Exclusive: Liverpool monitoring Fulham player as contract saga continues

Liverpool are beginning to look at Fabio Carvalho and his situation at Fulham as the player's contract situation drags on, Football League World can reveal exclusively.

The attacking midfielder has been missing since the early stages of the season with an injury and covid and in that time we've also seen a lot written about his contract and whether he is going to sign a new one.

Fulham have been fairly confident that eventually they would find a resolution that would keep the player at Craven Cottage but, as yet, he is still to sign a new deal and with his current one up at the end of this campaign there is natural concern among those connected with the club that he could end up leaving next summer.

Indeed, with his talent, there are plenty of sides taking a look at him and Premier League club Liverpool are now monitoring the situation, Football League World can reveal exclusively.

The Reds, of course, signed Harvey Elliott from Fulham not so long ago and may be looking to repeat the feat with Carvalho, with Elliott earning plenty of first-team minutes at the start of this campaign before picking up a nasty injury against Leeds United.

Tom Cairney reveals what makes Fulham 'special'

Tom Cairney joined Fulham in the summer of 2015 and has been through a lot in the six and a quarter seasons that have followed.

The 30-year-old was restored to the starting XI and with the captain's armband on his arm in the club's 4-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and he clearly knows what it means to play for the Cottagers.

Only managing ten appearances in the Premier League last season due to injury would have been a crushing blow for the Scotsman who will be even more determined to take the club back there for the third time in his career.

Cairney was asked what makes Fulham special when he spoke on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast.

He said: "I think it's an amazing family club. I think it's a beautiful stadium, I know it's not the biggest but the history of it and since I've been born really it's always been a Premier League club and had big players.

"I don't think anyone hates Fulham. Fulham's always tried to do the right thing."

It means a lot to a club's fan base to have a player who understands what it means to wear the shirt especially in taking the captain's armband, Cairney embodies that on the pitch.

The Verdict

It has been a rollercoaster since Cairney made the move from Blackburn Rovers, earning promotion to the top-flight twice via the play-offs with his goal proving the winner against Aston Villa in the 2018 play-off final. There is fierce competition for places at Fulham at the moment and Harrison Reed can feel quite unfortunate to have been dropped for Cairney at the weekend.

The leadership the Scotsman provides from central areas and the experience of achieving promotion before could be invaluable in their push this season.

Marco Silva is new to the level but has not hesitated to get Cairney back out on the pitch with the captain's armband on and will be hoping the club can pull away from the chasing pack and remain in the top two in the coming months.

How is Marcus Bettinelli getting on since leaving Fulham for Chelsea?

As a product of the Fulham academy system, Marcus Bettinelli's decision to join Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer is unlikely to have been too popular among the Craven Cottage faithful.

In the midst of his outstanding form late in the 2017/18 season as the goalkeeper helped the west London club secure promotion via the Championship play-offs and early in the following campaign when he found himself in the England squad, it would have been hard to imagine Bettinelli's Fulham career petering out as it has.

But injuries, his own drop in form, the rise of Marek Rodak, and the arrival of some top-quality shot-stoppers at Craven Cottage all played a part in the struggles that eventually led to his summer exit.

Fulham academy product or not, a move to Chelsea is a hard one to turn down and it was no surprise to see him go once the offer was there.

The 29-year-old will likely remain confident that when his time comes, he can grab hold of it with both hands and prove to Thomas Tuchel he is good enough to feature for the Blues but that's not come yet and for the time being he remains behind both Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the squad.

So far Bettinelli has been part of matchday squads in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the EFL Cup without making a senior appearance for his new club.

And it seems he's working hard in training as well, but that first appearance hasn't come yet...

You'd imagine most Fulham fans will be pleased to see he's not yet thriving at one of their main rivals.

Tom Cairney reveals who is Fulham's most clever player

Tom Cairney revealed a lot about the ins and outs of the Fulham dressing room when he spoke on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast.

The Cottagers have won both of their matches since Cairney made his long awaited return from injury and have pushed themselves back into the automatic promotion places as a result.

When asked by Jonathan Oakes who Fulham's most clever player is, Cairney said:

"Dennis Odoi because he can speak about 19 languages. He helps a lot of the French, Belgian (players), I think he knows Spanish as well so he's amazing."

Probably a slight exaggeration on the ballpark figure of how many languages Odoi knows but that is a great insight into the Fulham dressing room with such a diverse group of players.

Jean Michael Seri returned to the club this summer, with Domingos Quina and Rodrigo Muniz arriving with foreign backgrounds. Odoi's ability to integrate them back into the squad in pre-season and to help build relationships on the pitch could be crucial in creating squad harmony and cohesion.

Kenny Tete made his return from injury from the bench to replace Odoi in Saturday's 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest and the coming weeks will show us where Marco Silva ranks the pair of them in vying for the right back berth.

The Verdict

Odoi has been a good servant for the club amidst some topsy-turvy years since signing from Lokeren in the summer of 2016. The Cottagers are always busy in the transfer window and this summer was no different, Odoi's role off the pitch gives his place in the squad a lot more importance and should pay dividends as the season progresses.

Seri in particular has been very impressive back with the Cottagers in the first quarter of the season, and Odoi's role helping him with the language barrier could have been the difference between the Ivorian staying for the Championship promotion race or heading back out on loan for another season.

EFL trio make the Football Black List 2021

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore, Fulham defender Cyrus Christie and Queens Park Rangers coach Paul Hall feature on the Football Black List 2021.

The initiative, which shines a light on the most influential Black people in British football, was founded in 2008 by sports journalists Leon Mann and Rodney Hinds to highlight leaders working across all areas of the game from the Black community.

The Football Black List covers eight individual categories: Administration, Coaching and Management, Commercial, Community, Players, LGBTQ+, Media, and Practitioners.

A panel of experts from the football industry and Black community vote independently on nominations made by the public to determine who makes the list. The panel included representation from the Premier League, The Football Association, Professional Footballers' Association, League Managers Association, English Football League, PGMOL, Sport England, BCOMS and Kick It Out.

"Black excellence in football is regularly talked about on the pitch - and we want to help highlight the contribution of Black leaders off the field in the sport, too," said Leon Mann MBE, Co-Founder of the Football Black List, upon the announcement.

"This list of influential game changers is a snapshot of the contribution Black communities are making to football. Those named today join an illustrious group who have featured on the list over the last decade - including the likes of Raheem Sterling, Ian Wright, Hope Powell, Rio Ferdinand, Herman Ouseley and Rachel Yankey."

The list was revealed today at the National Football Museum in Manchester a week after Walter Tull, the world's first Black professional footballer, was named in the football Hall of Fame.

Wednesday manager Moore, one of the EFL's Black History Month champions, was appointed as Owls boss earlier in March from Doncaster Rovers. Having enjoyed an illustrious playing career, the 47-year-old won promotions from the EFL with West Bromwich Albion - who handed him his first managerial start - and Derby County.

Similarly, Hall, the current Under-23s coach at QPR, hung up his boots in 2001 on the back of a 20-year playing career, which included a promotion with Walsall and further Play-Off memories with Rushden & Diamonds.

Christie, on the other hand, joined Sky Bet Championship side Fulham in January 2018 from Middlesbrough. The Republic of Ireland international has also spent time on the Rams' books, after coming through the ranks at his hometown Club Coventry City.

Fulham's Tom Cairney makes Nottingham Forest admission

Tom Cairney returned to Championship action during Fulham's 2-0 victory over Cardiff City last Wednesday, after nearly a year out of competitive football.

The 30-year-old, who has returned to fitness within a side with exceptional midfield options, is a big boost for The Cottagers, as they push for promotion back to the Premier League.

Playing the second half, and opening the scoring against The Bluebirds last week, Cairney was tasked with his first start at the weekend, during a 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest.

It was a win that stopped Forest's winning run under Steve Cooper, further confirming why Fulham are expected to be automatic promotion contenders this year.

Speaking to Sky Sports via their EFL Podcast, Cairney was asked who he supported growing up: "Nottingham Forest.

"I was born in Nottingham and my dad was a big Forest fan, so that made me a Forest fan.

"When I scored at The City Ground, it was a big moment for him."

The verdict

It is excellent to see Cairney back on the pitch and playing a full 90, and he will be on cloud nine at the moment.

Despite his allegiances to Forest, he will be proud that he is back playing and that his team crushed to victory with him in the side.

Fulham have recruited some extremely talented midfielders in his absence, whilst the rise of Fabio Carvalho has also increased competition levels.

However, Cairney has proven to be a top performer at this level in the past and has a lot more to give one would think.

A move to Forest may be on the cards later in his career, but for now, he will be solely focussed on Fulham's ultimate ambition of returning to the Premier League.

Tom Cairney makes surprise Nottingham Forest admission following Fulham defeat

The Fulham midfielder made an interesting revelation about who he supported growing up

Tom Cairney has revealed that he grew up supporting Nottingham Forest after his Fulham side beat the Reds on Sunday.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes as Forest were thrashed 4-0 at the City Ground, condemning Steve Cooper to his first loss as Forest manager.

An own goal from Djed Spence put the Reds behind at the break but the contest remained fairly even, until an Aleksandar Mitrovic brace and a Neeskens Kebano strike in the space of nine minutes ensured the Cottagers of all three points.

The result leaves Forest 15th in the Championship table, while Fulham move up to second as the West London side look to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

One player who enjoyed the game more than most was Cairney, who was making his first start of the season after a lengthy period on the sidelines.

But the 30-year-old had another, less-known reason to feel proud, after he revealed he supported Forest as a child.

Speaking on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast on Monday, Cairney said: "I was born in Nottingham and my dad was a big Forest fan, so that made me a Forest fan.

Tom Cairney reveals who is 'not the brightest' player at Fulham

Recently-relegated side Fulham have enjoyed a reasonably successful start to the 2021/22 campaign, climbing into the automatic promotion spots recently in what looks set to be a very competitive campaign in the top half of the Championship table.

Rivals AFC Bournemouth are currently the team to beat having won 10 and drawn four of their opening 14 second-tier games, going unbeaten during that period with their 6-0 defeat against Norwich City in the Carabao Cup back at the end of August being their only competitive loss of the season so far.

They could have easily crumbled after that hammering, but secured a 0-0 draw away at Hull City to stabilise themselves before the first international break before coming out strong after that interval.

Fulham have a slightly less impressive record, having lost 2-1 at home to Reading and 4-1 away to Coventry City, but have managed to avoid frustrating draws for the most part and climbed into second place after West Bromwich Albion's defeat against Swansea City in midweek.

Three frustrating, consecutive draws for the Baggies against the likes of Millwall, Derby County and Preston North End last month, with all three arguably being winnable games on paper, has proved to be costly at this stage for Valerien Ismael's men as the Cottagers currently sit one point above the West Midlands outfit.

Marco Silva's men have key forward Aleksandar Mitrovic to thank for this achievement after seeing the 27-year-old score an exceptional 15 goals in 14 league games so far this season.

Tom Cairney has been slightly less complimentary about the Serbian international though!

Identifying a player who's not the brightest member of the Cottagers' squad, the midfielder jokingly said on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast: 'I'm going to say Aleksandar Mitrovic because he heads the ball too much! I think he's gone a bit punch-drunk. He knows where the goal is anyway."

The Verdict:

Not many people would make such an insult about someone of Mitrovic's 6'2 stature, so you have to commend Cairney's bravery for making that comment.

That's for the midfielder to deal to feel the effects of his comments in the dressing room though – because everyone else will continue to enjoy his performances!

Scoring 15 times already in just 14 league goals is a remarkable total and he could easily beat Ivan Toney's total of 31 if he can continue at a similar rate – and with both the service he has at his disposal and his finishing prowess – there's no reason why he can't.

Keeping him fit will be key though with the forward often going away with Serbia on international duty, because his availability could be the difference between staying in an automatic promotion spot and being displaced by West Brom.

Speaking of his home nation, you also have to commend him for being bilingual, something many people across the world are unable to master. Perhaps it's time for Mitrovic to test Cairney's Serbian language skills on camera as sweet revenge for these comments.
