It's big but not big enough for his ego.

Quote from: bencher on April 06, 2025, 08:27:22 AMMost teams in the PL get relegated because they can't defend well enough. He has shown some ability to make his teams hard to beat, and that could be a solid base for doing ok in the PL next season.

In life people can improve at what they are doing as they learn from mistakes and pick up more experience and knowhow. Football management can be unforgiving but who is to say that he has not improved since he left us. Burnley tried playing expansive football under Kompany and it didn't work in the PL. Their track record of doing well was by playing Dyche turgid percentage style football. Not that Parker plays like that particularly, but they would probably do well do try a bit of that next season if they go up. Everton are currently playing that style under Moyes quite well.

I think club brugge might have something to say about how he's 'improved' since leaving us.

I do however disagree with your assessment, parker's Burnley us already showing an inability to score goals against some opposition and being against better defences in the form of prem teams will just compound this, further evident is shown in our own performances in the premier league under parker, we always looked okay, decent on the ball, possession stats always good, we didn't have many shots but we also didn't concede many, the thing was we would usually concede one and that was enough.

Remember how on the fence everyone was about parker, we didn't get demolished, we looked reasonably in the game throughout, it's just passing for passing sake does not score goals in the prem.

I also disagree that Everton play a similar system. Everton have little possession, using the ball quickly to move up the pitch and get a shot on goal, a huge counter attacking focus, Burnley do not counter attack.

I was on the fence about Parker at the end but in retrospect it was because the quality of our squad was more in question.

Looking back now it is painfully obvious he did not get anywhere near the most out of that team. He had a team filled with Premier League players that were relegated. Other than Harrison Reed I don't think he got the best out of any of them.

I stand corrected with this statement. Today there was no sideways, backwards, negative football on display.

I know we just signed him, but give him a new contract but with an £80m release clause.

Out of curiosity, Isn't it better to just not have a release clause? It's not mandatory.

I'm all for a longer contract though.

It just means that we set an expectation to other clubs and to the player himself about what we would expect to receive if we were to sell him. Not setting one could mean they become unsettled if a big club like Liverpool comes along and makes a meagre bid.

Personally I don't think players are quite that simple minded. As of now, he is of course not worth anything near that, so even if we set an 80 million clause, he wouldn't expect us to turn everything else down. Likewise, clubs wouldn't just think that we would refuse to discuss lower offers.

In my mind, the only thing a clause such such as that does is to take away our possibility to negotiate should the player improve to world class level. If he doesn't, the clause is meaningless because no one (including the player himself) would expect the price to be anywhere near that amount.

As for setting expectations, that could just as easily be done without a clause, since I assume that the club and the player talks to each other.

But that is my take.

Quote from: Sammyffc on April 05, 2025, 10:14:07 AMnot surprised. there were quite a few leaks from when he was with us about how much of a ***** he is and more than half the team didnt like him. Let alone how fast the leaks from bournemouth came out on their forums, wasn't it in the first week he had a bust up with a long term employee? they couldn't wait for him to get out. :slap:

Most of the leaks were in our defence that year, from what I can remember

I think Sess has found out that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.
