Fulham 4-1 Barnsley

Aleksandar Mitrovic has now scored 12 goals in his past eight games for club and country

Aleksandar Mitrovic headed his 21st league goal of the season as Fulham made it seven Championship wins in a row by sweeping aside struggling Barnsley to go top of the table.

Mitrovic - who has also scored three goals for Serbia in World Cup qualifiers since September - beat Brad Collins from six yards and Fabio Carvalho cut inside to double the lead before half-time.

The visitors, whose new head coach Poya Asbaghi takes up the role on Monday, lacked a comparable cutting edge despite the return of Carlton Morris from injury.

And Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson made the points safe in the second half either side of a consolation goal from Barnsley sub Victor Adeboyejo after Cauley Woodrow's header rebounded to him off the post.

oseph Laumann, put in charge by the Tykes following the sacking of Markus Schopp, made six changes for his third and final game as interim boss, with Morris fit to play for the first time since August.

They made an encouraging start as Marek Rodak tipped over a 20-yard effort by Romel Palmer, but Fulham almost went ahead when Michael Hector's shot from the edge of the box thumped the post.

The Londoners did not have to wait long for the breakthrough as Mitrovic scored following Kenny Tete's cross, and he also provided the assist before Carvalho curled home his fourth of the season.

Wilson had a couple of chances to add another before the break and Tom Cairney saw an effort deflected on to the bar following the restart before Mitrovic brought a smart save from Collins with another header from the resulting corner.

Kebano finally slid in the third from Wilson's cross and the provider then turned scorer by chesting down Jean-Michael Seri's ball and firing past Collins just three minutes after Adeboyejo had pulled one back.

It should have been five as Mitrovic burst forward from halfway before squaring the ball to Carvalho, and although he shot wide of an open goal, Barnsley are four points from safety and with the joint lowest goals scored tally in the division, leaving Asbaghi under no illusions as to the scale of the task facing him.

Fulham head coach Marco Silva told BBC London 94.9:
"Apart from the first 10 minutes, we started to play our game, we started to create problems for them, to express ourselves on the pitch.

"There were some very good moments of football. There are things we practise on a daily basis and when I see the players can do it on the pitch on matchday, it's fantastic for us.

"The only thing that was not good was the way we conceded the goal but it's something we keep improving, not just on the pitch but mentally as well.

"Our players know it's really important to have clean sheets, it could have been a perfect afternoon and it wasn't because of that."

Barnsley interim boss Joseph Laumann told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"They are maybe the best footballing side in the league.

"I think we were good until the first goal, we looked quite stable. The main thing we needed was to hurt them more when we had the ball.

"I will meet him [Poya Asbaghi] tomorrow to see how he felt. Yesterday, we spoke a bit and I told him about the game plan and what we would try to do against Fulham.

"I hope he is like a fresh, new start for everybody. We need to start winning games."

Post-Barnsley Press Conference

Marco Silva described Fulham's dismantling of Barnsley as a near perfect performance.

All four of the Whites' forward players found the back of the net, with first half efforts from Aleksandar Mitrović and Fabio Carvalho complemented by efforts from Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson after the break.

The only minor blip was a consolation goal for the Yorkshiremen just before Wilson got number four.

"A very good game from ourselves," was Silva's assessment. "I give all the credit to our players and congratulate them for doing what we had planned.

"We were committed from the first until the last, apart from two or three moments. Congratulations to them.

"The first 10 minutes was not really good. They came here with a clear plan to block some of our moments we would have liked to explore on the opposition side.

"After the first chance that we had with Hector, we started to express ourselves, to find the moments to explore, to find the spaces and the gaps, and we started to play in the way we like.

"Second half was much better, some very good moments of football, some very good goals, which is what we planned to do. I'm pleased to see we scored four, we could have scored many more.

"It could have been a perfect afternoon, apart from the goal that we conceded, and I have to keep working with our players on that, to focus from the start until the end. But it was a fantastic performance from ourselves."

REDS THUMPED BY LEAGUE LEADERS

It was a tough day in the nation's capital for Barnsley, easily beaten by promotion-hunting Fulham at Craven Cottage.

An afternoon to forget for the Reds, in front of their new head coach, comfortably seen off by a Fulham side who moved top of the table with this latest victory.

The game's first major incident arrived on 10 minutes as an impressive looking Reds side in the early stages went close through Romal Palmer, whose first-time effort from the edge of the box was touched over the crossbar by Marek Rodak.

Our hosts hit back 10 minutes later when a well-worked free-kick from deep resulted in a defensive clearance that reached only Michael Hector, and the centre back struck the foot of the post from 20 yards out.

Fulham did take the lead on 24 minutes, however, as a wonderful Kenny Tete cross from the right flank was met perfectly by Aleksandar Mitrović, towering above his marker to nod home from eight yards out. His 21st goal of the season. The Reds had it all to do, after what had been a promising start.

That start seemed a long time ago when Fabio Carvalho netted the Whites' second on the half-hour, curling home from inside the box after a mazy run off the left wing.

Welsh international Harry Wilson should have probably added a third goal five minutes before the break but he blazed high and wide from 10 yards out with the goal at his mercy. The promotion-chasers were carving the Reds open time and time again at this stage, with Barnsley begging for the interval.

But there was another chance for Fulham before then, with Brad Collins out quickly to deny Wilson who'd scampered through unopposed.

HALF-TIME: Fulham 2-0 Barnsley

Service resumed in similar fashion after the break, with Fulham skipper Tom Cairney seeing an effort deflect against the bar, before Collins pulled off a terrific one-handed save to deny Mitrović's header from inside the six yard box.

After a tweak in system and the introduction of Aaron Leya Iseka, the Reds began to enjoy more possession and Cauley Woodrow saw a smart effort turned behind by Rodak on the hour-mark.

But the home side clinically responded, a quick break forward via Wilson on the right, and after being allowed to check in onto his stronger side, he found the run of Neeskens Kebano who half-volleyed home from 10 yards out for 3-0.

The Reds supporters had something to cheer when substitute Victor Adeboyejo - on for Morris - was on-hand to fire home a rebound after Woodrow's initial header came back off the post, but it was only a brief respite from reality.

Wilson grabbed Fulham's fourth just two minutes later as he finished one-on-one after an inch-perfect Jean Michael Seri ball had picked him out.

It could have been five for the hosts, but somehow Carvalho missed an open goal in the game's dying embers.

Another defeat then, and the Reds remain four points adrift of safety, with the on-looking Poya Asbaghi taking the reins from Monday morning, knowing there's a lot to work on.

FULL-TIME: Fulham 4-1 Barnsley

Collins, Sibbick, Helik, Andersen, J.Williams, Benson, Styles, Palmer, Woodrow, Morris, Frieser.

Unused: Walton, Vita, Oduor, Oularé.

Fulham top of Championship after crushing Barnsley

Fulham moved to the top of the Championship table with an emphatic win at Craven Cottage.

Goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson made it seven victories in succession for Marco Silva's enterprising side.

The visitors, second bottom of the Championship, began well and midfielder Romal Palmer brought out a superb save from Whites keeper Marek Rodak, who tipped his fierce 20 yard shot over the bar.

Fulham eventually responded, and defender Michael Hector, foraging at the edge of the Tykes' penalty area, was unfortunate to see his rasping drive skid off the base of the post following good work by Tom Cairney and Tim Ream.

However, Fulham were more clinical – and they took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Kenny Tete supplied an inviting cross from the right and, from six yards out, Mitrovic managed to climb above Toby Sibbick to head down into the corner of the net.

Regaining control of the tempo, it was no surprise to see Fulham double their lead on 34 minutes.

Pressing in from the left flank, Carvalho made a quick, neat exchange with Mitrovic, before stepping into the Barnsley penalty area at pace to fire home.

Wilson clipped the bar with a side-footed effort just two minutes after the restart, when set up cleverly by Carvalho.

Rodak was brought into action again when he tuned away an impressive volley from former Fulham man Cauley Woodrow in a rare attack by the Yorkshire outfit.

In the 72nd minute, Kebano supplied a third goal for Fulham.

The midfielder was on hand at the far post to direct a right-wing cross by Wilson past keeper Bradley Collins.

Barnsley, to their credit, pulled a goal back on 78 minutes. Substitute Victor Adeboyejo was perfectly poised to net after Woodrow's header hit the post.

But just two minutes later Fulham managed to make it four.

Moving into the Barnsley penalty area at speed, Wilson expertly controlled a great pass by Jean Michael Seri before blasting home with conviction.

Fulham: Rodak, Robinson (Bryan 84), Ream, Hector, Tete, Reed (Seri 79), Cairney (Onomah 79), Kebano, Carvalho, Wilson. Mitrovic

Fulham 4-1 Barnsley, Championship: report, ratings and verdict

Fulham moved to the top of the Championship with a dominant 4-1 win against a lacklustre Barnsley at Craven Cottage.

The first effort of the match came from Barnsley's Romal Palmer, forcing Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak into an acrobatic diving save to his left.

Michael Hector then hit the post mid-way through the first-half before Aleksander Mitrovic opened the scoring with his 21st of the season a few minutes later with a towering header from a Kenny Tete cross.

Fabio Carvalho doubled Fulham's advantage in the 34th minute, crowning his return to the starting line-up with a crisp right-footed effort on the edge of the Barnsley box.

Three minutes into the second-half Tom Cairney hit the bar after some sumptuous build-up play, but mounting pressure finally resulted in Neeskens Kebano's well-timed volley from a Harry Wilson cross taking the game beyond Barnsley with Fulham's third.

Substitute Victor Adeboyejo scored a Barnsley consolation with just over ten minutes left, before Wilson rounded off an impressive Fulham performance with a cool finish on his left-foot after drifting onto a handsome Jean Michael Seri pass.

Fulham 4-1 Barnsley: Aleksandar Mitrovic nets 21st goal of the season as hosts claim seventh successive Championship victory to go top of the table

Fulham made it seven league wins in a row by beating struggling Barnsley
Aleksandar Mitrovic scored from close range before Fabio Carvalho's strike
Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson made the points safe in the second half

Aleksandar Mitrovic added yet another goal to his remarkable season haul - but boss Marco Silva highlighted a late opportunity that went begging to underline the forward's commitment to Fulham's promotion charge.

Mitrovic set the Cottagers on course for the win that moved them to the top of the Championship with his 21st league goal of the campaign, with Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson completing a routine win.

Victor Adeboyejo replied for struggling Barnsley but the margin of victory could have been even greater, particularly if Carvalho had not missed an open goal after being unselfishly set up by Mitrovic in the final moments of the game.

Fulham made it seven Championship wins in a row by sweeping aside struggling Barnsley

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic headed home his 21st league goal of the season

'I told the players in the dressing room, that shows his (MItrovic's) commitment to the club, his team-mates, to me, to the staff and with our target,' said Silva. 'I think it was 4-1 and he did what he should do, and he did it.

'The players know we want to share the goals but of course if you have a player like Mitro normally the striker is the one who scores. But we have to link with the wingers and the midfielders have to appear in the right places, and we did that.

He added: 'Of course it's good to be top of the table. But we want to look at the table before the last day of the competition.'

New Barnsley boss Poya Asbaghi - who takes formal charge on Monday - watched from the stands as Mitrovic headed the 24th minute opener before Carvalho added the second ten minutes later with a fine individual goal.

Kebano put Fulham completely in control in the 72nd minute and Wilson wrapped things up with a cool finish after Adeboyejo had replied in the 78th minute.

'We have lots of games to come and I hope there is going to be some fresh start under the new manager and I truly believe we have the team and the quality to get out of the situation,' said Jo Laumann, the interim Barnsley manager.

'When someone new comes in you always hope they will get something extra out of the team and the squad. There is a lack of confidence and I hope he can increase the belief but they are good characters and it has never been about a lack of belief.'

Seventh heaven for flying Fulham

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his 21st goal of the season as Fulham went top of the Championship. Credit: AP

Fulham swept back to the top of the Championship after cruising to their seventh straight win with a 4-1 victory over Barnsley at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandar Mitrovic struck the opener and cued up the second for Fabio Carvalho to sum up the size of the task facing the visitors' new boss Poya Asbaghi.

Neeskens Kebano increased Fulham's advantage midway through the second half and despite a consolation from Victor Adeboyejo, Fulham's Harry Wilson sealed a convincing win late on as Fulham moved a point above Bournemouth, who play Derby on Sunday.

Ten-man West Brom gave up more ground on the division's top two as they sunk to their fourth straight away defeat in a 1-0 reversal at Huddersfield.

Danel Sinani's sixth-minute strike proved enough for the home side, while the Baggies had Jake Livermore sent off midway through the second half for a high tackle.

Matt Crooks headed an early opener but Chris Wilder failed to summon a win in his first match in charge of Middlesbrough, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Millwall.

The Lions levelled through Sol Bamba's own goal in the 27th minute as Boro were forced to endure their fourth straight game without a win.

Steve Morison had better luck in his first game since being confirmed as Cardiff's new permanent boss, as the Bluebirds came from behind to win 2-1 at Preston.

Sean Maguire put the hosts in front after just two minutes but Mark McGuinness headed an equaliser at the start of the second half before James Collins nodded home a 66th-minute winner.

Coventry were indebted to keeper Simon Moore for a superb late save to deny Morgan Gibbs-White as the Sky Blues held on for a goalless draw at Sheffield United.

Goals from Mario Vrancic and Tyrese Campbell saw Stoke boost their play-off push with a 2-0 win over Peterborough, although the victory was tainted by Sam Surridge's sending-off in injury time.

That result helped Hull bounce out of the bottom three in place of Posh as they won 2-0 against 10-man Birmingham.

George Honeyman gave the Tigers the lead before Gary Gardner was sent off shortly before half-time following an off-the-ball incident.

Mallik Wilks struck Hull's second in the 57th minute to make it two wins in a row for Gavin McCann's men.

Bristol City's bid to return to winning ways was denied by a late Ben Diaz equaliser for Blackburn at Ashton Gate.

Callum O'Dowda had put the home side in front in the 34th minute but the visitors fought back to share the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Reading and Nottingham Forest also shared the points as Scott Dann's 64th-minute effort cancelled out Philip Zinckernagel's fourth-minute strike for the visitors.

Keshi Anderson scored in the 86th minute to salvage a point for Blackpool at Swansea, who had led through Joel Piroe's first-half opener.

Silva praises players after another thumping Fulham win

Head coach Marco Silva praised his Fulham side after they powered past Barnsley 4-1 to go top of the Championship table.

Goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson made it seven victories in succession for the Whites.

The outcome was never in doubt at Craven Cottage, with Serbia international Mitrovic delivering his 21st goal of the campaign.

Fulham, now a point ahead of Bournemouth, played with real confidence and fluency against the Tykes, who are currently struggling in the relegation zone.

"A very good game from ourselves and the players deserve all the credit," said Silva. "They did what we had planned and were very committed from first minute to last.

"We expressed ourselves and played in the way we liked. The second half was much better with very good football.

"It is very good to score four and a fantastic performance. It is good that the goals have been shared by the players and to see our wingers score as well.

"It is a very good afternoon for us and we created so many chances. Mitro is showing his commitment to this football club, to his team-mates and our plan."

The Whites face bottom club Derby next week – but Silva is maintaining level-headed.

"We need to keep working behind the scenes," he said.

"We haven't spoken about the table. It is not something that is always in our speech on a daily basis.

"If you are playing in this way it is fantastic and reflects in the table."

Four-star Fulham batter Barnsley

Marco Silva selected an adventurous line-up in a bid to maintain Fulham's momentum after the international break and his flowing forward line delivered with all four attackers on the scoresheet as the Whites moved to the top of the Championship table after putting four past beleaguered Barnsley at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

A trademark header from Aleksandar Mitrovic – his 21st goal of an already extraordinary season – set the hosts on their way to a comfortable victory. The Serbian striker, still on a high after sending Serbia to the World Cup last weekend, laid on a second for the returning Fabio Carvalho before Neeskens Kebano grabbed the goal another exceptional display merited by lashing in at the far post from Harry Wilson's cross. The only blot on the copybook was a late consolation for substitute Victor Adeboyejo after former Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow had nodded against the post, but Wilson almost immediately restored Fulham's three-goal advantage with an assured finish after a sumptuous through ball from Jean Michael Seri.

The winning margin made the victory look routine, but Barnsley – in front of new manager Poya Asbaghi – began brightly and had the better of the early exchanges. The Tykes made light of their perilous league position by taking the game to Fulham and Marek Rodak made a sensational one-handed save to tip Romal Palmer's rasping drive over the crossbar. Woodrow and the returning Carlton Morris posed problems for the Fulham back line, but the Whites overcame those early jitters to offer a threat of their own.

The hosts looked particularly threatening from set plays with Mitrovic narrowly failing to connect with a Kenny Tete flick on from Harry Wilson's corner and Michael Hector hammering a drive against the far post after Tim Ream had won a header in the Barnsley box. The goal wasn't long in coming and Tete, starting his first game since August, produced a peach of a cross from the right which Mitrovic directed into the far corner with ease after outjumping Michael Helik.

Barnsley almost made their task doubly difficult shortly afterwards when an overhit backpass from Callum Styles had Bradley Collins scrambling to clear off the line. Carvalho, a livewire throughout, began and finished the move that put Fulham further clear ten minutes before the break. The talented teenager tiptoed infield from the left flank and made the most of a bit of fortune when his one-two with Mitrovic bounced off Josh Benson to fire between Collins and his near post.

Wilson might have made it three before the break but shot fractionally over after being released by a brilliant pass from Tom Cairney. The skipper, who replaced Seri in Silva's starting line-up, came close to scoring himself just after the break when his shot was deflected against the crossbar after mesmorising approach play from Wilson and Carvalho. Mitrovic nearly headed home at the near post from the ensuing corner, but Collins pulled off a fabulous reaction stop.

Mitrovic went close again at the near post but couldn't squeeze his shot some after Wilson had wriggled away from two defenders to cut the ball back brilliantly from the byline. Barnsley kept plugging away and Woodrow came closest to bringing the Tykes back into it with a speculative shot from 20 yards, but Rodak palmed away the striker's volley. Fulham struggled for fluency at times in an attritional second half but they found a third eighteen minutes from time.

Mitrovic weighted a wonderful pass out to Wilson on the right and the Welsh winger's fabulous cross picked out Kebano perfectly at the far post. The Congolese winger continued his fine goalscoring form with a perfect first-time volley back across the goalkeeper and celebrated with some more fancy footwork with Carvalho in front of the Hammersmith End.

Barnsley kept sending green shirts forward in spite of another setback and they got their reward with twelve minutes to play. Helik produced a terrific cross from the right that Woodrow headed against the far post, with Adeboyejo able to poke the rebound beyond a grounded Rodak to reduce Barnsley's arrears. But Fulham grabbed a fourth with their very next attack. Seri, fresh off the bench, lifted a sumptuous ball over the Barnsley back line to release Wilson, who stroked him with a modicum of fuss.

Fulham could easily have had more goals with the most glaring miss coming at the death when a rampaging Mitrovic unselfishly squared for Carvalho as he bore down on the goalkeeper, only for the youngster to somehow shoot into the side netting when it seemed easier to score. But Fulham's potent forward line had fired another ominous warning to the rest of the division – and can look down from the summit for at least a few hours before Bournemouth take on Derby tomorrow.

Silva delighted after Fulham put Barnsley to sword

Marco Silva felt his Fulham side produced an almost perfect performance after putting four past Barnsley this afternoon to move to the top of the Championship.

Silva was rewarded for his adventurous starting line-up as the Whites overcome a jittery start to cruise to a comfortable win with Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson scoring the goals that secured a seventh straight victory. The Fulham head coach told his post-match press conference:

"A very good game from ourselves. I give all the credit to our players and congratulate them for doing what we had planned. We were committed from the first until the last, apart from two or three moments. Congratulations to them.

The first 10 minutes was not really good. They came here with a clear plan to block some of our moments we would have liked to explore on the opposition side. After the first chance that we had with Hector, we started to express ourselves, to find the moments to explore, to find the spaces and the gaps, and we started to play in the way we like.

Kebano: Big win 'feels so good'

Neeskens Kebano was buzzing after capping another superb individual performance with a goal as Fulham thrashed Barnsley at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

The Congolese winger was a constant threat down Fulham's left flank and grabbed a deserved goal by lashing home a first-time volley from Harry Wilson's cross late in the second period. Kebano, who appears totally rejuvenated under Marco Silva, told FFCTV of his delight after the final whistle:

"It feels so good. A home game, we won and we go again and hopefully we will have the same as we had last month, we started well. We know that every game is going to be tough because teams are going to be waiting for us. We have to be there, we have to be Fulham and that's we showed today.

Kebano was pleased that Fulham took the opportunity to move to the top of the table today with Bournemouth not in action until tomorrow, but is confident that the squad won't be resting on their laurels as a result.

We know our goal. It's not because we are first now, we are going to drop some points like we did in the last few months. We have to turn up every weekend, grab us as much points as we can and hopefully we get what we want.

The winger is delighted to be enjoying his most consistent run of games in his five years at Fulham and was pleased with his individual display this afternoon.

"I always try to bring danger. I think that's what I did again today. With the goal, it's just the cherry on the cake. I think about the last goal we scored – Wilson's goal. That was a mad goal."

Journalist says Southampton target Fabio Carvalho is being monitored by a lot of clubs

Sun football reporter Tom Barclay says Southampton target Fabio Carvalho is being monitored by a number of clubs.

TEAMtalk reported last month that Southampton were looking at a January deal for the youngster and that they have been tracking him for a number of months.

The 19-year-old started the season in great form for Fulham scoring three goals in successive games before an injury ruled him out for a while, but he returned in the club's match against West Bromwich Albion.

Barclay confirmed that Carvalho is highly rated, and a number of clubs are monitoring him, telling This is Futbol: "So Carvalho from what I've heard and what I've briefly seen, because obviously, he started like a house on fire this season then has been injured for a couple of months, he only made his comeback against West Brom as a late sub, you know, is highly rated, is being monitored by a lot of clubs, has even been linked to Real Madrid."

Carvalho has featured for Fulham at U18, U23 and now senior level and during his time with the youth teams at Craven Cottage he was successful in the final third of the pitch. For the U18s he scored 17 goals and provided 13 assists and when he stepped up to the U23 squad, he scored 16 goals and registered six assists.

The attacking-midfielder only has until June next year to run on his current Fulham contract and with reported interest in him, it appears that Fulham are going to have a fight on their hands to keep him at Craven Cottage.

Carvalho chuffed to return with a goal

Fabio Carvalho said it felt 'amazing' to complete ninety minutes and end his injury hell with a goal as Fulham cruised past Barnsley at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

The talented teenager made his first start since August after being troubled by a toe injury and complications caused by contracted coronavirus and scored a terrific goal to put the Whites two to the good ten minutes before the break. The youngster, whose creativity and sharpness adds a different dimension to Fulham's forward line, told FFCTV after the final whistle that the only disappointment was not to keep another clean sheet.

"It was a good performance from the team. Good to get the 4-1 win. They were tough to be fair. I know the scoreline's 4-1, but it was a tough game – they were very physical and committed. Unlucky not to get the clean sheet, but we go again next week. One of the main things the manager drilled us in at half time was to get the clean sheet. We tried so hard, but it didn't come for us. We defended well throughout the whole game, it wasn't just the back four – it started from the front, which is a perfect thing to take."

Carvalho was delighted to link up with in-form forward Aleksandar Mitrovic again and the pair combined superbly for his well-taken goal that put clear water between Fulham and their opponents.

It's something I've been trying to practice in training a lot – combinations off Mitro a lot, because I know if I play it to him, the ball's going to come back to me. Obviously, it worked today and I'm looking to keep that on and hopefully we'll get more goals from it. He always pushes me in training to do the best I can. We had such a good chemistry before, but I obviously got Covid and I was injured, but it's good to be back now and we'll look to continue this chemistry. He's just amazing. When he's confident and on top form, he's just unplayable at times. You know that if he shoots it's a goal. He's just amazing to play with. He keeps pushing me, he gets the best out of me.

He was especially pleased to come through a full ninety minutes in what was a physical encounter and wants to help Marco Silva's side continue their excellent run of recent form.

I'm glad to be back. I'm playing in front of the fans as well, who I love. It's great to be back. Obviously, you can't play every game. I've come back from injury, I'm not going to start straightaway. I got my chance today and I took it – I'm very happy.

Marco Silva pleased to see Fulham go above Cherries at the top (but won't be getting carried away yet)

MARCO Silva was left smiling as Fulham went top of the Championship table following a 4-1 victory over Barnsley at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandar Mitrovic's 21st goal of the season and strikes from Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson ensured Silva's side moved ahead of Cherries following a seventh straight win.

The manager warned the table counts for little at this stage of the season, but feels his side's standing is a fair reflection of their performances.

Silva said: "Of course it's good to be top of the table. We started fantastic and were on the top and then when we stopped for the second international break I think we were fourth or fifth and no one talked about it. They just listened to what we should improve. And we didn't look to the table before this game.

"We want to look at the table before the last day of the competition.

"Of course we look, but it is not something that is something we talk about on a daily basis. But if you are getting the results and deserve it, it reflects on the table."

Silva was pleased with the way his side overcame their struggling opponents and particularly with the way Mitrovic's team-mates shouldered responsibility for sharing the goals around.

Mitrovic headed Fulham in front in the 24th minute with Carvalho adding the second 10 minutes later.

Kebano made it three in the 72nd minute and Wilson wrapped things up in the 81st, three minutes after Barnsley had replied through Victor Adeboyejo.

He said: "It was fantastic performance from ourselves.

"The players know we want to share the goals but of course if you have a player like Mitro normally the striker is the one who scores. But we have to link with the winger and Kebano's goal is a clear example of that.

"And of course different players should appear there and they did. Midfielders should appear in the right areas and we they did. And we did very well."

Cherries have the chance to leapfrog Fulham with victory over Derby County tomorrow.
