be reignited next January, with Nixon again going on to mention how the Englishman wants a return to England in the next transfer window.

Silva offers thoughts on Fulham's defeat at Blackpool + fitness updates on Carvalho/Wilson

Fulham boss Marco Silva has rued his side's performance in the 1-0 defeat at Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham tasted defeat for the first time under Silva away at Blackpool on Saturday.

His side fell to a 1-0 defeat after Josh Bowler's second-half goal for Blackpool gave them their first Championship win of the season.

It saw Fulham knocked off the top-spot after their previously unbeaten start to life under Silva, who's berated his side's lack of creativity in yesterday's game.

Fulham scored 13 goals in their opening five Championship games prior to the defeat at Blackpool and would register 17 shots on goal against the Seasiders, but with only four of those hitting the target.

Silva told fulhamfc.com after the game:

"We didn't have a good enough performance from ourselves to win the game. If you look at the chances, the game was balanced, more control from ourselves as normal, but we didn't create enough chances and we didn't perform in the way we needed to in this football match, that is the truth.

"We will now analyse why those things happened, why we started the game slow, why our build-up was so slow this afternoon.

"We have to play faster with more intensity to create the chances. Three or four times in the first half we created the chances, but we have to be more consistent during the game and not make mistakes like we did this afternoon."

There was a debut for Domingos Quina yesterday, in the absence of both Fabio Carvalho and Harry Wilson.

Carvalho has been a standout performer for Fulham so far this term and was linked with Real Madrid earlier this week, whilst Wilson recently returned from international duty with Wales – both were left out of the defeat at Blackpool and Silva had this to say on their situations:

"It's different situations – Fabio because of his injury in the Hull City game, he did a big effort to play against Stoke but he felt it again the week after. We have to let him recover as much as possible, as fast as we can.

"Harry Wilson was because of his time with his national team, let's see. Let's hope he can play the next game."

Yesterday's defeat was something of a wake-up call for Fulham – there's a long season ahead and a lot of long and tricky away trips ahead for them too.

It's just one defeat though. Silva's Fulham next travel to Birmingham City in midweek and a win would put them back on track as they vie for an immediate return to the Premier League.
