Post-Leeds Press Conference

Marco Silva was pleased with the application shown by his players in Tuesday's Carabao Cup meeting with Leeds United.

Fulham fielded an entirely different side to the weekend but matched our Premier League opponents all the way until penalties.

"I made 11 changes to our starting XI and I saw our team match our opponent this evening," Silva said. "I am really pleased, it shows the depth of our squad.

"It shows the competition I am always speaking to you that we have, and I can see every single day.

"If someone will not perform or go to sleep a little bit , they will be in trouble because the other one will be there.

"This is everything that I want, just in this way we can improve as a team and get stronger in the future.

"Of course, I am not happy with the result, like all of us, I think we deserved something more from the game.

"The result is what it is. I am proud of our players and what they did. Unfortunately, with the penalties they were more confident than us.

"I'm proud of what we did, our players. The way that we are working, the way we are doing, the way we will continue to keep working, the good moments will come for us."

Exclusive: Fulham confident of reaching Fabio Carvalho solution

Fulham remain confident of Fabio Carvalho signing a new contract with the club, Football League World has learned exclusively.

The midfielder has really made a name for himself in the early stages of this season and there is a considerable chance he will be a key part in their promotion bid in the Championship this year.

However, with this emergence in mind, he is attracting interest from elsewhere and with his contract currently running out at the end of this season, there are obvious thoughts that he could end up moving away from Craven Cottage for a minimal sum.

Football League World has been told, though, that the Cottagers remain confident that an agreement will eventually be reached between the player and the club, putting an end to the current speculation over his head.

Carvalho is the latest young player to come through the system at Fulham, with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Harvey Elliott previous examples of the fine work the club does at developing players.

Fulham will hope that they can keep Carvalho around a little longer as they did with Sessegnon rather than losing him so soon like they did with Elliott, who obviously moved to Liverpool.

Fulham 0-0 Leeds (5-6 on pens): Marcelo Bielsa reaches fourth round of Carabao Cup for the first time after much-needed nail-biting penalty shootout win

Leeds United beat Championship side Fulham on penalties on Tuesday evening
They went head-to-head in their Carabao Cup Third Round tie at Craven Cottage
Neither side were break able to break the deadlock in the game as it ended 0-0
However, it was Marcelo Bielsa's side that emerged victorious on penalties
Illan Meslier was the hero for Leeds, while Rodrigo Muniz was not for Fulham

Wins have been hard to come by for Leeds this season.

So one, even against Championship opposition with priorities elsewhere and on penalties, is not to be sniffed at.

Marcelo Bielsa named a strong side, perhaps an indication of Leeds' need for a result, and they eventually edged out Fulham though only after spot-kicks.

Illan Meslier was the hero for Leeds, whose only win in 90 minutes this season came in round two, earning them a place in round four by saving Rodrigo Muniz's sudden death penalty.

In a game of spurned chances from both sides and two misses apiece in their first five penalties, it felt almost inevitable that Muniz, one the biggest culprits in regulation time, was going to fluff his lines.

In a game of spurned chances from both sides and two misses apiece in their first five penalties, it felt almost inevitable that Muniz was going to fluff his lines

Kalvin Phillps's deployment at centre-back was one indication of Carabao Cup experimentation by Marcelo Bielsa and he endured an uncomfortable first half, though better second, away from his usual midfield role.

Muniz, on his full Fulham debut, escaped Phillips with his movement to head over and later test Meslier with a thumping drive.

In between the Fulham striker also got the better of Phillips to square for Domingos Quina whose shot was blocked.

After a misplaced pass and swapping sides, Phillips then gave away a free-kick which Neeskens Kebano hit, forcing Illan Meslier into a scrambling save.

Like his Fulham namesake, Leeds' Rodrigo Moreno had chances for the visitors but badly scuffed two presentable openings while Tyler Roberts was also denied by Marek Rodak.

Moreno's frustration continued in the second half when he took too long to get a shot off after being put through by Daniel James, allowing Michael Hector to rescue Fulham with a perfectly-timed last-ditch tackle.

Then it was Muniz's off target once more but only just with a header that grazed the top of the net before Josh Onomah extended Meslier from distance.

Meslier could only watch as Muniz climbed highest to reach Bobby Decordova-Reid's cross and was relieved to see the his header sail over.

Into injury time the two Rodrigo's both missed further chances at either end and Tosin Adaraibioyo flew in to block Junior Firpo before penalties were required to separate the sides.

Fulham lose on penalties to Leeds

Fulham 0 Leeds United 0
(Leeds won 6-5 on penalties)

Fulham were eliminated in a penalty shoot-out in the Carabao Cup third round at Craven Cottage.

A shadow Whites' line up had first half chances against Marcelo Bielsa's Premier League side when both Rodrigo Muniz and Josh Onomah had excellent shots saved by Illan Meslier.

Fulham winger Neeskens Kebano also drew a terrific stop out of the Leeds' keeper following his 18-yard free kick a minute before half time.

Muniz headed inches wide on two occasions and Meslier tipped an Onomah drive over in an otherwise drab second half.

The tie went to a tense penalty decider – but Muniz saw his effort saved by Meslier, with Onomah and Joe Bryan also missing the target as the Yorkshire outfit prevailed.

Fulham: Rodak, Bryan, Mawson, Hector, Christie, Onomah, Reed (Adarabioyo 82), Kebano, Quina (Decordova-Reid 70), Knockaert (Cavaleiro 70), Muniz.

Muniz misses as Fulham go out on penalties

Rodrigo Muniz missed the decisive spot-kick as Fulham went out out of the League Cup on penalties having held Premier League Leeds United to a creditable goalless draw after ninety minutes at Craven Cottage tonight.

The Brazilian striker saw his spot-kick saved by Illan Meslier as the home side were beaten 6-5 on penalties after an entertaining goalless draw. Josh Onomah struck the bar with Fulham's first penalty of the shoot out and Joe Bryan blazed over the bar but Marek Rodak saved from Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw ballooned his spot-kick before Meslier sprung to his left to deny Muniz and send the top flight side into round four.

Marco Silva had promised rotation after the defeat by Reading at the weekend and the Fulham boss was as good as his word but his side had a more experienced look about it than we might have had reason to expect. Barring Muniz, a goalscorer on his home debut on Saturday, and Domingos Quina this starting eleven had contained nine of the promotion winners from Scott Parker's first season in charge. Cyrus Christie came in from the cold at right back, Alfie Mawson donned the captain's armband and Anthony Knockaert and Neeskens Kebano were afforded a chance to impress out wide. Marcelo Bielsa fielded probably his strongest possible side, although Kalvin Phillips lined up alongside teenager Charlie Creswell at centre back.

Fulham began brightly and Muniz almost had another headed goal inside the first couple of minutes. Kebano delivered a deep cross to the back post where the Brazilian had crept in unattended, but this time his downward header bounced up and over the bar. The former Flamengo forward then played in Quina only for Creswell to produce a vital block in the nick of time before turning turning Phillips inside out after latching onto Joe Bryan's ball but Meslier pushed away the shot.

Leeds were adventurous as well. They should have gone in front from their first incisive attack when a poor ball from Josh Onomah fell to Crysencio Summerville and the Dutch midfielder drove deep into Fulham territory before feeding Tyler Roberts. The Welsh forward was forced wide and, although Rodak saved well from his shot, Rodrigo looked destined to score from the rebound but somehow contrived to miss an open goal. The visitors' sweeping diagonal balls were causing particular problems for the Fulham defence and, after a succession of corners, a Phillips attempt from the edge of the box was bravely blocked by Harrison Reed.

The Premier League side were now beginning to assert themselves on the contest. A glorious one-two between Klich and Rodrigo sent the Brazilian clean through on goal but he screwed the shot wide from twelve yards out. Fulham threatened briefly at the other end with a rasping Onomah drive initially escaping Meslier's grasp but the Leeds goalkeeper recovered to smother the ball before Muniz could reach the rebound. Leeds finished on the front foot with Roberts racing into the box after being released by a clever Stuart Dallas pass but Rodak made a smart save from the angle. The home goalkeeper reacted well to keep out a low Rodrigo free-kick that he would have saw late, before Kebano brought an even better save out of Meslier from a similar position at the other end just before the break.

The dangerous Dan James created the first opening of the second half with a surging run through the middle of the park, but Michael Hector's timely saving challenge thwarted Rodrigo just as he was about to strike for goal. Bielsa then sent on Adam Forshaw to fill the holding role at the base of the Leeds midfield. The second period was more attritional than what proceeded it with the home side's clearest chance coming when an enterprising run from centre half by Alfie Mawson located Kebano out wide and Muniz header over from the Congolese winger's cross. The 20 year-old, who looked lively on his first Fulham start, climbed highest to guide a header just over the bar from a Knockaert free kick.

Silva freshened up side by sending on Ivan Cavaleiro and Decordova-Reid in the last quarter and they almost took the lead with fifteen minutes to play. Onomah motored through the middle of the park and, with space opening up in front of him, went for goal from 30 yards and Meslier made a fine fingertip save. Fulham were forced into a late alteration after Reed felt his hamstring after clattering into the advertising hoardings as he tried to block a Leeds cross with Michael Hector moving into midfield after Tosin Adarabioyo came off the bench.

The home side looked the stronger in the closing stages. Muniz soared above Creswell to reach a Decordova-Reid cross six yards out but he couldn't keep the header down. Decordova-Reid than snatched a volley from the edge of the area after Forshaw had headed away a Fulham corner and the shot drifted harmlessly wide as penalties loomed. Hector drilled one optimistically wide from distance in the first minute of stoppage but Leeds, who had been hanging on, came closest to nicking a late winner when Creswell headed on a late free-kick but Rodrigo couldn't get a touch at the back post. In a thrilling finale, Muniz lashed over when found by a Cavaleiro cross and Adarabioyo brilliantly blocked Junior Firpo's drive at the last.

FULHAM (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Christie, Bryan, Hector, Mawson; Reed (Adarabioyo 83), Onomah, Knockaert (Cavaleiro 71), Kebano, Quina (Decordova-Reid 71), Muniz. Subs (not used): T. Ashby-Hammond, Fossey, O'Neill, Stansfield.

Fulham 0-0 Leeds (5-6 pens): Meslier denies the Cottagers

Leeds won 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out to come out on top in their Carabao Cup clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Neither side had been able to find a breakthrough in normal time, and after five penalties each there was still nothing to separate the sides with both successfully converting three apiece.

Teenager Stuart McKinstry scored for Leeds to make it 6-5, but Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz was unable to convert, leaving Leeds to progress.

It had been a close game, with both sides showing promise but lacking quality.

Fulham had started brightly and looked to make an impact when Muniz had two chances, a header just wide and a drive parried by goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

However, it was Leeds who should have been ahead when Tyler Roberts had a shot saved only for the rebound to fall to Rodrigo but he mistimed his effort.

Despite a promising start from the home side it was Leeds who continued to dominate possession as Fulham struggled to get out of their half.

Rodrigo made a promising individual run towards the Fulham box, including a clever one-two with Mateusz Klich, but his final shot did not have the same quality and was wide of the target.

Marek Rodak was forced into a low diving save to deny Rodrigo's low curled free-kick and keep the scores level.

Just before the half-time whistle, it was Meslier's turn as he kept out Neeskens Kebano's free-kick from just outside the area.

At the start of the second half, a sliding tackle from Michael Hector was needed to prevent Rodrigo scoring after he was played in by Dan James.

The second half lacked the energy of the first, with both sides short of quality in the final third as they tried to break the deadlock.

Fulham came close in the 68th minute when Muniz, who had had their best chances of the game, headed just over the crossbar from a well-struck cross.

Josh Onomah drove forward before unleashing a strike, but Meslier was able to tip the drive over the bar with just over 15 minutes remaining of normal time.

Muniz had another header in the 86th minute, which he was unable to keep down, with Leeds' Rodrigo also missing a headed opportunity at the other end in added time.

The game headed to penalties, with Onomah and Joe Bryan missing for Fulham and Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw unable to convert for Leeds.

At 3-3 after five penalties the game went to sudden death, with no mistakes for either team until Muniz' tame effort which saw Leeds go through.

Silva backs players after Fulham's cup exit

Marco Silva was unhappy after Fulham's exit from the Carabao Cup – but backed his players in their quest for promotion this season.

The Whites lost 6-5 on penalties to Leeds United at Craven Cottage in the third-round tie after a scoreless 90 minutes, with young striker Rodrigo Muniz seeing his spot kick saved by visiting keeper Illan Meslier.

"I'm not happy with the result, I felt we deserved something from the game," admitted Fulham head coach Silva, who changed his entire team from the weekend defeat by Reading.

"But I am proud of the players and what they did when I made 11 changes to the team. They (Leeds) were more confident with the penalties.

"The way we are working and how I know they are working I know the good things will come."

Despite the disappointment, Silva is convinced newcomer Muniz – a summer signing from Brazilian side Flamengo – and captain for the evening, Alfie Mawson, will be major contributors this season.

He said: "These are his (Muniz's) first moments with our squad and the way he fights I will keep working with him – he is improving every single day. He will have a big future.

"I was happy with him (Mawson) and he is pushing very hard for the team. Tonight, he and (Michael) Hector showed a very good level which does not surprise me.

"Alfie was fighting very hard and is pushing for the starting 11. Everyone wants to play for this shirt."
