Tete needs to win his place back, says Silva

Marco Silva insists that fit-again Kenny Tete will not walk straight back into his Fulham side.

The Dutch defender, absent since injuring his hamstring in the 2-0 win over Hull City back in August, resumed full training with his team-mates during the international break and Silva confirmed that Tete will be available for selection against Cardiff City at Craven Cottage tonight. But the Fulham boss believes he is spoilt for choice at right back after Denis Odoi deputised for Tete successfully.

"It's a very good fight between him, Kenny and Christie, and Kenny has to show he is better than the others. It's what Kenny is trying to do, and for sure, Denis will do the same. Kenny has shown he's now ready to play, and I will take the decision for each match.

"I think Denis is improving and he had a very good first game against Stoke. Of course, there were some ups and downs like the team. But Denis is a very good professional that allows him to work every single day really hard. I know every training session and every match day he gives 100%."

Robinson starts: The predicted Fulham XI to face Cardiff City tonight

Fulham take on lowly Cardiff City this evening at Craven Cottage in the Sky Bet Championship as they look to build on their win over Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

A couple of quick-fire goals in the second half on Saturday helped the Cottagers to all three points against the Hoops and now they'll be looking to put away a Bluebirds side that is going through a particularly tough patch in terms of form.

Marco Silva will look to name a strong side this evening, then, and it could look something like this:

Ivan Cavaleiro, Fabio Carvalho and Joe Bryan are all missing through injury so we could see the likes of Bobby Decordova-Reid and Antonee Robinson in from the start.

Marek Rodak is also on course to keep his spot in the side in between the sticks, whilst in midfield Harrison Reed and Jean Michael Seri may well keep their positions, though Josh Onomah will be pushing hard to get back involved.

Kenny Tete isn't far away from a return, meanwhile, but isn't yet ready to feature from the start and so Denis Odoi keeps his place.

Colwill starts: The predicted Cardiff City XI to face Fulham tonight

Many people expected to see Mick McCarthy given his marching orders after Cardiff City's 3-0 defeat to Swansea City in the South Wales derby on Sunday but he remains in charge ahead of tonight's game against Fulham.

The Bluebirds have lost six in a row in the Championship – scoring just once and conceding 15 times – and now find themselves teetering just above the relegation zone.

As if things couldn't get any worse, they now travel to Craven Cottage to face a Fulham side high in confidence after their 4-1 west London derby win on Saturday.

No side has scored more goals at home this season than the Cottagers, so it looks set to be a difficult evening for Cardiff.

With that in mind, we've highlighted the XI that we believe McCarthy will name for the trip to the English capital...

It's not been an easy time to be Cardiff's number one as of late but Alex Smithies looks likely to retain the jersey for the game this evening.

There may, however, be a change in front of him with McCarthy expected to move away from the back 3/5 that contributed to Sunday's disastrous display.

A back four of Joel Bagan, Aden Flint, Sean Morrison, and Perry Ng could well start, with Tom Sang still missing due to injury.

Marlon Pack and Joe Ralls look to have their work cut out for them in holding midfield against Fulham given the quality of the options available to Silva in that area.

Assuming Leandro Bacuna recovers from the knock he suffered against Swansea on Sunday, he is likely to play in the centre of the attacking midfield three with Ryan Giles and Rubin Colwill on either side.

Kieffer Moore was starved of service against the Swans but will know that he'll need to make the most of any chances that come his way tonight if Cardiff are to end their long losing run.

Fulham: Fans erupt as club drop six-word message involving Jean Michael Seri

Flocking to Twitter, many Fulham fans have erupted over their side's six-word message involving Jean Michael Seri.

Marco Silva's men, looking to bounce straight back to the English top flight after being relegated last season, have certainly made a brilliant start – currently sitting third and well in contention for an automatic spot.

The Cottagers have many players to thank for their start to the Championship campaign but one of the main men is arguably Seri.

Starting 10/12 second tier games under Silva, the 30-year-old has been a composed and assured figure in the middle of the park – averaging the highest pass accuracy (89.1%) out of any Fulham player who's played more than 90 minutes (WhoScored).

Now, in recognition of his fine form, Fulham have dropped the six-word message 'Ladies and gentlemen...Jean Michaël Seri' whilst sharing an exclusive interview with the midfield man.

Indeed, Seri shared his gratitude for the backing of Fulham fans with many erupting in response.

Some are even overjoyed that they 'finally' get to hear more from the player.

Mick McCarthy's Cardiff City Future Hangs By A Thread. . .As Bluebirds Hope To End Worst Run Since 1985 Against Fulham

Under-fire Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy will be hoping to halt an alarming run of six straight Championship defeats, when his side travel to Craven Cottage to face third place Fulham this evening (Wednesday).

This is Cardiff's worst league return since 1985 and the fans are stunned that the veteran boss is yet to receive his marching orders.

Former Cardiff players, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Harry Wilson now play their football at Fulham and could inflict further pain on their former club tonight.

Reid and Wilson both have the creativity that this Cardiff team are desperately crying out for and this could prove to be the decisive difference between the two teams.

The board may not have issued him with an ultimatum ahead of the South Wales derby on Sunday, but it is understood they have put their foot down this week.

The 3-0 defeat in Swansea has reportedly now left McCarthy with two games to save his job.

The fans have turned on him, chanting 'you're getting sacked in the morning' during the Bluebirds 4-0 defeat to West Brom, and he will need all the experience of his 1,000+ games in management to stay afloat.

Before the game at Swansea he was pretty matter of fact about his position, underlining the fact he fully understand "the rules of engagement".

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has already been more tolerant that in the past with him.

Neil Harris went after a run of six successive defeats last year and Warnock departed under his own steam after only one win in six games in November 2019. Prior to that Paul Trollope left after six defeats in seven games.

"I'll keep doing the job and keep trying to get the results. Let's hope on Wednesday it goes in our favour," said McCarthy.

"Fulham are one of the best teams in the league, but then this league throws up some strange results. All we can do is stick together.

"Conceding at one end and not scoring at the other is not a good recipe for success."

Cardiff have conceded 15 goals in their run of six losses and have scored only once. That has seen them drop to 20th in the Championship table and left them three points away from the relegation zone.

If this dismal run continues, it could be former Cardiff manager Neil Warnock who delivers the fatal blow to McCarthy's spell in charge.

Ironically, 44 years ago McCarthy was cleaning Warnock's boots whilst playing as an apprentice at Barnsley, but it could turn out to be Warnock who gives McCarthy the boot this weekend.

Marco Silva sends message to Fulham's Kenny Tete amid return to fitness

Fulham boss Marco Silva has told Kenny Tete to show he is "better than the others" as he bids to return to the starting XI following a spell out through injury.

Tete, 26, has been absent from Fulham's squad since suffering a thigh injury in the 2-0 win over Hull City back in August.

Since then, long-serving defender Denis Odoi has made the starting spot at right-back his own. The Belgian has played eight times in the Championship so far, netting one goal and providing two assists in the process.

Now, with Tete returning to fitness, the battle for a place in the starting XI looks set to heat up.

Competition for a starting spot is something manager Marco Silva will be happy to see, as it can help bring out the best in players.

That is exactly what Silva is hoping happens with Tete, telling the Dutchman to show he is better than the other options at right-back in a bid to come back into the side.

As quoted by West London Sport, here's what Silva had to say:

"It's a very good fight between him (Odoi), Kenny and (Cyrus) Christie, and Kenny has to show he is better than the others.

"It's what Kenny is trying to do, and for sure, Denis will do the same. Kenny has shown he's now ready to play, and I will take the decision for each match.

"I think Denis is improving and he had a very good first game against Stoke. Of course, there were some ups and downs like the team. But Denis is a very good professional that allows him to work every single day really hard.

"I know every training session and every match day he gives 100%."

Up next for the Cottagers

Fulham face Cardiff City on Wednesday night, so it will be interesting to see who starts on the right-hand side of Marco Silva's backline.

As Silva said, Odoi has put in some strong performances at right-back, but Tete has been the go-to man when fit, successfully holding down the starting spot in the Premier League as well, with only injury keeping him out for much of the season.

Marco Silva reveals the state of play as Fulham player eyes return

Fulham defender Kenny Tete has been absent from the side since way back in August and boss Marco Silva has today told West London Sport that he will have to 'show he is better than the others' to get back in the team.

Dennis Odoi is currently the go-to right-back at the club and has put in a series of solid showings for the Cottagers since being given the chance to fill in. With one goal and two assists to his name so far, Silva will be in no rush to drop the 33-year-old anytime soon.

The Belgian has proven to be a reliable face for Fulham and is proving that he is more than up to task in the second tier. He wasn't the original first-choice though, as Tete was initially preferred in his position when the season began.

The 26-year-old had started every game earlier on in the campaign and had looked bright when doing so. However, the player was unfortunate to suffer an injury early on and it's meant that he's had to sit on the sidelines ever since.

Tete though could be back in contention for a spot soon – but boss Marco Silva has warned him that he may not be able to walk straight back into the starting eleven and that he may have some competition on his hands for that right-back spot.

Speaking to West London Sport, he said: "It's a very good fight between him, Kenny and [Cyrus] Christie, and Kenny has to show he is better than the others. It's what Kenny is trying to do, and for sure, Denis will do the same.

"Kenny has shown he's now ready to play, and I will take the decision for each match."

Tete then might not find it as straightforward to get gametime upon his return from injury – and with Dennis Odoi in fine form for the Cottagers, both will be desperate to make that starting spot their own.

The Verdict

Kenny Tete has looked sharp when given the chance to play for Fulham and he was looking like a solid face at the back for the club before his injury. If he can find similar form when he returns, then he will surely remain as their first-choice.

Odoi though has stepped in admirably and made things difficult for Marco Silva, albeit in a good way. It's never a bad thing to have a multitude of options available to you and it shows that the club are currently very strong in that area.

It'll be a plus point going forward for them too, as a 46 game Championship season often requires a fair amount of rotation if you want to compete at the top end of the table.
