Super subs are story of our season, says Robinson
Antonee Robinson praised Fulham's substitutes for securing their first top flight double over Newcastle United in sixteen years.

Andreas Pereira and Rodrigo Muniz combined to conjure up the winner for the Whites eight minutes from time at St. James' Park – making it the eleventh time that one of Marco Silva's substitutes has scored a Premier League goal this season. American international Robinson told Match of the Day:

"The lads coming on and getting scoring has been the story of our season. It's not just the starting eleven, it's the whole squad fighting for places. The fact that everyone keeps the belief and there is so much contribution from the bench just shows we are together as a unit and working for each other."

Full back Robinson also offered an insight into the discussion in the Fulham changing room at half time, whilst subtly suggesting that his team-mates weren't as bad as Martin Fisher made out on Match of the Day:

"We were up against it in the first half, they were obviously full of confidence, but we we were still putting things together and it wasn't really falling for us. We came in at half time and said: 'Don't concede and we are going to get chances'. Tactically, it was all the same. We just said: 'If we don't concede, we can go on and win the game'. The gaffer didn't have a big go at us, he just said: 'Go out, win your battles and you can win the game. We said that we needed to be more physical and not lose tackles. They started to get pinned back a little bit and, after we got the goal, we just carried on with our game plan."

Fulham join Hume hunt
Fulham have added Sunderland full back Trai Hume to their shortlist of potential additions at right back, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

Marco Silva wants to sign a right back during the close of the January transfer window to provide competition for Timothy Castagne with Dutch international Kenny Tete still sidelined through a knee injury. The Whites are actually considering loan deals for two Roma right backs in the form of Emerson Royal and Zeki Celik, who could both leave the San Siro in the next 48 hours following Kyle Walker's move to the Giallorossi.

The Northern Ireland international has already been watched by Fulham scouts during his superb season for Sunderland, but the Black Cats are understood to value the 22 year-old at around £20m – which would rule out a permanent deal in this window.

Positives and Negatives: Newcastle 1 – 2 Fulham

In the perfect definition of a game of two halves, Fulham turned around a 1 – 0 deficit against the Toon to come back and win a tight match in emphatic fashion. After failing to register a single shot on target, Fulham found their feet and played through the Newcastle back line to perfection to make it a rare double for us against powerful opposition, proving we can compete with the very best in the Premier League and keep those European dreams alive. Let's dive into the truly positive, and lesser negative sides of how things played out at St James' Park.

Positives

A trademark Raúl special

Once again, I'm left in awe of Raúl Jiménez looking at another trademark goal that offers so much more than just a tidy, albeit deflected, finish at the end. Newcastle in Fulham's final third, find their attacking pass intercepted by Raúl at the back, who drives the ball forward, passes play onto to his teammates, who progress a delightful switching of play across the pitch, which grants Antonee Robinson his 10th assist of the season, and our Mexican frontman finds himself at the front of the attack again to tuck the ball away at the end of the move that he started.

I love the synergy of the counter attack from defence to attack. He is at the heart of Fulham's play and refuses to stand upfront and expect everything to be played to him. I think there are still some Fulham fans out there that don't quite appreciate what quality Raúl brings and he deserves a huge amount of recognition for passages of play like this. A much improved performance from last season's red card, no arse-to-face showdown against Longstaff this time.

A set-piece masterclass

How wonderful to see two substitutes combining astutely to put the ball in the back of Dubravka's net. We've been crying out for more success from set pieces all season, and it feels like they're starting to tip in our favour again. This time Andreas Pereira sends in a perfectly delivered cross to the near-post with some venom behind it, creating that satisfying dilemma for the defence that they need to get a block in on the ball regardless of the other attackers at play, then all it takes is a small touch to throw off the keeper, who committed to grasping the ball at the post, only to find Rodrigo Muniz's deft touch tip it over him gracefully. A really well-worked goal that took everyone by surprise.

Andreas has had to do a lot to win the fans back over since the questionable interview ahead of the transfer window, but it feels like he's working harder than ever before and today was a lovely example of that paying off on the pitch, and Muniz celebrates his fourth off the bench, reiterating his bright Fulham future. Great squad depth.

No joy for Isak

With 22 goal contributions across the current season, and 13 goals in his last 10 outings ahead of the match, trying to stop the most in-form striker in the Premier League is a mean feat, Alexander Isak is proving to be (almost) unstoppable. With an abundance of talented attacking players and pace, today's game could have been a very different story, but all of Fulham's defence rose to the challenge. Anthony Gordon was having a lot of success down the left wing, beating Timothy Castagne on a couple of occasions to carve us open, but as the game went on he rose to the challenge and we managed to keep their hugely talented winger on ice.

While Joachim Andersen looked a little off the pace, his defensive numbers were strong with plenty of successful clearances, interceptions and defensive actions, and his trademark diagonal long ball today really gave us another dimension of play. Robinson was class as always tearing up the pitch with his pace, and Calvin Bassey was solid as always, strong on the ball to see us out of trouble. We got a little lucky with the woodwork still shaking from Sandro Tonali's long-range effort and Isak's wonderfully curled strike, but today the boys deserve huge credit for protecting Bernd Leno's goal.

Negatives

Woe-ful Iwobi Deliveries

With only two of Alex Iwobi's nine crosses finding a man at the end, it wasn't just the numbers that didn't look good, but the general attempts to progress attacks, albeit mainly in the first half, were pretty woeful today. On more than one occasion, Iwobi's long balls forward offered no threat and found themselves lofting into dead areas and off the pitch for a goal kick. Coupled with no successful dribbles, no tackles or ground duels won, it's one for the big man to forget. He knows this better than anyone else though, you could see the genuine frustration he was channeling at himself during the match and he does more than enough great stuff to have a bad day now and then. Improved in the second half with the rest of the team thankfully and in the end it didn't impact the three points.

First half: same old story

One of the recurring themes of this season is that Fulham display such dominance of the ball, an admirable quality that nullifies our oppositions and stops them playing against us. Generally, because of this we create more chances than our counterparts too, but so often the stats show that despite our many attempts towards goal, they often end up off target or not being dangerous enough opportunities, or there's just a general lack of clinicalness that we often see in opposition's counter attacks. It's certainly not Parkerball, but there are echoes of it.

Our painful 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last week was a perfect example of this, while we can all say we were extremely hard done by with the singular deflected shot on target from outside the box sinking us, ultimately we lost because we were wasteful in front of goal. The first half today was exactly like that, with no attempts on target. But I'd much rather a poor start to a game than a poor ending, and sometimes you have to feel out the game and grow into it which is exactly what we managed to do today to get the win.

Inconsistent Cavanagh

Joelinton was able to get away with repeated fouls unpunished for a large part of the game, and it seemed for Andersen and Robinson there was absolutely no hesitation to brandish those yellow cards. Then strangely the decisions seem to fall in our favour in the second half much to the Newcastle fans despair. For example, there was absolutely no need for Tonali to get a booking against Adama Traore when he actually won the ball. When you look at those smaller decisions across the whole match it just felt as if he didn't really grasp the pace of the game or the appropriate punishments. Thankfully in the end it worked in our favour, and although there were some good moments from the ref, overall the brandishing of the cards, or lack of, seemed a bit rash and unnecessary at times.

Fulham can celebrate a Premier League win at St. James' Park for the first time in 16 years, back then the Toon were under Alan Shearer after countless manager changes, then they were actually relegated. Eddie Howe's record of eight wins in nine matches against Fulham has been wrecked this season as we stand victorious, taking all six points from an extremely well-organised team challenging for Europe again. It really is a wild, wacky and wonderful Premier League season we're having – and the ending could be more surprising then we think.

Fulham circling round Sunderland AFC player as £20m price-tag emerges
Sunderland have placed a £20m price-tag on right-back Trai Hume ahead of the final two days of the January transfer window, with Premier League side Fulham interested.

The Belfast Telegraph have reported that the Cottagers are targeting the 22-year-old and are looking to work out a deal before Monday's 11pm deadline, but the Black Cats are incredibly keen to keep hold of the young star.

Regis Le Bris' side are not in action until tomorrow evening when they make the short journey to the Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough in the Tees-Wear derby, knowing that they must win to keep in contact with Sheffield United in second place.

The Blades are now six points ahead of Sunderland after their 1-0 victory over Derby County on Saturday afternoon, while Burnley were held to yet another 0-0 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Sunderland place £20m price-tag on Trai Hume as Fulham interest becomes clear
The Black Cats are desperately trying to keep hold of their core squad members, and that includes Hume, as the right-back key to Le Bris' plans for not just this season, but the future as well.

Sunderland want the Northern Ireland international to follow them to the Premier League, and therefore a huge bid of £20m is needed to take him out of the Wearsiders' hands in this transfer window, as per the Belfast Telegraph.

If Fulham were to agree a deal with the Championship high-fliers, then Hume's former side, Linfield, would be entitled to 15 per cent of the fee.

Hume has made 28 appearances for the Black Cats this season, and he has been extremely impressive in his last few appearances. He scored and picked up an assist in Sunderland's 2-2 draw at home to Plymouth Argyle last weekend, and has shown that he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League.

It is vital that Sunderland keep hold of their key stars before the window shuts
It's been an incredible season for the Wearsiders, and few predicted that they would be involved in the fight for automatic promotion before a ball was kicked.

However, Le Bris' young side have proven to be the surprise package in the Championship, and there is a strong chance that they will return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 by the time May comes around.

Hume is crucial to those plans, and Sunderland are extremely keen not to let go of the right-back unless they receive a considerable fee.

So far in this transfer window, the Black Cats have managed to keep hold of their key players, and have added to their squad with Enzo Le Fee joining from Roma on a loan-to-buy deal.

Fulham offer on the table – Last minute acceptance certainly looks possible
Fulham and AS Roma are in something of a standoff regarding Zeki Çelik and a transfer before the end of the window.

The transfer deadline of Monday night is now fast approaching, and Fulham are working to take the Turkey international from the Serie A side.

So far, the Premier League club have put a loan offer on the table. That loan would include an option to buy for Fulham, and this is where the sticking point currently is.

Roma want that option to be an obligation instead and if Fulham agree to that condition then a transfer can go through.

The 27-year-old has made 28 appearances so far this season but has dropped in prominence in recent weeks. He can play right back, wing back and right midfield, even helping out as a centre back when required.

Çelik's contract lasts until June 2026, and that's likely one of the reasons Roma want an obligation clause. The player's value will drop come the summer and they'd prefer to protect themselves.

Fulham can likely get this one over the line with an obligation linked to appearances.

Man Of The Match Result: Newcastle
Raúl Jiménez's goalscoring display in the 2-1 win against Newcastle has earned him Man of the Match, as voted for by the Fulham fans.

It was his hard work that started the move for our equaliser, winning the ball back before sprinting the length on the pitch to finish off Antonee Robinson's ball in.

The Mexico international's performance was praised by his manager, with Marco Silva saying: "Raúl was great during the minutes he played. There was a big fight from him."

Raúl won with 28.13 per cent of the vote, followed closely by Calvin Bassey (17.1%) and Antonee Robinson (10.86%).

Fulham in hot pursuit of Jack Harrison as Leeds-Everton update emerges
Fulham have expressed an interest in signing Jack Harrison from Leeds United despite the winger currently being on loan at Everton, according to the Daily Mail.

The news outlet reported on 2 February that Fulham are keeping an eye on Harrison ahead of the deadline on 3 February despite claims that the forward will remain at Goodison Park for the remainder of the season [The Mirror].

Harrison was quietly mooted for a return to Elland Road but nothing materialised but a switch to Fulham could be a possibility ahead of Monday night's deadline.

Jack Harrison days are over at Leeds United
Given how poorly he has fared while out on loan at Everton, there seems to be little future to be had at Elland Road for Harrison and a move to Fulham may be just what he needs to kickstart his career.

Realistically, any rumours of him returning to Leeds were squashed and when taking into account the quality in the White squad, it's hard to see where he would even fit in now.

A fresh start is what he needs and Fulham may be able to provide him with that. With regular game time and a footballing home, Harrison may be able to get back to the form that earned him such a high reputation in the first place.

That home is almost definitely not with Leeds and based on his performances on Merseyside, it seems highly unlikely that it is with Everton either.

Harrison, despite featuring 19 times in the Premier League for the Toffees, is yet to register a single-goal contribution with his future certainly now up in the air.

Player Ratings: Newcastle United 1-2 Fulham

After weeks of reoccurring problems and a lack of true identity, Fulham bounced back handsomely in the second half on Tyneside to record a phenomenal comeback victory over Champions League-chasing Newcastle United. After another poor first half, Marco Silva's inspired Whites took the second half to the Geordies and got the three points they thoroughly deserved.

Bernd Leno

Part of the reason that Fulham had any sort of foundation to build on and make a comeback in the second 45 was due to the solidity of Bernd Leno on a couple of occasions. Fabian Schar made an ambitious run into the Fulham box on the half hour mark but was denied from close range by the German. Following that, Livramento went clear down the right-hand side, but his angled effort across Leno's body was also saved well. Newcastle created very little after that to give Leno an easier time of it, thankfully, and he certainly can't be apportioned any blame for the Jacob Murphy opener. 7/10.

Timothy Castagne

Unfortunately, another struggle for Castagne today in large spells. It was he who was majorly at fault for Newcastle's goal, allowing Anthony Gordon to turn and sprint away from him with minimal effort, leaving the whole defence frantically re-positioning themselves to try and cover the error. He was lucky a 75th minute effort from Isak didn't sneak under the crossbar, too, failing to close the Swede down with any vigour. At times, in his defence, he defended the box well as Newcastle pushed for a second, but the consistency on show last season just is not there right now. 5/10.

Joachim Andersen

Another week where I wonder what Diop must be thinking sat on the bench. This wasn't Joa's poorest showing but he simply isn't finding the levels he's been at for Fulham or Crystal Palace in the past half a decade in the Premier League. When Castagne let Gordon through for the Newcastle goal, it looked clear too that Andersen has lost a yard of pace, as he got nowhere close to getting back to challenge for the ball. Generally defended his box relatively okay and his passing wasn't as tragic as last weekend but we miss him at his top level, ultimately. 5.5/10

Calvin Bassey

Comfortably our best defender on the pitch, by a fair distance in this one. Made the most tackles of anyone in our backline, including a couple of huge one-on-one challenges near the halfway line that, had Newcastle got past him, would have presented them with a dangerous overload on the counter attack. While Robinson has taken the armband recently, it feels as if Bassey is the leading figure in this Fulham back four at the moment. 7/10.

Antonee Robinson

Finding it hard to criticize Jedi too much for the goal we conceded. Sure, it came from his side and the man he'd be usually be marking, but the whole defence was moving across to cover Castagne's error and ultimately I think he can be rightly upset there was no left winger to cover him defensively with the two players queueing up to score at the back post. At the other end, it was the captain's beautifully cushioned cross that set up the equalising goal, his 10th assist of the season, matching Steed Malbranque's Fulham record for assists in a Premier League season. 6.5/10.

Sander Berge

Offered us complete control at the base of midfield once again. Even in the first half where Fulham seemed bereft of attacking ideas, the ball would frequently find its way to Berge who recycled possession well to the wide areas each time. Newcastle possess huge quality on the ball in the middle, especially with Guimaraes and Tonali, but Berge stood up to that test and won the ball off both on multiple occasions. A completed pass percentage of above 93% is also mightily impressive considering how often his teammates relied on his strength on the ball. 7/10.

Sasa Lukic

For sure, I think Lukic continues to earn praise this season. He's probably covering more ground than any Fulham player most weeks, he's key in transition in terms of his ball-winning abilities and he possesses immense quality on the ball, including an astronomical pass completion rate of nearly 97% in this one. However, with Berge alongside him, I just wonder if, as well as sweeping up at the back at the perfect times, he could find his way onto the edge of the opposition box more often and improve his attacking input now with a bit more freedom to roam in that position. 6.5/10.

Emile Smith Rowe

There's moments here when Smith Rowe either picks up the ball from deep and drives us forward or plays a lovely one-two in the final third, and you just think you're starting to see the boy's quality. But far too often the stuff in between looks so lethargic, not making runs into the box when we need them, hiding behind defenders instead of finding gaps to receive the ball in in dangerous areas. It's not even a criticism to say he needs more because of his price tag, he just has to do more full stop. 5.5/10.

Adama Traore

Considering how shocking we were in the final third in the first half, Adama seemed the main bright spark in our front six, as the only attacking player showing any intent to take on his full back or combine with the players running beyond him in the final third. His cross to the opposite wing to find Robinson in the build up for our equaliser was perfectly executed and was another example of the composure he can show at times, if not frequently enough. 7/10.

Alex Iwobi

As mentioned in the write up regarding Robinson, I think there would be a frustration there regarding the lack of cover offered up by Iwobi at the back post to prevent Newcastle scoring, and often it has been the case that whilst Wilson may help track back, Iwobi simply doesn't. At the other end, it was one of his poorer showings this season. Every single crossed seemed limp and loopy and rarely came close to finding a purple shirt. 5.5/10.

Raul Jimenez

More than anyone in the first half, you may have expected Jimenez to seem frustrated and deflated. He had one effort on the left side of the box that would've gone for a throw in if it had any power on it, and he couldn't lay a glove on Newcastle's defence at all. In the second half, however, he epitomised everything that was good about the Whites' improvement in and out of possession. He looked determined to get his foot on the ball all over the pitch, which ultimately led to him winning the ball back in his own half, which resulted in an attack that he put the finishing touch onto, via a Newcastle deflection, to equalise. 7.5/10 – Man of the match.

Substitutes

Andreas Pereira (72' for Smith Rowe)

Looked desperate to earn his side the points when he came on. At one end, he made a clearance and a block when Newcastle pushed to gain some vital points themselves. At the other end, he pressed high and put in a pearl of a delivery to assist the winner, a cross we need to see far more of, both from open play and set pieces. 7/10.

Rodrigo Muniz (72' for Jimenez)

Chased every single ball from the moment he came on, offering a different type of threat up front in the way he ran the channels and contested in the air. Scored a superbly deft winning goal, his fourth meaningful away goal of the season at a top team, slowly developing into a big game player, maybe. 7/10.

Ryan Sessegnon (80' for Iwobi) and Issa Diop (88' for Traore) on too late to be fairly assessed.

Manager

Marco Silva

At half time, I must admit I was expecting to be writing about so many similar aspects of his management that I've critiqued in recent weeks regarding tactical stubbornness and an inability to get his team fired up for Premier League games. However, that second half has given me so much hope that we've given ourselves a benchmark to find this level more often going forwards and that Silva may have understood the need to adapt and evolve more often. The way he changed our pressing patterns, attacking patterns of play and intensity in the second half was incredible, to the point where Newcastle must have felt they were playing a different team to the one they faced in the opening 45 minutes. To top that off, it was ultimately Marco's two main subs in Muniz and Pereira that combined to score the goal that earned Fulham all three points. Bravo, Marco, more proof of proactive management and a plan B going forward, please. 7.5/10.

Fulham offer loan deal to sign Zeki Celik from AS Roma
Fulham will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old Turkish international Zeki Celik on loan from Serie A club AS Roma before the winter transfer window shuts down.

According to a report by reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Zeki Celik is the subject of interest from Fulham. The Cottagers have been scouring the market for a right-back heading into the winter transfer window. So, they have approached AS Roma with a loan bid to sign the 27-year-old full-back, although the Serie A club's manager, Claudio Ranieri, has yet to approve the move.

Zeki Celik and his career so far
Zeki Celik has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining AS Roma from LOSC Lille in July 2022. A native of Bursa, the Turk spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Bursaspor. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with LOSC Lille before joining the Serie A club two and a half years ago.

The 27-year-old has been in and out of the starting lineup throughout his spell with the Giallorossi, although he has been a regular starter this term. Celik has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for AS Roma while chipping in with four assists.

However, Celik's long-term future at AS Roma is uncertain after entering the final 18 months of his contract with the Serie A club. In addition, his status as the first-choice right-back is under threat after Devyne Rensch arrived from Ajax last month. The situation has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, with Fulham among his prospective suitors this month.

London calling?
Fulham's interest in Zeki Celik is understandable. The Cottagers have been scouring the market for a right-back heading into the winter transfer window. While Timothy Castagne has been a solid addition to the first-team squad, Kenny Tete's absence through a long-term knee injury has necessitated the arrival of a new right-back.

So, several candidates, including Emerson Royal, have emerged on Fulham's radar. However, the Cottagers have set their sights on another Serie A-based full-back, approaching AS Roma with a bid to sign Celik on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. However, Claudio Ranieri has yet to approve the 27-year-old Turk's departure.

So, Fulham will wait with bated breaths for Ranieri's response as they look to sign a right-back before the winter transfer window shuts down. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Turkish international amid his links with the West London club.

Fulham are reportedly interested in signing Leeds United winger Jack Harrison, who is currently out on loan at Everton.

That's according to the Daily Mail, who claim that the Cottagers are weighing up a late move for Harrison before Monday's transfer deadline amid uncertainty over his future at Everton.

After helping the Toffees to Premier League survival last season, Harrison returned for a second loan spell at Goodison Park in the summer, but his game time has been much more limited this campaign.

Jack Harrison's stats for Everton (as per Transfermarkt)
Appearances                  22
Starts                  12
Goals                  0
Assists                  0
Stats correct as of 2nd February 2025

That has led to speculation that Harrison's time on Merseyside could be cut short, particularly as new manager David Moyes is looking to add to his squad before the end of the window, but the Mirror claimed earlier this week that Everton are planning to keep hold of him until the season as initially agreed.

However, with Fulham now showing interest in Harrison, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees' stance will change, and his situation is one to watch between now and 11pm tomorrow night.

Fulham looking to take over Everton's Jack Harrison loan deal
Harrison spent three years on loan at Leeds from Manchester City between 2018 and 2021, and he helped them to promotion to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa in the 2019-20 season.

The move was finally made permanent in July 2021 for a fee of £11 million, and Harrison signed a new five-year contract to keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2028 in April 2023.

However, just over a month after Harrison committed his future to the club, the Whites were relegated to the Championship, and Harrison joined Everton on a temporary basis last summer.

Harrison was a regular for the Toffees last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 35 appearances in all competitions, and that was enough to convince Sean Dyche to bring him back to Goodison Park for a second loan spell in June.

Unfortunately for Harrison, his place in the team has been much less secure this time around, and after starting Moyes' first game in charge against Aston Villa last month, he has found himself on the bench for Everton's last three matches.

There have been conflicting reports about whether the Toffees are keen to keep hold of Harrison until the summer, but Fulham are now plotting a move before the deadline, and they may be able to offer the 28-year-old more game time.

Leeds United facing Jack Harrison dilemma as Fulham circle
It remains to be seen whether Fulham are keen to sign Harrison on loan or on a permanent basis, but Leeds will be facing a big decision on how to respond should the Cottagers make an offer for the winger.

With the Whites flying high at the top of the Championship, they look likely to be a Premier League side next season, and given Harrison's vast top flight experience, they may be keen to reintegrate him back into their squad in the summer.

However, given that Harrison has twice decided against playing for the club in the second tier, supporters may be reluctant to welcome him back to Elland Road, and it could be best for all parties if he was to make a full-time exit.

Report: Everton winger Jack Harrison set to secure deadline day move to Premier League club
Fulham have reportedly set their sights on Jack Harrison as the transfer deadline looms, despite the winger currently being on loan at Everton from Leeds United.

According to the Daily Mail, the Cottagers are monitoring Harrison's situation closely ahead of the February 3 deadline.

There were whispers of a potential return to Leeds, but that never gained traction. Now, a move to Craven Cottage could be on the cards as the clock ticks down, with the deadline up tomorrow at 11pm.

Harrison's struggles at Everton raise questions about his long-term future. With Leeds United well-stocked in his position and little indication of a role for him at Elland Road, a fresh start elsewhere seems inevitable.

Talk of a Leeds comeback has been dismissed, and given the quality in Daniel Farke's squad, it's hard to see how Harrison would fit in, given the amount of wingers that have at their disposal.

A move to Fulham could see him make regular minutes while being implemented in a system that suits his strengths and might help him rediscover the form that once made him a key player.

Despite making 19 Premier League appearances for Everton this season, Harrison has yet to contribute a goal or an assist. His future now looks increasingly uncertain, with neither Leeds nor Everton appearing to be the long-term solution.

Fulham submit offer to sign 53-cap international defender, talks ongoing
Fulham have now submitted an offer to sign a 53-cap international defender on a loan deal with an obligation to buy, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Cottagers pushing for the top six
Goals from Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz completed a second-half turnaround for the Cottagers at St. James' Park on Saturday, propelling them up to ninth in the Premier League table.

After the impressive victory over Newcastle United, Marco Silva's side are now knocking on the door of the European places, just four points behind rivals Chelsea, who currently occupy sixth place.

It has been a quiet January transfer window for the west Londoners, however, and Silva may feel some new additions are needed before tomorrow's deadline if his side's European dreams are to become a reality.

Earlier this week, it was reported Fulham were pursuing two forwards, in the form of St. Johnstone's Brodie Dair and Partisan Belgrade's Dusan Jovanovic, with an offer for the former being accepted by the Scottish club.

Now, it appears as though the Cottagers are also keen to strengthen their backline, with Romano revealing they have submitted a loan bid for AS Roma's Zeki Celik, which includes an obligation to buy clause.

The Italian side are now said to be evaluating the offer for Celik, with Claudio Ranieri yet to give the green light, and talks are set to continue before the transfer deadline.

A report from Gianluca Di Marzio makes it clear Roma want to get the right-back off the books permanently, having brought in former Ajax captain Devyne Rensch this month, so a loan deal which includes an obligation to buy could be appealing.

Kenny Tete replacement needed at Craven Cottage
With Kenny Tete set to be sidelined for a considerable period of time due to a knee injury, Silva could do with more options at right-back, so it makes sense to pursue a deal for the Roma right-back before the window slams shut.

The Turk is highly experienced at international level, having amassed 53 caps for his country, and he has received consistent game time in all competitions for his current employers this season, including seven outings in the Europa League.

Castagne has by and large been solid at right-back in Tete's absence, so it may be difficult for Celik to force his way into the starting XI immediately, but it is certainly good news that Silva is looking to bring in additional depth in defence.

Goals from Jimenez and Muniz to secure the win at St. James' Park on Saturday underlined the fact that Silva's side are well-stocked in attack, with the former now on nine Premier League goals this term, so a new right-back appears to be the priority target.

BBC Sport comments from 'neutrals' – Interesting on Newcastle United after Fulham
Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United losing to Fulham.

United now with ten wins from their last twelve games.

Alternatively, two defeats in their last three.

The comments from neutrals especially telling...

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport 'neutrals'.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics (almost...) entirely absent, concentrating on matters on the pitch.

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Fulham fans and the odd Newcastle United supporter also contributing:

'It's all about the ability of the opposition Manager to plan for the "usual Howe setup", use tactics to counter it and take the chances NUFC present to all teams. All the while knowing Howe won't be able to adapt. Silva has always been a better Manager than Howe.'

'Maybe you should apply for the Manager's job?'

'The league positions (facts) do not agree with your opinion. Howe is a very good manager.'

'Ten wins in twelve. Such a terrible run of form, eh?'

'You are wrong. Howe took a team from the brink of the national league to the Premier league, then a team from bottom to a fourth and seventh place finish. Howe has managed in the Champions League. Remind me, what qualifies Silva to be better than Howe. Prior to this season, Fulham hadn't beat Newcastle in ten years. Fulham are below Newcastle in the league... So your comment is rubbish.'

'Mate Newcastle anit know better than Fulham in fact football standards we out played u in every department, sour grapes that r bias.'

'Yeah, Fulham were better today. Deserved their win. But you sound a bit off so thanks for giving us 9 seasons of points.'

'Opposition fans always overreact when they pose to Fulham, as if Fulham are a rubbish team. We've got a strong squad and Sulva is a fantastic manager.'

'The boos at full time just demonstrate how entitled many Newcastle fans are.'

'This is why I am glad I don't support a team (rare i know). The sort of fan mentality that boos your team when they're 5th in the league, in what is a very competitive division. It's not like Newcastle are 15th and just lost to Ipswich. Fulham are a good side. Ridiculous. Just ridiculous.'

'Believe it or not, the behaviour you described isn't mandatory, and Newcastle have some pretty awful fans
Don't get me wrong, they should be booing, but for very different reasons.'

'I was there. The boos were for the referee, not our own players. We're not like some other clubs...'

'Newcastle will bounce back. Howe is a very good manager.'

'The booing was for the poor ref display, not the team.'

'Has Howe ever won anything or managed a top club personally think he's taken the mag's far has he can.'

'HOGWASH – if Silva was always better than Eddie then we wouldn't have done the double over Fulham the previous two seasons nor beaten them in the FA Cup last season.

Stop embarrassing yourself – you know nowt about football.'

'Always good to see Saudi FC lose.'

'Well, I wasn't expecting THAT! We couldn't beat Man U at home, and we go to the Toon and get a win! I seriously thought we were going to get tonked. Happy Fulham fan.'

'More away joy for Fulham. Why bother with our inflated prices at home. Great away support again. COYW.'

'I have not felt such positivity since 2010 – I hope Silva has further plans with Fulham because I get the feeling that with the right support from the owners he could take us anywhere.'

'(Villa fan) Pathetic performance,'

'As a Fulham fan it's a great result and a equally annoying one as well.how can the same team do the double over Newcastle and be the only team to beat Forest at there gaff but not beat Southampton at home and not beat Ipswich home or away.still onward and upward UTF.'

'To be fair we beat Man U and Tottenham too, so it's not just better clubs. Maybe "glamour" clubs?

As the table stands the only teams to have beaten Newcastle in any competition this season outside the top half are Brentford in 11th and West Ham in 14th.

On a day that Wolves (18th up to 17th) beat one of our supposed Champions League rivals, isn't that a positive indicator?'

'What is the point of Paul Mitchell and his army of scouts?'

'Lots of grumbling about recruitment (that probably wouldn't be there if we were winning these games). Truth is there isn't quality out there that will improve our squad unless we pay ridiculous money, which would probably make sales of star players in the future inevitable.

If we can pick up a bargain, great. Otherwise do what we do best, sign absolute gems in the summer.'

'Not sure why people think every team should beat Fulham, whenever I see them play they always look a decent well organised team that can upset bigger and better teams on their day.'

'I just love the PL this year. Apart from Liverpool who are a class apart, anyone can beat anyone. NU are in good nick and have good players but as Fulham proved today, they have good players too. Many teams in this league have players that can hurt the opposition. Makes for great viewing, even if the so called big 6 don't like it.'

'Perhaps too many haven't seen how well Fulham have steadily improved under Silva?

They certainly have and the result will not have shocked anybody that much.'

'They found a way to neutralise Joelinton and that kind of cascaded through the team.

If Newcastle had been anything close to clinical it could have been 3-0 before Fulham shoved their first man over. But they stuck to their plan, rode their luck and got their reward.'
