Kevin Gallen urges QPR to make a change ahead of Fulham clash

Former QPR striker Kevin Gallen has urged Mark Warburton's side to "tighten up at the back" ahead of their west London derby with Fulham on the weekend.

Of the sides in the top half of the Championship, only Reading have conceded more goals than the R's (16 in 11 games) this season.

Warburton's side have been fantastic in front of goal themselves this term, finding the net 22 times, with only Fulham having scored more.

They travel to Craven Cottage to take on their west London rivals on the weekend and, speaking to West London Sport, Gallen has suggested the clash will show exactly where the R's are right now.

He said: "It's a very good game and it will be good to really see where QPR are. We came up against West Brom, didn't really think they were better than us, Bournemouth maybe for an hour were, and now Fulham away.

"If we can get something out of Fulham away. Three points out of nine is not great but if you don't get any points against the top-level of Bournemouth, West Brom, and Fulham then you're sort of half thinking are we going to be in the top six."

He has warned his former club that they'll have to tighten things up at the back, however, against a Fulham side that includes Aleksandar Mitrovic alongside a host of other attacking talent.

He said: "I think we need to tighten up at the back. That's quite a big thing because we have got goals in the team – we're always going to score.

"The performances have been there. If you're consistently putting in performances then you'll win more than you lose.

"I think we're well in with a good chance of being in the top six."

It looks like a good time to play Fulham, who were very inconsistent ahead of the international break, and a win for the R's would see them leapfrog their local rivals and climb as high as fourth should results elsewhere go their way.

The Verdict

It's hard to argue with Gallen here, while there's been a lot to be impressed about when it comes to the R's this season there is no denying the fact that they've been fragile defensively.

That's not to say that the likes of Rob Dickie, Yoann Barbet, and Jordy de Wijs have been poor but more that the open and expansive style of football Warburton has his team playing has led to lots of chances being given up.

Offering a team with the attacking quality of Fulham that many chances could be fatal for the R's on the weekend, particularly if Mitrovic is in the mood.

It'll be interesting to see whether Warburton looks to shore things up a little in the midfield to stop that happening.

Fulham's top 5 performers so far this season according to WhoScored – do you agree?

Fulham have had an above average start to the Championship this season.

Marco Silva is in his first season with the club and they currently find themselves in 5th-place, just two points off 2nd. Having started the season in electric form, Fulham have struggled recently and have only picked up one win in their last four they'll be hoping to get back on track after the international break.

Here we take a look at Fulham's top five performers so for this season, as per WhoScored.

5. Tosin Adarabioyo 6.98
Fulham's central defender has played all bar the recent defeat to Coventry this season. Despite only being 24, Adarabioyo provides great experience with his time at Man City and previous loan spells in the Championship.

He's only claimed two clean sheets this season but his calmness and decision-making are a reason why he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

4. Antonee Robinson 7.10
The USA international has provided an attacking source down the left-hand side and has chipped in with one assist. His pace is a key attribute and he is keen to link up with Fulham's attackers.

Robinson, recently scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 away to Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup.

3. Harry Wilson 7.19
Fulham's tricky winger has already picked up three goals and three assists this season. The dead ball specialist predominantly starts on the right but loves to cut on his left foot.

Despite Wilson getting sent off against Huddersfield he has enjoyed a good start to his Fulham career. If Silva can get Wilson playing to his best, Fulham will be in for a positive season.

2. Fabio Carvalho 7.59
The 19-year-old has taken the Championship by storm in his debut season for the club. Despite only appearing five times this season, he has already picked up three goals and one assist.

Carvalho has been out with an injury he sustained against Stoke City at the end of August and has been a big miss for Fulham since. Fulham have only won two games since he picked up his injury and Silva will be hoping to see him in the starting XI sooner rather than later.

1. Aleksandar Mitrović 7.71
Unsurprisingly, the Championship's join top goalscorer finds himself top of this list. Fulham's main man has already got 10 goals to his name which has included a hat-trick against Swansea City. The striker has further provided three assists to his name and has played  key role in getting Fulham where they are in the league.

Mitrović has been nominated for August and Septembers Championship Player of the Month and if Fulham can keep their goalscorer fit, he and Fulham will be in for a good season.

Internationals: England Boys Shine!

Academy

Jay Stansfield got himself a goal on Monday for England Under-20s, who fired five past the Czech Republic. Our young forward started the game and made a huge contribution, also playing a large part for Tino Anjorin's goal later in the game.

Stanno was taken off on 71 minutes for Leeds United's Lewis Bate.

The goals kept on coming for our England boys, with Michael Olakigbe scoring one goal and getting one assist on Monday afternoon for England Under-18s. The young Lions put in a convincing display to cruise past Russia with a 3-0 win. Olakigbe's Fulham teammate, Harvey Araujo, also featured from the start.

Our nippy winger got his reward with some excellent pressing from the front. After taking the ball off a defender, he held off another challenge before coolly slotting his effort past the goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, Olakigbe took the ball down the left before pulling it back to Lewis Hall, who found the net.

Three goals down one end and a clean sheet down the other made it a memorable day for both our boys.

It was a contrasting weekend for Luke Harris and Jay Williams, whose Wales Under-19s side suffered a disappointing 5-0 defeat to Norway on Sunday.

Williams remained an unused substitute, while Harris played 72 minutes for Rob Edwards' side before being swapped. The boys will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday, when they face Kosovo in a qualifying match.

George Okkas' Cyprus Under-19s lost 1-0 to Romania in their rematch, while Ziyad Larkeche's France Under-20s drew 1-1 with Tunisia.

First Team

Bobby De Cordova-Reid featured on Sunday for Jamaica, who played out a 0-0 draw with Canada in their World Cup Qualifier. Bobby featured for 74 minutes and helped create a couple of chances for his side, but the Canadian defenders protected their goal well when called into action.

Over in Group H, Slovakia picked up their fourth World Cup Qualifiers draw, this time against Croatia. Marek Rodák featured in goal and made a few smart saves to deny first Mario Pašalić and later Andrej Kramarić.

Harry Wilson's Wales picked up what could be a vital three points on Monday, with an early Kieffer Moore goal giving them a 1-0 win over Estonia.

Wilson was the first player on the field to threaten, when his dipping free-kick just six minutes in whizzed over the crossbar.

Jean Michaël Seri started for Ivory Coast, who narrowly beat Malawi by two goals to one. Our midfielder was replaced on 75 minutes after a good day's work.

Swansea CEO delivers Matt Grimes update following failed Fulham summer transfer approach

Swansea City are still 'in dialogue' with club captain Matt Grimes surrounding his future, according to CEO Julian Winter.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the Liberty Stadium at the end of the season and he was widely expected to depart the club in the summer transfer window.

There was said to be Premier League interest in the central midfielder with the likes of Southampton taking a keen interest in his signature, but it was Swansea's Championship rivals Fulham who were the ones making concrete offers.

The Cottagers came in with a bid of around £2.5 million for Grimes but that was rejected by Swansea who believed it to not match their valuation of a player they snapped up from Exeter City in 2015.

Despite the Swans not firing on all cylinders under Russell Martin this season, Grimes has featured in all 11 Championship matches and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he may still extend his contract with the club.

In a club update published last night, Winter has not closed the door on the player being a Swan beyond the summer of 2022, saying: "There was, of course, speculation surrounding Matt Grimes during the transfer window, but the fact of the matter is that no club reached our valuation of Matt and we will continue to have dialogue with him about his situation."

But he has been a credit to himself and the club and shown a great commitment to training and performances on the pitch which have been of real quality – an embodiment of his character as our captain."

The Verdict

There was considerable admiring glances towards Grimes during the summer, so it would be a shock if he did actually extend his deal beyond its current expiry date of June 2022.

Grimes has been a great servant to Swansea and even if he proves not to be Premier League quality, it can't be argued that he deserves a chance.

It's just a shame for the club though that they are unlikely to receive a fee for the player, but it was up to them to turn down a seven-figure offer just a few months ago.

The power is now in Grimes' hand and January could be a pivotal moment – if Swansea are still struggling then they could be very tempted to accept an offer as it's their final chance to do so, but it would most definitely hurt their fans should he leave the club.

Southampton linked with transfer move for Fabio Carvalho

So far this season, Southampton have only managed to pick up a total of four points from their opening seven Premier League games of the campaign from four draws, having failed to secure their first win of the season.

In addition to this, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side have also only managed to score five goals in those seven games, which suggests to us that they have not been particularly strong in an attacking sense yet, which has been a problem for the given how they are currently sat in 17th place in the league table just one place above the relegation zone.

However, it seems as though the club have their eye on signing a new attacking talent to add to their squad.

What's the latest?

It has recently been reported by TEAMtalk that Southampton are eyeing up a move for Fulham attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho in the upcoming January transfer window.

He's at a contract impasse with his current club which has allowed a variety of Premier League sides to monitor his services.

The talented teenager has lit up the Championship so far this term and it would not be a surprise if he made a move away from Craven Cottage.

Potential solution

Carvalho, who is a product of Fulham's youth academy, made his senior debut for the west London club back in September 2020 in a Carabao Cup victory over Sheffield Wednesday under former Fulham manager Scott Parker.

The boss once described the 19-year-old as a "massive positive" for the club, hailing him as "really bright," in a glowing review.

Overall, the teenager has made just 11 senior appearances for Fulham, scoring four goals and providing one assist in the process.

His assist and three of his four senior goals for Fulham have come during the five Championship appearances he's made for the club this season. That's impressively earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.59/10, making him Fulham's second-highest rated player according to WhoScored, which shows why he has apparently caught Southampton's eye.

In addition to this, the fact that only Adam Armstrong (3) out of everyone in the Southampton squad has made more shots at goal per game so far this season than Carvalho (2.4) at Fulham shows that he could well be a good attacking option for Hasenhuttl should they sign him in January.

The Saints have struggled for goals this season, netting only five times in seven outings. Consequently, a player of the youngster's stature and qualities could help Hasenhuttl correct that issue.

The Austrian already has a variety of talented young players coming through his ranks and Carvalho would be somebody to get excited about, particularly if he scores on a regular basis.

In terms of a potential move to Southampton in January, we feel that the Saints should definitely explore deal. He could definitely help freshen up Southampton's rather stale attacking force, which hasn't really helped the team so far this season.

Opinion: Marco Silva must consider sanctioning temporary exit for this Fulham man in January

After suffering relegation from the Premier League earlier this year, it was always going to be intriguing to see how Fulham would fare in the Championship during the opening stages of the 2021/22 campaign.

Having opted to appoint Marco Silva as Scott Parker's replacement in July, the Cottagers initially made a positive start to the current term as they won four of their opening five league games.

As well as showing an abundance of creativity in these particular fixtures, Fulham were relatively impressive in a defensive sense as they only conceded three goals.

However, since this particular run of results, the Cottagers have struggled for consistency in the Championship as they have dropped points against Blackpool, Reading, Bristol City and Coventry City.

Particularly poor against the Sky Blues earlier this month, Silva's side capitulated in the second-half of this particular showdown as their opponents sealed a 4-1 victory.

When you consider that Fulham will be looking to challenge for promotion this season, it would be somewhat of a shock if they don't deliver a response to this recent setback in their showdown with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Silva may consider making some alterations to his team for this game as he looks to lead his side to victory in-front of the club's supporters.

One of the individuals who is unlikely to make the match-day squad for this fixture is Steven Sessegnon who has yet to make a senior appearance for the Cottagers this season.

Used exclusively by the club at youth level, the right-back has featured on three occasions in the Premier League 2 Division 2 in recent months.

Currently behind the likes of Dennis Odoi, Kenny Tete and Cyrus Christie in the pecking order at Fulham, Sessegnon may be forced to watch on from the sidelines for the foreseeable future if he stays at Craven Cottage.

Whilst it would be naïve to suggest that Fulham should sell one of their most exciting prospects in the upcoming transfer window, Silva ought to consider sanctioning a temporary move for Sessegnon in January.

By featuring on a regular basis for a club in a lower division, the right-back will gain some invaluable experience that Under-23 football is simply unable to provide for a young player.

If Sessegnon is able to make considerable strides in terms of his development next year, there is no reason why he cannot potentially force his way into contention for a place in Fulham's starting eleven when he returns to the club.

By keeping an eye on the 21-year-old's progress from afar, Silva could potentially make a decision about Sessegnon's long-term future at the club as he does have the option to extend the defender's stay until 2023.

USMNT's Weston McKennie, Antonee Robinson to be assessed ahead of Costa Rica

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- United States coach Gregg Berhalter said that both midfielder Weston McKennie and left-back Antonee Robinson will undergo fitness tests later on Tuesday to see if they will be able to play in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

"Right now, we don't have enough information to make that decision," Berhalter said at Tuesday's pre-match video call.

McKennie didn't even travel to Panama for Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Canaleros due to a quadricep injury he picked up in the previous match against Jamaica. He instead traveled ahead to Columbus to get further treatment.

"He pushed it a little bit yesterday, and the signs are he's making progress," said Berhalter about McKennie. "But we'll have to see today in training."

Robinson joined McKennie in traveling early to Columbus as well. Initially Robinson's absence was explained as a desire to minimize the effects of quarantine rules in the U.K., where Panama remains a red-list country.

But during Tuesday's call, Robinson mentioned that he has also been dealing with "a little issue with my knee" and that he's been receiving treatment for it since the Jamaica game. He sounded optimistic about his recovery.

"I've had the chance to recover and get myself back in shape for the next game," he said.

The U.S. will face a Costa Rica side that heavy in experience, with goalkeeper Keylor Navas, midfielder Celso Borges and midfielder Bryan Ruiz all on the roster. And yesterday it was announced that 39-year-old striker Alvaro Saborio and 37-year-old midfielder Christian Bolaños would be added to the roster. Forward Joel Campbell will miss due to a sprained right ankle. Costa Rica has earned six points from their first five games, putting them in fifth place, but just two points behind the U.S.

"This is a group that's been together for a long time, and there's certainly strengthen in that, and there's certainly an advantage to that," said Berhalter about Costa Rica. "For us, it's just the opposite. We're a young, up-and-coming team, and we have to use that to our advantage."

The U.S. will attempt to bounce back from the woeful performance against Panama, one in which the U.S. failed to register a single shot on goal.

"We missed an opportunity to get, at minimum, a point in that game. And that's something that we regret and we're disappointed with," he said. "For us, it's about getting back to what we do well, and that's movement off the ball. Everything we talked about pre-Jamaica game is exactly what's back on the stage now."

That said, Berhalter made clear he didn't regret his choice of lineup, one that featured seven changes from the Jamaica game, and overall failed to offer much threat going forward.

"We believe in every single player in this squad, and I don't regret in any moment playing that lineup," he said. "I regret more our performance, and some of the attacking adjustments we could have made in that game to be more mobile, to be moving more, but not personnel."

Regarding our top five performers I would go along with Mitro, Carvalho and Tosin but I really think Robinson and Wilson have underperformed in recent games and have to accept part responsibility for our poor results.

I think if you lose 4-1 to Coventry despite being 1-0 up at half time, that has to go down to management. There's been inconsistency in our performances this season and given the quality in the squad and some of the performances the difference between us doing well and doing that poorly shouldn't really exist. Games should either be tight affairs or us doing teams over.. I put that down to poor management. Not managing players, squad and their expectations and setting the team up poorly.

We made too many key changes against Coventry and whilst I don't know what silva said at half time, the players should've been prepared for Coventry and able to deal with them..

Gazzaniga needs to be dropped that's one I've made my mind up on though, he's been poor for us all season so far and could've saved more than he has.
