Fulham U23s trip to Stoke called off

Fulham under 23s trip to Stoke City in the Premier League Cup has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The fixture, scheduled for Wednesday, was called off after a high number of Covid-19 cases and injuries within the Stoke under-23 set up. The match has been rescheduled for Thursday 10 February at 1pm.

Liverpool have Real Madrid transfer edge for next Harvey Elliott amid mooted 'no-brainer' move

Liverpool have been linked with a transfer move for Fulham starlet following in Harvey Elliott's footsteps. It makes sense as a low-risk deal FSG would love.

Liverpool have previous when it comes to signing wonderkids coming through at Fulham, with Harvey Elliott having made the move to Anfield where he has already become a first-team star with a massive future ahead of him.

Now, Liverpool could return to the Championship club for another forward player who has been impressing in the second tier, with 19-year-old Fabio Carvalho drawing the attention of several clubs around Europe.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have supposedly taken an interest, too, while Liverpool are said to be scouting the player ahead of a possible summer transfer swoop.

Born in Lisbon, Carvalho moved to England when he was 12 and has represented them at international level, meaning that he will qualify as a homegrown player.

Like Elliott and other recent signings like Kaide Gordon, Bobby Clark and Mateusz Musialowski, Carvalho can play wide or as an attacking midfielder making him a versatile and appealing option to potential suitors.

That ability to play in multiple attacking roles is something that Liverpool have sought to add to their ranks of late, and Carvalho has shown himself capable of fairly consistent performances this season.

He started this season with four goal contributions in five games before picking up an injury and scored almost a goal every other game at both U18 and U23 level for Fulham.

Carvalho's contract, though, expires at the end of the season, and The Athletic reported in November that he had turned down an extension.

But that report also stated that Carvalho was set to change agent around now, which could influence things even further — either convincing him to stay at develop at Craven Cottage or seek a move.

Super agent Jorge Mendes, who has a vast array of players including Cristiano Ronaldo and also played a role in Diogo Jota's transfer to Liverpool from Wolves, is looking at Carvalho, and should the player sign with him, that would be a sure sign that a move was imminent.

The Daily Mail even reported that Liverpool would be favourites if Carvalho did become a Mendes client back in November.

Ordinarily, Carvalho would have cost an 11-figure sum to secure, but as a free transfer, the Reds would only have to pay a compensation fee.

They were ordered to pay Fulham £4.3m for Elliott, while they had to spend a record-breaking £8m to sign Danny Ings after tribunal and gave Chelsea £3m for Dominic Solanke (even though the West London side valued him at £10m).

Carvalho would also go to tribunal because he is under 24, unless Liverpool and Fulham were able to agree a compensation fee between themselves.

For what would be a low-risk, minimal amount, it seems a no-brainer.

Southampton CEO Martin Semmens has already sent a transfer warning to Fulham and Manchester City

Martin Semmens has said that Southampton's transfer plan will remain the same despite a takeover by investment firm Sport Republic, in a warning to Fulham and Manchester City

It may be a bright new beginning for Southampton Football Club following a takeover by Sport Republic, but the club's transfer plans are unlikely to change anytime soon.

And that is likely to serve as a warning to the likes of Fulham and Manchester City as Southampton look to repeat a proven transfer trick in the market.

Last summer, Saints pulled off quite the coup by signing Tino Livramento from Chelsea in a deal worth around £5million - of which they are yet to pay a penny - with the Blues having a buy-back clause that could see Southampton land a considerable fee for the teenager, who has impressed in his first season at Premier League level.

Saints have also done well with deals to sign teenager Thierry Small from Everton after he turned down a contract offer from the Toffees and striker Armando Broja on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Some Southampton fans may be excited at the prospect of big-money signings for the club following a £100million takeover by Sport Republic, which was completed on Tuesday.

But, Saints fans can expect to see very little change over the coming months and those expecting to see the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi walk through the door between now and the end of the month will be bitterly disappointed.

The takeover will, however, allow Southampton to continue the plan they already have in place to push the club forward by investing in the right players are the right time.

And that is something Southampton CEO Martin Semmens has said will happen, with a hint that more deals like the Livramento transfer could be on the cards in the future.

"We have a plan in place, a strategic plan, it's on my desk now, and this is what Sport Republic have bought into and we will continue on our path," said Semmens, speaking to BBC Radio Solent.

"With the transfer window, we will always do it our way but are we in a better position than we were yesterday? Absolutely. This allows us to focus in better on the things that we were doing already and do them a bit quicker.

"Does it give us an opportunity to do one of two more Tino Livramento deals? Yes, it does. I don't think you will see a massive change in operations. Does it leave us in a better position? Yes, it does."

He continued: "In the short term, we are absolutely fine as we were and we're progressing in our own way. This takeover gives us short-term security and long-term a series of investments and multi-club models that will allow us to be better in the future."

This could, therefore, make transfer links to the likes of Fulham's Fabio Carvalho and Manchester City duo James McAtee and Liam Delap much more likely.

Sky Sports claims that Saints could swoop for the City duo following their takeover on Tuesday, with McAtee and Delap both among a group of young City stars who have been involved with the first team this season, but could be allowed to leave on loan to get more game time.

Delap, who is the son of former Saints midfielder Rory Delap, has played three times for City, scoring against AFC Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup last season, while McAtee made his debut for Pep Guardiola's men earlier this season against Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, before a substitute appearance in the Premier League against Everton.

Both players are highly rated at City and it is unlikely that the Premier League champions would want to see them leave permanently, but loan deals could be on the cards.

Meanwhile, Carvalho has been linked with Saints before, with Southampton understood to be among a number of clubs monitoring his situation at Fulham.

The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer at Craven Cottage and Leeds United and Saints have both been named among potential suitors for the teenager, who scored against Southampton in the Premier League last season.

His current contract will expire during the summer of 2022, meaning he could be signed next summer for the price of a compensation fee, similar to the deal that saw Small swap Everton for Southampton last summer.

And judging by Semmens' comments, that could be the sort of deal Saints fans can expect to see in the coming months following the takeover of the club.

Colchester trying to extend Jasper stay

Colchester United are still trying to extend Sylvester Japser's loan from Fulham until the end of the season, according to the Daily Gazette.

The 20 year-old winger has impressed during his loan spell with the League Two outfit, scoring three times in 24 appearances, and earning international recognition for the first time with the Bulgarian under-21 side. But his current loan expired at the start of January and U's boss Hayden Mullins revealed after last night's Football League Trophy tie at Sutton United that discussions between all parties continue with Colchester aiming to keep hold of the left winger until the close of this campaign.

Games for the Weekend 08/01
It's the FA Cup this weekend and we get to travel to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City
This is our first game in what seems like forever, Birmingham, Reading and Swansea fixtures all having been cancelled due to COVID.
Marco will have a decision to make about who plays in this game, will he select his "first" team, effectively giving them a warm-up game, or give some of the "2nd string" players a run out?
We need to get back into some sort of form, we were, by our standards, in quite a poor run before the cancelled games, this could be just the game to kick start our 2nd half of the season?

If I was in charge I'd play as close to a full strength squad as I could, my team would be...

Remember it's a 12:30 kick-off.

Cardiff City headlines as update issued on Cyrus Christie and Bluebirds finally get day in court

The latest Bluebirds news from Cardiff City Stadium

Cyrus Christie stance emerges

Cardiff City showed an interest in taking Fulham's Cyrus Christie on loan but the defender is now set to complete a permanent move elsewhere, WalesOnline has learned.

The Bluebirds were linked with the 29-year-old right back, but the player had also drawn interest from Elche in Spain and Bologna in Italy. Blackburn Rovers were also credited with an interest.

While it is understood that Republic of Ireland international Christie was a player on Cardiff's radar, he is expected to sign a permanent deal with another club in the coming weeks.

It comes following reports that Cardiff were also interested in young defensive duo Rarmani Edmonds-Green, who is currently on loan at Rotherham United from Huddersfield Town, and Cameron Humphreys-Grant, who plays for Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem.

WalesOnline has been told, though, that neither player are on Cardiff's radar.

Christie set to leave Fulham

Fulham full back Cyrus Christie is set to leave Fulham on a permanent basis before the end of the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international has made 68 appearances in his three years at Craven Cottage and been part of two Championship promotion-winning campaigns. But the 28 year-old right back has played just once since Marco Silva succeeded Scott Parker last summer and has spoken publicly of his desire to be playing regular football action.

Christie had been linked with a move to Blackburn or Cardiff City during this window. But reports from Wales this afternoon claim that the Bluebirds have ended their interest in the former Middlesbrough and Derby full back after learning that a loan will not be an option in January. Christie, who came through the ranks at Coventry City, has also reportedly interested Elche and Bologna.

Cardiff City set for transfer blow as development shared involving 29-y/o

Cardiff City had an interest in Fulham's Cyrus Christie but they will miss out on the full-back this month as he closes in on a move elsewhere.

Steve Morison will be keen to strengthen his Bluebirds squad as they look to avoid relegation to League One after a difficult season so far.

However, the financial situation at the club means that the club won't be big spenders, as they instead search for potential loan deals and bargains.

And, Wales Online have revealed that Christie was a target for the Welsh side, although they won't be signing him as the 29-year-old is poised to join an unnamed club on a permanent basis instead.

Christie will be desperate to secure a move away from Craven Cottage in the summer as is not in Marco Silva's plans, who hasn't picked the Irish international in a matchday squad in the league this season.

The report states that there is interest from clubs in Italy and England in the player, who spent the previous campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The verdict

This is disappointing for Cardiff as they could do with more depth and Christie would've provided that, as he can play the wing-back role and even at left-back if he needed to.

But, it's not like they are in desperate need of a right-back specifically, so Morison will have other targets that can come in.

So, it's now down to the boss and the recruitment team to act swiftly because Cardiff are in a worrying position and they need to have a very productive January to refresh the squad.

QPR could go for Dean after missing out on Cook

QPR could turn to Harlee Dean after being pipped to the signing of Steve Cook.

A deal was agreed for Cook to join the R's from Bournemouth, but he backed out of the move after a late offer from Nottingham Forest.

Manager Mark Warburton is keen to bring in an experienced centre-back during this month's transfer window and the club are therefore looking into other potential options.

They would like to bring in either Michael Hector or Alfie Mawson from Fulham.

However, Fulham have indicated that they would not be open to a deal at this stage.

Birmingham City's Dean, 30, is attracting interest from a number of other Championship clubs and QPR are now considering making an offer for him.

Dean, who is under contract at St Andrew's until the summer of 2023, was signed for Brentford by Warburton in 2012.

He then played under him after Warburton took over as manager, having previously been the Bees' sporting director.

Fulham reject QPR approaches for Hector and Mawson

Fulham have rebuffed interest from local rivals Queens Park Rangers in defenders Alfie Mawson and Michael Hector.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has made recruiting an experienced centre back has top priority during the January transfer window. The R's thought they had struck a deal to sign Bournemouth defender Steve Cook but were pipped to the post by Nottingham Forest earlier this week. The former Brentford manager has long admired both Mawson and Hector, but Fulham dismissed enquiries from QPR about the availability of both players – according to West London Sport.

Marco Silva wants to keep both of his back up centre backs at Craven Cottage during January given Fulham's fixture pile up caused by a succession of coronavirus-related postponements. Mawson, a big money signing from Swansea in 2018, has made just eight appearances this season whilst Hector has featured only five times for the first time this term, but both will remain with the Whites in case of any issues with first choice defensive pairing Tim Ream and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Rangers have been tipped to turn their attention to Birmingham centre back Harlee Dean, who worked with Warburton during his time in charge of Brentford.

QPR showing transfer interest in Fulham duo

Queens Park Rangers have expressed their interest in defensive duo Michael Hector and Alfie Mawson from London rivals Fulham, according to West London Sport.

However the Hoops' pursuit of both centre-backs could have already hit a road block with the Championship's third-placed side said to not be willing to sanction a deal for either player right now.

Mark Warburton's side were trying to secure a deal for Bournemouth defender Steve Cook, but the 30-year-old opted to make the move to Nottingham Forest instead.

That has left Warburton with a decision to make and he's pinpointed Hector and Mawson as two players who he would like to bring to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Mawson was a 2018 addition for the Cottagers from Swansea City, with Fulham paying a fee in the region of £20 million for his services but found himself out of favour in the 2020-21 campaign under Scott Parker and ended up at Bristol City on loan but missed a lot of that spell with a knee injury.

Having played six times in the Championship this season under Marco Silva, Mawson hasn't featured since early November, whilst Hector has only played three times in the league this season before dropping back to the substitutes bench when Tosin Adarabioyo returned from suspension a few months ago.

Hector joined Fulham in 2019 from neighbours Chelsea and has only made 30 league appearances for the club since his debut in January 2020.

The Verdict

It's clear to see that Warburton is desperate to add some experience at the back to play alongside Rob Dickie and Jimmy Dunne.

Both Mawson and Hector would provide just that but despite the fact they're not getting game-time at Craven Cottage, you could potentially understand why Marco Silva wouldn't want to let them go.

They'd be left short at the back even if just one left the club and they could be directly strengthening a promotion rival with the R's just four points behind them in the table.

Wages would perhaps be an issue as well with both players likely not to be on small money but the closer to the end of January we get, the opportunity to sign at least one of them could come about if Fulham can get another defender in through the door.
