Southampton keen on Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho

Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho has emerged on the radar of Southampton.

The Saints are said to have been tracking the youngster for a 'number of months', according to a report by TEAMtalk.

Carvalho, who is 19-years-old, is currently due to be out of contract next summer and is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal at Craven Cottage.

Southampton are keen to lure him away from the Cottagers in the January transfer window.

Story so far

Carvalho caught Fulham's eye playing for Balham in non-league before they signed him.

He had all previously spent time in the academy at Benfica.

The teenager penned his first professional contract in May last year and scored his first senior goal against Southampton in the Premier League.

Impressive so far this season

The England youth international has enjoyed himself so far this term under Marco Silva's guidance.

He has been shown a lot of faith by the Portuguese boss and has scored three goals in five games in the league.

What next?

Carvalho has been linked with a wide variety of clubs over recent times and Southampton are the latest name to emerge in the running.

They have proven to be a great home for young players to develop and these links are not really a surprise.

It will be interesting to see if the Saints make a move this winter.

Fulham run the risk of losing him for free if they can't strike a new contract with him so would have to consider offers in January.

Data Analysis: What went wrong for Fulham against Coventry City?

Fulham lost to 1-4 to Coventry City when they visited the Ricoh Arena on Saturday in the EFL Championship. Marco Silva's side went into the game looking to build on their impressive performance in their 3-1 win against Swansea City in midweek at Craven Cottage. That result had seen them bounce back from taking just one point from a possible six against Bristol City and Reading.

Things started well for Fulham at Coventry with Silva's side taking the lead after 18 minutes after Kyle McFadzean's own goal was allowed to stand by the officials despite a potential foul from Aleksander Mitrovic in the buildup to the goal. However, Fulham were unable to build on that and in the end were dominated by Coventry City in the second half.

Fulham were able to create chances in the first half and also scored the first goal of the game. They looked to finish off the game in the first half but failed to be effective in front of goal. They faced the consequences for their misses in the first half as Coventry City scored four goals within 23 minutes and put the game to bed.

Fulham attempted a total of nine shots in the game but only had the one shot on target, which was taken from a position that was far away from goal. Their only goal was an own goal which was forced in from a corner in the first half. Most of their shots were off target.

Aleksandar Mitrovic who is the top scorer in the Championship only managed to have one shot on goal but his shot was off target as well. Despite having only one shot on goal, he had a high xG which indicates he was able to get into a good position to take the shot but only failed to keep it on target. Mitrovic has averaged 1.72 shots on target in the Championship so far but failed to get any shot on target in the game against Coventry.

Mitrovic did not receive many passes from his teammates in the final third which was a major reason for him to attempt only one shot in the game. He received the ball a bit deeper than he usually does and only received the ball inside the opposition penalty area once. If Fulham would have been able to feed more balls to Mitrovic, it could have been a different story for them.

The above visual shows us the aerial duels attempted by Coventry City in the game against Fulham. Coventry City won more aerial duels while defending in their own half. Fulham attempted more crosses from both flanks hoping for their striker to make the right connection with the ball to put it into the back of the net. But Coventry were able to deal with most of these crosses that Fulham attempted and Kyle McFadzean won the most number of aerial duels for the home side. Although McFadzean scored an own goal which gifted Fulham the lead, he put up a much better defensive display and kept Fulham at bay.

It has not happened many times so far in the Championship this season, but whenever a team has taken the lead against Fulham, Fulham have ended up on the wrong end of the result. Their players lack the mentality and concentration required to produced a comeback in the game when they go down in a game. Fulham were a victim of their own mistakes when they gifted Coventry City the equaliser, which gave the home side the boost and momentum to score more goals in the game. Fulham players on the other hand walked towards the centre line with dropped shoulders with their heads down. They needed a boost from some of their players to fight back and gain the lead.

The defeat saw them drop down to fifth place in the league and leaves plenty of issues for them to sort in the next two weeks. Fulham will be returning to action when they face QPR at the Craven Cottage on October 16th, after the international break.

Fulham set to be boosted by Fabio Carvalho's return from injury as they try to tie 19-year-old star down to new long-term deal amid interest from Real Madrid and top Premier League clubs

Carvalho has been sidelined for a month after suffering a niggling foot injury
But Fulham are set to be boosted by the return of the impressive 19-year-old
He scored three goals in five appearances but then missed seven games
Fulham's form has slumped during his absence with four defeats suffered
Real Madrid and top Premier League clubs are monitoring Carvalho's progress
But Fulham still want the teenager to commit to a new long-term deal there

Fulham are set to be boosted by the return to fitness of wonderkid Fabio Carvalho for after the international break.

But the Cottagers are having to put their hopes of signing the teenager to a new long-term contract on ice until at least the end of the year, raising fears his long-term future may lie elsewhere.

The attacking midfielder, who has scored three goals in five appearances this season, has missed the club's previous seven matches due to a niggling foot injury.

Fabio Carvalho is close to a return from his foot injury in a major boost for Fulham

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder is attracting attention from several leading clubs

But there is hope the 19-year-old will be fit to return for the local derby against Queens Park Rangers on October 16.

Having picked up 13 points from a possible 15 with Carvalho in the side during Fulham's unbeaten start to the season, Marco Silva's team have won just two of their six Championship matches without the youngster.

But Carvalho's return to fitness will come as a major boost to Silva, particular after their disappointing 4-1 loss to Coventry last weekend.

It remains to be seen whether Silva is prepared to throw his talented teen straight back into the team with his imminent return arriving amid a backdrop of growing uncertainty over his future at the club.

The England youth international is widely recognised as one of the brightest young players in the country and his performances have attracted huge attention from England and abroad, with Real Madrid and host of top 10 Premier League clubs monitoring his situation closely.

Fulham's form has slumped since Carvalho suffered the injury in early September

Marco Silva's side crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Coventry City on Saturday in another setback

His existing deal expires at the end of the season but Fulham want to tie their academy graduate down to a new long term contract.

But while the growing interest in Carvalho is becoming an increasing factor in his future, the player's decision to switch representation is also understood to be delaying Fulham's hopes of signing him to a fresh contract.

The youngster's existing agreement with agency Unique Sports Management is due to expire in January, and it is understood Carvalho will not even consider signing a new deal with Fulham until his new management team is in place.

That is of obvious concern to Fulham, who are understandably keen to tie Carvalho down to a new deal give he is out of contract in July.

'Brilliant long-term investment' – Southampton cast eyes over influential Fulham attacker: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World's 'The Verdict' series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Southampton have emerged as an interested party in Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho, as reported by TEAMtalk.

The reports states that The Saints have been monitoring the 19-year-old's progression with The Cottagers for a few months now.

A FLW exclusive from four weeks ago outlined that Barcelona had also joined the race for the exciting teenager, whilst Mail Online have reported that Real Madrid are also in the running.

Carvalho has also attracted the interest of several top-tier clubs across Europe, and with his contract expiring in the summer, it remains to be seen what his next move, or what the best move might be.

We asked three of our writers here at FLW to share their thoughts on Southampton's interest in Carvalho and whether it is the type of signing they should go for...

Marcus Ally
Fabio Carvalho looked an outstanding talent at the start of the season and was a huge part of Fulham's rise to the summit of the division. The drop-off in form that has followed at Craven Cottage demonstrates just how crucial the youngster is to their promotion push.

The move may be a little less desirable for Carvalho if Southampton are in a relegation battle and are looking like they will be a division lower than Fulham come next August. The Cottagers do not need to cash in and will see Carvalho as a player who can develop and thrive in the Premier League where he is in the coming years.

It would be a terrific signing if Ralph Hasenhuttl's men were able to pull it off but considering Fulham's financial muscle it does not seem possible unless the Cottagers fell away from the Championship promotion picture.

Toby Wilding
This does look as though it could be a very good signing for Southampton if they can pull it off.

Carvalho was impressive in the Premier League towards the end of last season with a Fulham side who were plummeting towards relegation, so you do feel he could make an impact in a somewhat more established Premier League side.

Indeed, the experience he has had since then with Fulham will no doubt have improved him further, and he could be brimming with confidence after becoming a key man for the Cottagers, potentially setting him up to do some damage in the top-flight.

At 19-years-old, there is of course still plenty of time for Carvalho to improve even more, meaning he has the potential to flourish in the top-flight in the future.

Add to that the fact that the level of interest there is in the winger would make this something of a coup for Southampton, and it does seem as though this is a deal those in charge at St Mary's should be pushing to get done.

Jordan Rushworth
This would be a brilliant long-term investment for Southampton if they were able to secure the services of Fabio Carvalho, with the exciting attacker having underlined his potential with his form for Fulham this season prior to his recent injury setback.

Southampton a few years ago were one of the very smartest teams in the country in terms of their recruitment with them finding a host of gems like Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic. Doing so enabled the Satins to compete towards the top end of the Premier League and led to profits being generated on some of their additions.

However, recently the Saints have gone away from that and their recruitment has been hit and miss really. Carvalho is exactly the right sort of player for them to be targeting with him someone that is likely to develop into a quality Premier League player in years to come given his talent.

Considering that Carvalho is in a lot of demand, it is not going to be easy for Southampton to sign him. Having said that they could offer him the chance to get more game time in the top-flight than other interested parties perhaps could. While they also have a good record in developing young talents and that marks them out as an attractive proposition.

Jean Michael Seri at Fulham: What do we know so far? Is a new deal likely to happen?

Not many people would have expected Jean Michaël Seri to have been a regular for Fulham this season.

Seri joined Fulham for a club-record fee of £25m in the summer of 2018, but has struggled to impress during his time at Craven Cottage.

Following relegation from the Premier League in 2018/19, the Ivorian moved on loan to Galatasaray with his future looking uncertain.

Last season, having failed to feature regularly under Scott Parker, Seri joined Bordeaux in January on loan until the end of the campaign.

But under Marco Silva, Seri has turned things around, emerging as a key player for the Cottagers as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

With his deal at Craven Cottage set to expire at the end of the season, could he now actually earn himself an extended stay in London?

What do we know so far?

Seri has been a regular under Silva so far this season, making 10 appearances in the Championship. Only one of those appearances have come as a substitute, with the midfielder registering two assists.

It is a surprising turn of events for the 30-year-old, who never looked willing to fight for his place in the Championship before now.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa departed on loan in the summer, and it looked as if Seri would follow suit due to his likely high wages.

But that has not been the case, and Seri has kept his head down, worked hard and earned himself a regular starting berth for the Cottagers.

Is a new deal likely to happen?

A lot depends on whether Fulham win promotion this season or not. Another season in the Championship would leave it unlikely.

As alluded to before, Seri is likely to be on high wages at Craven Cottage given how big of a transfer fee he arrived for three years ago.

Would Fulham be able to afford to renew Seri's deal if they stay in the Championship, when normally, cutting costs would be seen as the priority?

Of course, in January, with six months left on his deal, Seri would be able to discuss terms with another club and potentially join another club on a pre-contract agreement.

Waiting game over key player deal at Fulham set to continue after update

Fulham's waiting game to see if Fabio Carvalho is going to sign a new contract is set to continue a little while yet with the Daily Mail reporting that a change of his management company is now holding things up.

The young attacking midfielder has really created a buzz around him in recent months and he's started this season in top form, though an injury has kept him out in recent weeks.

Indeed, the buzz is not just at Craven Cottage over his head with a number of Premier League clubs and sides around Europe getting linked with him, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

And, that said, Fulham naturally want to sort his contract out as soon as they can given the fact it expires next summer and they currently risk losing him for free next summer.

However, as per the Mail, he's not currently willing to sign a new deal until his management company changes, which is currently set to happen in January.

The Verdict

Fulham fans will be delighted when this saga is over and he does sign a contract, providing he does.

He's a good player and one that could become exceptional, so Fulham naturally need to protect themselves against losing him on the cheap.

Opinion: Fulham man must consider his future carefully as transfer rumours linger

Right now, it would be hard to blame those of a Fulham persuasion for being worried about the future of Fabio Carvalho.

Having emerged onto the scene as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, the 19-year-old has now become a key figure for the club and then Championship.

Prior to the injury that has left him sidelined for the past few weeks, the teenager had scored three goals and provided one assist in five league games to help spearhead the Cottagers' push for an immediate promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Indeed, it is noticeable that Fulham's early season form has been blunted somewhat by Carvalho's absence recently, and that will be a source of concern for the club in the wake of recent speculation around the attacker.

As things stand, Carvalho is into the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage, meaning he could sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club from January, or move anywhere for free at the end of this season if no deal with Fulham has been agreed by then.

Perhaps not surprisingly therefore, it seems as though the teenager is starting to attract plenty of attention from across Europe.

The likes of Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon and Porto, as well as Premier League duo Leeds United and Southampton all linked with Carvalho recently.

Given the appeal for club's of those size in some of the biggest leagues in the world to Carvalho, and with that financial backing behind those sides, you can understand why Fulham might feel they are facing a big challenge to convince the winger to sign a new contract at Craven Cottage.

However, it is hard not to feel that Carvalho would be taking something of a risk if he was to jump at the chance of a move to one of those clubs when the transfer window reopens in January.

If Carvalho was to move to one of those top continental clubs, then the options available to those sides, both at senior and youth level, could leave the winger battling not to get lost in the myriad of talent they possess.

That could then lead to him become a somewhat forgotten man, given his experience still only amounts to a handful of first-team games, potentially making it hard for him to force his way up the pecking order, and stunting his development in the process.

By contrast, a move to a club such as Southampton, who have won just four of their last 27 Premier League games – with two of those victories coming against sides who are now in the Championship, including ironically, Fulham – come January, could leave Carvalho facing the prospect of a swift return to the Championship, and it would be a huge challenge to ask the teenager to be the one to prevent that.

On the flip to side to that, if Carvalho was sign a new dealto remain at Fulham, and as early indicators suggest, prove himself to be a key figure in helping the Cottagers secure a return to the top-flight, then that would surely guarantee him the chance to prove himself week in week out in the Premier League with Marco Silva's side next season.

Should that happen, then given the promise he has already shown at that level, and the developments he could make with a full campaign in the Championship, you would expect Carvalho to flourish in the Premier League next season.

That in turn, would make it a lot harder for potential buyers not to play Carvalho if by that point, he is already an established and proven top-flight player, giving himself an even stronger foundation to build from in a couple of years time.

Admittedly, there is no guarantee that things would play out in that exact way, but the evidence so far does seem to point in that direction, so these sort of scenarios ought to be coming into Carvalho's mind as he considers his next move.

At 19-years-old, Carvalho certainly has time on his side when it comes his career. You feel that now, he must use it wisely.

Fulham on course for positive injury boost in time for QPR clash

Fulham have hopes that Fabio Carvalho is going to be fit to face Queens Park Rangers after the international break.

The two west London rivals are heading in the right direction so far this season with them both up near the sharp end, though it is perhaps Rangers who might be happier with how they're looking in the table than Fulham, given the Whites will feel as though they should be up right at the top.

Both, though, are in decent enough shape as we head into another international break and, once it has ended, they clash at Craven Cottage on October 16th.

Fulham will be looking to make home advantage count, then, and have been given an extra edge, potentially, by the news that Fabio Carvalho, according to the Daily Mail, could be fit for the clash.

The Verdict

The attacking midfielder has got bags of talent and having him back involved in a big game against west London rivals Queens Park Rangers could be a huge boost for Fulham.

The player has been missing for the last few weeks now and has been a miss in all fairness, with Fulham still producing some good performances and results but perhaps getting a little bit sketchy in terms of consistency.

They'll hope, then, he's back sooner rather than later.

Robinson looking forward to facing Jamaica after his big World Cup qualifying start

At the individual level, Antonee Robinson was one of the biggest success stories for the U.S. team in the September window. Now the Fulham left back looks to continue his top form against Jamaica on Thursday in Austin. ASN's Brian Sciaretta reports on the team's preparation for the game with a look at the English-born American fullback.

THE SEPTEMBER WORLD CUP qualifiers were mixed for the United States with two draws followed by a stunning second half in a big win over Honduras. It was also an important window that saw several players improve their status on the team. In that regard, one of the biggest winners from that camp was Antonee Robinson who put in a series of strong performances at left back.

Robinson, 24, has been with the U.S. national team since 2018 when he was first called up by interim manager Dave Sarachan. The September window, however, seemed to mark a turning point for the English-born American where it looked like he truly fit into the team's style and approach.

"Going back to the start, especially when I started working with Gregg - for me, it definitely felt like it was taking a while to get used to the system and the roles and responsibilities I had in this team compared to what club level and the different tactics and things," Robinson said. "But games come and you get used to playing with the players that I've been playing with for a while now. It gets a lot easier understanding what you need to do, and it felt like it really settled in last camp with some of my responsibilities on the pitch. Just being confident and try to enjoy, enjoy playing football and playing for my country, which replicated in good performances."

"Obviously there's been about some tough times personally with the team and good times, but definitely it wasn't just a straight road of coming in and being a guaranteed starter - which pretty sure there's not many people who have a guaranteed place on our team," he added. "We've all got to work hard, and we all know that we're all going to be needed at different points for different things."

For Robinson, there is also a change in mentality at the club level that has affected his play with the national team – for the better. While Fulham was relegated last season, the team has found itself pushing to be in the mix for promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Prior to this season, Robinson had been in relegation battles in every season of his pro career – first in the Championship with Bolton in 2017/18 followed by two more seasons in the second tier with Wigan. Last season was his first in the Premier League but Fulham was doomed by a slow start.

Now in 2021/22 with Fulham, Robinson is with a team that expects to win most of their games and be among the best teams in the league. Offensively, Robinson is now on the front foot more while not being pinned back defensively as much. This mental approach mirrors what the U.S. team faces in CONCACAF competitions where wins are expected.

"It is definitely a shift in mentality," Robinson explained. "The first couple of years of my career, I've been in teams that have been them relegation fights. Now that we're back in the Championship, the expectations on us is to go straight back up... That's a nice feeling going into a game, feeling that everyone's confident that we can win. It's similar to here when we come to the states, it's we're expected to qualify. We expect it to be one of the better teams. At the same time, I feel like that they're the games that motivate all the other teams...That just makes it so that not every game is going to be an easy game like you'd hope."

Thursday's game against Jamaica will be an important one for the U.S. team to create momentum ahead of a tough trip to Panama followed by a home match against Costa Rica to conclude the window. In the last window, the U.S. team was slow to start couldn't capitalize on its many chances. It was actually Robinson who started the team's ferocious comeback in Honduras with his first national team goal – followed by a backflip celebration.

Looking back, Robinson doesn't think the U.S. team got off to a bad start having earned four points on the road and not having lost. Still, he admits it was a learning process for the team – citing the 16 different U.S. players who made their World Cup qualifying debut in those three games.

In the early stages of this camp, Robinson senses that the team feels more prepared now knowing what the game are like.

"I think the focus was there from everyone," Robinson said comparing the last window to this. "Obviously, we were coming off the back of a very good summer being successful in two tournaments, so everyone's confidence was really high, and maybe that was a factor.... The amount of people like me who made their qualifying debuts last camp - it just shows that it's an experience that you have to kind of go through it, sort of see the expectations, what it will be like. You need to realize this it is going to be tough, but you also have to have been through the games to realize how tough it's going to be. And now we've got a lot of players who've been through that scene that it's not just going to be an easy ride. Starting out [this camp], our expectations probably a lot more consistent. We know what we need to get out of each game."

In putting that mentality to the test, everyone is expecting Jamaica to be a tough test. The "Reggae Boyz" have begun the Octagonal qualifying round poorly with just one point from three games (a 2-1 away loss to Mexico, a 3-0 home loss to Costa Rica, and a 1-1 away draw to Costa Rica).

Like the U.S. team without Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic, Jamaica will be without its top players in West Ham's Michail Antonio and Aston Villa's Leon Bailey. Still the team's current roster consists of several players with impressive resumes, mostly in England. One of them is forward Bobby Decordova-Reid who is a teammate of Robinson at Fulham.

"But it's ultimately going to come down to how they've set up as a team against how we set up as a team and not just individual players," Robinson said of the game. "As long as we get ourselves right and our strategy to how we're going to nullify him and beat them as a team. I don't see it as an issue."

"In terms of tactically, Gregg wanted to be a bit more direct this camp," he continued. "It's just about creating chances and being really aggressive and on the front foot trying to put the other teams on the back foot so that we can put the pressure on them and we can try and convert our chances to win games."

Fulham Signs Another Sponsorship Deal with a Betting Company

Fulham FC signed a sponsorship deal with Asiabet33 as an official Asian betting partner for the current 2021/2022 season. This will be the ninth Premier League club with a gambling company on its jerseys.

The gaming provider was established in 2017, and it reaches Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan, while also strategizing future expansions in other Asian destinations. The company is also considered a pioneer among the gaming technology providers in Asia.

The deal benefits both companies – for example, Fulham could potentially expand their fan base in Asia. Asiabet33, on the one hand, could start to set a stable foothold in Europe, while on the other hand could also secure a reputable name for itself among its competitors by putting its logo on the shirt of a Premier League team.

This is not the first time that Fulham has a gambling company as a sponsor. Four of the last five sponsors were with gaming entities – Marathon Bet, Grosvenor Casinos, Dafabet and BetVictor, which was the first during the 2013/14 season. According to a recent study, however, more than half of the club's supporters are against such sponsorships, which to a large degree reflects the general fanbase sentiments.

The Beginning of a Toxic Relationship?
The sponsorship deal for Fulham was announced amid loud discussions about the future of such relationships between soccer clubs and gaming providers. Last year, a House of Lords committee recommended that all gambling companies' sponsorships should be banned from 2023 onwards.

In March this year, several clubs initiated an official discussion on this subject – with Fulham being among them again. Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton, West Ham, and Wolves, which all have a betting company as a sponsor, have tried to reason with the politicians on this subject.

Back then, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said, "If there needs to be a rebalancing, that is fine, but we do not think there should be a prohibition on sponsorship of soccer clubs or other sports clubs, for that matter."

The 192-page report from the House of the Lords issued in 2020 is quite blunt that it's "time to act to reduce gambling-related harm." The report targets many of the activities of betting companies and offers more than 50 recommendations. The general political sentiments in Britain are unfavorable towards gambling and see the curbing of smoking and the laws against the tobacco industry for the past few decades as a source of inspiration when it comes to the gambling industry.

The Price Tag – Is It Too High?
The influence of gambling companies on soccer clubs cannot be underestimated. In March 2020, EFL Chair Rick Parry warned of the "catastrophic" impact on finances if gambling sponsorship was removed immediately. According to him, the clubs will lose at least £40 million ($46.2 million).

Fulham, for example, will also pay a dear price if it loses its sponsor. For instance, for the 2018/2019 season, the club generated around £17.7 million ($24 million) in sponsorship deals. Even though this includes numerous arrangements, the sum gives a good idea of how much is at stake here. The average Premier League club loss is around £8.75 million ($11.88 million). Even though there are only several clubs with sponsorship deals with gambling companies, there are even more deals with side advertising around the pitch.

I would like to believe that Fabio Carvalo will take into account the Fulham
supporters who are desperate to see him sign a new contract and the longer
he delays the more our supporters will worry that he has no intention of
signing again for us. He does have to look after his own interests but consider
the club who gave him his big chance.
