3 things we clearly learnt about Fulham after 4-0 win v Forest

Fulham responded to Bournemouth and West Brom's respective wins in style on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The Lilywhites have motored on since the international break with three straight wins – as well as two clean sheets and ten goals scored – and they look in really good stroke at the moment.

Certainly, it's been a promising few weeks for Fulham who now sit second in the league table as they look to hunt down AFC Bournemouth, and this is what we have learned about the Lilywhites from their win over Forest...

Midfield selection scrap intensifies
Tom Cairney was back with a bang against Cardiff as he came on at half-time and broke the deadlock and yesterday saw a further nod at how Marco Silva looks set to use him this year.

He started from the off with Harrison Reed coming out of the side and he and Jean Michael Seri were the midfield two.

The quality in the middle of the park Fulham have is incredible and the fight for a start has just got that bit harder.

Right-side back to full strength
In other positive injury recovery news, we saw Kenny Tete return to the side as he came on for Denis Odoi.

Odoi has done well this season in place of Tete who was injured in the early stages of the season and it's now another area where Fulham have good competition.

Kete is a really good full-back and to now have him back available makes Fulham even stronger.

Fulham's best front four?
Fabio Carvalho is a fine player but he has been missing a lot for various reasons and in his absence it could be fair to say Marco Silva has now found a front four that is his strongest.

Ivan Cavaleiro will want something to say about that but the quartet of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Neeskens Kebano, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Harry Wilson was at its best on Sunday and they've shown time and again how well they can all link up.

Talking Points: Forest

Free-scoring Fulham

Putting four past Nottingham Forest saw Fulham take our tally of goals for the season to 33 – an impressive return from just 14 matches. No team in the top four divisions has found the back of the net more frequently, with League One Ipswich Town coming closest to our total with 29 goals, ahead of Liverpool and Harrogate Town who have scored 27 each.

Mitro's Midas touch

Aleksandar Mitrović cannot stop scoring at the moment, with five goals in his last three matches putting him on 15 goals for the season. For context, nobody else in the country has scored more than 10. It seems that everything the big man touches is going in at the moment, as was evident with his first on Sunday which was effectively a tackle!

90 in the bank for TC

Tom Cairney built on his brilliant substitute appearance against Cardiff City with a highly productive 90 minutes at the City Ground. Playing alongside the excellent Jean Michaël Seri, our Captain had to help out defensively throughout the contest, something he did willingly and effectively. A first 90 minutes under his belt since our 1-0 defeat away to West Ham United almost a year ago, which will have done TC the world of good.

Kenny's return

Kenny Tete's appearance on the bench in midweek gave everyone a massive boost, so it was great to see him return to action on Sunday. With the game won, Marco Silva withdrew Denis Odoi in the 77th minute, to allow the Dutchman to get some valuable match fitness.

Nine days, nine points

With Fulham having the international break to stew over the defeat at Coventry City, it's been fantastic to see the response provided by Marco and his team. Matches against QPR, Cardiff and Forest in the space of nine days could have been a tricky run, but we've blown everyone away, scoring 10 times and conceding just once in the process.

Club seemingly regret not completing summer move for Fulham player

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa has lit up Serie A this season since making the move to Napoli on a short-term basis, with the club currently sitting comfortably in first place – and it's led to divisional rivals AS Roma being filled with regret over not completing a deal for the player themselves in summer, according to Corrierre Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

The Italian side – led by former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho – were on the hunt for recruits over summer to try and ensure the club could challenge at the top end of the Serie A table this year.

One of the names they turned to was Anguissa, who had racked up 36 appearances in the Premier League for Fulham in the previous season and had remained with the club despite their demotion to the second tier.

Mourinho fancied bringing the 25-year-old to the club to help shore up his midfield and to use his experience of top flight football to help in their battle for the title in Italy. The player did end up making the move to Serie A – but not to Roma. Instead, he decided to make the short-term move to Napoli and has so far flourished in the side.

He most recently put in a strong showing in the centre of the field against Mourinho's men in a 0-0 draw. During the tie, he won more duels than any other player on the field and completed more dribbles than anybody else too – and was a large reason as to why his side picked up another valuable point.

Now, reports from Corrierre Dello Sport (via Sport Witness) in Italy claim that Roma do in fact have 'growing regrets 'over not being able to land the player themselves in summer. With Anguissa performing so well in his seven Serie A games so far, it's easy to see why the club are so distraught to not have brought the midfielder in themselves.

Fulham themselves must be harbouring some regret over not being able to keep Anguissa at the club. He looked sharp when he played for the Cottagers at the beginning of the year and he has continued to thrive in Italy.

Roma will no doubt be keeping tabs on his performances and may hope they can eventually lure him to the side in the future, while Fulham may also be holding out hope of their own that a return to the top flight this year may convince Anguissa to stay on with them when his loan comes to an end at Napoli.

The Verdict

Anguissa has looked impressive since completing his move to Italy and already made himself a regular in the Napoli team. The fact that he is competing at such a high level right now – and helping the Italian side reach the summit of the league table – speaks volumes about his ability as a midfielder.

It comes as no shock then that Roma are regretful that they couldn't work out a deal for Anguissa. With his performances going from strength-to-strength for Napoli, interest in his services will widen too, meaning even less of a chance of Roma tying him down to a deal after his loan spell if there are so many interested parties.

Marco Silva sends clear message to Domingos Quina amid disappointing Fulham spell

Marco Silva says that Domingos Quina "has to work harder" if he is to reclaim a place in the Fulham squad.

Quina joined Fulham on a season-long loan deal from Watford on deadline day, signing a new deal at Vicarage Road until 2024 before doing so.

Fulham have an option to purchase the midfielder at the end of his loan spell if they wish to do so, but at the moment, he is out of favour.

Quina hasn't featured for Fulham since the away win over Birmingham in September, where he came on as a substitute in a 4-1 win.

He has been left out of the matchday squad for the last three Championship matches, too, and was nowhere to be seen in Sunday's 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to West London Sport, Silva said that Quina must work harder if he is to work his way back into his plans.

He said: "Domingos has to work harder to win back his place."

"He got his chance and that is clear by getting in the starting 11 against Leeds and Blackpool, and it was not just a matter of performance, but in the training sessions as well.

"He is fit, but was not in the squad the last game – a technical decision and it was mine."

The Verdict

Quina is a player with real pedigree, but at the moment, he isn't making an impact.

Your work ethic needs to be spot on if you're sent out on loan, because ultimately, you're trying to impress your parent club from afar.

But what message does it send if he isn't even being named in a matchday squad? He needs to take Silva's advice and work harder, it seems.

'A class above the rest' – Will Bournemouth, Fulham and West Brom pull clear of the chasing pack?

Parachute payments are an advantage particularly in the post-pandemic climate in the Championship, but the trio at the top of the division right now are not showing any signs of a drop-off and may well finish as they are.

West Bromwich Albion and Fulham have experienced some ups and downs this term where Bournemouth have been untouchable and the trio look menacing to the rest of the division. There is a four point gap between fourth placed Coventry City and the Baggies in third, a difference that could only widen as the season progress.

With concerns that Hull City, Barnsley and Derby County could get cut adrift at the bottom of the division, Bournemouth, Fulham and West Brom could run away with it at the top end.

Stoke City and Sheffield United have shown in glimpses that they have the capabilities to challenge in and around the top two and stand out in terms of the depth of their respective squads. However, with West Brom in third seven points clear of Stoke and ten ahead of the Blades, the chasm is widening.

FLW writer Billy Mulley had his say on the state of affairs when he appeared on the Weekend Review on FLW TV.

Billy Mulley said: "Bournemouth, Fulham and West Brom, they do seem a class above the rest of the division at the moment. Fulham and West Brom have shown little inconsistencies but at the same time they've got the squad, they've got the firepower and they've got the defensive resilience.

"As long as they can gain some consistency then I can't really see anyone disrupting that top three."

The Cherries have somehow improved despite the loss of Arnaut Danjuma and are five points clear at the top of the table. There were concerns over the appointment of Scott Parker having been relegated with a whimper last season but the South Coast club are setting the benchmark for Fulham and West Brom to chase.

Marco Silva at Fulham: How's it gone so far? What issues does he face? What's next?

Fulham made somewhat of a coup appointment this summer with the arrival of Marco Silva as the club's new head coach.

The Portuguese man has managed in the Premier League with Everton, Watford and Hull City but after being unemployed for over a year after his sacking from the Toffees, he returned to management in west London.

With Scott Parker departing, Silva walked into a job knowing that he had one of the better squads on paper in the whole league to coach, even if a few players did depart before the transfer window closed.

Let's look at his time at Craven Cottage so far and also look at what he has to contend with in the coming months.

How's it gone so far?

There was a bit of a blip in September, but Fulham appear to be back on track.

The Cottagers had a strong start to the campaign after going unbeaten in August and the talented teenager Fabio Carvalho emerged as a real starlet, but his injury coincided with an inconsistent run of form between the two international breaks.

In that period, Fulham won two, drew one and lost three games which included a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Coventry City, which could have meant that trouble was on the horizon.

The last three matches though have been a real improvement – wins over QPR, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest with an aggregate scoreline of 10-1 are a sign that the Fulham who should be dominating the division are back.

What issues does he face?

Injuries of course could creep in at any time – we've seen Carvalho on the sidelines for a good month or so now and if someone like an Aleksandar Mitrovic gets struck down – a man who has scored 15 times in 14 games – then they could struggle.

We also saw some frailties at the back last month and against Coventry – going forward they look dangerous all the time but they made some silly mistakes in their losses and they need to be rectified.

The good thing about the Cottagers though is that they will always have enough firepower to try and outscore teams so they should have no issues with keeping up the pace with high-flying Bournemouth.

What's next?

After a tough test this weekend against West Brom, Fulham have some favourable fixtures coming up against the likes of Blackburn, Peterborough, Barnsley, Derby County and Preston North End before facing the Cherries at Craven Cottage.

You'd expect that on paper they will win the majority of those games if they continue their fine form but as we know with the Championship – nothing is that straight-forward.

The goalscoring of Mitrovic also presents an issue in regards to the January transfer window – that will occur in two months time and the vultures could be circling for the Serb, who is tied down to a long-term deal but if big offers come in, will the Khan family be tempted to sell?
