Games for mid-week 11/01

We’re making the short trip to play Reading at the renamed “Madejski” now the “Select Car Leasing Stadium”

Reading v Fulham

It was a shame that we missed out on the game however, due to COVID (yeah right) and injuries to the Reading team, we’ve now got a chance to get our own back against Reading for the defeat earlier in the season.

@WalkAndTalkMMH had organised a walk from Craven Cottage to Reading, thankfully they weren’t affected by either COVID or injuries and walked through the night anyway, such a shame their efforts couldn’t be rewarded with a game to watch at the end of their walk!

After having 3 games cancelled we now find ourselves 4 points behind Bournemouth, hopefully this game will allow us to claw 3 points back.

After a rather lacklustre performance against Bristol City in the cup, still at least we won, we did look better once more of the “first” team came on in the 2nd half. Hopefully that return to winning ways will be just the spark we need to reignite our league campaign.

Our record against Reading is remarkably even with 7 wins and losses and 4 draws

Current league form:
Reading LWDLP
Fulham DDDLP

With Seri off this would be my team, once again assuming that everyone is fit…

Games for the Weekend 08/01

It’s the FA Cup this weekend and we get to travel to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City

This is our first game in what seems like forever, Birmingham, Reading and Swansea fixtures all having been cancelled due to COVID.
Marco will have a decision to make about who plays in this game, will he select his “first” team, effectively giving them a warm-up game, or give some of the “2nd string” players a run out?
We need to get back into some sort of form, we were, by our standards, in quite a poor run before the cancelled games, this could be just the game to kick start our 2nd half of the season?

If I was in charge I’d play as close to a full strength squad as I could, my team would be…

Remember it’s a 12:30 kick-off.

Games for the Weekend 26/12

Boxing Day at the Cottage where we welcome Birmingham City for a 3 o’clock kick off

Fulham v Birmingham City

Well the unbeaten run had to end at some time, shame it was with a bit of a whimper at the end.
The game against Birmingham will be a tough one, Lee Bower’s teams are a hard working, well schooled outfit.

However our record against Birmingham is quite a good one with 9 wins, 5 losses and 4 draws.

Birmingham – DWLDL

Games for the Weekend 18/12

We have to wait until Monday for our game against Sheffield Utd at the Cottage.

Fulham v Sheffield Utd

This should have been the game where we welcomed back Slavisa however the “powers that be” at Sheffield decided he wasn’t the man for them and replaced him with Paul Heckingbottom who was their caretaker manager last season.

It was good to see Mitro back scoring after a couple of barren games hopefully all of the squad will have recovered from the bout of sickness and be fully fit for this game.

Our record against Sheff Utd is quite good with 4 wines, 2 losses and 2 draws.

Games for the Weekend 11/12

We travel to Kenilworth Road to take on Luton Town for a 3 o’clock kick off

Luton Town v Fulham

Friday nights draw against Bournemouth was a little bit of a disappointment, yet again obvious penalty claims ignored and how Bournemouth kept 11 players on the pitch is a bit of a mystery? My favourite chant was when we replied “we’re top of the league” after Tosin’s goal, Bournemouth fans had vocalised the same message after their goal, schadenfreude can be a good thing?

Anyhow, on to Luton, I know our friend HatterDon will be looking forward to this game, and it’s good to see Luton still in the Championship after their difficult initial season. Luton will be encouraged by their 0-3 win away at Blackpool so we’ll have to be “on our game”, there are no easy games in the Championship.
Hopefully the sickness bug has run its course and most of the squad are back to something close to full fitness. Mitro will be disappointed that he’s not scored in the previous 3 and will be keen to rectify that this weekend.

Our record against Luton is only a couple of games, a draw and a win, so not enough to gauge? however current run of form is:
Luton: LLDLW
Fulham: WWDDD

Games for the weekend 3/12

Is this the biggest game of the season so far? we welcome Bournemouth for a Friday evening game to the Cottage.

Fulham v Bournemouth

So a top of the table clash against a former manger who alienated some (most?) of the current squad, should be a good game.
Surprisingly since we leap-frogged Bournemouth to go top, both teams could only manage draws, the Baggies have also had a bit of a dip with QPR overtaking them in 3rd place.
Currently we’re still a point above Bournemouth however with a goal difference of +33 to their +20 a win on Friday would see us 4 points and (at least) 15 goals ahead of them.
Whilst it’s far too early in the season to say that this is “the” Championship decider, a victory would give a real boost to either team.

If it wasn’t for the illness effecting the Fulham squad, unconfirmed rumours are that its norovirus which, while unpleasant and highly contagious, usually only lasts a couple of days, there might a slight concern about our drop in form.
Bournemouth have recently suffered a couple of losses, after a long unbeaten run, and the last 2 games had 2 draws. In the last game against Coventry they were 2-0 up in the 85 minute only to finish 2-2 with the equalised coming on 90+5, Lerma’s sending off probably had a big part in that result? I think most of us can remember Scott Parker’s tactic of “holding on” once you’ve gone ahead, I’m guessing it backfired yet again?

Fulham WWWDD
Bournemouth LWLDD

One player who I’m certain will be “up for it” this game will be Mitro’, we’ve no idea of what happened between him and Parker last season but I think Mitro’ will want to show his former gaffer how much of a mistake Parker made?

Our record against Bournemouth isn’t very good with 3 losses and 1 win however I think Mitro and one or two other players may have a point to prove?

Games for the Weekend 27/11

This weekend we’re off to Deepdale to take on Preston North End for a 12:30 kick-off.

Preston North End v Fulham

A 0-0 draw against Derby might not appear to be a good result, I think most of us expected a win, after 7 on the bounce not unreasonably? however with Mitro and Tom both ill and several other (reportedly) playing although suffering the same illness, and Rodak having to self-isolate, it looks as if it was a reasonable result?
Seri, Carvalho and Muniz all came close and on a different day we could have won comfortably, on to Preston.

Preston will be buoyed by their away win at Middlesborough coming after a couple of losses against Cardiff and Forest.

Our record against Preston is very good with 5 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws.

I’m going to assume that both Mitro and Tom will be fit, Rodak should be available, so my team would be…

Games for mid-week 23/10

Another home game under the lights, this time against Derby County

Fulham v Derby County

Gaining the win over Barnsley put us top of the league, I must admit to thinking it would only be for 24 hours or so as Bournemouth played on Sunday however, our next opponents had different ideas beating them 3-2, for once Derby did us a favour?
Once again we spread the goals amongst the team, Mitro, as Gentleman Jim said “to be fair he hasn’t scored for 20 minutes”, Carvalho, Kebano, most improved player?, and if only for Seri’s exceptional pass for Wilson’s goal, for me, was the pick of the bunch.
After 7 wins in a row there’s a lot of talk over on the forum about how this team compares to Jean Tigana’s 2000-01 promotion winning season, its very difficult to pick who’s better however after last season, the improvement in the current squad is quite remarkable.

After another lot of points deductions, I’m not sure how its taken so long for the EFL to arrive at their decision however, Derby will be full of confidence after their win against Bournemouth. As our recent record against Derby is another “close affair” with 4 wins, 5 losses and 6 draws, “historically” this should be a close game although our respective league positions suggest otherwise? but we all know that there are no easy games in the Championship!

my team would be…

Games for the Weekend 20/11…

We welcome Barnsley to the Cottage for a 3 o’clock kick off.

After a struggle at Peterborough, Mitro and Rodak saved the day we managed to grind out our sixth win on the bounce. Over on the forum “Jamie88” and “Dr Know” pointed out that the last time(s) we achieved this type of run was in 2000-01 season, 11 wins, and 1998-99 when we won 8 in a row. During our fabulous 23 match unbeaten run, under Jokanovic, we “only” managed 5 wins in a row.

Mitro has now scored 20 times, to put that in some sort of perspective here’s how he ranks against some the other teams in the Championship…
Mitro – 20
Swansea – 20
Reading – 20
Middlesbrough – 19
Bristol City – 19
Birmingham – 18
Preston NE – 18
Blackpool – 18
Millwall – 17
Peterborough – 17
Cardiff – 16
Derby – 13
Barnsley – 12
Hull – 11

As well as scoring for us Mitro’ continues to bang ’em in for Serbia, he managed a 90th minute winner against Portugal over the weekend knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo from the World Cup.

Mitro’ has 13 goal contributions in 7 games for club and country. 8 goals in 5 starts for Serbia, 20 in 17 for Fulham, better than anyone in Europe to date!

Our record against Barnsley is quite good, for some reason I thought it was bad, I tend to think of Barnsley as a boogy team?, anyhow we’ve 4 wins, 2 losses and 0 draws.

Odoi, having played well in previous games, for some reason struggled against Peterborough’s Dembele , so much so that he was subbed for Tete, I would imagine that Tete would now retain his starting place. Tom added a bit of guile when he was introduced so therefore, assuming no injuries on international duty, my team would be…

Games for the Weekend 06/11

We’re away to Peterborough for a 3 o’clock kickoff this weekend.

A 0-7 away win, and Mitro only scored 1 of them! with 2 goals each for Kebano, Wilson and Muniz. I’m so pleased for Muniz, that must have done his confidence a power of good and shows that he could be a worthy stand in if needed?
Rodak kept another clean sheet, that 20 goals for and 1 against in the last 4 games. After a nervous start Hector grew into the game and looks to be getting back to his form from a couple of seasons ago when he one of the defenders in the Championship.

With Bournemouth suffering their first loss its all getting very interesting at the top, still a very long way to go but I’m looking forward to every game, how different from last season!

Our record against Peterborough, as we’ve only played against them once in the recent past which we won, can’t provide much historical perspective? That being said we’re on a decent run of form WWWWW and Peterborough are doing OK with LWWLD.
We must guard against complacency, remember Coventry!, Peterborough will be looking to make a statement against a club in such free scoring form.

I can’t think of a reason to change a winning squad, therefore my team would be.
