Why is it that other sports versions of VAR work? Yet VAR seems to have all sorts of problems. Could it be that the Football authorities don't want it to succeed"

Cricket at international level a different form but it works .

It really depends on the subjectivity of the call. In tennis, for example, it works perfectly but that is because there is zero subjectivity involved. The ball is either in or it is out. In football, there are almost zero issues with goal line technology or offsides except for rare circumstances where they mess up drawing the lines. When you get into subjective decisions like was it an intentional handball, was there enough time to react, was there enough contact to give a penalty, etc. it becomes far more controversial and with VAR being done by fellow referees, a lot of times they don't want to overturn what was seen on the field to avoid stepping on toes.

They should use var for off side and to see if the ball has gone out of play. The Lino's and the ref between them should then be able to concentrate on penalty's and free kicks

My feelings are that VAR falls down on the simple statement "clear & obvious error". What constitutes a clear & obvious error is anybody guess. If that was changed to "is there any doubt about the decision" maybe the overall decisions would be better.
