Fulham 2-1 Arsenal

Bukayo Saka is now Arsenal's top scorer in the Premier League this season with six goals in 2023-24
Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League at new year after a disappointing defeat at Fulham.

Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead inside five minutes but Raul Jimenez equalised on his return from suspension, before Bobby Decordova-Reid scrambled home the winner on the hour.

The loss left Arsenal fourth and two points behind leaders Liverpool, who host Newcastle on New Year's Day.

Fulham are 13th after ending a run of three straight defeats.

Arsenal made the perfect start with a fifth-minute opener following a quick break from the back. Gabriel Martinelli's curling shot from the left was palmed out by former Gunners keeper Bernd Leno, allowing Saka to stick out a right leg and loop the ball into the net from six yards.

But Fulham reacted well and equalised in the 29th minute when Willian, another ex-Arsenal player in the home ranks, fed captain Tom Cairney down the left and his dangerous low cross was swept in by Jimenez.

Marco Silva's men deservedly claimed the winner from a corner when Decordova-Reid stabbed a finish past David Raya following pinball in the box - condemning Arsenal to consecutive losses following the 2-0 home defeat to West Ham on Thursday.

Blunt Arsenal winless in three games
This result and performance was the closing act of a dismal Christmas period for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, which has seen them fail to win in three successive Premier League matches for the first time this season.

They have picked up just one point over the last eight days, and could find themselves five behind leaders Liverpool should the Reds beat Newcastle.

Given Arsenal were top at Christmas after taking a point at Anfield on 23 December, it represents a worrying turnaround which boss Arteta will need to address quickly.

He did make changes here from the loss against West Ham, including starting Eddie Nketiah up front in place of the benched Gabriel Jesus.

But while Nketiah again showed plenty of endeavour, he struggled to make a meaningful impact in attack as Arsenal continue to lack a cutting edge compared to their title rivals - which will only heighten talk of Arteta needing to sign another striker in January.

Saka's goal made him the club's top scorer in the league with six.

Jimenez return fires up Fulham
Starting this game just six points above the drop zone, Fulham were very grateful to welcome back Jimenez, and also Willian from a hamstring injury.

Brazilian Willian - whose three-year contract at Arsenal was ended in 2021 after a difficult year - had missed the previous three league games, all of which Fulham lost without scoring. Jimenez was sent off for a high tackle in the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle and both clearly add extra class to Fulham's attack.

The victory ensured the club did not suffer four consecutive league defeats without scoring for the first time since 1971, and showed where their strengths lie as they bid to climb the table.

Fulham are still seven points worse off than they were after 20 games last season - but with Jimenez back and firing, Silva's worries will be somewhat alleviated.

They could have won by a more comprehensive margin had Raya not made a flying save to deny Cairney in the second half, while Andreas Pereira struck the bar with a late free-kick.

Post-Arsenal Press Conference
Marco Silva believes Fulham's victory over Arsenal was a fair reflection of his side's performance.

The Whites fell behind to an early Bukayo Saka goal, but went on to deliver a sterling display to turn things around courtesy of Raúl Jiménez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid goals.

"Overall, I think we were the best side on the pitch," Silva said. "After conceding the early goal against a team like Arsenal, it shows it's a team that knows really what we wanted from the match, showing the character and the personality to turn it for us.

"The way after that we reacted, the way we played first half was a very, very good level. We mixed our game well, there were moments to start from the back when we beat their pressure, as we know that Arsenal is really strong when they press really high.

"And the way we did it, mixing some moments with going more direct with Raúl, other moments with quality from the back, and when our equalising goal came it was more than fair because they were great moments from ourselves, a very good goal from ourselves, and we deserved it clearly.

"Arsenal had some moments around our box as well, one or two good chances, we had one or two good ones as well.

"Second half, our block was a little bit more low, Arsenal obligated us in the first minutes to go to bit more low, but we controlled really well. I don't remember one chance for Arsenal second half, the way we controlled so well.

"We score from a set-piece, we had more chances, we hit the crossbar, and overall I agree that we were the best team on the pitch and deserved the three points.

"And we deserve the praise because the way they reacted from the early goal and the way they did it was really, really good."

Fulham have been close to a number of scalps against the Premier League's elite recently, without getting over the line, so Silva was naturally delighted to end the calendar year in such a fashion.

"It's really important and, to be honest, in 2023, I think we have been deserving this type of result against top sides, because we have been really so, so close in some moments to getting one – for many reasons, sometimes our fault, sometimes their quality as well, because the details play always a big part in it.

"Of course, it's the best way to finish the year. 2023 has been a great year for Fulham Football Club – the way we did it last season, the way we have been achieving important stages of the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. And for us it was really important to finish on a high.

"We spoke before the match that clearly it was our ambition to finish on a high. The players deserve it for all the work they have been doing, our fans deserve it as well, but overall the Club deserves to finish on a high.

"It in the best way really – to play against a top side, a title contender. And to do it at the Cottage is the perfect afternoon for us."

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Gunners are handed their second straight defeat in major blow to their title hopes as Raul Jimenez and Bobby Decordova-Reid goals help Marco Silva's men come from behind after Bukayo Saka's opener

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with a tap-in before Raul Jimenez pulled Fulham level before half time
Bobby Decordova-Reid then put the hosts ahead to deal a huge blow to Arsenal as their title bid stutters

A quick glance at last season's Premier League table will tell you Arsenal lost six matches en route to finishing second by a five point margin to all-conquering Manchester City. They aren't leaving themselves with much wriggle room, are they?

Here at a rain soaked Craven Cottage, the Gunners suffered their fourth loss of the campaign. If Mikel Arteta's side are to topple City, then they'll need a near perfect second half of the season.

Therein lies the problem for Arsenal; they are anything but perfection right now.

The winter break can't come soon enough for the north Londoners, who look a team in dire need of a reset.

But the damage may already have been done. Consecutive losses following Thursday's home defeat by West Ham. One victory in six matches. No matter how you spin it, it's not championship winning form.

Fulham dealt Arsenal a huge blow to their title hopes as they secured a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Craven Cottage

The Gunners have now endured back-to-back defeats to cap off their impressive 2023 on a low note in west London

Fulham were excellent. Marco Silva's team sensed blood and went for the kill.

They were rewarded for their bravery and resilience. But make no mistake, this wasn't a smash-and-grab raid; Fulham dominated for much of this encounter.

By the end, they could have won by more. For Arsenal, it is the margin between themselves at the top of the table that is becoming a concern.

Having taken the lead here in west London, Arsenal will reflect on this miserable New Year's Eve loss with major disappointment.

Five minutes was all it took for Arsenal to fire themselves ahead, Bukayo Saka tapping home from six yards after Bernd Leno parried Gabriel Martinelli's initial shot into the England star's path.

Mexican forward Raul Jimenez then struck the equaliser to ensure Fulham went in at half time with the scores level

Bobby Decordova-Reid then sent the home fans into delirium on New Year's Eve as he prodded home to give Fulham a big win

The counter attack was swift and ruthless, mere seconds after the ball left the clutches of David Raya's palms Arsenal were ahead.

The Gunners should really have strolled home from that point. But something isn't clicking for Arteta's team at the moment.

Fulham, coming off back-to-back Premier League losses, were on the ropes. Arsenal should have finished them off.

But credit to Silva's men, their response was stirring.

Raul Jimenez, back in the side after suspension, should have done better from Antonee Robinson's cut-back in the 14th minute before Willian fired narrowly wide with a curling effort.

Robinson, in particular, was impressing for Fulham. Working diligently to placate Saka's threat down the Arsenal right whilst posing his direct opponent and Ben White defensive problems of their own.

Joao Palhinha versus Declan Rice was an intriguing battle in central midfield. Arsenal recruitment staff like the look of Fulham's midfield maestro, it's not hard to understand why.

Fulham's deserved equaliser arrived just before the half-hour mark, Jimenez sliding home Tom Cairney's low cross.

Arteta will bemoan the simplicity of it all. Once Calvin Bassey dispossessed Saka deep inside Fulham's half, the hosts were level within the blink of an eye.

But this was no more than Arsenal deserved amid a first-half performance not befitting a team who would finish 2023 as league leaders with victory.

Clearly Fulham deserve their fair share of recognition. But Arsenal were disjointed and weary.

Arteta refreshed his team after a busy festive period, Eddie Nketiah made a rare start ahead of the benched Gabriel Jesus, Jakub Kiwior started ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko - who was carrying a minor calf strain - while Kai Havertz returned from suspension to replace Leandro Trossard.

The fresh legs didn't make the desired impact, however.

Kiwior, especially, was struggling at left back. Zinchenko has been criticised for his defensive work in recent weeks; the Ukrainian was conspicuous by his absence here.

It was no surprise then that Takehiro Tomiyasu, who hadn't played for four weeks due to a calf injury, was introduced at half-time to put Kiwior out of his misery.

Fulham, though, smelt blood. The Cottagers were ahead on the hour, Bobby De Cordova-Reid blasting home after Rice and Tomiyasu both failed to deal with Willian's corner.

Craven Cottage was raucous. Arteta was just as frantic on the touchline as he tried to rouse his players.

The Arsenal manager's response was to throw on Trossard and Jesus, who replaced defender White as the Gunners threw caution to the wind.

As the game reached its final 15 minutes, the elements turned biblical - but it was Arsenal in desperate need of divine intervention.

Fulham themselves recovered from a run of three straight losses as they put in an incredible display to shock the title-chasers

Superb Fulham grab first win over Arsenal in more than a decade to hurt Gunners' title bid
Fulham (1) 2 Jimenez 28, Decordova-Reid 59

Arsenal (1) 1 Saka 15

Fulham stunned the Gunners to claim a first win over the north Londoners for nearly 12 years - denying them top spot in table in the process.

Not since that last-minute winner from Bobby Zamora in January 2012 had the Whites tasted victory over a team which had won five in a row at the Cottage - the last four with some considerable ease. But as was the case in the season's first meeting between the clubs at the Emirates - which finished 2-2 - Fulham found a way of upsetting the odds.

They fully deserved the win secured when another Bobby - Decordova-Reid - turned inside the box to fire home.

This felt like a magnificent statement win for the Cottagers - an ideal way to sign off for the year. But for Arsenal, the reality of tired-looking back-to-back defeats will have dented the soaraway ambitions they expected to carry into New Year's Day.

The Gunners' desire to make amends for the shock home loss to west Ham in midweek was obvious at the outset, and it was not long before they gained the upper hand.

Gaby Martinelli cut in from the left and pinged a low shot that Bernd Leno could only parry out to Bukayo Saka - whose reaction touch sent the ball looping into the net. The Whites hoped in vain for a VAR reprieve but Saka was deemed just onside.

The Whites soon responded with a good move though, and it was a portent of their desire to make this fixture count in their favour for once.

Willian and Antonee Robinson combined down the left channel to set up a chance for Raul Jimenez. The Mexican, just back from suspension, shot straight at David Raya. Willian then curled just off target.

With Fulham increasingly having a say in proceedings, they drew level when Calvin Bassey managed to wrestle the ball off Saka and in the counter-attack, Willian found Tom Cairney on the overlap and the Scot's perfect cross fell to Jimenez for the striker's fourth goal in as many games.

And the Whites took a lead they fully merited just before the hour mark when Willian's corner was nodded back towards the six yard box by Joaoa Palhinha and after pinball in the box off two green-shirted Arsenal players, the ball fell into the orbit of Decordova-Reid and he made no mistake.

There were a handful of good chances for Arsenal that might have altered the picture. Martinelli slid a shot inches wide in the first half and Saka skied a great chance over soon after Fulham had taken the lead.

But the general sense of frustration which dogged them in the Hammers game was back in earnest once more for Mikel Arteta's men. They had plenty of the ball, but struggled to do much with it.

Cairney came close to adding to Arsenal's woes with a typically well struck effort from outside the box that Raya just about managed to claw to safety.

But equally typical was the way Palhinha dived in for a crunching tackle to deny Saka as the winger was about to pull the trigger. His firt-pump to the fans spoke volumes of the prevailing mood by the end.

With home fans on their feet for the last knockings, sub Andreas Pereira almost bagged a third with a free-kick which thudded back off the bar.

This was a win which felt every bit as impressive as those recent 5-0 successes at home to Forest and West Ham, which have helped send them up to 13th in the table.

Whites: (4-2-3-1) Leno - Castagne, Tosin, Bassey, Robinson - Joao Palhinha, Cairney (Reed 90+2) - Decordova-Reid (Diop 80), Iwobi (Pereiara 73), Willian (Wilson 80) - Jimenez

Gunners: (4-3-3) Raya - White (Jesus 67), Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior (Tomiyasu h/t)- Odegaard, Rice, Havertz (Nelson 77) - Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli (Trossard 67)

Attendance: 24,444

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Gunners title hopes dealt another big blow in dismal loss
Gunners stay fourth after a second consecutive loss continues a damaging run

Arsenal's Premier League title hopes were dealt another huge blow as they fell to a second successive defeat at the hands of Fulham to close out 2023.

The Gunners took a fifth-minute lead in another London derby at Craven Cottage on New Year's Eve through Bukayo Saka as they looked to bounce back from Thursday's surprise home loss to West Ham and secure the win that would see them enter 2024 back on top of the Premier League table, with victories for Aston Villa and Manchester City on Saturday having seen them slip down to fourth place in a congested title race before kick-off.

But with leaders Liverpool not in action until hosting Newcastle on Monday night, flat Arsenal could not take advantage or sustain any sort of momentum in arguably their worst performance of the campaign so far as Raul Jimenez deservedly fired Fulham level before the 30-minute mark and Bobby De Cordova-Reid then blasted in the winner just shy of the hour after the visitors could not clear their lines from a corner.

A second consecutive loss means that Arsenal have now won just one of their last five league games to finish the calendar year, with a heavyweight FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool next weekend followed by their winter break.

Mikel Arteta's side do not play in the league again now until hosting Crystal Palace in another all-capital clash at the Emirates Stadium on January 20, and they could be out of the top four altogether by then with north London rivals Tottenham now just a point behind in fifth after beating in-form Bournemouth 3-1 on Sunday.

For Fulham, who also hit the crossbar through Andreas Pereira's late free-kick and looked by far the more likely team to score again as time ticked away in the torrential rain and gusty winds, it was a welcome return to form after a dire sequence of three consecutive league losses without scoring, with the returns of Jimenez and former Arsenal winger Willian from suspension and injury respectively providing a crucial attacking boost.

They had not previously beaten Arsenal in any competition since 2012 and had a terrible recent record against them, but can now look forward to the New Year with increased optimism with a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool to come in January, either side of a west London derby showdown with Chelsea.

Fulham deservedly beat lacklustre Arsenal at Craven Cottage
An abysmal Arsenal missed the chance to end 2023 at the top of the Premier League table as they were consigned to a deserved 2-1 defeat against London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Seeking to bounce back from their West Ham United horror show, Mikel Arteta's men were on the path to redemption when Bukayo Saka prodded home inside the opening five minutes, but Marco Silva's side were on top for the remainder of the game and turned the derby on its head through Raul Jimenez and Bobby Decordova-Reid.

A rejigged Arsenal XI saw all of Kai Havertz, Eddie Nketiah and Jakub Kiwior earn promotion to the starting lineup, while Fulham forward Willian recovered from a hamstring issue to feature from the off against his old club.

Much had been made of Arsenal's wastefulness in the final third in recent fixtures, but Arteta's men took just five minutes to break the deadlock in the derby, as Bernd Leno palmed a Gabriel Martinelli shot into the path of Saka, who knew little about it but managed to poke the ball into the open goal.

There was not much in the way of a celebration from the England international, who maybe feared that a VAR review would see reason to disallow the strike, but Tosin Adarabioyo had played him onside and the goal rightly stood.

Fulham's response to going behind was a positive one, though, as Jimenez forced David Raya into a comfortable diving save in the 14th minute, five moments before Willian's curler flashed just wide of the top corner.

The Cottagers were looking particularly threatening down Arsenal's right, and they got the goal their efforts merited via that route in the 29th minute, as Tom Cairney flashed a brilliant ball across the box for Jimenez, who left Kiwior in his wake and finished first-time under a diving Raya.

Once again, Arsenal's attacking sequences often ended with a misplaced pass or poor delivery into the box, although Martinelli was presented with a decent chance inside the D in the 42nd minute, only to send his first-time effort centimetres wide of the far post.

An injury-time opening for Nketiah also ended with the Englishman missing the target as he aimed for the near post, although the offside flag would have spared his blushes anyway, and a high-pressing Fulham ought to have been proud of their first-half efforts.

A welcome sight for the visiting supporters at the start of the second half was the return of Takehiro Tomiyasu, who took Kiwior's place at left-back after recovering from a calf injury, and the Gunners' first chance of the second 45 arrived in unorthodox circumstances.

Referee Josh Smith accidentally blocked Alex Iwobi as he went to challenge Declan Rice, who had time and space to pick out Martinelli as a result, but the Brazilian's curler sailed harmlessly wide as Smith breathed a sigh of relief.

After their set-piece frailties were exposed against West Ham, though, Arsenal conceded from another corner in the 59th minute, when Gabriel Magalhaes's sliced clearance deflected off of Tomiyasu into the path of Decordova-Reid, who thundered the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

For all of their tepid attacking play, Arsenal should have been level in the 63rd minute as a Martinelli cross deflected to Saka in acres of space, but the winger's first-time volley was high, wide and not at all handsome.

Arteta shifted to a 3-5-2 setup in the closing stages as Arsenal tried to turn the screw, and Saka managed to weave his way into space in the 81st minute, but Joao Palhinha produced a lung-busting run to block the Englishman's attempt.

Arsenal remained without a second-half shot on target as the clock ticked down, whereas Fulham came agonisingly close to sealing the win in the 88th minute, as an Andreas Pereira free kick rattled the crossbar and bounced to safety.

Five minutes of added time was not enough for Arsenal to salvage something from a horrendous display, as the Gunners remain fourth in the rankings ahead of next weekend's FA Cup third-round showdown with Liverpool, while Fulham - who host Rotherham United in their cup opener on Friday - rise one place to 13th.

Jimenez and De Cordova-Reid deny Arsenal top spot
Fulham produce stunning comeback win as stuttering Gunners slip to fourth after second successive defeat

Arsenal's hopes of finishing 2023 top of the table were dashed as goals from Raul Jimenez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid secured a memorable 2-1 comeback win for Fulham - their first over the Gunners in 12 years.

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a perfect start with the opening goal on five minutes, but Jimenez levelled after 29 minutes and De Cordova-Reid's 59th-minute finish turned the match on its head to condemn Mikel Arteta's side to back-to-back defeats, leaving the Gunners in fourth on 40 points.

How the match unfolded
Fulham made three changes to the side beaten at AFC Bournemouth on Boxing Day. Jimenez was back after completing a three-match ban, while Willian returned from a hamstring issue to face his former club, and Timothy Castagne replaced Kenny Tete at right-back.

For Arsenal, Kai Havertz and Eddie Nketiah came in for Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus respectively. Arteta was also forced to make a defensive change, with Jakub Kiwior starting at left-back in place of Oleksandr Zinchenko, who missed out due to a calf problem.

In Arsenal's last match, a 2-0 at home defeat to West Ham United, they became the first Premier League team to have as many as 77 touches in the opposition box without scoring. It took less than five minutes - and four touches - to go 1-0 up at Craven Cottage.

Goalkeeper David Raya rolled the ball out to Gabriel Martinelli, who sped down the left flank, and when his shot was spilled by Bernd Leno, Saka was on hand to turn the ball in from six yards.

Fulham responded positively and a fizzing cross from Antonee Robinson on 14 minutes was met by Jimenez, but Raya did well to get down and save before Willian curled an effort wide.

The home side's spell of pressure paid off before the half-hour mark, Jimenez sweeping home a superb Tom Cairney delivery from the left for his fourth goal in four matches.

Arsenal could have added a second just before the break, but Martinelli poked his shot wide following a neat move involving Declan Rice, Saka and Martin Odegaard.

Arteta introduced Takehiro Tomiyasu for Kiwior at half-time, but it was Fulham who continued to attack with greater urgency, and they went 2-1 ahead through De Cordova-Reid on 59 minutes.

Willian swung over a second corner in quick succession, Arsenal couldn't clear their lines, and De Cordova-Reid hammered the loose ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Saka spurned a great chance to level just four minutes later but sliced his volley wide when unmarked at the back post.

Arteta made a double substitution, bringing on Trossard, who claimed a hat-trick of assists when Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 last season, and Jesus as he tried to ignite his misfiring side.

Trossard curled in an inviting cross from the left that neither Jesus nor centre-back Gabriel could convert, and Joao Palhinha made a superb block from Saka as Arsenal pressed for the equaliser.

It was Marco Silva's side who came closest to scoring again, however, as substitute Andreas Pereira smashed the woodwork with a free-kick.

Fulham's fourth win from their last five home matches leaves them in 13th with 24 points.

Key facts
This was the first time that Arsenal lost a Premier League match in which they scored the game's opening goal since New Year's Day 2022 against Manchester City (Saka put them 1-0 up on both occasions). It ended the Gunners' run of 48 league matches unbeaten when going 1-0 ahead (W42 D6).

Fulham won a Premier League game in which they had fallen behind at any stage for the first time since October 2022 against Leeds, ending their 26-match winless run when falling behind in the league (D4 L22).

Saka scored his 10th London derby goal for Arsenal in the Premier League; only Harry Kane (15) has ever scored more London derby goals in the competition while aged 22 or younger.

Fulham ended their 11-match winless run against Arsenal in the Premier League (D3 L8). This was their first league victory over the Gunners since January 2012 (2-1).

Fulham player ratings from 2-1 win against Arsenal – Bassey and Robinson stand out as Whites wrap up 2023 with a victory
Fulham ended a three-match losing run with an impressive 2-1 win against Arsenal at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Despite falling behind to an early Bukayo Saka goal, the Whites hit back with strikes from Raul Jimenez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid to end 2023 in style.

Here are Dan Evans' player ratings from Craven Cottage.

Bernd Leno – 6

Will feel he could have done better with the early Gabriel Martinelli effort that he palmed into the path of Saka to open the scoring. Was otherwise untroubled by an Arsenal side that were far from their best.

Timothy Castagne – 7

Was a real attacking force in the first half, exploiting the space left by De Cordova-Reid as he tucked in from the right wing. Found it tough against the lively Martinelli at times, but overall, a strong performance as he competes with Kenny Tete for the right back spot.

Tosin Adarabioyo – 7

Looks an ideal partner for Calvin Bassey and was solid again in this one. Not given too much trouble by either Eddie Nketiah or substitute Gabriel Jesus and managed to stroll through the game.

Calvin Bassey – 8

Another great performance from the summer arrival. His crunching challenge on Saka set Fulham away for the equalising goal and he enjoyed a number of strong carries from defence in what remained of the game. Also made two tackles as well as three interceptions and won five of his seven duels.

Antonee Robinson – 8

Games like this show why teams as illustrious as Liverpool have been credited with an interest in the USA international recently. He was a constant threat down the left flank with his driving runs, almost setting Jimenez up for a goal early on. His six tackles were the most of any player on the pitch and he handled Saka well for much of the afternoon.

Alex Iwobi – 7

Back in a central role for the first time since early November to take on his former club, and Iwobi impressed once again. Helped link play well, completing two key passes, and won the ball back from Martinelli expertly to start the move that led to the corner from which De Cordova-Reid scored.

Joao Palhinha – 7

Perhaps surprising that Fulham were able to pull off such a seismic win without Palhinha being the most influential player on the pitch, but that shows how much of a team performance this was. Still contributed two tackles and two interceptions whilst also winning the header from the corner that led to De Cordova-Reid's winner.

Tom Cairney – 7

Silva ignored calls to replace his captain with more of a defensive presence following the recent losing run, and the Fulham boss was duly rewarded. Cairney crossed for the Jimenez equaliser and played an important role in Fulham's first-half attacks down the left. Completed 46 of his 49 passes and almost bagged himself a second half goal with a curling effort that was saved by David Raya.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid – 7

Was something of a forgotten man during Fulham' goal bonanza immediately after the international break but produced the game's defining moment in what was only his second start since the beginning of December. Reacted brilliantly to smash into the net after Arsenal made a mess of clearing.

Raul Jimenez – 7

Back after suspension to continue his scoring streak. Could have done more than find the gloves of Raya with an early chance but made no mistake when Cairney picked him out with a deep cross to the back post. Was a nuisance upfront and worked tirelessly as Fulham held on to their second-half lead.

Willian – 7

Not the winger's most impactful performance after returning to the team following four matches out with injury, yet he was still very much involved in a lot of Fulham's best moments. Curled wide with a decent effort in the first half before setting Cairney away down the left to set up Jimenez's equaliser. Replaced by Issa Diop late on as Fulham held on for victory.

Subs:

Andreas Pereira – 6

Curled a free-kick against the crossbar that would have wrapped up the win and helped bring energy to midfield when it was needed.

Issa Diop – NA

Harry Wilson – NA

Harrison Reed – NA

Boss Silva savours 'top performance' by Fulham
Marco Silva savoured the"top performance" Fulham produced to come from behind and beat Arsenal.

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid cancelled out Bukayo Saka's early goal to secure a memorable victory for the Whites.

Boss Silva said: "We were the best side on the pitch. It's really pleasing to come off a few bad results with the Burnley match and the away game to Bournemouth – we played under our standards for what they should be.

"The way we reacted in the first half was at a very good level and overall, we were the best side on the pitch and deserved the three points.

"Every game has their own story so I'm not sure where this performance ranks in the season, but it was a top performance against a top side.

"It was important to get this result over the line. We have been deserving this type of result against the top sides, we have played well in these games."

The result means Fulham are only four points off Chelsea in 10th place and put a bow on 2023 for Fulham, a year that Silva considers a great success.

He said: "It's a great way to end the year. 2023 has been a great year for Fulham Football Club. The players deserve it for the hard work they have put in and the fans deserve it for their support for us."

De Cordova-Reid dents Arsenal's title challenge
This was the perfect way for Fulham to respond to three defeats in a row. Marco Silva's first victory against one of the Premier League's top six was fully deserved – and his battling charges had to do it the hard way, having conceded an early goal to Bukaya Saka. Fulham fought to gain a foothold in a blood and thunder London derby, with Raul Jimenez's predatory finish at the far post bringing them level at half time, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid sweeping in the winner after Arsenal had failed to clear a corner. That the victory arrived with Fulham not compromising on their attacking principles against one of the favourites to lift the title would have made it all the sweeter for Silva.

Fulham's first win over the Gunners in eleven years was founded on the sort of work ethic that De Cordova-Reid embodies. The Jamaican international would admit that he was fortunate to remain in the starting eleven after a below par performance at Bournemouth on Boxing Day – but his tenacity typified how the Whites went about slaying Mikel Arteta's side. Fulham fought for every ball and created a host of good chances too – with the former Cardiff City forward drilling home after Arsenal had struggled to clear Willian's set-piece.

Silva was insistent that his side wouldn't trade in their adventurous approach for a place at the Premier League table after he steered the Cottagers to the top flight in his first season in charge at Craven Cottage. The hosts paid for their gung-ho attitude when Timothy Castagne was caught upfield having failed to put in a dangerous cross from one of Fulham's first attacks. Gabriel Martinelli twisted De Cordova-Reid inside out and, although Bernd Leno was equal to his eventual shot, Saka needed no second invitation to prod home the rebound from close range.

It was almost as if Arsenal felt it would be too easy after that. They were passive in possession and in their attitude, with the white shirts sweeping forward in search of equaliser. Jimenez should have provided one when he sidefooted straight at David Raya after the ex-Arsenal winger Willian and Antonee Robinson had linked up along the left flank. Jimenez, who enjoyed great joy when he dropped deeper than the Arsenal centre halves, then found another former Arsenal midfielder in Alex Iwobi and Willian curled a trademark effort agonisingly wide having been teed up by the Nigerian internatioanal.

Jimenez was furious with his himself for thrashing Willian's corner wildly over the bar as the home side piled on the pressure, but he made amends from much closer range just before the half hour. Calvin Bassey, imperious on his 24th birthday, timed a challenge on Saka superbly and Joao Palhinha played Tom Cairney clear on the left flank. The Fulham skipper sent in a sublime low ball from the left and Jimenez met it magnificently on the slide at the back post to score his fourth goal in as many appearances.

You expected Arsenal, who had seen speculative shots from the anonymous Eddie Nketiah, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice fly well off target, to regather themselves for the second period but Fulham continued to ask most of the questions. Palhinha protected the home back four in a peerless performance, whilst Cairney quietly dictated the play, drifting effortlessly between the lines as the Whites made plenty of their share of the ball. Silva's side had looked threatening from a succession of corners but when Palhinha met Willian's flag kick and the ball bounced around off first Rice, then Gabriel and finally half-time substitute Takehiro Tomiyasu, De Cordova-Reid drilled home from seven yards out.

Saka skied an immediate opportunity to bring Arsenal level when Bassey and Antonee Robinson seemed to go for the same ball, but even though Arteta sent on Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard in the search for an equaliser, Fulham had the clearer chances despite ceding possession and territory for the final half an hour. Raya somehow clawed a Cairnery curler away from the top corner and the former Brentford goalkeeper was helpless when substitute Andreas Pereira's free-kick crashed against the crossbar.

Fulham, so meek in their defeats by Burnley and Bournemouth over the festive period, fought until the last knockings – encapsulated by an incredible Palhinha block when Saka seemed certain to level matters late on – and this display should give them great confidence going into their League Cup semi-final with Liverpool next month. It also poses serious questions about Arsenal's stomach for the fight with Manchester City certain to scrap for their Premier League title in the months ahead.

Silva salutes Fulham's 'character'
Marco Silva praised Fulham's 'character' after his side came from behind to beat Arsenal at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead in the fifth minute but Fulham equalised through Raul Jimenez before half-time with Bobby De Cordova-Reid sweeping home the winner from a corner just before the hour mark.

The Fulham head coach felt his side fully deserved the three points.

"Overall, I think we were the best side on the pitch. After conceding the early goal against a team like Arsenal, it shows it's a team that knows really what we wanted from the match, showing the character and the personality to turn it for us. The way after that we reacted, the way we played first half was a very, very good level. We mixed our game well, there were moments to start from the back when we beat their pressure, as we know that Arsenal is really strong when they press really high.

And the way we did it, mixing some moments with going more direct with Raúl, other moments with quality from the back, and when our equalising goal came it was more than fair because they were great moments from ourselves, a very good goal from ourselves, and we deserved it clearly. Arsenal had some moments around our box as well, one or two good chances, we had one or two good ones as well.

Second half, our block was a little bit more low, Arsenal obligated us in the first minutes to go to bit more low, but we controlled really well. I don't remember one chance for Arsenal second half, the way we controlled so well. We score from a set-piece, we had more chances, we hit the crossbar, and overall I agree that we were the best team on the pitch and deserved the three points. And we deserve the praise because the way they reacted from the early goal and the way they did it was really, really good."

Silva felt this result had been becoming despite disappointing performances over the festive period against Burnley and Bournemouth.

"It's really important and, to be honest, in 2023, I think we have been deserving this type of result against top sides, because we have been really so, so close in some moments to getting one – for many reasons, sometimes our fault, sometimes their quality as well, because the details play always a big part in it.

Of course, it's the best way to finish the year. 2023 has been a great year for Fulham Football Club – the way we did it last season, the way we have been achieving important stages of the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. And for us it was really important to finish on a high.

We spoke before the match that clearly it was our ambition to finish on a high. The players deserve it for all the work they have been doing, our fans deserve it as well, but overall the club deserves to finish on a high. We did it It in the best way really – to play against a top side, a title contender. And to do it at the Cottage is the perfect afternoon for us."

"Immense" Premier League star willing to agree move to Liverpool - Salah struggled against him
Liverpool are looking at reinforcing their options at left-back and Fulham defender Antonee Robinson has emerged as a realistic and quality option.

The Reds have been unfortunate with injuries at the back yet again with Joel Matip ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL rupture.

At left-back, Jurgen Klopp has been robbed of both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. Both suffered similar injuries with Robbo dislocating his shoulder while Tsimi broke his collarbone.

Such bad luck cannot be accounted for but what Liverpool can do is use the transfer market to ensure such injuries don't interrupt the incredible run of form the Reds are in.

What's the transfer latest on Antonee Robinson to Liverpool?
Not only are Liverpool interested in signing Robinson but the player is keen on a move to Anfield.

According to 90Min, Liverpool have made contact with the Cottagers over a move to sign the the 26-year-old.

A move is being considered in January and Robinson is understandably open to swapping Craven Cottage for Anfield in what would represent a real switch of fortune.

No disrespect to Fulham but any professional would be fully ready to swap battling for mid-table for a side sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

Robinson has passed the Liverpool test already
When Liverpool faced Fulham, Mohamed Salah had a rare quiet game and it was down to Robinson's defensive nous.

Salah did grab an assist for Wataru Endo's winner in the 4-3 thriller against `Fulham but Robinson's stellar performance caught the eye.

According to data from Sofascore, his performance was worth of a 7.7 rating.

I would have to agree as he limited Salah to a rare 7/10. His 13 interceptions prevented the Liverpool attacker from being as free-flowing as he would normally be.

He also managed four clearances and four tackles. He was also only dribbled past once. When faced up against the iconic Mo Salah, that's quite exceptional.

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Player ratings
Bernd Leno: The German did brilliantly to claw away an early effort from Gabriel Martinelli and was unfortunate to push the ball straight into the path of the waiting Bukayo Saka, who had the simplest of tasks to give Arsenal the lead from close range. What was surprising was that the Gunners barely tested their former goalkeeper more. Leno's delight at being the winner side was clear as he took the acclaim from the Hammersmith End following the final whistle. 7

Timmy Castagne: The Belgian was caught up field for Arsenal's goal having made a strong run into the final third but failed to produce a telling delivery. That was the story of the right back's first half an hour as he struggled to make the most of purposeful bursts down the wing but he kept plugging away and, most importantly, ensured that the dangerous Martinelli didn't have that kind of space and time to hurt Fulham again. A strong showing despite a sticky start. 7

Antonee Robinson: The American did magnificently to blunt Saka's influence after the England winger scored in the fifth minute. By the latter stages of the contest, the Arsenal man was venturing way off his flank if only to try and find some space to play in. Of course, it wasn't just Robinson's defensive discipline that marked out this performance. He flew forward as ever from left back and produced a brilliant bit of vision to create some space for Raul Jimenez in the penalty area – when the Mexican really should have scored. 8

Tosin Adarabioyo: Outstanding once again at the heart of the Fulham defence. Brought the ball out from the back with his usual composure and distributed it well, even under pressure. Tosin was a big part of how the Whites maintained their advantage after going in front in the second half, making a number of vital clearances as Arsenal pushed for a late leveller. He also dealt very well with Gabriel Jesus after the forward was sent on by Arteta. 8

Calvin Bassey: A colossal display combining pace, power and desire from Bassey. He snapped into tackles from the outset – just like the one that saw Saka beaten to the ball and began the move for Fulham's crucial equaliser – and gave neither Eddie Nketiah or Jesus any room in which to operate. His passing was top notch, too, and you can see why Marco Silva placed so much trust in him earlier this season. Superb. 9

Joao Palhinha: This was more like the Palhinha we know and love. He did let Martinelli get onto his stronger right side when trying to cover for the out-of-position Castagne for the early goal, but a combination of precise passing and powerful tackling helped the Portuguese international quickly put that behind him. His screening of the back four and zealous work ethic meant that Arsenal's extra man in the centre of midfield counted for little – and you had to love his first pumping reaction to a wonderful late block of Saka's shot. 8

Tom Cairney: Fulham's playmaker was back on form after too subdued displays against Burnley and Bournemouth over the festive period. Plenty might have given him a rest, but Silva stuck to his guns and Cairney's class on the ball was crucial in ensuring the Whites had a foothold in the game. He created the equaliser with a strong run down the left flank followed by a brilliant low ball in that found Jimenez at the far post – and was still pulling the strings right up until his late substitution. 8

Bobby De Cordova-Reid: It was somewhat surprising that our workaholic winger kept his place in the starting line-up having been well short of his best at Bournemouth, but this was exactly what you put Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the team for. He did a diligent job in not leaving Martinelli one-on-one against Castagne after the early setback, but he looked very lively in the final third – regularly offering an attacking outlet. Took his goal beautifully when the ball bounced his way – and thoroughly deserves all the plaudits. 8

Willian: It is no exaggeration to say that Fulham look like an entirely different team with the brilliant Brazilian back in the line up. He was prominent in the first half, with a vicious curler dropping just wide of the far post, and played his part in the equaliser by playing a deft ball down the line to release Cairney. Arteta hooked Ben White at half time but that didn't have the desired effect as the former Arsenal winger kept on popping up in dangerous positions. What a signing he has been. 8

Alex Iwobi: Another ex-Arsenal man had more freedom to operate in this side having been shifted into the number ten position in place of the benched Andreas Pereira. Tried to be a bit too over elaborate early on, but soon settled into the contest – dropping into pockets of space in front of a very porous Arsenal back line. Led the press effectively, prevented the Gunners' full backs from making progress into our half and was pivotal in putting together some dangerous breaks. 7

Raul Jimenez: It is so great to have the Mexican back from suspension after his daft kung-fu kick at Newcastle. He should have scored when Willian and Robinson combined smartly along the left but made amends with a fine first-time touch finish at the far post from Cairney's cracking cross. He pressed far more frenetically than Rodrigo Muniz managed in the last three games and grabbled for every loose ball as well as shielding it superbly from Gabriel and Saliba, who had a torrid afternoon as a result. 8

Substitutes:

Andreas Pereira: Breathed new life into Fulham's attack as a substitute – carrying the ball deep into Arsenal territory on a number of occasions. Ridiculously unlucky not to score with a late free-kick that came back off the crossbar with David Raya beaten. 7

Harry Wilson: Did brilliantly out wide in the final ten minutes even if his main job was to deny Arsenal the means to equalise – which would have gone against all of his natural instincts. 7

Issa Diop: Delivered a crucial contribution off the bench as Silva switched to three centre backs to soak up some of Arsenal's late pressure. Made a couple of crucial headers as the Whites held on for a precious three points. 7

Harrison Reed: Sent on in stoppage time for Cairney to add a bit of bite to the Fulham midfield – and came in handy as Josh Smith seemed to play on forever. 6

West Ham United ready to sell Said Benrahma with Serhou Guirassy transfer lined up
West Ham are preparing to sell Said Benrahma in the January transfer window, with both Fulham and Lyon interested, and remain in the running for Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper shared in their print edition [1 January, the Verdict pg 10] that David Moyes is willing to cut ties with Benrahma if the club can find a replacement, although Mohammed Kudus' involvement in the African Cup of Nations could delay a move.

A move for Guirassy, meanwhile, would revolve around his active release clause of £15million, with the Hammers interested after he has scored 17 goals in 14 Bundesliga games this season.

A domino effect would make sense
If Benrahma is to leave the London Stadium in January as seems the most likely outcome, any money brought in from his sale could be put straight towards the £15million release clause to sign Guirassy from Stuttgart.

The Algerian winger has lost his starting place under Moyes, with Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta the first-choice trio in the attacking positions, and has been frustrated by a lack of game time and below-par performances so far this season.

Finding a goalscoring striker has been a difficult task for the Hammers in recent transfer windows, and with Guirassy proving he can score plenty in the Bundesliga, his relatively low-cost release clause could be enough to tempt the Premier League side into making a move.

Since Gianluca Scamacca left in the summer, West Ham have been keen to bring in a new forward, and with the stuttering form of both Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, a move for a 17-goal forward makes too much sense to ignore.

Fulham youngsters to watch out for in 2024 including 'really humble' teenager
After a positive 2023 under Marco Silva, Fulham have plenty to look forward to in 2024 including the potential emergence of several exciting youngsters.

Silva has struggled to give Fulham's young players consistent minutes since arriving at the club but a couple of debuts have been handed out this season.

With a previous youngster linked with a move back to Craven Cottage, the club might be better off looking at the prestigious academy.

They're currently competing at the top of Premier League 2 against some of the biggest clubs in the country.

Sooner or later they're going to need to be thrown into the first team to see whether they're ready for senior football.

Jay Stansfield – 21 – Forward
The most obvious answer for which youngster could break into the Fulham first team in 2024 is Jay Stansfield.

A decent loan spell at Exeter City last season saw him earn a move to Birmingham City in the Championship.

His time at the club started well, quickly breaking into the starting line-up and scoring three goals in four league games.

Unfortunately, the strange sacking of John Eustace and the arrival of Wayne Rooney has coincided with a real downturn in form for the Blues.

Fulham may have to consider recalling Stansfield in January and sending him to a team that will aid his development.

Stansfield should be part of the senior squad in the summer and seeing as he can play as either a centre-forward or on the wings, he could be a useful asset to Silva.

Introducing him slowly to the side next year should be the next step in his development.

Luc de Fougerolles – 18 – Defender
Very few Fulham fans would have heard of Luc de Fougerolles before this year's pre-season.

However, with the club short of defenders heading to the Premier League Summer Series, the Canadian youngster was handed his opportunity.

Fulham fans were suitably impressed and after making his senior debut in the EFL Cup, 2024 could end up being the 'really humble' youngster's breakout year.

De Fougerolles has already been called up to the Canadian senior team but is yet to make his debut.

A loan move in January might be beneficial and a player who could play across the back line would be a handy player to have in the squad for Silva heading into next season.

Jonathan Esenga – 16 – Defender
The youngest player on the list, there is a huge amount of hype around Jonathan Esenga in the academy right now.

The left-back has consistently played at Under-21 level this season and already has a couple of goals and assists to his name.

It would be too easy to make comparisons to Ryan Sessegnon given the position he plays, but his tendency to bomb down the wing and get into dangerous areas makes him an enticing prospect.

Esenga is unlikely to be one of the Fulham youngsters who breaks into the first team straight away in 2024.

But it would not be a stretch to imagine him becoming more involved with the senior squad and potentially even making his debut.

Other players to look out for next year
There are also a few other players to keep an eye on that could have an impact on the first team going forward.

Fulham simply have to loan out Luke Harris in January, the teenager must start playing regular senior minutes as he's unlikely to be benefitting from Under-21 appearances for much longer.

Matt Dibley-Dias and Devan Tanton also have first-team appearances to their name and although they don't feature on the bench as regularly as Harris, should be lining up temporary moves elsewhere.

Finally, the youngster who could come straight into the Fulham first-team squad after his current loan spell in 2024 is Martial Godo.

A winger has starred for Wigan Athletic and earned a call-up to the England Under-20 squad.

He's a technically excellent player and his debut against Crawley in a humiliating defeat has to be forgotten when you consider the levels he's reached since that day.
