Who could Fulham get from the free agent market?

George Rossiter scours the free agent pool to see if there are any bargains to be had ahead of our pre-World Cup run of eight games.

Other than being Fulham greats, what do Micky Adams, Kit Symons, Mark Schwarzer and Danny Murphy have in common? They all signed for Fulham as free agents. After Marco Silva and the club released their registered squad list for the Premier League season, one space is left, and it could potentially be filled by a free signing if necessary.

The gap that needs filling
A lot of fans agree that while Fulham have had a fantastic window, spending cleverly on quality players, we may be light in midfield. Nathaniel Chalobah appears the only real deputy for Reed and Palhinha, even with Onomah finding his way onto the squad list. With Palhinha vulnerable to suspensions, which midfielders are available on the market? Here are a couple of options...

Nemanja Radoja
The Serbian international has recently become a free agent after nearly a decade of playing in La Liga, culminating in 220 appearances combined for Celta Vigo and Levante, the latter of which he played for until his release this summer. Making his international debut in 2016, Radoja also has experience playing in the Europa League for Celta and Serbian side FK Vojvodina Novi Sad. The Serb is a combative holding midfielder and would add much needed depth, quality and experience to the midfield ranks at Craven Cottage.

Fabian Delph
Delph is available after a recent spell at Goodison Park, and has amassed 204 Premier League appearances during spells at Aston Villa, Manchester City and Everton. In that time, Delph accumulated 20 caps for England alongside two Premier League titles at the Etihad. At 32 years old, he may no longer be in his prime, but still has a lot to offer. Not only has he shown himself to be a combative midfielder who isn't afraid of a tackle, but his versatility is something Marco Silva would cherish, as Delph showed especially well, filling in at left-back for City.

A sensible option for depth
Injuries and suspensions happen, so having a utility man anywhere in the squad is always welcome. Take a Bobby De-Cordova Reid or an Ola Aina. That sort of player who can play many positions is vital. Equally, there will be certain positions, such as in the centre of defence, where if an injury crisis arises, having multiple bodies in one position will help to avoid filling square holes with a circular peg, so to say.

Matej Vydra
Obviously Fulham have heavily strengthened their attacking options, especially on Deadline Day with the acquisitions of Dan James, Willian and Carlos Vinicius. However, with Wilson and Solomon sustaining mid to long-term recent injuries and Willian and James not currently tied down for next season in any capacity, a forward capable of playing anywhere across the front-line with recent Premier League experience who could stick around for a few seasons would be sensible. Someone who fills that quota is Matej Vydra, recently of Burnley.

Havard Nordtveit
Hear me out. Granted if I wanted someone to return I could have chosen Adel Taarabt, or Zakaria Labyad, but this one makes a bit more sense. While Nordveit's previous spell at the club in the second half of the 2018/19 season was nothing spectacular, he was hardly a failure in a failing team – he was solid. The Norwegian international has 52 caps and was recently released by Hoffenheim, of whom he came on loan from a few years ago. He would prove an experienced figure in the camp. Furthermore, the man has plenty of experience stepping into a holding midfielder role, a position we need, as well as offering another steady option at centre-back if problems arise there.

The dream return
Mousa Dembele
Do I think bringing in a 35-year-old recently released by Chinese side Guangzhou City is sensible? Probably not. Do I think Dembele will be the player he was at Fulham a decade ago, earning himself a move to Tottenham? Probably not. Do I dream of a midfield pairing of Palhinha and Dembele where Fulham literally never ever lose the ball in the middle of the park? Every single night.

The dream... full stop?
Luis Suarez
Granted, this idea is absolutely bonkers. 68 goals in 132 caps for Uruguay, 195 goals for Barcelona, 111 for Ajax, 82 for Liverpool, 34 for Atletico Madrid etc... Suarez is undoubtedly one of the best of this generation. But the legendary striker will leave his contract with Nacional when the Uruguayan domestic season comes to a close in the Autumn, so who knows, stranger things have happened... right?

How the Premier League's Team of the Season looks so far - including Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham & Crystal Palace stars

Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham and Crystal Palace all have players featuring in WhoScored's Premier League Team of the Season.

The London clubs have all enjoyed a very positive start to the Premier League season - for the most part.

Arsenal currently sit top of the league table with Tottenham only a point behind, while Fulham and Brentford have also had a solid start to the campaign.

However, Crystal Palace have so far only earned one victory in six matches, while Chelsea are nervously awaiting Graham Potter's first league match since Thomas Tuchel was sacked earlier this month.

The Gunners have been brilliant in the first couple of months and have seen their youth shine so far - especially the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard in their attack.

WhoScored have named their Premier League Team of the Season so far based on player ratings - featuring two Arsenal stars and another three players from various London clubs.

Here is the Premier League's Best XI - according to WhoScored...
GK - Jordan Pickford (Everton)
Rating: 7.3

While the England international was sidelined for Everton's win over West Ham, he has continued to impress in between the sticks and has only conceded six goals in six Premier League matches.

While they have struggled at the other end of the pitch, the Toffees have conceded the same amount of goals this season as Man City - and less than the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.

RB - Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)
Rating: 7.3

Kieran Trippier has been exceptional for Newcastle United as he begins his first full season back in the Premier League.

With the likes of Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold struggling so far, the Magpies ace is looking like England's most promising right-back ahead of the World Cup.

CB - Fabian Schar (Newcastle)
Rating: 7.3

Fabian Schar has featured in all but one of Newcastle's opening seven fixtures - scoring a wonder goal in their opening day win over Nottingham Forest last month.

The Swiss international has conceded five goals so far - three of which came in a dramtic 3-3 draw against Man City.

CB - Joachim Andersen (Crystal Palace)
Rating: 7.3

Crystal Palace have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season, picking up only one win.

However, Joachim Anderson and Marc Guehi have continued to impress at the back after a brilliant first campaign last time out.

LB - Joao Cancelo (Man City)
Rating: 7.5

Joao Cancelo has been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the past two seasons and looks to have continued his brilliant form into the new campaign.

The 28-year-old has played a key part in their opening seven matches - conceding only six goals and also scoring in their 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

CM - Kevin De Bruyne (Man City)
Rating: 7.8

It comes as no surprise that Kevin De Bruyne has had another brilliant couple of months in the Premier League, scoring once and providing six assists.

The Belgian is thriving with Erling Haaland ahead of him and is on course for another sensational campaign.

CM - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham)
Rating: 7.5

The Dane is at the centre of a huge season for Tottenham as they finally look to challenge at the top after a long period of uncertainty.

Hojbjerg has scored twice and provided an assist in Spurs' first seven matches - working very well alongside Rodrigo Bentancur in the midfield.

RW - Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
Rating: 7.3

Despite arguably being forced out the picture by the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard, Saka has still had a very good season so far and has picked up four assists in seven games.

The winger looks set to play his part in a very memorable campaign for Arsenal, with their young attack proving to be deadly so far.

LW - Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)
Rating: 7.5

Another Arsenal star that shows how brilliant their youngsters have been so far is Martinelli.

The Brazilian looks to have massively improved on last season - scoring three goals in his first six matches.

ST - Erling Haaland (Man City)
Rating: 8.1

Erling Haaland has arguably been the best player in the Premier League this season - bagging a whopping 14 goals in all competitions.

To put it into perspective - Mohamed Salah scored seven goals in his first ten appearances during his record-breaking 2017/18 campaign.

ST - Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham)
Rating: 7.8

The Fulham striker has finally found success in the Premier League after only managing a combined total of 14 goals in his previous two seasons in the top flight.

Mitrovic is already close to half that total this time round, scoring six goals in seven matches - making him the joint-second top goalscorer with Harry Kane.

Brighton and Hove Albion in the EFL: How is Anthony Knockaert getting on these days?

Brighton were once an unstoppable force in the EFL before they were a very good Premier League outfit.

The Seagulls have gone from strength-to-strength in the top flight under boss Graham Potter and even with the manager having now departed for Chelsea, they'll feel they can continue this upwards progression. They've pulled results off against some of the best teams in the division and they've even looked like potential European contenders.

Before all of that though, they were a Championship outfit. Stuck in the league, they needed somebody to fire them out of the division and into the promised land of the Premier League. Step up Anthony Knockaert, who played in over 100 games for the side during his time there and bagged 25 goals.

He regularly controlled games and as his team were promoted, he claimed the Championship Player of the Year gong. But how has he got on since leaving the side?

After his Brighton promotion and some time in the top flight, he was poached by Fulham on a short-term basis. After featuring regularly for them – albeit not managing the same totals that he produced with Brighton – the Cottagers decided to seal a permanent move for the player. However, after signing for them on a full-time basis, he could manage just a further eight games for the team so far.

He is still a Fulham player as things stand but has had to spend the last two seasons out on loan to get playing time. He was sent out to Nottingham Forest last time around, where he featured regularly in the Championship again with 34 appearances. He helped them to a second tier promotion, as he had with Brighton, and has now been sent out on a short-term basis again.

This time, it is a different kind of challenge for Knockaert.

The forward has signed for Volos in Greece and has yet to feature for the side – but considering his experience and ability, the games should come a lot more frequently for the player than they have at Fulham.

Newcastle United: Callum Wilson should be fit for Fulham clash

Newcastle United should have striker Callum Wilson available for next weekend's Premier League clash with Fulham.

That is according to Newcastle United journalist Aaron Stokes, who was speaking on the Everything is Black and White podcast, following Eddie Howe's side's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Wilson suffered a hamstring injury in the club's 3-3 draw with Manchester City at the end of August, having to leave the pitch after 70 minutes.

There was hope that the 30-year-old would make a return to St. James' Park last weekend, but Howe decided against risking the striker and left him out of the squad.

But Stokes believes that there's a very good chance that Wilson will be fit for the Magpies' trip to Craven Cottage, where they take on Fulham in their next game on 1st October.

"Wilson, I would say is probably the most likely [to be fit out of the club's injured players] given that, you know, apparently he was very, very close to making the squad on Saturday," Stokes told the Everything is Black and White podcast.

"Eddie Howe and the team sort of took the late decision that Wilson wouldn't be involved, but it looks like he's sort of back up to speed."

TIF Thoughts on Stokes' comments
We believe that Newcastle fans will be delighted to have Wilson back fit for their next game, with Howe's side struggling to create and take chances without the forward's firepower this season.

The former Bournemouth striker has scored 22 goals and provided 5 assists since joining Newcastle for £20m in the summer of 2020, including two goals in three Premier League appearances already so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, we believe that Howe could do with that extra attacking option in Wilson, and will be delighted to have him back at his disposal for the next game.

"Inside the box, he's a joke" – Fulham man sends out warning to national team about 'complete' teammate

As Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz had this week a word with ESPN Brasil, he brought a little advice for the players from the national team who are facing one of his teammates at Craven Cottage.

Since Brazil are playing the World Cup opening match against Serbia, the 21-year-old talked about Aleksandar Mitrovic, who could apparently cause some problems to Thiago Silva and Marquinhos at the start of the tournament.

"It's hard to give advice to these guys. They are the greats. Mitrovic, inside the box, he's a joke. He comes out to play very well, he is a complete striker. It's complicated," Muniz told ESPN Brasil.

Despite belonging to Fulham and having a contract with the club until 2026, Rodrigo Muniz is currently loaned out to Middlesbrough, where he continues to gain experience in the Championship.

Playing for Boro this season, he has two goals and five assists.

The striker joined the Whites on an €8m deal from Flamengo in the summer of 2021, and had eight goals in 28 appearances in his first season at the Craven Cottage, helping the club to get the promotion to the Premier League.

However, the competition for a place in the team, including with Mitrovic, was one of the reasons he went to get more minutes somewhere else.

Mitro & João Goals Nominated

Fulham have got two nominations in the Premier League's Budweiser Goal of the Month shortlist.

Aleksandar Mitrović's bending strike at Tottenham Hotspur and João Palhinha's stunning first time hit last time out against Nottingham Forest have both made the cut.

Their competition comes from two Ivan Toney and two Son Heung-min strikes, as well as efforts from Philip Billing and Alexis Mac Allister.

You can show your support for Mitro or João at the below link, with the voting closing at midday on Monday.

Assessing Joao Palhinha and his role in Fulham's fine start

Fulham have certainly defied pre-season expectations. Many tipped the Cottagers to drop straight back into the Championship once more and to live up to their yo-yo tag in the process, yet after seven games, they occupy a spot inside the top six. Admittedly they have played a match more than some of those around them, yet to have accrued 11 points so far, a figure it took until the 15th game to reach in their last Premier League campaign, is commendable to say the least.

Marco Silva deserves plenty of praise for the way he has masterminded their fine start to 2022/23, especially as Fulham have already played established top six trio Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham. Granted, Fulham earned just one point from those three games, yet importantly they are picking up points elsewhere.

They've beaten Brentford, Brighton and Nottingham Forest and do, in theory, have a navigable October that means they should continue to gradually pick up points. This comes also after a lack of investment in the squad ahead of the start of the season last month. While Fulham have previously overspent on new faces, with a raft of new additions failing to have the desired effect at Craven Cottage, Silva did bemoan the lack of action in the market prior to their campaign getting underway against Liverpool at the start of August.

However, Fulham did make one crucial addition before the season kicked off. At the start of July, the west London side confirmed the signing of Joao Palhinha. The 27-year-old had previously been linked with a Premier League switch, yet Sporting CP had rejected the chance to cash in on the Portugal international. A reported £20m bid from Fulham was too good to turn down and Sporting's loss has certainly been Fulham's gain.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been the stand out performer in west London this season, the Serb rattling in six league goals for Silva's side; only Erling Haaland (11) has more in England's top tier. His goalscoring exploits have drawn widespread adulation, and deservedly so, with Mitrovic previously shining in the Championship, only to struggle in the Premier League, his 43-goal haul testament to the former.

Yet while Fulham have been excellent going forward, it would have been far worse without Palhinha operating at the base of the midfield. The Portugal international has formed an impressive partnership with Harrison Reed in the middle of the park in Silva's favoured 4-2-3-1 setup with his WhoScored rating of 7.06 the second best of all Fulham players.

Fulham have conceded 11 league goals this season, the fifth most in the division, yet Palhinha has brought about some much-needed defensive resolve that had been found wanting in previous seasons on the back of their promotion. Too often, newly promoted sides will focus their efforts in the market in strengthening in attack without working on the defence, and this has proven the downfall of previous Fulham sides.

Palhinha, though, has brought the necessary solidity from Lisbon to London. Indeed, Palhinha has made more tackles (32) than any other player in Europe's top five leagues this season, and this means that Fulham are actually conceding fewer shots per game (13.4) than the likes of Tottenham (15) and Manchester United (14.7).

When holding midfielders are signed, they rarely earn the plaudits, however Fulham are sat where they are in the league at this stage in part due to Palhinha's hard work off the ball and his relative composure when he does win possession. A pass success rate of 81.7% is the second best of all Fulham players and while there is work to be done to improve upon this return, relative to their lowly possession average of 41.9%, that the third lowest, Palhinha is carrying out his necessary duties well.

Conversely, a player in Palhinha's role for a Fulham side that sees little of the ball will often find themselves in hot water with officials. While he has committed just nine fouls across seven appearances this season - Joelinton, Boubacar Kamara and Scott McTominay (all 15) lead this metric - Palhinha has already been booked five times this season, and it means he'll miss the welcome of Newcastle after the international break.

Palhinha's enforced absence will impact Fulham's quest for another three points, yet the positives certainly outweigh this negative in the player's early months in England. Mitrovic's six goals may have earned Fulham five points this season, yet the 28-year-old, and his attacking teammates, have the freedom to hurt opponents due to Palhinha's positional discipline and willingness to sit deep and shield the defence, something he has done to a very high standard during his short time at Craven Cottage.

Bowie opens Scotland U21s account
Kieron Bowie opened his Scotland under 21s account this afternoon as his side beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Belfast.

The Fulham forward, on loan at Northampton Town this season, opened the scoring with a superb header that beat Dermot Mee from a set-piece with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Bowie's Fulham team-mate Conor McAvoy made his debut at this level and did brilliantly to clear off the line with the game still scoreless after Dale Taylor had chipped Kieran Slicker. After Bowie's header, Liverpool teenager Ben Doak doubled the Scots' lead and Josh Mulligan made it 3-0.

You can watch Bowie's brilliant header below:

Chris McKee scored a late consolation for Northern Ireland, with Ross McCausland having an effort scrambled off the line in the closing seconds. The two teams will face each other again in another friendly in Paisley on Sunday. Bowie has scored twice in ten appearances for Northampton this season with the Cobblers currently sitting in third in the League Two table.

Former Fulham boss linked with return to management

Could this ex-Fulham manager be in line for a new move?

Former Fulham boss Scott Parker is being linked with a move to OGC Nice following his departure from AFC Bournemouth.

The Cherries sacked him after their 9-0 loss to Liverpool late last month.

Parker, 41, guided the Dorset outfit to promotion from the Championship in the last campaign.

According to a report by FootMercato, he is now in the frame for the Nice job.

Fulham left-back Joe Bryan is currently on loan with the Ligue 1 side, whilst Kasper Schmeichel, Aaron Ramsey and Ross Barkley also play for them these days.

Fulham spell
Parker was appointed as manager at Craven Cottage back in 2019 in his first managerial role.

He won an immediate promotion back to the top flight with the London club after they beat Brentford in the play-off final at Wembley.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic man couldn't keep them up the year after and subsequently left for Bournemouth that summer.

Fulham then turned to Marco Silva and the rest is history. They stormed to the second tier title last term and have since adapted well to the step up a division.

They are 6th in the table right now after three wins from their opening seven games.

Andreas Pereira's 'role' in Manchester United missing out on Brazilian midfielder Liverpool now want

Andreas Pereira spent last season playing alongside a rumoured Man United target at Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

Joao Gomes is one of the new names to keep an eye out for in future transfer markets.

The 21-year-old has been a regular face in the midfield of Flamengo in his native Brazil since 2020.

Recent reports suggest that he has attracted the interest of Manchester United and Liverpool, with both clubs said to be weighing up a potential move for him in the upcoming January transfer window. Now, it has emerged a former United player could potentially have been involved in a swap deal last summer.

Andreas Pereira ended an 11-year stay at Old Trafford this summer, joining Fulham. But his final loan spell while still officially a United player came with Flamengo, where he played alongside Gomes in midfield. Now, talkSPORT claim a swap deal was potentially in the offing that would have seen Pereira stay in Brazil permanently and Gomes move to Old Trafford.

Tim Vickery, South American football expert, told the station: "It looked like they [United] might have been interested in him [Joao Gomes] when Andreas Pereira was on loan from United at Flamengo.

"There was speculation that in exchange for that deal they might take Joao Gomes, but they didn't. In the end Pereira ended up going to Fulham."

Despite United clearly holding interest in the youngster, Gomes recently used his Instagram account to profess his desire to play for one of their biggest rivals. He posted: "Liverpool are a team I'd play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football."
