Fulham dealt major injury blow ahead of Reading clash

Fulham have been dealt a blow regarding the fitness of Fabio Carvalho ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture.

What's the latest?

In a report published on the Fulham website, the Cottagers confirmed that the 19-year-old, who has missed the club's last two league fixtures due to a toe injury, will once again be unavailable for selection for the visit of Reading on Saturday afternoon, having not fully recovered from his knock.

Meanwhile, Harrison Reed is also a doubt for the fixture after picking up an injury in the 4-1 victory over Birmingham City on Wednesday, while Tom Cairney, Terence Kongolo and Anthony Knockaert all remain sidelined.

However, there is a return to first-team action for Josh Onomah, who has recovered from a slight knock picked up in Fulham's 1-0 loss to Blackpool last weekend.

Silva will be devastated

While Fulham did not exactly struggle for goals in the absence of Carvalho in mid-week, the fact that the attacking midfielder has still not recovered from what initially appeared to be a relatively small injury is sure to have left Marco Silva devastated.

Indeed, over his five Championship appearances this term, the £225k-rated teenager has been in remarkable form for the Cottagers, scoring three goals, registering one assist and creating two big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 2.4 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game.

These metrics have seen the man Silva dubbed a "fantastic" player average an extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.30, ranking him as Fulham's fifth-best player in the league.

As such, with what is sure to be a challenging fixture against a Reading side who are unbeaten in their last two fixtures coming up on Saturday afternoon for Fulham, the unavailability of Carvalho is certain to be a major blow for the Portuguese manager, who will once again have to make do without the teenage sensation.

READING MATCHDAY PREVIEW

The opposition

Veljko Paunović's side picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday, with a flurry of second half goals securing a 3-1 victory over strugglers Peterborough United. The Royals made a slow start to the campaign, winning one and losing four of their opening five league games. However, they head to the Cottage off the back of two decent results.
If you're wanting a game with goals, Reading are a side pretty likely to deliver. Despite sitting in 18th, they've scored the joint-third highest amount of goals with the likes of Bournemouth and West Brom (13). Defensively, though, they're topping a stat they don't want to be. With 17 goals conceded, Reading and Peterborough have picked the ball out their own net more than any other team in the division.
Reading midfielder John Swift is currently Championship top scorer, with an impressive seven goals to his name as well as three assists. He added one to his tally on Tuesday, putting his team ahead just after the hour mark. With a 70% goal conversion and shot accuracy rate, he'll definitely be one to watch at the weekend.

Fulham team news

Fabio Carvalho is not quite Reading ready and Harrison Reed is also a doubt after picking up an injury in the Midlands. Tom Cairney, Terence Kongolo and Anthony Knockaert also remain unavailable. Josh Onomah will return after his slight knock.

Reading team news

Captain Liam Moore is out after sustaining an injury against Peterborough. Midfielder Andy Rinomhota is out with an ankle injury and Chelsea loanee Danny Drinkwater is still to build up his match fitness. The same goes for ex-Palace centre-back Scott Dann. Yakou Meite will miss the majority of the season after rupturing his ACL.

Player insight

Harry Wilson, who bagged his third goal of the season in midweek, was pleased with how the side reacted after their Blackpool defeat.

"I thought the response was top and we were at it on Wednesday. They had a couple of half chances but we kept them quiet and dealt with the threat really well."

The Welsh international is expecting a real test on Saturday against The Royals.

"Whenever I face Reading, I always think they're going to be a good footballing team. They've got players that like to get on the ball and interchange positions. We all know it'll be a tough game."

Predicted Fulham XI to face Reading – midfielder remains doubtful with 3 ruled out
Fulham host Reading in the Championship this afternoon.

Marco Silva's Fulham side go into today's bout of Championship fixtures top of the pile after their 4-1 demolition of Birmingham City in midweek.

The Whites today welcome Reading who sit in 18th-place of the table after a mixed start to the season, but they go into this one unbeaten in two after a 3-3 draw v QPR and a 3-1 win over Peterborough United.

Veljko Paunovic's side can definitely score goals but so too can Fulham, and Silva looks to have a near full strength side bar one or two injuries in midfield.

Fabio Carvalho (foot) remains a doubt for today's game but isn't a long term absentee, unlike both Terrence Kongolo (knee) and Tom Cairney (knee), with Kenny Tete's (hamstring) return date as yet unknown.

Predicted XI
Gazzaniga

Odoi

Adarabioyo

Ream

Robinson

Chalobah

Seri

Wilson

Reed

Cavaleiro

Mitrovic

Silva has great depth within his squad so expect him to utilise that ahead of what is a busy month for teams in the Championship.

Antonee Robinson looks to be his first-choice left-back and was rested v Birmingham City, so he could re-enter the starting line up.

Elsewhere, Ivan Cavaleiro could start in place of Bobby Decordova-Reid who's so far featured six times this season, claiming an impressive three assists in that time too.

Elsewhere, Nathaniel Chalobah impressed in what was his debut v Birmingham City alongside Jean Michael Seri in midfield, with Harrison Reed also making his first start since returning from injury.

A game that Fulham will be expecting to win today, but Reading can score goals and they could yet pull of an upset today.

Silva: No big difference between Bryan and Robinson

Fulham boss Marco Silva insists the competition between Joe Bryan and Antonee Robinson for the left-back spot is close.

Bryan got only his third outing of the season in the 4-1 away win at Birmingham on Wednesday, but his manager brushed aside any notion the 28-year-old was frustrated by a lack of game time.

Silva said: "I don't know why Joe has to be frustrated, or (Neeskens) Kebano has to be frustrated or Marek (Rodak), Alfie (Mawson) or any of the others.

"As a manager, I see things in a different way. You can't have just one player for each position if you want to get better every day.

"For Joe to grow he needs someone to push him, and for Jedi (Robinson) to grow you need someone who is able to compete as well.

"I don't see big, big differences between Joe and Jedi. And remember the away win at Millwall (where Bryan played) was one of our best performances of the season."

Silva says competition is healthy for Fulham

Marco Silva has reiterated that the squad strength at Fulham creates competition that can only boost the club's promotion hopes.

The Fulham head coach believes that the quality at his disposal will be vital in the latter stages of a gruelling Championship season. During his pre-match press conference ahead of Reading's visit to Craven Cottage, Silva downplayed any suggestion that Fulham's fringe players may be frustrated by a lack of playing time.

"I don't know why Joe [Bryan] has to be frustrated, or [Neeskens] Kebano has to be frustrated or Marek [Rodak], Alfie [Mawson] or any of the others. As a manager, I see things in a different way. You can't have just one player for each position if you want to get better every day.

Silva stated that he feels the battle between Bryan, who started in Wednesday's win over Birmingham, and American international Antonee Robinson for the starting left-back berth is pretty evenly matched.

"For Joe to grow he needs someone to push him, and for Jedi to grow you need someone who is able to compete as well. I don't see big, big differences between Joe and Jedi. And remember the away win at Millwall was one of our best performances of the season."

Leeds United Legend Makes Prediction About Whites Side To Face Fulham

Former Leeds United star Tony Dorigo has indicated that Marcelo Bielsa is more than likely to put out a second-string side against Fulham in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Leeds are still waiting for their first Premier League win this term, after they only managed a 1-1 draw against Newcastle at St. James' Park on Friday night.

The Whites suffered an injury blow ahead of the game when Jack Harrison was ruled out, while Raphinha picked up a hip problem during the game as well.

Leeds are struggling with several injuries at the moment and Dorigo conceded that he is expecting a very different looking team against Fulham in an EFL Cup third-round clash on Tuesday night.

He stressed that there is no way Bielsa can hope to put out a side close to resembling full-strength given all the problems in his squad at the moment due to injuries and suspensions.

Dorigo said on LUTV: "We might see a lot of players because I can't see how we can put out anywhere near a full-strength side.

"Simply because we don't have the numbers and also one or two are nursing injuries.

"It will be interesting to see what happens but needs must, the lads did great tonight and we got our point.

"I am sure whatever side goes out there on Tuesday will give it their all but I can't see the strongest of sides."

With Leeds off to a slow start to the season, Bielsa is likely to prioritise the game against West Ham next weekend over the EFL Cup game on Tuesday night.

Fulham boss Marco Silva opens up on Antonee Robinson, Joe Bryan battle for starting spot
Fulham boss Marco Silva has said not much is separating Antonee Robinson and Joe Bryan in the battle for the starting spot at left-back.

In the early stages of the season, 24-year-old Antonee Robinson has been edging out Joe Bryan in the battle to become Marco Silva's starting left-back.

Robinson had started every Championship game before the Cottagers' midweek with over Birmingham City, whereas Bryan's first start came against the Blues.

Now, insight on the battle between the duo for the starting spot has emerged from manager Silva.

As quoted by West London Sport, Silva has said the competition is benefitting both Robinson and Bryan.

He went on to add that while U.S. international Robinson has started for much of this season so far, there isn't much separating the two. Here's what he had to say:

"As a manager, I see things in a different way. You can't have just one player for each position if you want to get better every day.

"For Joe to grow he needs someone to push him, and for Jedi (Robinson) to grow you need someone who is able to compete as well.

"I don't see big, big differences between Joe and Jedi. And remember the away win at Millwall (where Bryan played) was one of our best performances of the season."

With the two jostling for the spot on the left-hand side of defence, it will be interesting to see who Silva deploys there as Fulham clash Reading on Saturday afternoon.

Royals test awaits
The Cottagers will be hoping to maintain their position at the top of the Championship table this afternoon, with Veljko Paunovic's Reading travelling to Craven Cottage.

The Royals currently sit in 18th place and will be looking to make a jump up the table off the back of their midweek victory over Peterborough United, which was only their second Championship win of the season.

It'll be a tough task for Reading against Fulham, but it will be interesting to see how the tie pans out.
