Liverpool leading race to sign 19-year-old making waves in the Championship

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho

According to TEAM talk (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are believed to be the frontrunners in the race to sign 19-year-old Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho.

The teenager has come up through the ranks at Fulham and is attracting considerable interest from fellow English clubs. It is believed that Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Southampton are the frontrunners.

According to the Athletic (h/t Liverpool Echo), the young attacker has turned down a new contract to stay put at Craven Cottage. This has created an air of uncertainty and alerted several clubs to his availability.

Fabio Carvalho has been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs

The teenager has already scored four goals and provided one assist in 13 matches across all competitions for The Cottagers. The Reds have a great rapport with Fulham as Harvey Elliott also made his way from Craven Cottage to Anfield.

Elliott was starting to cement a regular place in the starting lineup for Liverpool but a horrific injury against Leeds United in their Premier League fixture this season could see him miss the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old Carvalho brings a certain versatility along with him, as he can be deployed as an attacking midfielder or winger. Jurgen Klopp could welcome some reinforcement in the attacking department.

Building for the future
In the last couple of seasons, The Reds have struggled with several injury issues. This along with the burdens of playing across several competitions can take its toll on the best of players. The German manager has always preferred to give young talented players an opportunity in domestic cup competitions. This has been a great launching pad for quality talent in the last few seasons.

Carvalho's addition could give the former Borussia Dortmund manager the option to rotate and preserve the fitness of key players. If nurtured properly the Portuguese-born player could be a great long-term asset for the club.

It is said that the Merseysiders are currently one of the top teams in contention and his addition could have a significant impact at Anfield. It could also help spruce up competition for attacking spots in the next couple of seasons if any deal were to take place.

Silva says Carvalho situation is 'not helpful'

Marco Silva says the continued uncertainty over Fabio Carvalho's future 'is not helpful' – and wants the talented teenager to be able to focus on his football.

Carvalho, who had missed nine matches following his electric start to the season before a pair of late substitute appearances against West Brom and Blackburn Rovers, has reportedly turned down Fulham's latest offer of a new contract. The attacking midfielder's current deal at Craven Cottage expires at the end of the season.

Silva, who reiterated after the stunning seven goal victory at Ewood Park that he wants to keep Carvalho at the club, told his press conference ahead of tomorrow's trip to Peterborough that he was unhappy at the current situation.

I'd like to see a talent like Fabio's with calmness, and not with these rumours around a 19-year-old, because that's not helpful for him, for sure. We have so many examples of this type of thing that happen in the wrong way, and players that disappear. I would not like to see more months and months until the end of the season.

But it's not something that's in our hands, and not just Fabio's, but somebody getting behind him, and I can't control it. I (hope) people who are advising him don't want to get just one shot; one contract and that will be the career of the player. He knows my position for him, not just for the club, but as a football player, and now I'm focused on him on the pitch, because the other things I cannot control.

Someone is having a laugh saying the reds have a great rapport with Fulham in respect Elliot. Absolutely rubbish, Liverpool stole him and then didn't want to pay anything for him and took it all the way to a tribunal. Hardly developing a great rapport. Then they take all the credit for developing the player as they did for Elliot despite him being only there for 2 seasons with 1 being out on loan.
If I was at Fulham Liverpool would be the last club I would sell him to.

Fulham U18s held to draw at West Ham

Fulham's under 18s were held to a goalless draw by West Ham in a dour London derby at Little Heath this morning.

Kevin Keen's young Hammers made the stronger start with the referee waving away penalty appeals for handball against Charlie Robinson. A brilliant set-piece delivery from Lewis Orford whistled right across the area before George Earthy was denied an opening goal by an offside flag. Earthy followed up after the recalled Alex Borto had saved Divin Mubama's free-kick, but was adjudged offside.

Borto thwarted Earthy again after an hour and centre back Kaelan Casey might have felt he should have done better than send a diving header wide when he had been left unattended at a corner. The Hammers were well on top and Gideon Kodua drove over after being found by a good Junior Robinson cross.

Fulham were grateful to remain level at the interval, but they almost went behind early in the second half when Kodua somehow fired over from close range after latching onto a low centre. Ali Melloul's side, which was virtually full strength apart from George Okkas who has already travelled to join up with Cyprus on international duty, gradually got a foothold in the game but it took until midway through the second period for them to create a clear chance. Luke Harris peeled away to reach Delano McCoy-Splatt's ball in but header over at the back post.

Harris looked the most likely source of a Fulham goal but the Welsh midfielder was denied a winner by a brilliant save from Jacob Knightbridge with twenty minutes to go. Winger Michael Olakigbe nearly benefitted from the blustery wind in the closing stages when his cross almost caught out the West Ham goalkeeper – but both sides had to settle for a point despite the late excitement.

WEST HAM UNITED UNDER 18s (3-5-2): Knightbridge; Tarima, Forbes (Falase 56), Casey; Robinson, Clayton, Earthy (Soglo 74), Orford, Scarles; Mubama, Kodua. Subs (not used): Evans.

BOOKED: Mubama.

FULHAM UNDER 18s (4-2-3-1): Borto; Tanton, de Fougerolles, Araujo, C. Robinson; McCoy-Splatt, Lanquedoc; Wildbore (Works 76), Olakigbe, Harris; Sanderson. Subs (not used): McNally, Antonsson, Caton, Parker.

BOOKED: McCoy-Splatt, Lanquedoc.
