Ireland 3 Wales 0: Gibson and Duff shine as Irish sink woeful Welsh in Nations Cup opener

By Colin Young

Last updated at 12:08 AM on 9th February 2011

This was about gettogethers, motivational speeches, and an understanding of what it means to be Welsh and playing for Gary Speed.

It was about preparations for the Euro 2012 showdown with England on March 26, which is why Craig Bellamy was along for the trip, despite his weak knees, and why the likes of John Hartson were propping up the bar of the Welsh team hotel.

This may have been the opening match of a new home nations tournament but the result was not that important for Wales's new manager.

Duffed up: Damien Duff doubles Ireland's lead in Dublin

And it's just as well. Speed's boys were outplayed by the Republic of Ireland, on the few occasions they did actually play in a poor game, and second-half goals from Darron Gibson, Damien Duff and Keith Fahey gave the hosts an emphatic win and the opening points on the opening night.

Wales looked solid enough, as Speed was close to picking his first-choice back four, but in attack they looked clueless.

They had one penalty shout when Hal Robson-Kanu was pulled back by Seamus Coleman - 'absolutely a penalty', said Speed - and a few long-range efforts easily gathered by Shay Given.

Chasing shadows: Wales struggled to find any rhythm

Wales are depending on the return of Bellamy and Gareth Bale before they will feel confident about meeting the English.

But Speed was still satisfied with the week's work and, despite the result, will be in optimistic mood as he prepares in place for his first competitive game. He said: 'In the first half we didn't pass the ball as well as we can do, I have seen the lads can pass the ball better, but we defended really well.

In the second half we started quite brightly but they scored a great goal and once that went in our heads went down a bit, which is the way it has been in the last few years.

Damien Duff happy with Republic Nations win over Wales

Damien Duff celebrates after scoring the Republic's second goal

Damien Duff said that the Republic of Ireland's Nations Cup win over Wales augured well for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Duff scored his first Republic goal in over two years while Darron Gibson and Keith Fahey were also on target.

"It's nice to get the points on the board in this competition," said Duff.

"This is a chance of silverware and we are in with a good chance, but the most important thing is qualifying for the European Championships."

Duff added:""The Welsh lads made us work for it, but we played well and thoroughly deserved the win."

Everton defender Seamus Coleman was delighted after earning his first Republic cap in the 3-0 win.

"Finally getting my first cap for Ireland was great and getting a good 60 minutes under my felt was brilliant," said the Donegal man.

3-0 whupping but it is only Wales

Kennys_Heroes
"It was a fantastic win and a good confidence boost for our next games."

The Irish will be in action next on 26 March in their European Championship qualifier against Macedonia in Dublin.

Wales captain James Collins rued individual errors as Gary Speed's first game in charge ended in a comprehensive defeat at the Aviva Stadium.

"We went in at half-time quite happy as they had not created that many chances," said the Aston Villa defender.

"But we made individual errors which cost us, and that has been the case in the past and we need to cut those out if we are to move on.

"But this is the start of a long campaign under the new manager."

Fulham on alert as Freiburg prepare to sell striker

By Declan Taylor

Tuesday, February 8

Premier League clubs are already lining up summer bids for Freiburg hotshot Papiss Demba Cisse after the Bundesliga club admitted defeat in their attempt to hold on to him.

One Premier League club, understood to be Fulham, made contact with Freiburg in January about doing a deal for Cisse - but his club dismissed all enquiries.

But Cisse's agent Guido Nickolay has revealed that Freiburg have now named their price for the £12.5m-rated striker, who has hit 15 goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances this season.
"
Freiburg do not want to sell but they are a smaller club and will sell at the right price
"
Guido Nickolay
"Freiburg do not want to sell but they are a smaller club and will sell at the right price," Nickolay said.

"They know the figure they want for him - but I cannot say it. They are ready to do business in the summer. But it isn't just Premier League clubs who want him - there are other clubs in Italy and Spain too.

"There was interest from the Premier League in January but Freiburg made sure they kept him until the end of the season. There will be more, but now it won't be until the summer."

Etheridge's International Challenge

Tuesday 8th February 2011

Fulham and Philippine international goalkeeper Neil Etheridge flew to Manila last weekend ahead of this week's play-off match (1st leg) against Mongolia at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

On arriving in the Philippines Etheridge took the time to thank Fulham FC for granting him permission to play for his home nation as his bright start to 2011 continues. At the start of the year Etheridge was Fulham's second choice keeper behind David Stockdale during Mark Schwarzer's participation in the Asian Cup 2011.

"I can't be thankful enough," said Etheridge. "They [Fulham FC] really did support me and they've supported me coming out here. They've given me permission after being on the bench for the last six to seven games in the Premier League.

"I'm always looking to improve my game and I actually think my athleticism, kicking and confidence have improved from being involved with the First Team in the Premier League."

In December 2010, Etheridge helped the Philippines to the Suzuki Cup Semi Finals, which included a victory over last season's Champions, Vietnam. The Philippines eventually lost to Indonesia in the Final four but the Azkals run was seen as a major step forward.

As one of the eight lowest-ranked teams out of 20 in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup, the Philippines must overcome Mongolia over two legs to be played on the 9th and 16th February to reach the 16-team group phase.

"I know it will be a hard game but I am sure we're capable as a unit and as a squad," said Etheridge. "We can override both legs and move on in the competition."

Should Etheridge and company overcome Mongolia the Philippines will compete against Myanmar, Palestine and Bangladesh in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup between the 20th and 31st Match 2011.

Neighbours kick off in Mark Hughes mansion storm

February 09, 2011

Mark Hughes

Former City manager Mark Hughes has angered villagers by applying to tear down part of a Victorian villa and turn it into a 'green' family home.

Hughes, also a former United star, has submitted a planning application to demolish the back of a property in Alderley Edge, and turn it into a mansion with swimming pool and gym.

The historic façade would be left intact.

The property, Brampton House, on Trafford Road, dates from the 1850s and was originally called Osborne House, after the royal residence on the Isle of Wight.

The plans show the house would be rebuilt to include a four-car garage, a three-storey family home and a guest room.

But neighbour Elizabeth Mooney said: "If this planning application is allowed to go ahead, there will be a precedent for this sort of development in the village.

"We don't care who it is but we need people to understand it's not all celebrities who live here. There are blue-collar workers and elderly people as well, and we need to make sure Alderley Edge retains its unique character."

Hughes, now manager of Fulham, submitted the plans to Cheshire East Council in May last year but they were rejected. Fitzsimon Planning, the consultants hired by Hughes, appealed against that decision at a hearing at Wilmslow Leisure Centre and have applied to the Planning Inspectorate to reclaim costs from CEC. Neighbours spoke out again at the meeting to register their objections to the planning inspector.

Martin Sinker, of The Edge Association, said: "We are concerned about the impact this application will have."

Daniel Fitzsimon, of Fitzsimon Planning, told the inquiry: "It seems that the council is frightened to death of every historic building in the conservation area being demolished.

"But that's not what we're seeking to do – we've given it thoughtful consideration."

A decision on the plan is expected within the next month.

Villa rebuffed in January bid for former Black Cat

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier failed in a January transfer window bid to sign former Sunderland midfielder Lorik Cana from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

The player's representative has admitted that he met with Houllier to discuss the transfer, while the Premier League duo Fulham and Bolton Wanderers were also interested in the former Sunderland skipper.

Cana, 27, was an instant hit in the Premier League establishing himself as the Black Cats captain following a £5 million move from Galatasaray. He joined Gala after a single season in the Premier League for £4.5 million sighting personal reasons for his departure.

"Lazio made an offer for my client. Even Aston Villa, Fulham and Bolton Wanderers showed an interest in the player.

"I personally met in Paris the coach of Aston Villa (Gerard Houllier), who has done everything to take Lorik to the Premier League.

"Lazio made the highest offer - €4.5 million. The proposal was attractive, but the Turkish club refused."

Bobby Zamora marks return with goal

9 Feb 2011

Bobby Zamora marked his Fulham comeback with a goal in the club's reserve match against Brighton yesterday.

Zamora has been out since breaking his leg against Wolves in September.

The England striker is due to return to action in around three weeks' time and will have done his chances of an early recall no harm by scoring against his former club in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the club's training ground at Motspur Park yesterday.

A recent upturn in form has seen Fulham rise to 12th in the Barclays Premier League table, but they still have the fifth-worst scoring record in the division.

Mousa Dembele, Andy Johnson, Diomansy Kamara and Clint Dempsey have all weighed in with goals but none of them have been as prolific as Zamora was last season when he bagged 19 times - his biggest haul in top-flight football.

That form saw him come close to making England's provisional World Cup squad but his hopes of going to South Africa were dashed after he picked up an Achilles injury towards the end of the campaign.

The 30-year-old went on to earn his first international cap against Hungary in August and has three goals to his name for Fulham so far this season.

Damien Duff sparkles for country as well as club – and the boss is delighted

Damien Duff followed up his excellent first half of the season at club level by scoring his first international goal for two years as the Republic of Ireland made it a disappointing debut as Wales boss for Gary Speed.

Fulham winger Duff, back to his dazzling best, was a threat throughout and was delighted to play a big part in Ireland's confidence-boosting win in the opening game of the new Carling Nations Cup.

"It was nice, I haven't scored for a couple of years and it's nice to get the points on the board in this new competition," Duff said. "The Welsh lads made us work for it, but we played well and thoroughly deserved the win.

"This is a chance of silverware and we are in with a good chance, but the most important thing is qualifying for the European Championships, so the big one is next month."

The Republic were without the likes of Robbie Keane, Aiden McGeady and Kevin Kilbane but, in Duff, had one senior player in outstanding form.

Coach Giovanni Trapattoni said: "I saw his last game for his club and he was fantastic. God forbid any more injuries to him. He gives the team personality, this is important.

"Players like him are very important at international level and we can win with players like him. We need one or two more players like him."

Trapattoni was also pleased with debutants Seamus Coleman and Ciaran Clark, while Darron Gibson – doing what he does best – and Keith Fahey opened their international goal accounts.

"It was important to see them in this competition," said Trapattoni of his new boys. "With the performance of these two players I am very happy."

Zamora scores on Fulham comeback

Feb 9 2011 By Jacob Murtagh

Bobby Zamora

BOBBY Zamora stepped up his recovery from a broken leg with a run-out for the reserves in a friendly against Brighton yesterday.

The England striker has been sidelined since getting crocked against Wolves last September, but is making good progress as he battles back to fitness.

He played the first 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game against his former club, scoring Fulham's only goal in a 3-1 defeat.

He is unlikely to be ready in time for Monday's SW6 derby, but could be on the bench for the FA Cup clash against Bolton or Wigan on Sunday week.

Mushekwi on Fulham's radar – report

Posted: 2011-02-09 11:59

Mamelodi Sundowns' Zimbabwean striker Nyasha Mushekwi has strayed onto the radar of English Premiership side Fulham following a successful debut season in the Absa Premiership.

The powerful 23-year-old, who is deadly both in the air and on the ground, took his League goal tally to eight in 17 matches on Sunday after a double strike guided the Brazilians to a 3-1 win over Santos in Pretoria.

Mushekwi is now only two goals behind countryman Knowledge Musona, the Kaizer Chiefs forward who leads the race for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award.

The former CAPS United hitman, who won the Golden Boot in his final full season in the domestic Premiership in 2009, has not escaped the attention of European clubs and reports indicate that Fulham have been monitoring his progress.

Mushekwi fits well into the type of strikers favoured by English teams given his built, pace, threat in the air, eye for goal and his conversion rate.

Fifa agent Ralph Nkomo, who is also the manager of Warriors leftback Onismor Bhasera, told Zimbabwe's Herald that there was growing interest in Mushekwi in Europe.

"I think Nyasha fits the bill well because of his physique, which makes him the old-fashioned African centre-forward that English clubs usually want because they have seen it work well with the likes of Didier Drogba," said Nkomo.

"He has this physical presence about him and the fact that he scores goals and has pace has all helped boost his profile here and his name keeps cropping up when enquiries are made related to strikers.

"Fulham have been tracking him and, now that the transfer window has closed, we have to see how he continues to develop over the next few months until the end of the season.

"Contact has been made with his handlers about the possibility of Mushekwi coming to play in Europe soon and I think it's all shaping up nicely and there is no need to rush things and all that the boy needs to do is to continue scoring goals."

With Katlego Mphela, who has been Awol as he presses for a move from Sundowns to Europe, now certain to leave the club, Mushekwi is now certain to get an extended stay in the starting XI, starting with this weekend's top-of-the-table clash against Orlando Pirates.

Man of the Match

Wednesday 9th February 2011

The Republic of Ireland beat Wales 3-0 in the opening match of the Carling Nations Cup on Tuesday night, with Fulham winger Damien Duff scoring Ireland's second goal of the game after 67 minutes.

The contest marked Gary Speed's first game in charge of Wales but it was the home side that took total control in the second half on Tuesday evening at the Aviva Stadium.

Manchester United's Darron Gibson scored Ireland's first goal with a stunning shot from 25 yards on the hour mark before Duff made it two seven minutes later, firing past Wayne Hennessey from 12 yards.

Duff certainly carried his impressive recent form for Fulham into Tuesday's game, delivering a performance that earned him the 'Man of the Match' award. After the game Duff was clearly delighted to have scored but was already turning his attention towards the Republic's crucial Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia on March 26th.

"It was nice to score again for Ireland after quite a while," said Duff. "It has become a bit of an issue over the last couple of years so it was good to get back on the score-sheet.

"But what was more important was to win the match and get the three points and I believed we deserved to do that. Wales made us work hard but I think we deserved it and we played a nice bit of football at times.

"We must have a good chance of winning the Carling Nations Cup and as much as it would be important to go on and win it now, it would be more important, I think, to qualify for the UEFA Championship finals and we have a big one against Macedonia next month."

Seagulls sentence Zamora to a defeat

9:30am Wednesday 9th February 2011

By Andy Naylor

Albion have been praised by Fulham for the way they play after sentencing Bobby Zamora to a losing comeback.

Zamora was in a Fulham side beaten 3-1 by the Seagulls' reserves in a friendly at the Premier League club's training ground yesterday.

The ex-Albion star played for 45 minutes, his first outing since breaking a leg against Wolves in September.

Charlie Oatway, Albion's reserve team boss and former team-mate of Zamora, said: "I know Bob won't be pleased with the result.

"It was a very good performance. Fulham were very complimentary about the way we try to play football."

Lewis Dunk, partnering Tommy Elphick in the centre of defence, headed Albion into the lead.

Fulham were level by half-time thanks to Zamora but Albion won with second half goals by Cristian Baz and Jake Forster-Caskey.

Oatway added: "We made seven changes with half-an-hour to go, bringing on a lot of the development squad players. The pleasing thing is they kept on playing exactly the same way."

Albion's starting line-up included assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and fellow Argentinian Emmanuel Ledesma, making his second appearance on trial in his quest to earn a contract.

The 22-year-old former QPR attacking midfielder scored on his debut last month for the reserves against Wycombe Wanderers.

Tickets for Albion's FA Cup fifth round tie at Stoke a week on Saturday are on sale today to blue members and Young Seagulls. They have sold about 1,000 tickets so far.

Zamora back with a bang as striker bags goal on return for Fulham reserves against Brighton after six-month injury lay-off

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 9:20 AM on 9th February 2011

Bobby Zamora handed Fulham boss Mark Hughes a major boost on Tuesday as the England striker ended his six-month injury lay-off with a goalscoring return for the reserves.

The 30-year-old has been missing since last September when he suffered a broken leg against Wolves at Craven Cottage.

But Zamora, who won his first international cap in August against Hungary at Wembley and has three club goals to his name so far this term, was back with a bang in action for Fulham's second-string side.

Comeback trail: Zamora, who has been out since September, scored on his return to action for Fulham's reserves against Brighton on Tuesday

He scored in the win over his former club Brighton in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the club's Motspur Park training ground.

Fulham boss Hughes has had to make do with a makeshift strike-line for most of the season with Zamora sidelined alongside summer signing Moussa Dembele, who has also recently returned.

Andy Johnson has recently returned to first team duty but Hughes will undoubtedly be most encouraged by the sight of Zamora, whose 19 goals last season helped inspired an incredible run to the UEFA Europa League cup final, back on the pitch.

With the club in 12th place in the Barclays Premier League, the Welshman will be hoping the former West Ham man's return will coincide with a further push up the table as they look to ease any concerns over relegation.

Wait is over: Zamora is back after six months on the sidelines with a broken leg

But Hughes, who signed Eidur Gudjohnsen in the January transfer window, warned Zamora last week that he will have a fight on his hands to reclaim his place in the team.

He said: 'He understands that the squad is evolving now and the squad is getting bigger and stronger.

'Bobby knows he needs to work hard to get back in the side but, given his desire to get back in, that shouldn't faze him at all.'
