Is this the reason the Riverside has taken so long?

Interesting read and probably contributed to the delays encountered.

Yes, there are always big risks with civil engineering contracts of this nature and it sounds as though we have hit a big one here.
I bet there are endless discussions going on right now between Fulham and the contractor about a revised programme and extra costs.

RaySmith

Maybe Fulham will refuse to pay  the extra costs for the new stand, and the company will pull it down!

We've been told it was shortage of materials ( I think) but this story suggests another reason: https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/financial/fulham-stadium-subbie-administration-pushes-buckingham-to-loss-16-12-2022/

I don't remember being told that.

As far as I was aware it was because, during the Covid crisis and restrictions, they revaluated the hospitality areas and changed the design to include a new Members Club.

It could be better but it's real life and not a fantasy

Not quite on this topic but I hold a season ticket in the riverside but yesterday sat in the Johnny Haynes stand and I particularly don't like how the corners of the ground have been filled in shutting off the last glimpse anyone had of the river.

I know, I sit in the Hammy End block H7 and used to enjoy a view of the river. it's a shame that has gone but I guess it's all part of improving the stadium, so a small loss for a bigger gain.

Nothing surprising here.
In my, reasonably comprehensive, experience the construction industry has always been very much like the Wild West.
Main contractors tend to act like gangsters and sub-contractors like prostitutes. One way or another somebody ends up dead or screwed.

There should be a monument at Heathrow Airport to commemorate all the contactors and subbies that have gone bust there.
Not that going bust is a big problem. Wipe out all the debts. Quick change of name. And back in the lineup next week.

MickTheBeard

I was told that the cladding firm what does the envelope of the stand went bust last feb.Costing Buckinghams over 7mil which seems to go with the time finishing the glass at the back of the stand and parts of the back of hotel etc.Whether khan keep changing the plans connecting to members club maybe casino who knows, but the inside very sparse,a electrician working their said there is a lot of work to do,I would be surprised if it's ready for next season.Hey Rome wasn't built in a day, well crossrail wasn't.

I thought the new advertising boards on the Upper Tier Riverside look good & expect they'll generate decent income for us.

Logicalman

Interesting that the sub-contractor was a business that was borne some 4 years back off the founder/owners' previous firm going bust! Forunately (for him), the previous owner, Mark Davey, retired a couple of months prior to the firm going under, obviously he could read the writing on the wall it seemed.

Can't understand why we build a 98 mill stand and put temporary wooden huts inside it to sell food and  food and drink from them, when we have perfectly good builders huts to sell our wares without building a expensive stand. to house them. The only good thing is we won't hopefully have Tony's wrestling circus parade adorning our great ground for a while yet.Just imagine the club shop with leotards rather than football shirts.

filham

The bottom line is that things are running very late and no completion date has yet been announced.
Seems as if there are still problems.

HamsterWheel

Bottom line is the Khans have financed and (despite Covid) nearly completed the build of a wonderful stand that shows their long term commitment to the club. The stand sticking out into the tidal river and being consequently being very hard to build. Anyone surprised at a delay obviously hasn't built anything ever!
But some people still want to whine and whinge, best ignored.

Just as a matter of interest do you have expertise in civil engineering?

I ask because you attribute the delays to the piering into the river but to the best of my knowledge that work was completed quite some time back, or have I got that wrong?

HamsterWheel

Yes I have built many things and currently building a £25m thing. Completing the piling doesn't mean the challenges are finished - they still had to barge in the large components!
Not all football stadia can be built in green fields....

My own experience with civil engineering contractors is that they are looking for extras and reasons for delay from day one and it is usual for the client to employ an experienced engineer to manage the job if it is going to be finished close to time. It is also essential to avoid changes if the customer is not to be sucked dry by the smart contractor.

Yes a big thank you to the Khans for giving us a magnificent stadium that generates confidence but a little question mark on their management abilities.

They also need to re evaluate the temperature of the swimming pool, it is nowhere near cold enough, far too warm.

Though, to be fair, from what has been gleaned from this thread, it would appear the delay was, at least in part, to a sub-contractor going boobs up, and so not really within the Khans sphere of influence, as they didn't really directly employ that firm. Perhaps I'm simplifying it too much?

Oh, and no, the only thing I ever buit was doing an old house refurb (floors, CH, electric and plumbing, little plastering + chimney) plus swing set for my children/grandchildren!
