What happened to Fulham's 'English Lionel Messi' who has disappeared off the map

Patrick Roberts was once likened to the Argentine superstar but after joining Manchester City he has now lost his way and has been relegated as a 'player for hire'

Patrick Roberts has not realised the potential he showed early on in his career

It is a far cry from earlier in his career when the attacking midfielder was described as "extraordinary" by then Fulham boss Felix Magath.

Magath was the man who handed Roberts his Premier League debut at the age of just 17 - ironically against his future employers City.

He had previously been nicknamed "Mini Messi" in the youth ranks at Fulham and after just 22 senior games for the Cottagers, he was snapped up by City for a fee of £12million.

The price tag and the aforementioned comparisons with Messi meant big things were expected of Roberts, maybe not straight away but certainly within a few years.

After sporadic appearances in the first half of the 2015-16 campaign, he was sent out on loan to Celtic on an 18-month arrangement.

At Parkhead he would impress particularly in the 2016-17 season, when he notched double figures. There was also the notable moment when he scored against his parent club in a 1-1 draw in a Champions League dead rubber.

Roberts had sufficiently impressed north of the border and the loan was extended again, to cover the 2017-18 season but he injury would limit his impact.

Upon returning to City Roberts could not force his way into the superstar-packed set-up that Pep Guardiola had brought together.

Predictably, another loan followed and this time it was Spain where Roberts was heading. But it was largely a season to forget as his temporary stay with Girona ended in relegation.

In what was becoming a familiar theme, Roberts was then loaned out once more for 2019-20. He initially joined Premier League newcomers Norwich but it was nothing short of a disaster.

He made just three league appearances, all as late cameos off the bench and earned the wrath of boss Daniel Farke.

"We have to be a bit careful with our expectations of a player from Manchester City," he said. "It's not like he won the title for them last season.

"He was out on loan and didn't really play for a side in Spain, who were relegated. That is not easy in terms of confidence to come to a new club and be in your rhythm. He had a really, really good pre-season but then he looked a bit tired, which is quite normal, and now we have a lot of competition."

The loan was cut short in January 2020 and Roberts was sent back out to the Championship, with Middlesbrough. He impressed enough to earn another stay at the Riverside for the following season.

But by the time the January window came round he had played just ten games and was expressing his frustration at being sidelined. A second loan was cut short and City farmed Roberts out again, this time to Wayne Rooney's Derby.

By now Roberts' star was fading, and quickly. His performances were bordering on the erratic until a final day sprinkling of magic with a vital goal - his first in almost a year - in a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday that kept Derby up.

Off the back of that positive, Roberts returned to City last summer but again his chances of inclusion were limited.

He was despatched to France along with three City colleagues for this season but so far he has accrued just 14 minutes of match action, as a late sub in a league defeat to Lyon.

Roberts is now into the final year of his deal at the Etihad and barring a sudden change of mind from Guardiola, he looks destined for a clean break next summer.

Carvalho to exit? 2 Fulham transfer scenarios that could materialise in the January window

Fulham will be looking to pick up where they have left off once they return from the international break, with the club currently occupying fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship.

Marco Silva's side have played some brilliant football so far this season and owe a great deal of debt to the likes of Aleksander Mitrovic and Harry Wilson, with the duo having performed superbly up to this point.

However their copy book has been somewhat blotched after they lost heavily against Coventry City recently, perhaps underlining some areas that they need to improve upon.

With winter fast approaching, Silva may well once again revisit the possibility of strengthening his squad, whilst there is also a chance that there could be some departures.

With that in mind, here we have taken a look at TWO Fulham transfer scenarios that could materialise in the January transfer window...

Anguissa to leave?
André Zambo Anguissa has joined Italian side Napoli on loan this season and could well have played his last game in a Fulham shirt.

The midfielder has had an eventful spell with the Whites ever since arriving from Marseille back in the summer of 2018 and is now on his second loan away from Craven Cottage.

His previous move to Villarreal didn't work out for various reasons and as a result he returned to West London and featured heavily under Scott Parker before the manager's exit to Bournemouth.

Now with Napoli possessing an option to buy the player outright, Anguissa could finally leave Fulham for good.

Carvalho to exit?
Fabio Carvalho is a name that has been talked about for months in the Championship and it appears interest in the player's services isn't going to die down anytime soon as his contract wrangle with the club continues.

The attacking midfielder's current contract is due to expire in the summer of next year, which means the Whites are at risk of potentially losing him for free if a new deal cannot be struck between both parties.

A recent report has suggested that negotiations are being held up because the player is currently in the process of switching management companies.

With there being interest in the youngster from both in England and abroad, Fulham may well be forced to cash in come January if a new contract remains unsigned.

Fulham man already worth €10m+ more than previously agreed price – Club delighted with deal

As you might have seen from the number of articles we've done on all the praise André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is getting in Italy, they are thrilled about his loan to Napoli.

The Fulham midfielder, much like he did at Villarreal, has managed to quickly integrate his new team, to the point where it's believed the Serie A side will trigger the €15m purchase clause sooner rather than later.

For them, it's a win-win situation, since they are already convinced that paying the fee to the Cottagers is the right move, knowing full well they would find themselves with a player capable of bringing them an immediate profit.

That's because, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Fulham player is already worth more than €25m, as they explain that when 'comparing the midfielder's current value with the valuation agreed at the end of August, there is already a difference in surplus of €10m'.

This is due to the fact that he is 'considered one of the surprise of this first part of the league' with his performances, slowly but surely giving the Championship side food for thought when it comes to the amount they agreed to for the purchase clause.

Then again, he wanted to leave, and €15m is better than an unhappy player on the bench or in the stands at Craven Cottage.

How is Louis Saha getting on ever since leaving Fulham?

Louis Saha was a player who won almost all there is to win in the game during his time at clubs such as Fulham, Manchester United and Everton.

However, it was with the Cottagers that the Frenchman really burst onto the scene in the Premier League, with the club's then manager Jean Tigana signing him for a fee of £2.1 million from Saha's boyhood club, Metz.

"I am sure he will follow the success of his contemporaries Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka. I believe he will be a very good player in the First Division and has the right qualities to be a success in the Premiership", said Tigana after clinching the signing of the striker and it is fair to say that he was right to make such a prediction.

Fast forward four seasons in the English top flight and Saha had notched up an impressive 63 goals in 141 games for the Whites and as a result of this, Manchester United were keen on bringing him to Old Trafford.

He had previously impressed Sir Alex Ferguson during Fulham's 3-1 win at the home of the Red Devils and in the end the club parted with the best part of £12.4 million in 2004 to bring him to the North West.

Again, Saha showed superb form whilst playing for United, with his goals and all round contribution helping both he and his teammates to win two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League and one League Cup.

Even though injuries largely disrupted three of his five seasons in a red shirt, Saha finished up with 42 goals in 124 games before signing for Everton in 2008 for an undisclosed fee.

Initially signed on a pay as you play deal by the Toffees, the striker still managed to enjoy a successful stint at Goodison Park, scoring 34 goals in 115 games, whilst also helping the club to an FA Cup final along the way.

Brief spells with the likes of Spurs, Sunderland and Lazio then followed before Saha hung up his boots in the summer of 2013.

Now aged 43, the former France international appeared on television several times as a pundit and is looking to grow his career in the media after retiring.

Asiabet33 signs deal with Fulham FC

Asiabet33 will be Fulham FC's official Asian betting partner for the current season.

UK.- Despite growing sentiment turning against gambling sponsorship in the UK, the deals keep on coming. EFL Championship club Fulham FC has signed with Asiabet33 as its official Asian betting partner for the 2021/22 season.

The company offers technological solutions to the Asian betting and gaming market, with a presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Japan.

Managing director and co-founder Leo Li said: "Asiabet33 is thrilled to be partnered with Fulham Football Club to service the Asian market. This partnership is a monumental opportunity for us to grow from strength to strength as a prominent player in the Asian gaming technology industry.

"Working with Fulham provides us with the necessary resources to hone the skill sets of our team members and deliver the best possible experience for our clients."

The deal follows Fulham's hook up with the betting and financial trading company Spreadex in July.

Jon Don-Carolis, Fulham FC Sales Director, said: "We are delighted to have Asiabet33 on board as our betting partner in the Asian region and look forward to working with them further to develop our global fanbase."

Since Fulham was relegated from the Premier League to the Championship last season, Fulham may escape the highly expected ban on gambling sponsorship in top-flight football.

The UK government is expected to introduce restrictions as part of its ongoing review of gambling legislation, but it's believed that ministers are wary about applying a ban to leagues any lower than the Premier League.

The English Football League has warned that such a ban would have a detrimental impact on the finances of clubs in the lower divisions.

However, last month, League One's Bolton Wanderers FC announced it was putting an end to its connections with the gambling industry.

Olakigbe at the double as U18s beat Blues

A brace from Michael Olakigbe ensured Fulham under 18s climbed to the top of the Premier U18 League Division 1 South with a comfortable win at Birmingham City this afternoon.

The England youth international continued his superb goalscoring start to the season by grabbing a match settling double after Jaylan Wildbore's close-range finish had put the young Whites ahead. New under 18s coach Ali Melloul enjoyed a excellent start to his tenure after taking over from Steve Wigley, with the visitors dominating the opening stages of a very watchable encounter.

Fulham's clearest chances initially came from set players with Wildbore and Harvey Araujo heading wide from corners. George Okkas then struck a post with a powerful free-kick before Wildbore prodded the away side in front. Alfie Brooks did brilliantly to deny Luke Harris after the striker had latched onto a floated cross from Devan Tanton, but Wildbore was on hand to sidefoot home from eight yards.

The Whites continued to play on the front foot, although their second goal owed much to a mix-up at the back. Brooks tried to play a short ball out of defence having received a backpass but Olakigbe, who had led the Fulham press, nipped in to seize possession and roll the simplest of finishes into an empty net. That strike effectively killed the contest – although Fulham were eager to add further goals in the second half.

Wildbore and Imani Lanquedoc spurned good chances to extend Fulham's lead, with Brooks making a fine save from the latter, before Olakigbe took matters into his own hands to round off the scoring with a sensational strike. He collected a pass from Tyler Caton and spun sharply twenty five yards from goal before firing an unstoppable finish into the top corner. Fulham are now a point clear of Arsenal and Crystal Palace at the top of the table and return to league action when Chelsea visit Motspur Park on October 23rd.

BIRMINGHAM CITY UNDER 18s (3-4-2-1): Brooks; Browne (Williams 65), Nguepissi, Carsley; Sullivan (Khela 83), Ogor, Patterson (Home 65), James; Bellingham, Hall; Wakefield. Subs (not used): Mayo, Rushton.

FULHAM (4-2-3-1): McNally; Tanton, Araujo, de Fougorelles, C. Robinson; Caton, Okkas (Gordon 62, Parker 69); Wildbore (Osmond 76), Olakigbe, Lanquedoc; Sanderson. Subs (not used): Paternoster.

GOALS: Wildbore (24), Olakigbe (41, 75).

Jimmy Hogan Ceremony

Former Fulham player and manager, Jimmy Hogan is to be honoured this week in a special ceremony, where a fresh headstone will be unveiled at his burial place.

More famous as a European coach than an English footballer, Jimmy Hogan played for and managed Fulham during his long career. Born in Nelson on the 16th October 1882, Hogan played for Rochdale, Burnley and Nelson before joining Fulham in October 1905.

The highlight of his playing days was appearing for Fulham against Newcastle United in the 1908 FA Cup semi-final at Anfield.  However, Jimmy had an ineffectual match as they suffered a 6-0 defeat. Hogan later played for Swindon Town and Bolton Wanderers before injury forced him to give up playing to concentrate on his coaching career. He was interned Hungary for a short time during World War One.

He coached in Holland, Austria (including the national side), Hungary, Switzerland, Germany and France.  Hogan formed a famous partnership with Hugo Meisl in Austria and these two were given much credit for the development of the game in Europe to the point where, technically, it outstripped the British game.

He is credited with laying the foundation for the great Hungarian team of the 1950's which featured the likes of Ferenc Puskas. Hogan returned to England to manage Fulham in May 1934, but the players were not ready for his new methods and training routines, and he was sacked whilst lying in a hospital bed, recovering from an appendicitis operation in March 1935.

Hogan was way ahead of his time and involved himself in every aspect of the players' routines, ball skills and diets as well as fitness and team tactics, preferring the close passing game he saw at the Cottage in his playing days. Hogan had more success at Aston Villa, who employed him as manager in August 1936 and he took them to the Second Division title and an FA Cup semi-final in 1937/38. From 1940-1959 he coached at Burnley, Brentford, Celtic and Villa producing many fine young players.

The ceremony has been arranged by the Turf Moor Memorial Garden. The unveiling of the headstone will take place at Burnley cemetery on Friday, October 8th.

Representatives of many of Jimmy's former football clubs, including MTK Budapest, Burnley, Aston Villa, Bolton Wanders, Celtic and Fulham will be in attendance this Friday, along with many of the patrons and groups that made the project happen. Members of Jimmy's family will also attend.

Peter Briggs, Chairman of the Turf Moor Memorial Garden, and project lead for this event commented:

"This project has brought together a large number of individuals to support the memory of a footballing great.

"Too many people still haven't heard of Jimmy Hogan and what he did for football, however this small token may go some way to bring his story to more people and thank him for his efforts."

The project to create a lasting marker on Jimmy's grave is being financed by the Turf Moor Memorial Garden, Burnley Former Players Association (BFPA), Burnley FC Supporters Group, Aston Villa Football Club, Fulham Football Club, the Celtic Grave Society, MTK Budapest, György Szöllősi, President of the Hungarian Sports Journalists' Association, former Burnley Football Club directors Clive Holt, Martin Hobbs, Terry Crabb, Brendan Flood and Barry Kilby, along with current Burnley Football Club director John Banaszkiewicz and members of Jimmy Hogan's family. Stevenson Memorial have also provided funds and have donated a plaque which has been mounted next to Turf Moor stadium within their Memorial Garden.

Anyone that would like to support the endeavour can donate to the project via Peter Briggs on 07966 424188 or email [email protected]

Williams makes Wales U19 debut

Fulham defender Jay Williams made his debut for Wales' under 19 international side in a 0-0 draw against Georgia this afternoon.

The eighteen year-old lined up at right back in the World Cup qualifier and was booked in the first half before being substituted at half-time. The youngster's Fulham team-mate, Luke Harris, was an unused substitution. The young Welsh side face Norway on Saturday before travelling to Kosovo for their third Group 10 fixture on Tuesday afternoon.

Fulham youngster Jacob Adams completes Walton Casuals loan switch

Fulham have confirmed the temporary departure of young goalkeeper Jacob Adams, who has linked up with non-league side Walton Casuals.

Despite the fact the transfer window is currently closed, EFL sides are still allowed to do business with non-league sides.

It allows clubs to offload young talents on temporary deals, which is exactly what Fulham have now done with young goalkeeper Jacob Adams.

As confirmed on the club's official website, non-league side Walton Casuals have struck a deal to bring Adams in on a temporary basis.

The 20-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign with the club, giving him the opportunity to pick up more first-team experience away from Craven Cottage as he looks to forge a career in the senior game.

It will be hoped that Adams can nail down a starting spot as he strives to further his development away from his parent club.

Jumping up to Fulham
Adams linked up with the Cottagers earlier this year, arriving in February after a successful spell on trial with the club while they were still in the Premier League.

The move marked a hefty jump up the football ladder, having spent his entire career prior in non-league.

He has previously spent time on the books with Hullbridge Sports, Southend Manor (loan), Staines Town and East Grinstead. Now, he will be looking to make the most of his opportunity to impress out on loan with the Stags.

Southampton keen to sign Fulham's Fabio Carvalho?

Southampton are reportedly considering a January swoop to sign Fulham's teenage midfielder Fabio Carvalho.

The 19-year-old made a bright start to the new Championship campaign, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the opening five matches, before picking up a toe injury which has ruled him out for the last eight games across all competitions.

Fulham are at risk of losing Carvalho for free next summer as his contract expires in June 2022, and TEAMtalk claims that Southampton are one of a number of Premier League clubs who are monitoring the situation.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are believed to be another team who have expressed their interest in the Lisbon-born playmaker.

Fulham remain in talks with the player's representatives over extending his contract and they are confident that an agreement can be reached.

Southampton, meanwhile, believe they can persuade Carvalho to move to St Mary's and are prepared to table a cash offer in January to try and tempt Fulham to sell their highly-rated starlet.

Carvalho has played 11 times for Fulham's senior side since making his debut in September 2020, and has also featured on six occasions for the England Under-18s squad.

Transfer News: Southampton eyeing January move for Fabio Carvalho

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing 19-year-old prodigy Fabio Carvalho from Fulham in the January transfer window.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Fabio Carvalho continues to become more highly sought-after with every passing day. The latest club to be linked with the Fulham whizkid are Southampton, who are seeking a move in the January transfer window for the 19-year-old.

Fabio Carvalho has been with Fulham since he arrived from Balham in 2014. Over the last seven years, the teenage prodigy has come leaps and bounds at the London club before making his first-team debut last season. However, it is at the onset of the new campaign that he has established himself as a regular for the Cottagers.

So far in 2021/22, Carvalho has three goals and an assist in five appearances in the Championship, and has been one of the top performers in the second tier of English football. His progress has not gone unnoticed in the slightest, with a number of top clubs across Europe already setting their sights on him. In addition, Premier League strugglers Southampton also seem to be interested.

Southampton have not made the best of starts to the 2021/22 season, sitting 17th on the Premier League table after the first seven gameweeks. In fact, the Saints are one of four top-flight clubs that are yet to get their first league win of the campaign, although they have only lost thrice.

However, it is clear that Ralph Hasenhuttl & co. will need some inspiration in attack if they are to maintain their Premier League status. With that in mind, Carvalho is a viable target for Southampton, especially with Theo Walcott now well into his thirties while Stuart Armstrong does not seem to be in Hasenhuttl's plans.

So, Carvalho could come in as a competitor to Mohamed Elyounoussi and Moussa Djenepo to play off of the two central strikers. And with that in mind, Southampton are eyeing a potential January move for Carvalho, hoping to take advantage of his contract situation, with the 19-year-old whizkid in the final year of his deal with Fulham.

However, Southampton are not the only club in pursuit of Carvalho, who has also been linked with Real Madrid, Chelsea and West Ham United, among others. As for the interest from Southampton, it will be interesting to see if the Saints can beat some of the bigger clubs to land the Fulham ace in January.

So sad to read about the demise of Patrick Roberts. When he left us I really thought he was going to become the best player we had seen at Fulham since Haynes, he looked so good.
Interesting now to speculate if he would have made better progress if he had stayed with us, he certainly would have benefitted from more quality game time.
I wonder if it is worth bringing him back to the Cottage on a free transfer and short contract.

Carvalho needs to see what happened to not only Roberts but also Hyndman & Sessegnon who thought the grass was greener elsewhere.
