This is why the British get walked over time and time again. Rather than sending a message by not watching (if you are of that opinion) they just can't help but watch out of morbid curiosity. Pretty disappointing but not surprising.

Or maybe the people that watched it did so because of the fact that those clowns weren't actually on it.

I thought MOTD was great. I just want to see the highlights, and the scores if I don't know them already. Nobody seems to like the long-winded boring pundits and their moronic 'analysis'. I think this is an opportunity for the BBC to evolve MOTD, which has looked and sounded dated for years. And please sack Gary Lineker. I don't want to see that overpaid hypocritical tax evader ever again.

Totally agree with St. Andrew. Increased viewing figures is the real general public showing that they are sick to their back teeth of Lineker and Cronies in their mansions trying to become politicians when it suits them. its not the first time Lineker has been warned about BBC rules and he has just blatantly ignored them as if he wants to tempt this current situation. He thinks he will become St. Gary. He tried to impose restrictions for viewers during the World Cup in Qatar with the non broadcast of the Opening Ceremony, surely its the public decision to make a call whether they watch it to not? I've just deleted comments about he's tax issues with HMRC as may have not met rules on this board; but what a hypocrite Mr Lineker is.

Not a regular viewer or a fan but I tuned out of curiosity.  It was an experience similar to watching those slow television programmes like  the canal barge or following the reindeer. Football in its purist form  and truly cathartic especially with something in a small glass. Long may it continue.

I doubt there are millions of people just desperate to see football with no commentary that they have suddenly all started to watch. If they were really out there they would watch with the sound down or record and skip through the pundits. I agree with others that the most likely reason is that they wanted to see the car crash.

I think it is a very well produced  programme, professionally produced, quite a feat to put it all together in the time, and Lineker does a great job holding it all together, and there's a  very good balance between knowledgeable chat and action, with items like goal of the month, etc.-
good entertainment for a Saturday night, and think most of the audience would most definitely prefer the original format to  20 mins of action, no commentary or analysis.

WE are lucky to have it - you never know what you've got till it's gone, and I think the novelty of no commentary, no analysis, would soon wear off for most, in my opinion.

I  prefer some commentary but I don't like all the analysis. The game is so simple you can take a child to watch it and they pick it up very quickly. Gary L can for me speak about anything he chooses but he won't be changing my mind and he won't influence me in any way. But I don't need to hear his opinion on any incident whether it be football related or not. As for punditry I cannot see the point except to make a programme longer. Television companies like football because it is cheap tv. If you stand at a football match and film for  1 1/2 hours you have 1 1/2 hours of content. For a lot of other programmes you may need to shoot for several hours to get that amount of content.
It's not for the director general to tell me what a good broadcaster Gary L is, it's for us the viewers

Football is very simple to understand on a basic level, but if you're telling me you're getting the intricate details and tactical analysis without ex pros weighing in then I think you either have a talent for it or you're not being entirely honest.

I am of the camp that watches replays and highlights on Youtube.  I often mute the sound and just watch the replay.

The programme was only 20 minutes. Even though there was no discussion, the football was condensed to around three or four minutes from each match. Moreover, every piece of action was replayed which meant that the actual game time from each fixture amounted to no more than two minutes.

I don't see this being a successful format in the long run.

but doesn't this show how little actual football is shown and the rest of the normal programme is filled out with talk. I don't think they had much time to sort out a proper programme and if the presenters and pundits are not back next week maybe they will extend it with more highlights. Here in Thailand I get to see true sport highlights on YouTube and every game seems to be 5-6 minutes but with Thai commentary. I really enjoy this format and I can make my own mind up on what I have been watching and not listen to someone else's biased view.
