Lookman: from Everton and Fulham flop to top of Serie A with Atalanta

Ademola Lookman has been one of Atalanta's key players so far this season after disappointing spells with Everton and Fulham.

The 24-year-old moved to the Gewiss Stadium from Leicester City in a €9m deal in the summer and has already left his mark with two goals and three assists in eight Serie A games so far this season.

His last goal against Fiorentina yesterday, helped La Dea take all three points and join Napoli at the top of the Serie A table.

After finishing last season outside Europe, Gian Piero Gasperini's side have begun 2022-23 on a high note and are the only unbeaten team in Italy along with the Partenopei. They may not be as spectacular as in the past, but they have the less beaten defence in Italy's top flight with just three goals conceded in eight matches.

Lookman is giving a crucial contribution up front despite not being a regular starter yet. The Nigeria international has played three games from the start but has featured in every Serie A match so far.

Lookman was born in London in 1997 and is a product of Charlton Academy. He played for England's youth teams including 11 matches with the U21 squad, but eventually picked the senior Nigeria squad, making his debut this past Match, months before his move to Italy.

"It's been a long time since I've known about the club's interest and obviously, I am here and ready to get to work," Lookman said in August, in his first interview as an Atalanta player.

"For me, the platform here is amazing, it's a massive club in Italy, they play attacking football so for me it was an easy decision to make."

His pace and versatility have proved to be key for La Dea as Gasp has used the product of Charlton Academy as a centre forward, support striker or right winger.

Lookman also played for Everton, Leicester City and Fulham in England, but struggled to impose himself in the Premier League. He managed four goals in 48 appearances with the Toffees, eight in 42 matches with the Foxes and four in 35 with the Cottagers.

He didn't play any of the two Europa League games between Everton and Atalanta in 2017-18, but La Dea was somehow in his destiny.

The 24-year-old spent a year and a half on loan at Leipzig, first in 2018, from January to June, and then in 2019-20.

He scored six Premier League goals in 26 appearances with the Foxes last season, but the early signs in his first months with Atalanta are even more exciting.

Fulham to miss former Chelsea midfielder for West Ham clash after Newcastle United red card

West Ham United next face London rivals Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday and Marco Silva's side have a suspension blow going into the game after their 4-1 loss to Newcastle United

Fulham will be without midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah for their Premier League trip to West Ham United on Sunday.

The Hammers host the Cottagers in a London derby on Sunday afternoon, a game where the Irons will be looking to record back-to-back wins for the first time in England's top-flight this season.

Going into the game, Fulham boss Marco Silva will be without midfielder Chalobah for the game due to suspension. The former Chelsea and Napoli midfielder was shown a straight red inside ten minutes for Fulham last Saturday after a horror challenge on Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff, leading to a 4-1 defeat for Silva's side last time out.

Chalobah's foul will lead to a three-match suspension for him, keeping him out of the London derby against West Ham this weekend. However, Fulham will be boosted by the return of Joao Palhinha, who missed that defeat to the Magpies serving a suspension of his own.

West Ham are expected to have a near fully available squad at David Moyes' disposal. However, that could change following Thursday's trip to Anderlecht in the Europa Conference League.

Winger Maxwel Cornet is a doubt for the meeting with Fulham due to a calf injury picked up in Saturday's 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Centre-back Nayef Aguerd is still on his road to recovery from an ankle injury sustained in pre-season.

Update emerges regarding player Fulham reportedly approached in the last window

Latest Fulham transfer news emerges on Monday

Blackburn Rovers are reportedly planning contract talks with Fulham-linked Ben Brereton-Diaz.

The Chile international is in the final year on his deal which expires at the end of the season.

His side risk losing him for free next summer (June 2023) if they don't cash in on him in the January transfer window or agree terms over a contract extension.

According to a report by the Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers want to 'step up' negotiations with their main man.

Fulham target
Fulham are claimed to have made offers for Brereton-Diaz in the last window with the latest one being on deadline day, as per the Daily Mail.

He ended up staying at Ewood Park beyond the deadline but his long-term future continues to be up in the air.

The former Nottingham Forest man linked up with Blackburn back in 2018 and initially struggled to find his feet in Lancashire.

However, things changed dramatically for him in the last campaign and he went on to score 22 goals in all competitions.

Brereton-Diaz has chipped in with four so far this term and his team currently sit 6th in the table.

Time will tell whether Fulham rekindle their interest in him this winter and Marco Silva will need to start making transfer plans soon.

The door will certainly swing open for him next summer if he doesn't put pen-to-paper on fresh terms with Blackburn.

Five-star Fulham Women make easy FA Cup progress
Fulham Women eased into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup after firing five goals past Newhaven Ladies on the south coast yesterday afternoon.

Steve Jaye made several changes to his regular starting line-up for Fulham's first Cup fixture of the new campaign. Three members of the Whites' new under-18 development squad stepped up to senior duty including Holly Cowan, who replaced Edie Kelly in goal, whilst Milla Lewis and Ilana Harris-Walters were named amongst the substitutes. The Whites were on the front foot from the outset but disciplined Newhaven defending meant the visitors had to wait until nine minutes before the break to open the scoring.

The experienced Annie Thomas played a big part in breaking the deadlock with a lovely bit of skill to keep an attack going and she supplied a superb cross for Helen Ogle to convert. Thomas was the provider for Charmaine True to make it two six minutes later with the former Pompey striker finding the bottom corner with an emphatic finish. The in-form forward added a third two minutes after the interval by skipping round the goalkeeper to make the most of a beautiful through ball from Megalie Mendes before Ogle headed in another seconds later from Tia Foreman's terrific corner.

True turned provider ten minutes into the second period playing in Heasman, who clinically rounded off the scoring on an excellent afternoon for Jaye's side. The Whites have been drawn at home to Maidenhead in the next round of the FA Cup – with the third round qualifying tie due to be played at Motspur Park on Sunday 23 October, with kick off scheduled for 2.30pm.

FULHAM WOMEN (4-3-3): Cowan; Allen, Konan, Southgate, Bird; Foreman, Thomas, Lambird; Ogle, Heasman, True. Subs: Stormer, Mendes, Lewis, Harris-Walters.

GOALS: Ogle (36, 48), True (42, 47), Heasman (55).

Watch Fulham U21s take on Valencia on Wednesday
The Premier League International Cup returns after three years on Wednesday – and Fulham's first fixture sees Steve Wigley's under 21s take on Spanish side Valencia at Craven Cottage.

Fulham's under 21s have made a strong start to life back in the top flight of youth football and beat Everton 2-0 at Motspur Park last Friday evening. The Whites' promotion last term earned them the right to take on twelve of the best academy outfits from across the continent and Fulham have been drawn in Group A alongside Blackburn, Leicester, Wolves, Porto, Valenica, Wolfsburg and Celtic.

Sides from the same national association can't play each other in the group stage so the final standings will be worked out based on fixtures between the English clubs and their continental counterparts. The top two from each group plus the best pair of third-placed teams will progress to the knockout phase of the tournament.

Fulham's first game will be held at Craven Cottage and will be the first time some of Wigley's side will have played a competitive fixture at the club's historic home. Tickets are available in the Johnny Haynes Stand priced at £3 for adults, £1 for concessions and current season ticket holders can attend for just £1. You can purchase online now, by visiting the ticket office in Stevenage Road or calling 0203 871 0810 between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

For those who haven't been down to Motspur Park to watch Fulham's next generation of talent, the under 21s play an adventurous style similar to Marco Silva's first team and have a number of gifted youngsters knocking on the door of the senior squad. This immensely likeable bunch of boys would relish as much support as possible, so do try and get down to cheer them on.

If you can't make Wednesday, bear in mind that Fulham's other group fixtures are scheduled to played at Motspur Park – and details of the ticketing arrangements for the games against Porto, who won this competition back-to-back between 2017 and 2018, and Celtic will be made available in due course.
