Fulham: Remember Matthew Briggs? Here's what he's up to nowadays

A player who was once very highly thought of at Fulham, Matthew Briggs is a name that has fallen off the radar in more recent years.

The defender previously made the headlines for the Whites after becoming their youngest player to play in the Premier League at the time, aged just 16 years and 68 days, as he made his debut for the first team in May 2007.

Briggs would however go on to play just 30 times at senior level for the West London club before being shipped out on loan to various Football League clubs such as Leyton Orient, Peterborough United, Bristol City and Watford.

Fulham were then relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2013/14 season, with Briggs being subsequently released along with eight other players.

This led to the Wandsworth born full back joining another of the capital's clubs in Millwall.

It was with the Lions that he would once again struggle to make an impact and harness down a first team spot, making just 12 appearances as the club's then boss Ian Holloway chose to tinker with his starting eleven on numerous occasions.

This led to the defender taking on arguably what was the best spell of his career as he joined Colchester United on an initial loan deal before making the move permanent in 2015.

It was with the U's that the player would really go on to earn his stripes as he played 65 games over the course of three seasons, before having to undergo hip surgery which eventually led to his release in the summer of 2017.

Short spells in non league with the likes of Chesterfield, Barnet and Maldon & Tiptree then followed as the defender failed to really settle until eventually he took the eye catching decision to move to Denmark with HB Køge.

He would go on to make just 17 appearances for the club before seeing his contract terminated as he moved on yet again, this time ending up back in England with another non league side in the form of Dartford.

However old habits prevailed and he only played a handful of games for the club before returning to Danish soil to turn out for Vejle BK.

Five appearances followed before his contract was terminated, with Briggs now turning out for Gosport Borough in the Southern League Premier Division South.

A player who promised so much but all in all has delivered very little, many a Fulham fan will be wondering where it all went wrong for Matthew Briggs.

3 things we clearly learnt about Fulham after their 1-0 win over Peterborough

Fulham finished off the latest portion of Sky Bet Championship fixtures before the international break with a 1-0 win at Peterborough United on Saturday, making it six wins on the bounce.

The Lilywhites have been in great form since the October set of internationals and it currently looks like it'll be them and Bournemouth battling it out for the title this season in the second tier.

Of course, there's still lots of work to be done before the trophies are handed out but Fulham do look good, and now we're taking a look what we learned from their latest victory...

Settled front four
Fabio Carvalho is now back in contention for Fulham but it looks as though he might have to remain content with a spot on the bench for now.

Fulham's front four of Neeskens Kebano, Harry Wilson, Bobby Decordova-Reid and, of course, Aleksandar Mitrovic has gelled brilliantly and in recent weeks has put every side in front of them to the sword.

Right now, there's no need to change that.

Tete to return to starting XI soon?
Kenny Tete has returned from injury in recent weeks to make appearances off of the bench and it might not be so long until we see him back in the starting XI once the international break is over.

He came on for a decent period of the game against Peterborough at the weekend as Marco Silva begins to up his minutes and you can certainly see that increasing later this month when the club game resumes.

Fulham can win ugly too
Fulham have blown most of their opponents away in recent weeks and would have hoped for the same against Peterborough but the Posh proved stubborn and certainly gave the Whites a lot to think about.

Marek Rodak had a great game to preserve a clean sheet whilst Fulham eventually found a way to win as Mitrovic found the back of the net.

These are the games you look back on as important moments in a promotion-winning season far more than a 7-0 win as was recorded at Blackburn.

Exclusive: Crystal Palace chase for Fulham star could be halted as player eyes different move

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa's happiness at Napoli could scupper Crystal Palace's hopes of signing him from Fulham next summer, Football League World has been told exclusively.

The midfielder remains on the books at Craven Cottage but sealed an expected loan switch to Serie A side Napoli in the summer window earlier this year, with the Italian side having an option to buy him at the end of the spell next summer.

Indeed, it seems quite possible that he could make a permanent move to the club at the end of this season with Football League World being told exclusively that he is happy with how things have gone in Naples and that he is not currently that interested in returning to England to play in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace have been linked with the midfielder in recent days but it would currently take a real sell from Eagles boss Patrick Vieira to try and convince Anguissa his future lies at Selhurst Park from the beginning of next season.

Of course, Fulham might be in the Premier League next year, too, and may want to try and keep Anguissa around as well but as things stand the most likely course of action looks to be that he'll make the switch to Napoli permanently.

This Fulham ace would be better off staying on the white side of West London as Chelsea register their interest: Opinion

Chelsea are the latest club to have joined the ever increasing race for Fulham's Fabio Carvalho, as per a recent report by Eurosport.

The attacking midfielder's future at Craven Cottage is very much up in the air at the West London club, with contract negotiations having reached an impasse.

Carvalho's current deal is now into the final 12 months and as January approaches, it is becoming increasingly likely that he will depart for pastures new.

A move to Stamford Bridge would certainly cause controversy with it only being just down the road, but in truth, who can blame the teenager for showing an interest in joining the reigning champions of Europe?

Of course they aren't the only option that is likely to be on the table, with the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid having been mentioned as possible suitors in more recent times.

Furthermore the Blues don't necessarily offer the youngster the best environment to develop, with there currently being a plethora of midfield options at Thomas Tuchel's disposal right now.

More often than not a promising young player can move to the UEFA Champions League winners and end up on a continuous cycle of loans, with no end in sight in terms of bring offered a chance at first team level.

Having already been a regular at Craven Cottage with Fulham, Carvalho surely wouldn't want to go down this route and could well be better served to stay with the Whites until at least the end of the current campaign.

Doing so would give him the game time he craves and in turn he could also attract even more clubs towards making a move for him once he reaches the end of his Fulham contract.

In short he has a very big decision to make at what is a very early stage of his career and the last thing he will want to do now is make a move that he lives to regret.

Chelsea presents a brilliant option on paper, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side of West London.

Where is Fulham's 2017/18 play-off winning team now?

After losing to Reading in the play-off semi-final a season before, Fulham gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2017/18 season.

Fulham finished just two points off 2ndplace and had to settle for a play-off spot. After seeing off Derby County in the semi-final, a Tom Cairney goal was the only difference in the final and secured Fulham a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

With Fulham going 23 games unbeaten, Slaviša Jokanović would have a few decisions to make to his starting XI.

We take a look at the Fulham team that started against Aston Villa and we see where they are now.

(GK) Marcus Bettinelli

From the Fulham youth academy Bettinelli was at the club since 2010. He appeared 103 times for the club and managed to keep a clean sheet in the play-off final, most notably making a save from a Jack Grealish run.

Bettinelli did not start this season and was second choice behind David Button, but due to his poor for he was given his chance. The 29-year-old had a loan spell at Middlesbrough last season where he played 41 times for them and has recently made a shock move to rivals Chelsea where he was on the bench in their Super Cup triumph.

(RB) Ryan Fredericks

Fredericks featured 106 times for Fulham between 2015 to 2018, he was bought in from Bristol City and could play anywhere on the right hand side. Cyrus Christie joined the club in January of the promotion season but Fredericks managed to keep his place in the starting XI.

Following Fulham's promotion, he left the club on a free transfer due to not being able to sort out contract terms, he joined West Ham where he has played 57 times in the league and scored two goals.

(CB) Denis Odoi

One of the few players that still remain at the club, Odoi was sent off in the final 20 minutes of the game for a second yellow card foul. Odoi is a bit of a cult hero and is remembered for scoring the winner in the play-off semi-final and controlling the ball with his back on his debut.

The 33-year-old has been at the club since 2016 and has featured 136 times. Odoi's versatility to play anywhere in the back four has also been very helpful for Fulham.

(CB) Tim Ream

Another defender who has been at the club for several years, Ream has appeared an impressive 186 times for Fulham. Having also appeared 46 times for his country USA, Ream has shown consistency throughout his career.

Ream still find himself in the starting XI and captains the side whilst Cairney is out.

(LB) Matt Targett

A loan signing from Southampton, Targett joined the club in the January transfer window and proved a solid addition for Fulham. He made 18 appearances for Fulham and score one goal.

With Fulham failing to agree a deal for Targett in the summer they instead opted to sign Joe Byran. Since then Targett has moved to Aston Villa in 2019 where he is their starting left back.

(CDM) Kevin McDonald

The holding midfielder sadly left the club in the summer due to getting a life threatening illness. McDonald had a great career with Fulham and was involved in both promotion seasons.

He made 116 appearances for Fulham in his five-year span at the club and was also given a chance for the Scotland national team.

(CM) Stefan Johansen

Another fan favourite, Johansen was a tireless midfielder who did not shy away from a tackle. He joined the club in 2016 from Celtic and played 126 games for Fulham, he was also involved in both promotion seasons.

Johansen did have spells with West Brom and QPR on loan before making a permanent move to the latter. He has become QPR captain and has helped his side move into the play-offs, he also appeared 55 times for his country Norway before retiring in March.

(CM) Tom Cairney

The Fulham captain and the only goalscorer of the day, Cairney has captained Fulham to two promotions and is seven appearances away from 200 league appearances.

The midfielder has scored 35 goals for the club but has not been able to add to that in the past year due to ongoing injuries. Some would argue that Cairney has reached legendary status for Fulham since his arrival from Blackburn in 2015.

(RW) Aboubakar Kamara

The only real tough decision Jokanovic had to make was who he would start on the right wing. Kamara was picked ahead of Lucas Piazon, Floyd Ayite and Neeskens Kebano and played 77 minutes before being substituted.

Kamara has had is bust ups with players and managers and has had loan spells away from the club with Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor and French side Dijon. He has since completed a permanent move to Greek side Aris where he has appeared six time and scored one goal. He recently made his international debut for Mauritania as well.

(ST) Aleksandar Mitrović

The Serbian striker joined the club on deadline in January from Newcastle where he played 17 games and scored 12 goals. Fulham made the deal permanent following promotion and Mitrović has since scored 50 more goals.

Currently the joint top scorer in the Championship, Mitrović also picked up that accolade last time Fulham were in this division. Having found his goal scoring touch for Fulham again, he has also proved he can do it on an international scale where he become Serbia's all-time top goal scorer in March.

(LW) Ryan Sessegnon

From the Fulham youth academy, Sessegnon broke into the team in 2016 and had a season to remember a year later. Having assisted Cairney for the winning goal, he also scored 15 goals and picked up the Championship Player of the season.

Sadly, for Sessegnon, he has not lived up to that potential since his move to Tottenham in 2019. Having been shipped out to Hoffenheim on loan last season, Sessegnon has only made six league appearances for Spurs and currently finds himself only getting minutes in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Club have 'already chosen' to sign Fulham player – 'Masterpiece' operation will be 'concluded' after January

Fulham's relegation from the Premier League last season convinced André-Frank Zambo Anguissa look for a new club in the summer.

The midfielder had to wait until the deadline day before sealing a loan move to Napoli, and, as a part of the agreement between the two clubs, the Serie A side retain an option to make his stay permanent in 2022.

Since arriving in Italy, the 25-year-old has starred for the Naples club and his performances had resulted in reports linking him with a move to Crystal Palace.

Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli waited until the end of the window to get the Cottagers owned player because he didn't want to conclude a deal on exaggerated terms, and journalist Valter De Maggio has hailed the club chief in helping Luciano Spalletti's side sign the Cameroon international and has also stressed Napoli have made a decision on the Fulham man.

"In the last few hours, I have received a draft about an operation the club will close only in June. To tell you the truth, it is the continuation of a market masterpiece completed in June by Cristiano Giuntoli," De Maggio told Kiss Kiss Napoli's program, Radio Goal, relayed by Area Napoli.

"You know what operation I am referring to, the masterpiece from the Napoli director, this year bears a name, and is called Anguissa. He was taken by Napoli for a loan of only €400k from Fulham."

"Well yes, Napoli have already chosen to redeem the boy, but the operation will be concluded only at the end of the season. I get this draft, Napoli has already decided to pay Anguissa's ransom, but will formalize it next June."

Despite Palace's rumoured interest, De Maggio comments indicate Napoli have clear plans to retain Anguissa beyond this season.

Talking Points: Peterborough

Man of the Match Marek

Marek Rodák's performance in the Fulham goal was nothing short of imperious on Saturday afternoon. Peterborough have been strong at home this season and they put up a real fight once again, but found Rodák in inspired form whenever they broke through. His best stop came late on when Posh were pushing for an equaliser, getting a strong hand on Jonson Clarke-Harris' goalbound effort to tip it onto the post. It's now a remarkable 485 minutes since someone beat the Slovakian!

Mitro's joy of six

Aleksandar Mitrović's header ensured he scored for the sixth consecutive fixture for the first time in his Fulham career. On two previous occasions he'd bagged in five matches in a row, but he's now enjoying his purpliest ever patch. The fact that he's hit 10 goals in that six game spell, accounting for half his season tally, just says everything about the form he's in at the moment.

Phenomenal Following

The atmosphere in the away end was incredible from start to finish, with the boys roared on by no fewer than 2,698 travelling fans. In what was a hard fought contest, the Faithful did their best to try and suck the ball into the net in the second half, and were duly rewarded with yet another Mitrović header. Also, a special shoutout to the fans who managed to rattle seemingly every other fanbase with their train snacks of port and a cheeseboard.

Different but same

While Wednesday's rout in Blackburn was a joy to behold, this gritty victory was just as satisfying, albeit for different reasons. Posh defended deeply and with numbers, but Fulham remained patient and gathered more and more momentum until Mitro's winner. We're going to have games where teams stifle us, and to come away with three points on those occasions is a true sign of the character of this group.

Sensible substitutions

Marco Silva used his substitutions to terrific effect on Saturday. Denis Odoi has been in great form this season, but his first half booking – combined with having to mark arguably the home side's best dribbler in Siriki Dembele – meant a half-time withdrawal for Kenny Tete made sense. It also gave Tete a valuable 45 minutes in the tank, with the Dutchman likely to start against Barnsley as Odoi's fifth booking of the season rules him out. Further down the line, Tom Cairney came on for Jean Michaël Seri to give the Whites more of an attacking edge, and within 10 minutes TC had fed Neeskens Kebano with a 'pre-assist' for the winner. And the final switch saw Alfie Mawson shore things up in the closing stages, replacing Mitrović as Peterborough attempted to throw the kitchen sink at the Whites backline.

Chelsea 'join Real Madrid, Liverpool in Fabio Carvalho race'

Chelsea are reportedly contemplating an approach for Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho during the January transfer window.

While the Blues are currently well-stocked for youthful options in their squad, it would unlikely deter them from showing an interest in Carvalho.

The 19-year-old, who plays for the club's West London neighbours, is out of contract at the end of the season and increasingly likely to depart Craven Cottage.

According to Eurosport, Chelsea are one of a number of clubs who are keen on securing the services of the prospect during one of the next two transfer windows.

Real Madrid are known admirers, while fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Southampton have been tipped as potential destinations.

The report adds that Carvalho's friendship with Southampton defender Tino Livramento, as well as a bigger chance of regular game time, could tip the scales in their favour.

Fulham will continue to try to agree fresh terms with Carvalho until the start of the January window.

West Brom: Ismael could solve big issue by unleashing Mo Faal

With 17 games played in their Championship campaign, West Brom are currently eight points behind league leaders AFC Bournemouth and six behind Fulham in second place with Valerien Ismael's side having won nine, drawn five and lost three of their 17 matches.

In addition to the points difference, West Brom have also scored fewer goals than the two clubs currently above them in the league table, four fewer than Bournemouth (31) and 17 fewer than Fulham (44) and have failed to score on three occasions in the league this season in their games against Derby County, Stoke City and Fulham.

Looking ahead to the next stage of the season and beyond, we feel that one way Ismael could fix West Brom's issue of not scoring as many goals is to freshen up his side's attack. He may want to dip his toes into the winter market but we think he should hand youngster Mo Faal some first-team minutes instead.

Since joining West Brom's U18 side back in November 2019, the 18-year-old striker has made 26 appearances for their U18 side in which he has managed to score eight goals and provide three assists in the process.

Additionally, Faal has managed to score four goals and provide two assists in 15 appearances for their U23 side, showing just how capable he is of finding the back of the net. With that in mind, he could become a useful figure for Ismael's side going forward.

Faal has had a taste of first-team action for the Baggies having made one appearance for them which came during their 6-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup back in August where he replaced Kenneth Zohore in the second half but was unable to get on the scoresheet against the Premier League side.

Moving forward, with on-loan Baggies striker Jordan Hugill only managing to score one goal in 13 appearances in the Championship for West Brom so far this season, we feel that it could be a good opportunity for Ismael to shake up his side somewhat.

Faal, who has been described as a "physical presence" that "links the game up well, scores goals and is an aerial threat" by U18s manager Peter Gilbert must be handed an opportunity to prove himself in the first team ahead of Hugill. If he takes that chance and performs well, he could save Albion millions on potential transfer fees in the next market.

Transfer News: Crystal Palace interested in Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa

Crystal Palace are reportedly keen on signing Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who is currently away on loan at Serie A side Napoli.

According to a report from The Sun, Crystal Palace are ready to make a move for Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa next summer and beat Serie A giants Napoli to his transfer.

Anguissa signed for Fulham in 2018 from French club Olympique Marseille and was one of their better players in the Premier League campaign that ended in relegation. After that, the 25-year-old left for Villarreal on loan, where he impressed, before returning to Fulham for the 2020/21 season.

Like his debut term, Anguissa stood out yet again, but the Cottagers ended up facing the drop. This past summer saw the 25-year-old leave Craven Cottage on loan, as he signed for Napoli, where he has impressed heavily. The Cameroon international has featured in 14 games across all competitions for the Partenopei, playing a key role in their strong start to the season.

Napoli have an option to make his transfer permanent at the end of the season, but Crystal Palace are now plotting to stop that from happening as they hope to lure Anguissa to Selhurst Park instead. The report claims that the Eagles manager, Patrick Vieira, is a huge admirer of the midfielder and wanted to sign him last summer.

Having missed out on his signing, Vieira is keen on making another attempt to bring him to the south London club next year. Crystal Palace could use a midfielder of his qualities, considering that James McArthur is 34 years old and is in the final year of his contract, while Cheikhou Kouyate's deal also runs out at the end of the ongoing campaign.

Furthermore, Conor Gallagher is at the club only on a season-long loan deal and will return to Chelsea in the summer, as he intends to prove himself at Stamford Bridge. Thus, a move for Anguissa could make a lot of sense for Crystal Palace. Able to play as a holding midfielder or in a box-to-box role, Anguissa can add more quality to the midfield department at Selhurst Park.

At 25, the Cameroonian international has his best years in front of him, while he has also proven himself in the Premier League in the past. Fulham, for their part, are open to selling him permanently and will demand a fee of £20 million, although they might have to settle for a lower sum as the midfielder will be entering the final year of his contract.

What remains to be seen is if Vieira and Palace can convince Anguissa to choose a move to Selhurst Park over Napoli, where he has grown into a vital cog.

D'Auria-Henry delivers as Fulham U23s beat Burnley

The returning Luciano D'Auria-Henry poached a close-range winner as Fulham's under 23s secured a sixth successive victory by beating Burnley 2-1 at Leyland this evening. Substitute D'Auria-Henry, making just his second appearance of an injury-ravaged season, popped up at the back post to fire Marlon Fossey's fine cross home and settle a very even contest.

Teenage attacking midfielder Matt Dibley-Dias, the star of the show throughout, had given the visitors the lead three minutes into the second period with a looping header over Burnley keeper Sam Waller from a floated ball in by Sonny Hilton. But seventeen year-old striker Michael Mellon nodded home his fifteen goal of a prolific campaign from Owen Dodgson's corner and at that stage the young Clarets look well-placed to extend their own unbeaten run to eight matches.

D'Auria-Henry, restored to a midfield role he had occupied when playing for Fulham's junior sides, showed serious predatory instincts to profit from a dangerous Fossey cross as the visitors regained the lead. They had a glorious opportunity to further their advantage moments later when Kieron Bowie was brought down by Bobby Thomas, but Waller made a splendid reaction save from Connor McAvoy's penalty. The Whites braved a late Burnley onslaught – with Fabri saving well from Mellon and punching away a late free-kick – to lengthen their lead at the top of the Second Division to seven points.

Wigley made a number of changes with international call-ups depriving him of his usual line-up. Jay Williams partnered McAvoy in central defence, with Idris Odutayo lining up at left back. Steven Sessegnon, who enjoyed a quietly efficient evening in the engine room, and Adrion Pajaziti were again paired together in the middle of the park. In the absence of Jay Stansfield and Terry Ablade, Jean-Pierre Tiehi led the line with Dibley-Dias operating as the number ten and the classy midfielder took his opportunity to step up impressively. Referee David Richardson ruled out an early Williams header for an infringement at a corner and Tiehi was booked for querying the decision.

Burnley arguably edged the opening twenty minutes with Dale Stephens curling a free-kick fractionally over the bar from 23 yards with Fabri grasping at thin air. Jacob Bedau then produced a brave block to deny Dibley-Dias as the teenager drove into the home penalty area. The hosts had another lucky escape when a Hilton corner produced an almighty goalmouth scramble but neither Tiehi nor Bowie could turn the ball home. Hilton, a lively presence on the left flank, almost broke the deadlock a minute before the interval but was denied by a stretching Waller save after cutting inside.

The young Whites didn't have to wait long for the opener after the resumption, though. Hilton, now popping up on the right wing, clipped in a cross that Dibley-Dias directed over Waller and into the top corner with his head. It was quite a way for the elegant midfielder to cap an accomplished under-23 debut. He nearly added a second seven minutes later but his snapshot was deflected behind by Thomas.

Burnley still posed a threat going forward with Joe McGlynn unfortunate not to be able to turn home Dodgson's cross after bringing the ball under control beautifully. After Finn Armstrong had surged down the right flank to win a corner, Mellon rose highest to glance Dogson's set piece into the far corner and bring Steve Stone's side level.

But Fulham showed great character to go back in front with D'Auria-Henry making a dream return just seven minutes after stepping off the bench to replace Tiehi. He found himself free at the far post to meet Fossey's low ball in and produced an emphatic finish. Waller then prevented the visitors from making it 3-1 when he dived to his left to claw away McAvoy's penalty after Bowie had been brought down in the box.

Hilton screwed a shot wide at the far post in the closing stages before Burnley roused themselves for a concerted assault on the Fulham goal. Mellon shot straight at Fabri from just outside the area after space opened up in front of him and the Spanish keeper charged off his line to fist away a late free-kick as Fulham saw out five minutes of added time.

BURNLEY UNDER 23s (4-4-2): Waller; Armstrong, Glennon, Thomas, Bedeau; Helm, Stephens (Woods 45), Dodgson, Tucker (Thompson 72); Mellon, McGlynn (Costelloe 81). Subs: Allen, Rooney.

GOAL: Mellon (64).

FULHAM UNDER 23s (4-2-3-1): Fabri; Fossey, Odutayo, Williams, McAvoy; S. Sessegnon, Pajaziti; Bowie (Sanderson 80), Hilton, Dibley-Dias (C. Robinson 88); Tiehi (D'Auria-Henry 62). Subs: McNally, C. Robinson.

BOOKED: Tiehi.

GOALS: Dibley-Dias (48), D'Auria-Henry (69).

REFEREE: David Richardson.
