Napoli increase in confidence in their pursuit of Fulham midfielder

Napoli are increasing in confidence in their pursuit to make Andre-Franck Anguissa's loan move from Fulham permanent, as per a report from Football Italia.

The report states that the Italian giants believe that they have a €15 million option to make the 25-year-old's deal permanent.

Gli Azzurri are reportedly very content with this as they believe that his value would have doubled after his impressive start to life in Naples.

This would come as a big blow to Crystal Palace, who according to The Sun, have been weighing up making a move for the talented midfielder in January.

Should a move happen, then it would also come as a blow to The Cottagers, who would have been boosted by the return of Anguissa, especially with their Premier League ambitions.

The 25-year-old was a regular under Scott Parker last season, and whilst it was a season that ultimately ended in relegation, he consistently shone at Craven Cottage.

The verdict

Anguissa is someone who would give Fulham a massive boost next season if they are in the Premier League, as there is next to no chance that he will drop down to the Championship.

Patrick Vieira is building something positive at Palace at the moment, and if a move to the Premier League was on the agenda, then Selhurst Park is looking increasingly like a favourable destination.

However, Napoli are currently at the Serie A summit and are likely to offer Champions League football to Anguissa, which could be key.

Anguissa is an extremely talented holding midfielder who would boost, and add value to the majority of sides in the top tiers in Europe.

Mitrović: A true redemption story
After his dramatic goal that sent his nation to the World Cup on Sunday night, Sammy takes a look at the redemption arc of Aleksandar Mitrović.

The 12th November 2020 was a momentous evening for Scotland and their national football team, who qualified a major tournament for the first time in 25 years. However, for Fulham's talisman Aleksandar Mitrović, it was potentially the darkest night of his career.

As he stepped up to take a crucial sudden death penalty against David Marshall, he looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Something was not right, and what followed seemed inevitable.

An average penalty, saved brilliantly by the Scotland keeper, denied his country a place at Euro 2020, a tournament that a country of Serbia's footballing pedigree should breeze to.

In fairness, Mitrović was only as culpable as the rest of his teammates, who played poorly against an improved, spirited, but quite limited Scotland side. They needed a late Luka Jovic header to even salvage the chance of spot-kicks.

While I'm confident that Mitro would have been reassured it wasn't all on him, such a blow is barely possible to comprehend. Not only that, but things had been less than rosy at home – only weeks earlier Aleksandar had missed a crucial penalty against Sheffield United, and despite two goals in Fulham's second game against Leeds United, his early-season form had been mediocre at best.

Sadly for Mitrović, worse was to come shortly after. Just 16 days after that penalty miss, Fulham travelled to the King Power Stadium for a difficult test against an in-form Leicester City. Scott Parker, struggling to get a tune out of his new team, switched to an audacious five-at-the-back system, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid as a right wing-back and Ivan Cavaleiro up-front on his own.

Remarkably, it worked – and a dynamic Ivan Cavaleiro even looked like he might actually be the answer. Fulham won 2-1, and for Parker, this style was his blueprint to survival.

Sadly, there was no space in this system for Mitrović. Parker thought Cavaleiro's work-rate and pressing abilities suited the game-plan much better than Mitro possibly could. While these are undoubtedly qualities that Cav possesses, being able to put the ball in between the white sticks is also reasonably important for a striker.

Parker said that Mitrović needed some "air and oxygen" after his bad run of form. This was true, but does putting a player semi-permanently on the sidelines achieve this?

Off the pitch, Mitrović found himself in trouble allegedly breaking UK lockdown restrictions celebrating New Year's Eve with fellow Serbian Luka Milivojević. The Palace captain had to apologise to his fans who he said he'd let down, Mitrović's time out the limelight probably saved him from a PR point of view.

On the pitch, false dawns came and went. A scoring spree for Serbia in the March international break meant that Mitrović won his place back for a crucial match away at Aston Villa. He responded with a brilliant goal, pouncing on a poor Tyrone Mings back pass to give the Whites a vital lead. Sadly, through no real fault of his own, a collapse of all collapses followed, three goals in 10 minutes by Villa sent Fulham into a championship-bound tail spin.

The face-off
By the end of the season, Mitrović looked forlorn. Had his spark been fully extinguished? Had he somehow peaked at the age of just 25?

Maybe it was the lack of fans, Parker's paint-drying tactics or the series of painful footballing moments; whatever was the cause, Aleksandar looked like somebody for whom all the joy of football had been sucked out.

Which brings us to this summer's stand off; Parker v Aleksandar. This club wasn't big enough for the both of them.

Parker was a popular (in the broader sense) manager who had two seasons ago masterminded a play-off win over the noisy neighbours, and made a semi-decent fist of keeping a ragtag loan team in the top flight.

Mitrović was president of the second tier, who feasted weekly on the likes of Luton Town with a side of Swansea City, and unlimited refills of QPR.

The fans debated, but in truth there was only one winner. Parker pottered down to Bournemouth, and Marco Silva swooped in. Job one was simple: get the black card out and show Mitro some love.

Remarkably, it worked – so well, in fact, that Mitrović signed a new contract. To say that Marco poured instant life into our number nine would be to twist the truth. He started slowly, fortunately grabbing a goal via his armpit in our second game of the campaign away at Huddersfield.

Flame rekindled
But of course, a 'slow start' at this level for Mitrović is three goals in four games. It was however, like kindling catching a light; the roaring open fire was yet to come.

Enter October. Eight goals in four games, as QPR, Cardiff, Forest and West Brom mostly just helped Mitrović to put the ball in the net. When your opponents glean as many assists as your teammates, something is going right.

"But it's just the second tier" and "he failed in the Premier League" I hear in the distance (skipping over the fact he scored 11 goals in an awful, fragmented Fulham team in 18/19). Those are fair points; he hasn't entirely proved himself, but you know when you just know? Yeah, I think we all know.

This is a different Mitro, this is a Mitro that no longer just looks to score goals himself, this is a Mitro who can drop deep, who can create, who can gift space to others simply through his very presence. When his tail is up, like it is now, it honestly feels like he can score in every single game.

The hollywood moment
So anyway, the biggest stage. How about a winner takes all, World Cup qualification match against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal at a packed Estadio de Luz? Big enough?

Step forward the master, or should that be step sideways? Step away from the ball-watching, Portuguese defence.

90th minute, back-post, target sighted. These are Mitrović's moments. You can't teach it, it's just instinct at this point. You can analyse his game with a whiteboard and a marker pen until you're blue in the face – but only a select few individuals thrive in that moment, feast upon its drama and actually deliver the required blow.

That's what Mitrović is about. It had to be him. He lives in those split seconds.

Who knows how longer he stays in SW6, hopefully forever, but let's never let anyone extinguish this man again.

Internationals: Productive Week

First team:

It was a productive few days for our players on international duty, with Mitro's heroics for his side being complimented by some dazzling displays from our other boys in the World Cup Qualifiers.

Harry Wilson claimed a couple of assists as Wales ran out 5-1 winners against Belarus in front of their own fans at the Cardiff City Stadium. Wilson's wand of a left-foot was put to good use again for both, teeing up Ben Davies from an inswinging corner for the fourth goal, before whipping one near post for Connor Roberts in the dying moments of the game to put the cherry on top.

Antonee Robinson played the full 90 as USA went top of their group with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mexico on Saturday. The big result puts the Stars and Stripes in a very strong position to qualify; three points clear of fourth-placed Panama, with the top three qualifying automatically for next year's World Cup.

Elsewhere, Jean Michaël Seri got himself a goal as Ivory Coast cruised to the three points against Mozambique, winning 3-0. Our midfield maestro did well to find a bit of space in the box, before slamming it home in the last minute for his country's third goal of the day.

Neeskens Kebano made a starring substitute appearance on Thursday, bagging a pair of assists as DR Congo came out three goals to the good against Tanzania (0-3). The first of his contributions came from a neat corner routine, where Kebano played a sharp one-two before firing it across the box for Nathan Fasika to volley home. Then, with five minutes remaining, our tricky winger delivered a curling cross from the right onto the head of Ben Malango to put the game to bed.

Also on Thursday, Marek Rodák played for Slovakia in a tightly contested 2-2 draw with Slovenia, with a 6-0 win over Malta on Sunday putting The Falcons in third place in their qualifying group.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid got more minutes for Jamaica as they overcame Honduras 2-0 before drawing to El Salvador (1-1) on Saturday.

Academy:

Terry Ablade led the line for Finland Under-21s last Friday, but his side fell to a 3-1 defeat against fellow Nordic side Norway. Finland sit fourth in their group and face Azerbaijan later today.

Goalkeeper Alex Borto made his international debut for USA Under-20s, who bounced back from defeat with a 1-1 draw against Columbia in the Revelations Cup. Our Academy stopper will hope to gain some more experience against Mexico on Tuesday.

Ziyad Larkeche starred for France Under-20s last Thursday, who suffered a 3-2 defeat against Germany after conceding a goal in the 84th minute.

George Okkas got 63 minutes under his belt for Cyprus Under-19s on Wednesday but found himself on the wrong side of a narrow 1-0 scoreline. He might have been thankful that he remained a substitute for their second game against the Netherlands, with the Cypriots falling to a heavy 5-0 defeat. They will hope to record their first qualification point on Tuesday when they face Moldova, who are also yet to get themselves off the mark.

Luke Harris' strong record for Wales continued over the international break. The 16-year-old, who captained his side, scored the opener and helped his team to a 3-1 win over Ukraine. Unfortunately, Wales couldn't replicate their performance a few days later against Portugal, suffering a 2-0 loss.

Wales still have a chance to finish second, with bottom placed Kazakhstan up next.

Michael Olakigbe made another appearance for England Under-18s, while Harvey Araujo remained an unused substitute. The young Lions clinched a win against Belgium via a penalty shootout on Saturday.

Fulham striker Mitrovic speechless after firing Serbia to 2022 World Cup at expense of Portugal

By Simon Collings @sr_collings

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was left speechless after he scored a dramatic late winner against Portugal on Sunday night to book Serbia a place at next year's World Cup.

Portugal, who will now have to navigate the play-offs, needed a draw at home to secure a place in Qatar and they looked set to earn it when Renato Sanches scored inside two minutes.

Dusan Tadic equalised before half-time, though, and then substitute Mitrovic scored in the dying minutes to ensure Serbia leapfrogged Portugal to top Group A.

"I don't know where to start — I have no words to describe this," said Mitrovic.

"It is joy and pride all mixed together. It's an incredible feeling. We're overjoyed for ourselves and for the whole nation. We have brought so much happiness.

"Both myself and the team believed in the coach, we played with great confidence.

"We have created something amazing. I don't remember it being like this in the national team, and I've been here for a long time. It is up to us to maintain this.

"This team is ready for miracles. We are going to Qatar to play football, to play for each other."

Berbatov is full of admiration for Mitrovic and Fulham

Aleksandar Mitrović scored the goal to secure Serbia's place in the 2022 World Cup and Dimitar Berbatov has been full of praise for the Fulham striker after an incredible individual start to the season.

"When you're a striker and you score goals, it doesn't matter where, in his case in the Championship with Fulham, I don't care, you just score goals," he told Betfair. " He's going to be flying around the training pitch, at home with friends, his confidence sky high."

Mitrovic has already scored 20 league goals this season for Fulham, in just 17 appearances.

The Championship goalscoring record was broken last season by Brentford's Ivan Toney who scored 31 goals and so Mitrovic has every chance of breaking the record this season.

"It's a great achievement because even if it's the Championship, there are fewer stronger teams than the Premier League, the difference is big, it's still a very tough league.

"As long as he keeps doing what he's doing and helping Fulham win games and he's scoring goals, they're going to probably qualify again for the Premier League. But then the big question comes after that, 'what do we do in the Premier League?'"

Fulham have struggled in their last two Premier League campaigns and Berbatov is hopeful that they will be more competitive the next time they reach the top flight.

"Ultimately, the goal for Fulham is to go back to the Premier League, but when they do it, please, this time, try to stay there! Do everything possible, learn from your previous mistakes otherwise it'll get embarrassing – like what's the point? Up and down, up and down.

"Football can be cruel. Sometimes you get promoted to the Premier League and then you know the team is going to buy new players to strengthen the squad. You're angry and disappointed, but that's the reality of the game. But in the case of Fulham, the players just weren't good enough."

Barnsley send cheeky dig Fulham's way ahead of Saturday's clash

The Sky Bet Championship returns at the end of this week and one of the games to take place is at Craven Cottage as Fulham host Barnsley at 3pm on Saturday.

The two sides have had very different campaigns so far with the hosts up near the top of the table after a scintillating run before this latest international break and the away side looking to climb the standings as soon as possible after changing manager.

Of course, Fulham will go into it as favourites but the Championship can throw up surprises and Barnsley will be aiming to achieve one of those this weekend.

In the meantime, the build-up has already begun and after Fulham produced a play on words to advertise this weekend's game Barnsley got into their replies with a cheeky response:

Just a bit of harmless fun on social media between the two sides who'll obviously be looking forward to getting back to the cut and thrust of the league this weekend.

Barnsley FC still hoping to appoint Markus Schopp's replacement before trip to Fulham
Barnsley's search for a head coach is taking longer than they hoped, but they are still aiming to have a new man in place for Saturday's trip to Fulham.

When Markus Schopp was sacked a week before the international break and Joseph Laumann put in caretaker control for the next two matches, it seemed obvious the Reds would look to get someone in during the fortnight the Championship was on hold for.

Plan A was to have somebody in situ by the weekend but instead Laumann was taking training without the support of an assistant after Tonda Eckert - who missed the games against Derby County and Hull City with Covid-19 - having left the club.Laumann leant on the club's analysts and goalkeeping coach Thomas Fawdry, recently arrived at Oakwell for the last two matches - one impressively won, the other alarmingly lost.

As previously reported in The Yorkshire Post, Swedish Under-21 coach Poya Asbaghi is on what is thought to be an all-foreign shortlist of candidates, but no deal is thought to be imminent.

It could be that even if a new man is appointed this week, it comes late and Laumann is still in charge at Craven Cottage, with his successor watching on.

Asbaghi was interviewed for the job in 2019 and Barnsley have been unafraid to return to candidates they have looked at in the past, as they did when appointing Schopp to replace Valerien Ismael in the summer.

The Austrian won just one of 16 matches in charge, and by the end seemed to have little support in the dressing room. Although there were mitigating factors, it reached the point where the excuses no longer washed in the boardroom.

Hull moved above Barnsley with their surprise victory at Oakwell and are on the verge of a takeover by Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali which could bring fresh investment in the squad in January and, such is the nature of these things, the removal of unpopular head coach Grant McCann.

Cardiff City also have a new manager, with Steve Morison given the job permanently during the international break after the sacking of Barnsley-born former defender Mick McCarthy.

The Reds are four points adrift of safety.

Fans Think Aleksandar Mitrovic Trolled Cristiano Ronaldo With Coca-Cola Can

Aleksandar Mitrovic was accused of trolling Cristiano Ronaldo with a Coca-Cola can, after the Serbia striker's goal stopped Portugal qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

If there's one thing Ronaldo hates more than losing it's fizzy drinks. The Manchester United forward has previously revealed the fact he hates that his son drinks them.

Then in the past summer, the Portugal forward was in the headlines for moving two bottles of cola during Euro 2020, rather than allow it to be in front of him during a press conference.

That stunt actually hit Coca-Cola hard, with the company reportedly being hit by a $5.2 billion dive off their stock price, but now Mitrovic may have got revenge for them.

The Serbia striker scored a late winner on Sunday night, as his side faced Portugal, to earn his country a place at next winter's World Cup in Qatar, the Ronaldo's side now having to face a play-off.

Following the game, Mitrovic was recorded celebrating the win and fans think that he was trolling the five time Ballon d'Or winner with a drinks can.

Foundation In Focus: Sophie Modak

Fulham FC Foundation Coach Sophie Modak wears many hats but only one tracksuit! Across any given week she can be found coaching in different sessions where participants range from 3 to 63 years old, as well as each Sunday spent representing Fulham Football Club's senior women's side. We caught up to talk through her time at Fulham so far.

You joined us as a Health and Wellbeing coach, working on programmes like Walking Football and Fulham Memories. What were your previous experiences in Health and Wellbeing?

I have quite a lot of experience working with older adults in personal training. I started off working as a lifeguard when I finished school, then from there it was a natural progression in that gym environment to get qualified to work in the gym, start doing some personal training and go from there. I still do work as a personal trainer now. It's really fun because everyone is different, they have different goals and things they want to achieve. It's nice to be part of their journey and help them through that.

How did your role grow from Health and Wellbeing to the wide variety of coaching you do today?

I've always liked to do a bit of everything so the more I learnt about different programmes that we deliver I just wanted to be involved because it's such great work and so diverse. I think the first 'other' programme I worked in was our DisAbility team. I suppose it was a benefit of lockdown to be able to meet different participants, although it was predominantly online you still got a really good feel for what each programme had to offer. When we came back to face-to-face delivery it was still nice to be involved in those sessions and see everyone in real life.

Tell us about the challenge of coaching online during lockdown.

It was new for everyone, no one really knew what to expect. We adapted as we went and learnt along the way. I met our Active Autism and DS Badgers groups working online in lockdown so when we came back to face-to-face sessions it was nice transition. Obviously online is different to face-to-face but also there are a lot of similarities. As long as it's engaging and everyone's having a good time, it's fun for everyone then.

You also Head Coach our Girls Only Skills Club as well as coaching on our Girls Development Centre. How did that start?

Because I've worked across different programmes the Foundation trusted me to take it on. It was a good chance for me to develop and progress as a coach, because it's a different coaching style entirely. Again it's a nice one to add to the mix of the sessions I've been doing and helps me develop at the same time.

You also play for FFCW, joining shortly after you began working at the Foundation. How did that occur?

I was quite lucky, when I started work here the Women's team was run by Fulham FC Foundation so (FFCW Head Coach) Steve Jaye was here, we got chatting and he came to watch one of my games. After that he asked if I wanted to come train at Fulham, which was a big compliment, so I came down to start training. Again it was that professional side of things, the set up, all the facilities, and the players were so nice. It was such a great environment from the first session I went down to.

How has this season gone so far?

It's been great. Our aspiration for this season is to push for promotion, it's not going to be an easy journey, but I think everyone's really dedicated and trusting in the process. There is work to be done but we're going in the right direction.

As a coach and a FFCW player you are a role model for so many of our younger participants. How do you reflect on the impact you've made?

I think as the years go on you realise how important the work we do is for everyone. Obviously they choose to come to our sessions, which shows the importance of it to them. It's just like small wins sometimes, if you see someone who has been a bit nervous to come to a session and suddenly one day they walk in all smiling, you think 'Yes I've achieved something!' It's just really nice to be a part of.

World Cup: Championship to be paused during Qatar 2022 showpiece next, but League One and Two will continue

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar starts on November 21 next year and runs through to December 18, Championship follows Premier League in announcing a pause of domestic action during the tournament; League One and League Two will continue as normal

Championship action will be paused for almost a month during the 2022 World Cup but fixtures will continue in League One and League Two.

The World Cup, traditionally held during the summer, is scheduled to be staged between November 21 and December 18 next year in Qatar.

The English Football League (EFL) has adjusted its schedule to accommodate the international tournament, with a break in Championship matches planned from November 13 to December 9.

That period includes the World Cup group stage, plus the opening round of knockout games.

The EFL also confirmed the fourth round of the Carabao Cup would be scheduled for the week between the World Cup final and the Premier League's resumption on Boxing Day.

"Match round 16 in the Championship, set to take place on Saturday, November 12, will be the final round of fixtures played ahead of the call-up period for the tournament, which begins on Monday, November 14," read an EFL statement.

"The Championship will resume on December 10 2022 following the culmination of the World Cup group stages, whilst League One and League Two fixtures will continue as normal."

Individual fixtures in League One and League Two could still be postponed during the World Cup, subject to existing international call-up criteria being met.

All three divisions will begin the 2022-23 season on the weekend of Saturday, July 30, with the final round of the regular campaign set for the weekend of Saturday, May 6.

Play-off finals are scheduled to be played between May 27 and 29.

Sell or keep? Fabio Carvalho at Fulham as Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid eye deal

It seems barely a few days can pass without a new story concerning Fabio Carvalho coming to light and it's probably going to be like that for at least the rest of this season, or until a decision is made either way over his future.

The attacking midfielder is a very talented young player and seems destined for a bright future and, that said, some of the game's leading lights are being linked with him.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been credited with an interest in him among other big sides and, clearly, Fulham face a real fight to try and keep him.

Indeed, the time will come where, if he does not sign a new contract and the indicators become that he is not going to, the club will then need to decide whether to sell in January and try and get some sort of fee or keep him for the remainder of the season, try and win promotion with him involved and then let him leave for a nominal amount in the summer.

Certainly, it's far from the position Fulham would have wanted to find themselves with another fine young talent coming through but that is the situation they are in, and it's one they'll need to start weighing up.

In truth, Fulham have shown this season they are more than capable of getting results without him and so, really, this is a purely financial call.

Again, they're not strapped for cash and it's more not wanting to lose a player this good for so cheap that they want to avoid as much as possible.

If Carvalho is not going to sign then perhaps a January exit is best for Fulham, but whether that comes to pass really is up for debate.

Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic turns hero, in one year

he 27-year-old Fulham striker, who had also suffered a loss of form at his club during the tough, year-long spell, sparked wild celebrations in Belgrade

Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic hit the lowest point of his international career last November when he missed the decisive penalty of their Euro 2020 playoff final against Scotland in a shootout that sent the Scots through to the finals.

One year later, he emerged as his country's hero with a 90th-minute goal that gave the Serbians a 2-1 2022 World Cup qualifying win at Portugal on Sunday and a berth in the 32-nation tournament in Qatar.

The 27-year-old Fulham striker, who had also suffered a loss of form at his club during the tough, year-long spell, sparked wild celebrations in Belgrade as fans thronged the Serbian capital's streets after the game. Very few pundits would have anticipated such joyous scenes after the Euro 2020 qualifying fiasco, with Serbia only reaching the playoffs through the Nations League after a poor run in the Euro qualifiers.

But Mitrovic, who in the meantime also became his country's all-time top scorer with 44 goals in 69 appearances, spearheaded Serbia's charge as he netted eight in as many qualifying games having come on as a halftime substitute against Portugal.

"Payback time for Scotland, with interest," a delighted Mitrovic said after silencing a vocal home crowd in Lisbon. "When you work hard, it's only a matter of time before you get your reward. We've got a great atmosphere, the best I can remember and I've been here a long time. I am at a loss of words to describe how I feel.

"Coach (Dragan Stojkovic) had told us that we are capable of producing miracles. When he entered the dressing room after the game, he said 'You guys are out of your minds'."
Stojkovic, once a gifted attacking midfielder who reached the 1990 World Cup quarter finals with the former Yugoslavia, transformed Serbia's approach after taking over in March three weeks before the opening 3-2 win over Ireland.

He instilled a bolder philosophy based on keeping possession and taking the game to the opposition instead of sitting back and hoping for smash-and-grab results against the run of play.
It paid off throughout the campaign as Serbia finished with six wins and two draws, having dominated against 2016 European champions Portugal with crisp one-touch passing after falling behind in the second minute.
