Bristol City 1-1 Fulham

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his seventh goal of the season

Bristol City fought back to draw at home to Fulham in an entertaining match full of chances at Ashton Gate.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his seventh league goal of the season to give the visitors the lead just after half-time, having hit the crossbar seconds earlier.

But the home side were dangerous on the counter-attack and substitute Kasey Palmer equalised soon after being brought on.

Fulham had a trio of chances to get the winner late on but hit the bar twice, with Mitrovic also sending a shot narrowly wide.

As expected, Fulham had plenty of possession during the first half. But neither side were able to break the deadlock and were limited in their chances.

The best chance of the half fell to Fulham's Joshua Onomah, who was back-heeled the ball by Harry Wilson but saw his strike saved well by City keeper Dan Bentley.

Fulham came out firing after half time, and Mitrovic's volley quickly hit the bar after he was able to turn in the box.

Seconds later, the Serbian was in again, this time set up by Neeskens Kebano, who made a break down the left, before Wilson nodded the ball across goal for Mitrovic to head into the net.

Bristol City were seeking to end a streak at home without a win that stretches back to January of this year, and were constantly dangerous on the counter-attack.

Nakhi Wells - who mis-kicked a good chance from close range in the first half - headed over the bar from six yards out, before Nathan Baker sent a header over the crossbar.

But it was Palmer, who was brought on as a substitute not long before, who volleyed home on 79 minutes to give the Robins a deserved equaliser.

Fulham piled on the pressure in the closing minutes. Mitrovic sent to shots narrowly wide and City had to rely on the woodwork for denying the visitors the winner,

City are still yet to win at home under Nigel Pearson and their hunt will go to a 15th match, but his side are now unbeaten in their last five.

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson to BBC Radio Bristol:

"Very good opponents, pretty tight game in the first half. I think the second half shows that you can't open up too early against them.

"They have a lot of players that have got Premier League experience and I would expect them to be a tough opponent. I thought we played pretty well again.

"It's always about how the team defends. My expectations around the front two, or three or however we play, is to be the first very stubborn line of defence, so I expect them to work hard. Everybody is picked for a specific reason. I always know our defenders will be committed.

"Even George Tanner, getting his home debut, when you consider he was playing League Two a few weeks ago, and he's playing against players who were in the Premier League last year - not bad is it? So he's done all right."

Fulham manager Marco Silva:

"The goal was clearly offside. It wasn't a difficult decision and I can't understand why the linesman failed to spot it. I have seen a replay, but I knew at the time from the bench that it was offside. A poor decision has gone against us.

"I wasn't happy with our first-half display. But we made a couple of changes at the interval and the second half was much better. The substitutes made an impact, but the whole team played with more purpose. We just have to be calmer with our finishing.

"There were so many clear opportunities created, but we couldn't get the second goal to kill them off. We have to do better in that respect.

"We moved the ball well in the second half and could have had the game wrapped up before they scored."

Post-Bristol City Press Conference

Marco Silva was frustrated that his side couldn't find the cutting edge in the opposition box, as Fulham drew 1-1 with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

"The first thing we must do is score goals to win football matches," he said. "We need some luck with referee decisions because today it was key for the result."

"In the first half we were not at the pace and intensity that we should be playing football. We made a couple of changes and you saw the difference, we tried to attack and started creating chances.

"We were winning the game. In this moment, we created so many chances, we must score the second and third to kill the game, but and we didn't score.

"In the second half, we controlled the game, but they had moments on the counter-attack.

"It's important for us to be calmer and finalise the action – be more relaxed when making decisions and show more quality because we worked on ways to arrive in those positions. It's difficult, but something we'll keep working on to improve."

Silva credited the home team, as both teams threw everything at it in an attempt to grab the winner.

"I respect Bristol City," Silva continued. "They are a dangerous team.

"Unfortunately, we didn't score more goals and the linesman gave a goal to them that was not a normal goal.

"Ashton Gate has a good atmosphere, and it's fantastic for us to play in a good atmosphere. It's a good pitch and stadium to play football.

"We had to show our quality, nothing more."

Wasteful Fulham draw at Bristol City

Aleksander Mitrovic's seventh goal of the season wasn't enough to seal victory for Fulham as Kasey Palmer's equaliser earned Bristol City a share of the spoils at Ashton Gate.

The result sees Fulham fail to return to the top-two in the Championship table and leaves Marco Silva's much-fancied side with just one win from their last four games.

The Serbian striker, who hit the bar three times in the second half, scored from close range five minutes after the restart when he fired home after being teed up by Harry Wilson.

Wilson almost added a second for the visitors, latching on to a long ball forward, but he was unable to lift the ball over Dan Bentley and into the net as the Whites dominated the opening exchanges of the second period following a uneventful opening 45 minutes.

City, who have not won a home match since January, missed a great chance to equalise but Nahki Wells failed to convert with a header from close range as the Robins enjoyed their best spell of the match.

This eventually led to Palmer's strike 11 minutes from time after Paulo Gazzaniga had parried Chris Martin's shot and the former Chelsea midfielder, who had been introduced from the bench three minutes earlier, added the finish from a tight angle.

Fulham piled on the pressure in final five minutes with Mitrovic missing two glorious chances when he fired wide from inside the box before seeing his looping header bounce off the crossbar as the Robins held on for a point.

Fulham: Gazzaniga, Odoi, Tosin, Ream, Robinson, Seri, Onomah (Reed 45), Chalobah (Kebano 45), De Cordova-Reid (Cavaleiro 87), Wilson, Mitrovic.
Subs not used: Rodak, Mawson, Bryan.

Palmer pounces as Fulham fluff their lines

Substitute Kasey Palmer snaffled an equaliser as Fulham were held to a frustrating draw at Ashton Gate this afternoon – with Aleksandar Mitrovic opening the scoring but then missing three glorious chances in stoppage time as Marco Silva's side failed to get back to winning ways against Bristol City.

The game burst into life following Palmer's close range leveller after Paulo Gazzaniga had brilliantly denied former Fulham forward Chris Martin. The visitors pushed for a late winner and were denied by the woodwork when Jean-Michael Seri's shot deflected off Rob Atkinson and looped over Daniel Bentley. They then fashioned three further chances during three minutes of stoppage. All three fell the way of the Serbian striker – who was suddenly found wanting in front of goal.

American full-back Antonee Robinson was the architect of every opening. His first cross struck Harry Wilson and fell kindly for Mitrovic, but the hulking number nine's right-footed finish flew fractionally wide. There was more frustration seconds later when the Serbian striker superbly chested down another Robinson ball in to leave Tomas Kalas helpless but scuffed his shot wide of goal. With the final action of the match, Mitrovic clipped the top of the bar with a glancing header as Fulham were punished for their prolificacy in front of goal.

The mood was decidedly different amongst the travelling fans when Neeskens Kebano created the opener minutes after coming on as a half time substitute. Silva had clearly been underwhelmed by a flat first half display, where it took more than forty minutes for his side to work Bentley, and the Congolese winger beat his man at the first opportunity before delivering a dangerous cross that Wilson nodded back across goal for Mitrovic, who had rattled the bar with a venomous drive minutes earlier, to bury a straightforward header. The Fulham players went straight over to join Rhys Porter in their celebrations – a touching moment for the young goalkeeper with cerebral palsy, who was made a member of the club's first team squad this week in recognition of the wonderful way he has responded to awful social media abuse.

But Fulham failed to add to their advantage and – not for the first time this season – were unable to put their opponents to the sword. Kebano could have done it himself after being sent clear by Harrison Reed, another second half substitute but saw drove into the legs of Bentley when one-on-one. Wilson chipped the Bristol City goalkeeper but his finish dropped wide after he had latched onto a lovely through ball from Bobby Decordova-Reid and substitute Nathan Baker arrived in the nick of time to snuff out the danger as the Welsh winger looked set to fire home from another delicious Decordova-Reid pass.

City, without a win in fourteen home games before this fixture, clearly took confidence from the fact that they were still in the contest. They might have marginally shaded a first half full of endeavour but shot on quality with Tyreeq Bakinson drawing a good save from Gazzaniga. Nakhi Wells volleyed over a teasing cross from George Tanner and Nigel Pearson really went for it, switching to a back three and throwing on Palmer in search of a leveller. Baker might have provided one but he couldn't keep a header down after Fulham failed to clear a corner.

Substitute Joe Williams sliced wide from 20 yards shortly after coming on and Andi Weimman was pressed into service as a makeshift right back once Palmer arrived with fifteen minutes to play. The home fans whipped up a frenzied atmosphere and Fulham wilted as the Robins poured forward. Gazzaniga thwarted Wells with another fine reaction stop but the visitors failed to switch on from the ensuing corner. The Argentine goalkeeper somehow kept out a Martin drive, but the ball broke for Palmer, who slid in to level from an acute angle.

This draw – and the recent dispiriting defeats at the hands of Blackpool and Reading – suggest that teams have began to work out how to nullify Silva's side. Fulham look far less formidable without their teenage playmaker Fabio Carvalho, still troubled by a broken toe, but there was a lethargy about their approach play, which looked far more laboured than in August, again. City were content to sit deep in two banks of four and smother their opponents' pretty passing, which produced only one flowing first half move of note, when Josh Onomah rifled a drive into Bentley's gloves after a brilliant Wilson backheel.

Plenty of sides will plan to borrow from Pearson's playbook and some verve is desperately needed before Swansea visit Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Fulham Players Climb Into Crowd To Celebrate Goal With 13-Year Old Fan Rhys Porter

A video posted to social media shows the moment Fulham players climbed into the crowd to celebrate with fan Rhys Porter - who suffers from cerebral palsy and was recently subjected to online abuse.

The moment happened after Aleksander Mitrovic's goal, which handed the lead to the away side just after half-time.

Following the strike, a group of Fulham players went into the crowd and celebrated with young Porter, ruffling his hair and revealing in the moment.

The celebration was captured by a fan in the away end, who posted the heart-warming video to Twitter.

In a rare moment of unity between football fans, users from different fan bases came together to praise the players for giving the 13-year-old a moment he'll never forget.

Watch the video below.

Some fans were just as keen to call out his abusers as they were to praise the Fulham players.

Porter was made an honorary member of the Fulham squad last week after details of the online abuse were revealed.

Cottagers defender Tim Ream praised the youngster's resolve, telling the BBC: "People see footballers as role models and inspirations.

"For me, what he's doing is more of an inspiration than anything any of us could ever do."

While Fulham may have dropped points at Ashton Gate this weekend, Marco Silva's side are still just four points behind Championship leaders, AFC Bournemouth.

Swansea City's 'unsung' hero and the key to Huddersfield Town win as Russell Martin gives trio of injury updates for Fulham test

The Swans claimed their first home Championship win of the season thanks to Joel Piroe's first-half goal against Huddersfield Town

Russell Martin admitted Swansea City's improved intensity was key to their 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

The Swans took all three points thanks to Joel Piroe's first-half strike at the Swansea.com Stadium as Martin tasted his first home Championship success of the campaign.

Swansea controlled proceedings for long periods and restricted the Terriers to zero shots on target in south Wales, despite the fact their energy levels dropped as the second half wore on.

And 35-year-old head coach Martin says his side should have been out of sight after a fine first half showing in Swansea.

"It was more tense than it should have been second half. I think the first half was outstanding. Some of the play, the intensity we played at, the way we pressed, how many times we won the ball high up the pitch," he said.

"We played against a team that is excellent and are conditioned to play that way – their energy didn't drop and ours did a little bit. I think that's the biggest difference between the two teams.

"But we should score more goals in the first half and that makes the second half a lot easier. We've limited a really good team to no shots on target. The players have done that with desire and effort.

"We should have more control in the second half but that's coming. I have said to you all the way along - I am not blagging you or using it as an excuse, once we are conditioned to where we want to be – hopefully you will see the first-half performance for much longer periods."

Piroe's sixth goal of the campaign ultimately proved enough for the Swans as they stretched their unbeaten league run to four matches.

Flynn Downes was instrumental to his side's impressive defensive effort as the former Ipswich Town man played a significant role in ensuring the Swans kept their fifth clean sheet in nine Championship outings.

"He was incredible, it's really difficult to single people out but he does the dirty work really well which sometimes goes unsung," said Martin when asked about Downes.

"He enables people to do their roles brilliantly, he plays with no ego at all and knows exactly what his role in the team is and Kyle Naughton and the boys at the back appreciate him a lot - I know I would've if I'd had someone like Flynn playing in front of me.

"It's his willingness to learn, his attitude and attention to detail. He's playing a very different role to the one he played at his previous club as most of the guys are, but his willingness to learn, desire to win, his athleticism and improving technical ability is brilliant to see."

Swansea return to action against Fulham on Wednesday night.

They are set to welcome Rhys Williams and Ryan Bennett back to their squad for the game at Craven Cottage, although striker Michael Obafemi is expected to miss out due to a muscle injury.

"Ryan Bennett took a knock on Wednesday in a training group whilst we were away [at Brighton] which is frustrating and disappointing," said the head coach when asked about the absentees in the Huddersfield win.

"He'll be back very soon, I expect him to be back on Wednesday.

"Michael will take a little bit longer. He felt a muscle late on at Luton. We have to be careful because of his injury history and lack of pre-season, we have to take that a bit slower than we'd like.

"Hopefully he'll be fit for Derby, or if not, the derby [Cardiff].

"Rhys knows where we're at, we've had a lot of conversations. He trained brilliantly this morning. It's been a very tough time for him that can't be understated or underappreciated.

"We just felt it was maybe the time for him to have a break, reassess and watch the game with a different lens.

"We know he's going to be fantastic, but every game is different and every situation is different. He'll come back refreshed and ready."

Silva frustrated after Fulham drop points

Marco Silva slammed both Fulham's finishing and the officials after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City at Ashton Gate this afternoon.

The visitors created a succession of second half chances but were punished for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal when Kasey Palmer cancelled out Aleksandar Mitrovic's opener. The Fulham boss was furious that the goal stood – suggesting that the hosts' equaliser was clearly offside – but believed his team should still have done enough to return to winning ways.

He told his post-match press conference:

"The first thing we must do is score goals to win football matches. We need some luck with referee decisions because today it was key for the result.

"In the first half we were not at the pace and intensity that we should be playing football. We made a couple of changes and you saw the difference, we tried to attack and started creating chances.

"We were winning the game. In this moment, we created so many chances, we must score the second and third to kill the game, but and we didn't score. It's important for us to be calmer and finalise the action – be more relaxed when making decisions and show more quality because we worked on ways to arrive in those positions. It's difficult, but something we'll keep working on to improve.

"I respect Bristol City. They are a dangerous team. Unfortunately, we didn't score more goals and the linesman gave a goal to them that was not a normal goal. Unfortunately for us, it is one metre offside, a clear offside. It's difficult for me to understand because it's clear. Football is like that unfortunately."

Nigel Pearson responds to Marco Silva's offside claim as Bristol City seal point against Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva insisted Kasey Palmer's equaliser at Ashton Gate was "one metre" offside

Nigel Pearson shrugged off Marco Silva's claims that Bristol City were fortunate in claiming a point against Fulham as Kasey Palmer came off the bench to grab a dramatic equaliser at Ashton Gate.

Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Fulham the lead in the second half but City managed to stay in the game with a spirited performance and then Pearson introduced Palmer, Joe Williams and Nathan Baker, switching to wing-backs, to successfully force the issue.

Silva insisted after full-time that Palmer's 79th minute goal was "a metre" offside as the City substitute was ahead of the play when Paulo Gazzaniga saved Chris Martin's initial shot.

"Unfortunately for us (the Bristol City goal) is one metre offside, a clear offside," Silva said, insisting he had seen a reply of the goal . "It's difficult for me to understand because it's clear. Football is like that unfortunately."

Fulham struck the crossbar three times while Harry Wilson wasted at least two good opportunities, and Dan Bentley denied Neeskens Kabano when 1v1. That being said, Nahki Wells also had three good chances and Nathan Baker went close with a header.

"I have no idea," Pearson said, on Silva's claim. "I don't judge whether it's lucky or not I look whether the players have been committed and done what we've asked them to do. It's not my job to get decisions right in terms of what the officials do."

Nathaniel Chalobah was fortunate not to be sent off in the first-half as, having already been booked for one rash and dangerous tackle on George Tanner, he then had two further incidents that possibly warranted a second booking.

Silva's response was then to remove the midfielder at half-time for Harrison Reed and Pearson indicated the Portuguese rejected the accusation that Chalobah was on borrowed time with the officials.

"I've heard their manager had a bit of a dig at that but the fact they took him off at half-time, would suggest he might amend that point of view," Pearson added with a playful smile. "After he got booked he had two challenges that were yellow cards.

"But the referees are there to do a job and it's never easy to get everything right. I'm certainly not going to moan about referees. They see what they see.

"I expect our players to present a tough barrier against our opponents and I accept opponents to do that to us. It's their job to get decisions right or wrong. Their manager is upset about it ... it's gone now, it doesn't matter."

The equaliser ended a tough start to the season for Palmer in which he's been able to force his way into the team, and then failed to deliver in a surprise performance for the Under-23s against Peterborough in midweek.

Palmer asked to play in that game to keep his match fitness up and now will hope his goal can shift him further into his manager's consciousness with away trips against Millwall and Peterborough next week.

"He'll get some feedback about one or two others things, which he's expecting, but I think for somebody in his position who plays as a No10, we haven't played with a No10 all year so he recognises he's got to be adaptable or, when he gets an opportunity, has to work very hard to take it," Pearson said.

"I supposed it's rewarding for him that he scored the goal but I don't care who scores the goals, we had to get ourselves back into it. We could have lost the game but, on another day, we could have won it because we had some good opportunities."

Fulham's poor finishing frustrates boss Silva

Marco Silva bemoaned his Fulham side's profligacy in front of goal after the Whites were pegged back by Bristol City to draw 1-1 at Ashton Gate.

Aleksander Mitrovic's close-range finish just after half-time put Fulham in front and seemingly on course for a sixth win of the season.

But City, who have not won at home under Nigel Pearson in a run that stretches back to last January, equalised 11 minutes from time through former Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer.

Mitrovic hit the bar three times, twice in the final five minutes, and also somehow blasted wide after being found unmarked in the box by Antonee Robinson's fine cross late in the game as City held on for a point.

The result means Fulham have won just one of their past four matches and missed the chance to leapfrog second-placed West Brom, who beat QPR on Friday with a late winner, and remain in fourth place in the Championship table.

Silva, who claimed Palmer should have been flagged offside before scoring, said his side need to be better in front of goal having made two changes at half-time following an underwhelming opening 45 minutes with Harrison Reed and Neeskens Kebano replacing Josh Onomah and Nathaniel Chalobah.

"We have to have more quality up front, be more calm," Silva said.

"In the second half we have to score a second and third goal with the chances that we had.

"Unfortunately for us their goal is a clear offside. It's difficult for me to understand because it's clear.

"We made some changes at half-time, there were some improvements in our play and we started creating chances."

Fulham are back in action at Craven Cottage on Wednesday when they host Swansea City.

Reed rues Fulham's lack of killer instinct

Harrison Reed was left ruing Fulham's failure to kill off Bristol City after the Robins roared back to claim a point at Ashton Gate.

The Fulham substitute made a real impact alongside Neeskens Kebano after coming off the bench at half time to perk up a lacklustre Fulham attack. The Whites went in front four minutes after the interval through Aleksandar Mitrovic but spurned numerous chances to extend their lead and paid the penalty when Kasey Palmer turned home an equaliser with ten minutes left.

Reed told FFC TV after the final whistle:

"We're all disappointed with that one today. We came here, we needed to show a reaction again and the slow start probably cost us today. We got going in the second half, especially in the first fifteen or twenty minutes, found ourselves a goal ahead and then we needed to kill the game.

We needed to come on, bring the energy and lift the boys. I felt like we did that. We just needed to carry on. We needed to score two or three and kill the game."

Crystal Palace boss gives his verdict on former Fulham and Lyon defender's start to life in SE25

Patrick Vieira has stated that he is "not surprised" at how quickly Joachim Andersen has settled seamlessly into life at Crystal Palace.

Andersen, who joined from Lyon on a five-year contract for a deal believed to be in the region of Β£14million, has established himself as a crucial part of Vieira's Palace rebuild, starting every game following the opening day defeat to Chelsea.

Andersen is also instrumental to the style of play, with the defence building the attack from the back. The Danish centre-back's natural ball-playing ability has seen him forge a quick understanding alongside Marc Guehi, who joined from Chelsea in the summer, too.

When asked how important Andersen's experience will be to the team and the style of play that the French World Cup winner is trying to implement, Vieira said: "It's massively important. I am not surprised by him at all because Joachim played in France, he played in Italy, he was in the Premier League last year, so he has experience of moving around and going to a new club.

"He will be a massive help for Marc (Guehi) to build his confidence. He is doing really well."

Speaking on the importance of both Guehi and Andersen having the ability to play out from the back, Vieira said: "When you want to have possession, and you have a centre-back who is really comfortable having the ball at his feet, it is quite important.

"We have Martin (Kelly) and James (Tomkins) as well. In that department, I am really happy with the options that I have."
While Andersen and Guehi have cemented themselves as the first names on Vieira's teamsheet, Will Hughes, who joined from Watford in a deal initially worth Β£6 million, has yet to feature from the bench since he joined.

Speaking on whether the Eagles faithful will see Hughes make his debut soon, Vieira said: "He has been training well. He is ready to start or to come on. Physically, it has been challenging for him because he didn't train with a Premier League team for quite a long time. He needed to catch up, and today, he is ready to get involved.

"At the same time, we have Luka, and physically, he is in a really good place as well. It's really good for me to have those options to choose (from)."

'Forget top two', 'Too inconsistent' – Plenty of Fulham fans voice frustration after dropping more points

Fulham only managed to draw against a stern Bristol City side on Saturday, meaning they've only taken four points from their last 12.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Cottagers at Ashton Gate as they were unable to overcome a City side that have not won a game at home since January 2021.

Fulham took the lead in the second half when Aleksander Mitrovic headed home from a Harry Wilson cross in the 50th minute.

They were unable to build on their lead though and allowed their hosts back into the game. Substitute Kasey Palmer equalised for the Robins just three minutes after coming on as a sub, leaving Fulham staring down the barrel of more dropped points.

Marco Silva's side will know they must improve if they are to finish in the automatics this season, but certainly still have plenty of games left to rediscover their form.

That has not stopped supporters venting their frustration though as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
