Stats after 7 games

How do our first seven games compared in statistical terms against our previous 16 PL seasons? In some ways not too bad, but in other ways not good at all.

Wins. Our 2 wins this season is pretty normal. In only four of the 16 PL seasons have we won more than 2 of the opening 7 games (the most recent being last season, and the most being 4 wins in 2003/04). We have always won at least 1 of our first 7 PL games.

Points Gained. Our 8 points so far this season is better than 9 of our previous 16 PL seasons. The best points tally after 7 games was in 2003/04 (14 points). The worst? 2020/21 with just 4.

Goals Scored and Conceded. This is where things look less good. We have never scored less than this season's 5 in any previous PL season (though we have managed to score the same number of goals in 2005/06, 2008/09 and 2013/14). Most scored in the first 7 games? 15 in 2003/04 and 2012/13.

Goals conceded at 12 is high, considering we have had three clean sheets. Only in 3 seasons have we conceded more than 12: 2007/08, conceded 14 and nearly went down; and 2018/19 (conceded 16) and 2020/21 (conceded 14) and in both those seasons we were relegated.

GD at -7 is high. Worryingly it has only been matched once (in 2020/21) and been worse once (in 2018/19 at -8) and in both those seasons we went down.

So in summary:

Points so far: pretty much average when compared to our previous 16 PL seasons
Wins so far: ditto
Goals Scored so far: very poor, right down with our worst starts
Goals Conceded so far: ditto
GD so far: ditto

Of course 5 of those shipped goals were to Man City, many sides that stay up comfortably will get hammered by them. Goals scored is the bigger worry.

It has been clear all season that without Mitro we have a huge goal scoring problem, none of the 20 premier clubs have scored less.
Someting needs to change otherwise relegation will again result.

At this point I am not worried about the GD.  We were hammered by City (others will be too) and Brentford was an absolute debacle not of our making.

Two games that should be replayed if you are a Victimpool manager, actually.

We do need to score more and shake of this apathy or whatever it is that is going on though, and I think that we will do that too and ultimately we will stay up comfortably too.

Would be nice if that all started this weekend though, I must admit.
