Rumour Mill: Preston show interest in signing Fulham wing back Marlon Fossey

Preston are interested in Marlon Fossey as North End join Bolton Wanderers in the race to sign the Fulham right wing back.

North End are committed to a 3-5-2 system under Ryan Lowe but new wing back are needed on both sides.

Brad Potts played well on the right side last season but isn't a natural in that role and needs competition for his place.

That isn't going to come from Matthew Olosunde with the signing from last summer already transfer-listed.

Yet whilst one American won't be playing at right wing back for Preston next season, another one could.

Preston are interested in Marlon Fossey

The Bolton News report that Preston have now become the main rivals to Bolton Wanderers in the race for Marlon Fossey.

Fulham wing back Fossey is available this summer as he has just one year left on his deal at Craven Cottage.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Bolton, recording one goal and five assists in just 15 games.

Fossey needs to leave Fulham and play first-team football and his pace, ability to carry the ball forward and creative contributions make him very attractive.

The big problem with Fossey is his injury record.

Fossey only played 15 games at Bolton because of a torn meniscus.

Fossey also had a knee problem on loan at Shrewsbury Town last season and has missed a number of Fulham Under-23 games over the years with injury problems.

Preston went down this road last summer by signing Connor Wickham and Izzy Brown, gambling on both players overcoming their injury woes.

Neither of them were able to make a single Championship start for Preston due to their injury woes and are no longer with the club.

Lowe wants robust players who can handle a big workload in the Championship and you have to question whether Fossey can do that.

This is a tough one because Fossey's skillset could be ideal for Lowe's system but if he can only play half of the games, is it worth the gamble?

We would imagine that Fossey is one of a number of options being considered for the right wing back role at Preston whilst Birmingham City are also keen on Fossey.

Rumour rating: 7/10. We can absolutely understand why Preston are keen on Fossey as his dynamic attributes down the right side would give Lowe and North End something different. The injury woes are a major concern though, especially as Preston would be expected to pay a fee for Fossey.

Director suggests Fulham are set to miss out on top target after £15m bid

Premier League newcomers Fulham are no longer in pole position to sign Manor Solomon with Serie A outfit Torino now the favourites, Shakhtar Donetsk director Carlo Nicolini tells Tuttomercatoweb.

Marco Silva's side have not completed a single new signing since sealing the Championship title. Though that's not for a lack of trying.

The Cottagers have held talks with the likes of Thomas Strakosha, Al-Musrati and the aforementioned Solomon, without managing to get anything over the line. In the case of Solomon, it was anticipated that he would be a Fulham player in time for pre-season.

Reports as far back as April claimed that Fulham had agreed a cut-price £7 million fee for the Israel international winger. Solomon was set to sign a long-term deal worth £25,000-a-week, and admitted a couple of weeks ago that he expected to be a Premier League player in 2022/23.

According to the all-seeing, all-knowing Fabrizio Romano, however, negotiations have now collapsed. Why is anyone's guess. It was suggested that there were problems regarding Solomon's signing-on bonus, though that alone should not be enough to ki-bosh a deal in such dramatic fashion.

Fulham's Manor Solomon deal falls through

"Solomon? He is a starter, he also scored some goals in the Champions League," says Nicolini, Shakhtar Donetsk's deputy director.

"Torino are in the first row, but other English clubs and two Serie A clubs have also moved. Finally, the Italian clubs have realised that there is the possibility of doing business with Shakhtar."

Torino are prioritising a new wideman following the departure of Josip Brekalo, the Wolfsburg loanee who opted against putting pen to paper on a permanent deal.

Fulham's interest in Solomon, meanwhile, goes back a lot further than this summer.

"Maccabi Petah Tikva will lose over 1.5 million euros from (Solomon's) move to Fulham," says Avi Luzon, the chairman of Solomon's former employers.

Maccabi Petah Tikva, he adds, have a sell-on clause in the forward's contract.

"In January, Shakhtar had an offer from Fulham for 18 million euros (£15 million)," Luzon says.

"If they had sold him for that amount in January, and not as Fulham would pay now, then we would have had over a million and a half euros. Fulham benefited, took advantage of the situation in Ukraine."

Liverpool transfer stance on Neco Williams explained as right-back plan emerges

Liverpool have already fielded a number of calls over Neco Williams as they wait on right-back transfer plan

Liverpool have slapped a £15million price tag on Neco Williams as they prepare for an influx of interest in the right-back.

Williams has seen his stock rise considerably following an impressive loan spell during the second half of the season at Fulham, whom he helped to the Championship title and seal promotion to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old was also part of the Wales team that on Sunday beat Ukraine 1-0 to clinch qualification to the World Cup for the first time in 64 years.

Liverpool have already fielded a number of calls regarding Williams, with Fulham among those looking to seal a permanent transfer with Cottagers boss Marco Silva having previously expressed his admiration.

And while the Reds want £15m for his services - similar to the asking price for Nat Phillips, who shone in a similar loan move to Bournemouth - they will be more than happy to keep a player who came through the Academy ranks and has made 33 senior appearances, although he has played only 84 minutes in the Premier League since December 2020 with Trent Alexander-Arnold the clear first-choice right-back.

Liverpool are nevertheless looking to strengthen their options in the position with the signing of 18-year-old Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. They will offer a deal worth around £4m plus add-ons, and are waiting for the Scotland under-21 international to decide whether he wants a move to Anfield before pursuing the transfer.

Conor Bradley, the 18-year-old Northern Ireland international right-back who broke into the Liverpool first-team this term and was nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award, will take part in the Reds' pre-season preparations, after which there will be a decision on whether he will go out on loan with a number of Championship clubs reported to be interested.

Williams, meanwhile, admits he feels like "a kid at Christmas" after Wales secured their place at the World Cup following a qualification campaign hampered by a number of obstacles, including having to wait over two months to play the delayed play-off final against Ukraine after its territory had been invaded by Russia.

"It's been a long campaign," he said. "Lots of confusion, rescheduled games, and of course the final was put back because of the situation in Ukraine.

"It was just relief at the end. It was like walking downstairs when you're a kid at Christmas and seeing all the presents. Just an unbelievable feeling that is difficult to put into words. I need a few days to sit down and think about it."

Fulham receive setback with Liverpool stance revealed on 21-year-old

Fulham will need to meet Liverpool's asking price for Neco Williams to sign the youngster this summer.

The Reds placed a £15 million price tag on the 21-year old and are more than happy to keep the academy graduate should that not be met, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The full back spent the second half of last season on loan with the Cottagers.

His performances impressed Marco Silva as he quickly asserted himself in the starting lineup.

Fulham earned promotion to the Premier League for the third time in five seasons, with Williams playing an important role in the club clinching the Championship title along the way.

The right-back played 14 league games having arrived in the January transfer window.

In that time, the Welshman scored two and assisted two as Silva's side finished the campaign with an impressive 90 points.

Fulham are hopeful of bringing Williams to the club on a permanent basis, but Liverpool are not planning to budge on their current asking price for the player, which could see this transfer saga stretch on for another number of weeks.

Williams recently played a role in Wales' World Cup qualification, starting in the 1-0 play-off victory over Ukraine that secured their place in Qatar this winter.

The Verdict

This would be a sizable fee for a player that has not played for Liverpool much since graduating into the first team squad.

However, given his performances for Fulham in the second division, it is obvious to see why the club are looking to make him a permanent addition to the team.

Liverpool do hold all the cards in this negotiation, with Williams potentially to become an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But it is at Fulham where the 21-year old will get substantial first team minutes, so he may need to force the issue to get this deal over the line, if that is what he prefers.

Callum Styles from Barnsley to Fulham: What do we know so far? Is it likely to happen?

Callum Styles has had a strong season with Barnsley despite being in a struggling side that suffered relegation.

The 22-year-old has been a mainstay in the side making 43 appearances whilst also scoring three goals and contributing an assist as well.

It's not just this season he's shown his quality either. Last season he was awarded the young player of the season award by the EFL showing his consistent quality.

As a versatile player who has shown adaptability, it's no surprise that he has attracted interest following Barnsley's relegation to League One.

What do we know so far?

According to a report from The Mirror, Fulham are interested in acquiring the player's services as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

However, they won't be competition free if they do go for him with Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest also reported to be interest.

The player is under contract at Oakwell until 2023 with the Tykes also having an option for a further year so Fulham will have to prepare what they see as a fair bid if they are to make a move for Styles.

Is it likely to happen?

Given Barnsley's relegation this season, it looks highly likely that Styles will depart the club this summer.

Not only does the player need to ensure he is playing at the highest level possible to make sure he doesn't halt his growth, but a decent fee for the player could provide the Tykes with some good funds to reinvest in the side as they search for a return to the Championship immediately next season.

Styles hasn't yet got Premier League experience so it could be a bit of a risky move for Fulham. However, he has proven his potential and you can see him fitting nicely into the side and working well with Scott Parker.

Furthermore, if their competition for the signing is the two other promoted clubs, it may make the deal seem more of a necessity to Fulham.

Report: Liverpool raise their asking price for 'fantastic' player, now they want £15m

Liverpool have raised their asking price for the sale of Neco Williams on a permanent transfer this summer.

That's according to the Liverpool Echo, who claim that Liverpool now want £15m for the Wales international.

The Reds are reportedly preparing for an 'influx of interest' in the 21-year-old after his displays for Fulham and Wales.

Liverpool are said to have already fielded 'a number of calls' about Williams' availability. Fulham are named as one club said to be interested in the right-back.

However, if their asking price isn't met, the Echo claim that Liverpool will be 'more than happy' to keep him at Anfield.

Liverpool looking for a fair price

It's somewhat difficult to understand why no club took Liverpool up on their £10m asking price for Williams last year.

Even last summer the youngster was already a proven quantity. Williams had played plenty of games for Liverpool and had just gained valuable experience at Euro 2020 with his country.

No team were willing to take the punt on him though. Instead, he more or less wasted six months of development before joining Fulham on loan in January.

That proved to be a huge success for Williams and for Fulham. The full-back impressed and was labelled 'fantastic' by manager Marco Silva via The Athletic.

After helping his temporary club to the Premier League and then qualifying for the World Cup with Wales, it's only fair that Liverpool's asking price has gone up.

Should no one be willing to meet it once more, you'd hope that another loan could be arranged for the Welshman.

Liverpool look likely to bring in young right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. It wouldn't do either player too much good to have another standing in between them and the first-team.

With interest in Williams reportedly high though, hopefully he can find himself a permanent home during the window.

Liverpool 'want £15m for Williams'

Liverpool have put a £15m asking price on Fulham transfer target Neco Williams, according to reports this afternoon.

The attacking full back enjoyed an enormously successful loan spell at Craven Cottage in the second half of last season, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in fifteen appearances as Marco Silva's side secured the Championship title. The 21 year-old is desperate for first team football to keep his place in Rob Page's Wales side that has just qualified for the World Cup – and is believed to be very interested in making his move to London permanent.

Liverpool believe that Williams' sparky displays for Wales, including at left wing-back in the most recent play-off fixtures, and his consistent excellence in the Championship mean that they can demand a high fee for his services. Fulham are eager to strengthen at right back ahead of their return to the top flight but the Whites could baulk at such a high valuation, with Ryan Fredericks already linked with a move back to SW6 as a free agent.

'Perfect sense': Danny Murphy says Liverpool defender needs to leave

Danny Murphy has claimed that it makes 'perfect sense' for Neco Williams to leave Liverpool, as he told talkSPORT.

The Liverpool right-back helped Wales qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Sunday, after they beat Ukraine 1-0 in their play-off final in Cardiff.

Williams isn't going to get into Jurgen Klopp's starting XI anytime soon, with Trent Alexander-Arnold running the right side of Liverpool's ship.

That's why Williams moved to Fulham on a loan deal during the January transfer window, with the 21-year-old only earning seven Premier League minutes during the six months before.

Nonetheless, with Wales now heading to Qatar in November, Murphy thinks it's best Williams leaves to get himself ready in the best way possible.

"I think so, (pushing for a move ahead of World Cup)," said Murphy.  "That would make perfect sense

"You wouldn't want to miss out on this wonderful opportunity by just not getting game time, even if it means just a loan.

"He did well actually against Ukraine. In terms of personnel motivation, when you are looking to succeed in your career as a young man and you are trying to, either find a club or establish yourself at a club, it gives you more incentive."

A RETURN TO FULHAM WOULD BE SENSIBLE

Both Liverpool and Fulham will have each other's numbers on speed dial, after concluding deals involving Williams and, most recently, Fabio Carvalho.

So, they might as well dial away and add Williams to their ranks this summer, after they earned promotion back to the Premier League.

It will help Fulham and Marco Silva out as they face a completely different test with the best of the best.

And it allows Williams to get to his peak ahead of the World Cup in November, as well as Liverpool being able to see where Williams is at in his progression by allowing him to compete in the Premier League on a regular basis.

Newcastle United close to completing a £12m deal for Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett amid interest from Fulham after his impressive loan spell with the Magpies

Newcastle are looking to complete a £12million deal for Aston Villa's Matt Targett
Talks took place with the Magpies looking to sign the left-back permanently
Newly-promoted Fulham had also shown an interest in the 26-year-old defender

Newcastle United are looking to close a £12million deal with Aston Villa for left-back Matt Targett.

Talks took place on Tuesday with Newcastle looking to take up the option of signing the 26-year-old following his impressive loan spell.

Fulham had also shown an interest while Newcastle have considered other left-back options.

Newcastle are looking to close a £12million deal with Aston Villa for left-back Matt Targett

The Magpies fortunes changed beyond the January window, after a poor first half of the season.

Boss Eddie Howe began to shape his squad to his liking, bringing in a number of fresh faces.

He signed Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier permanently. Howe also brought in Aston Villa left-back Targett on loan.

Each of those signings made an impact, as Newcastle climbed away from the relegation places, and eventually finished 11th.

Targett missed just one league game following his loan, against Aston Villa, as he could not play against his parent club.

The left-back completed 90 minutes on every other occasion in the league for the Magpies. Indeed, his impact, along with the other signings, was clear to see.

Targett is not expected to be part of Villa's plans going forward after signing Lucas Digne in January, although Newcastle have been exploring their options at left-back.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, 32, is in talks over a move to Championship side Middlesbrough.

Fulham 2021/22: How The Cottagers dominated the Championship – tactical analysis

Fulham were relegated from the Premier League following yet another disappointing campaign last season. A change in management, as well as a slightly updated squad, helped them return to the top division. On their way back up to the top, Fulham blew away their competition. Aleksander Mitrovic scored 43 league goals, breaking the record for the most goals scored in the Championship ever, in a single season. He also broke the record for the most goals ever scored in a 46-game campaign. Fulham also scored 106 goals in the league, becoming only the second side to score over 100 goals in a second division season in the past 20 years, after Manchester City. Fulham overpowered every opponent that stood in the way, as could've been expected with a higher weekly wage and squad value than any other team in the league.

This analysis will be presented as a scout report, exploring how Marco Silva turned Fulham into a rampant side. Last time out in the Championship, Fulham only went up through the playoffs. Now, there was no doubt they'd be getting promoted, thanks to the brilliance of the manager and the individual magic of certain players. This tactical analysis will feature the exceptional tactics that allowed Fulham to dominate the league with such ease.

In possession
Build up

Contrary to what is being spread around the media, Fulham played in a 4-3-3 formation rather than a 4-2-3-1. Fabio Carvalho would sit as the LCM, and Harrison Reed/Tom Cairney were rotated in the RCM position. In the 1st phase, Fulham build in a 4-1 shape. They move the ball around the back four with a lone 6 moving horizontally, to offer a line-breaking pass.

However, that isn't the main theme. The main objective for Fulham when they build out from the back is to bypass the midfield line. The defenders, usually a full back, look to play the ball to either Mitrovic or a near side winger who drops deep. The centre midfielders make 3rd man runs and collect the ball off the forward players and carry the ball into the space behind the player who just played it. In doing so, Fulham's players skip the 2nd phase and try to play quickly, not allowing the opposition to regroup.

Fulham looking to find a third man run

In the Championship, Fulham have found it quite easy to build play from the back, with a 13.85 PPDA against them, meaning that they pull off roughly 14 passes before an opposing team makes a defensive duel. This is a high number, due to the lack of willingness from some teams in the league to press them, offering them lots of time on the ball to complete passes. Although the Fulham players do well to progress play, they are limited technically, and when they come up against more intense teams they have struggled to retain the ball.

Chance creation
The final third is where Fulham thrive. Marco Silva has managed to integrate a fantastic positional play system which has given Fulham a variety of ways to attack the box and score goals.

One way in which this has been achieved is through the use of wide combinations to get into great crossing positions. The use of triangles between the winger, full-back and central midfielder help The Cottagers keep and progress the ball in wide areas in the final third. Fulham have great technical players such as Harry Wilson, Neco Williams and Fabio Carvalho who are all comfortable on the ball and good enough to combine in tight spaces and have been coached certain patterns of play in those areas to get the ball to a free player in the box.

Brilliant combination play down the left-hand side which leads to Carvalho squaring the ball across the goal for an easy Mitrovic finish

These Fulham players also understand and know when to make overlapping/underlapping runs. Silva has improved the decision making of players so they understand which areas of the pitch should be attacked and when. When the ball is with the wide player, the player in the half-spaces understands the movement required to create attract a defender and attack the space behind with underlapping runs. Great physical outlets like Antonee Robinson also understand and excel at creating overlapping runs when they are 2v1 against a full back.

Fulham also utilise the deep crossing ability of Williams and Wilson to deliver the ball into the back post from slightly deeper, when other options are limited. Mitrovic is always at the back post and, due to his size and physicality, usually wins headers where he can either head it back across goal or score the header himself.

A deep cross from Wilson. Mitrovic wins the aerial duel and scores a headed goal

When up against a sturdier defence, Fulham also have great passers in deeper areas who can split defences open with longer-ranged or more incisive passes. Jean Michael Seri has brilliant vision and so he is able to perfectly execute lofted passes over the top of the opposition defence, even if there is not much space in behind. Seri also has the ability to pick out a reverse pass because of his vision, and the excellent movement of the forward players. Another player with a good passing range is Tosin Adarabioyo, who has the ability to play a pass over the top from deep into the space behind a high line. He can also play a line-breaking pass into the final third from his centre-back position.

Out of possession
High press

When they don't have the ball, Fulham attempt to press high in a 4-4-2 when they can. Carvalho plays slightly behind Mitrovic, so he can help him with the press. Fulham ensure that every player in the opposition's build-up phase is being marked man to man, apart from the far side full-back, which forces them to go long. The press is aggressive and compact so it is tough although not impossible, if the players have the quality to play quick, one-touch football, to pass the ball through Fulham.

Fulham press high, man to man. Although Wilson is bit aggressive enough and leaves his man too open

Carvalho pushes further up than Reed due to his lesser physical and defensive qualities, which also allows Carvalho to be closer to goal when they win the ball back.

Mid-block
Fulham drop into a mid-block when a team has progressed the play past the first third. They move into a 4-1-4-1 formation where the central midfield is compact to prevent the ball from progressing through the centre. The two central midfielders will stop the opposing midfield from having time to turn on the ball, whilst the defensive midfielder will shield the ball from reaching the centre forward.

Fulham in a 4-1-4-1 mid-block

Low block
When the opposition reaches the final third, Fulham shift back to a 4-4-2. Carvalho rushes out from the midfield line to press the opposition defenders on the ball, in order to prevent the opposition from sustaining pressure against them. They try to prevent the opposition from having time on the ball and creating a penetrative pass into the box.

Carvalho rushes out from the midfield line to put pressure on the ball. This causes Bristol City to panic and Fulham can regain the ball

Fulham have been vulnerable at times from wide areas when the ball has been played around the front two and players have combined in wide areas. They have conceded chances from crosses, as well as having some defensive 1v1 issues from players such as Robinson. He, at times, gets too close to the opposition and allows players to knock the ball past him without the ability to recover.

In transition
Attacking transition

Marco Silva has given Fulham a number of ways to attack the opposition after winning the ball. They usually attempt to launch the ball into Mitrovic who has the ability to hold the ball up, allowing other players to join the attack. He also has the ability to spin his defender and attack the defence by himself.

Long ball to Mitrovic. He holds it up and lays off Wilson who can carry the ball forwards

If the pass to Mitrovic isn't on, they attempt to play the ball to a full-back who has space in front of him to carry the ball and drive the team forward. The full-backs instantly run forward to help create a 2v1 without giving the opposition winger time to recover. If these options aren't on, Fulham will retain the ball by playing it around the back line.

Defensive transition
When Fulham lose the ball, they aim to counter-press the opposition to force them wide and delay them, giving time for teammates to recover and help defensively. Fulham have very mobile midfielders like Seri and Reed who are also good at defensive duels. This is a very important transitional trait as they can stop attacks before they become dangerous.

Three players close the ball down, preventing it from being played towards goal. The Barnsley player turns away and Wilson proceeds to win the ball back

Some issues that Fulham have are that the keeper isn't very comfortable at sweeping play, forcing the back line to drop slightly deeper than they would like. Furthermore, some defenders like Tim Ream or Robinson aren't great in 1v1 situations, which will become much more evident next season in the Premier League.

Conclusion
Looking forward to next season, Fulham will need to improve the technical quality of certain players if they are to stay up. They will need to replace the exciting young talent that is Carvalho. Improvements on the personnel they have in defence will have to be made if they want to avoid a repeat of the last season in the Premier League. There is no doubt that if the creativity is replaced, Mitrovic will continue to score goals, as he has done for both Fulham and Serbia in the past year. All in all, it is clear to see what Marco Silva wants from his players. All that has to be done is improve the quality among the squad and they will cause problems for the top teams.

Fulham dealt blow as Newcastle United close in on deal for Aston Villa defender Matt Targett

Fulham are poised to miss out on re-signing Aston Villa's Matt Targett to Newcastle United, as per a report by the Daily Mail.

Fulham are keen to bring the left-back back to Craven Cottage following their promotion from the Championship.

Targett, 26, had an impressive loan spell with the London club back in 2018.

However, the Daily Mail claim he is closing in on a £12million permanent switch to St. James' Park.

Blow for Fulham

Fulham have an important summer ahead of them and need to ensure that they get their recruitment right to avoid a season of struggle in the Premier League.

Marco Silva has experience of managing at that level before with Hull City, Watford and Everton but may feel he has a point to prove next term.

You can see why the Cottagers want Targett back as he is experienced, already knows the club and did well on loan at Newcastle United during the second-half of the last campaign.

They will have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements though and they still have plenty of time before they are back for pre-season to add more strength into their ranks.

Targett has been on the books at current club Aston Villa since 2019 after joining them from Southampton and he has since played 89 times for the Midlands club in all competitions, chipping in with three goals.

He was given the green light to head out on loan to the Toon Army in January and is now set to sign for them on a long-term basis in a blow to Fulham.

Liverpool looking for a 'fair price'....they do irony very well (a bit like brassy & goldy Baldrick)
