As important as the points are today, I would absolutely love to see Gonzalo get one or two,
Doesn't matter how hard you think he is working or how well he is playing, there comes a time in the season when the media and the supporters study the cold hard facts of goals and assists, and that scrutiny will start after 10 games (at the latest)
My observation so far is this, are we creating enough chances for him in goalscoring positions ?
There hasn't been a discussion yet has there whereby we're all discussing his misses, and "how did he not score that "
So let's get him in goalscoring positions and let's give him the service starting from today
COYSW
agreed hasn't had much chances. Seems to make good runs though just needs to be slotted through
Agree, he has to start performing, we cant carry two low scoring strikers
I'm not worried. He looks quality. I don't remember any "how did he not score that" moments. Fulham look good in attack, it was just the defence that was the issue until Liverpool. We look far more mobile, imaginative and unpredictable when we attack than under Silva, when it was largely just wing it, cross it.
Far too early to be thinking about when we can start criticising a player intentionally. Writing that sentence and realising that's essentially what the Op wants to do, when by their own admission they're 6 games early in doing that too.
We had Chelsea, Liverpool, and European qualified Sunderland in those four games.
For what its worth, i think Garcia has done really well so far and has got into so may good positions and has lost out simply by the rest of the team not spotting the space hes in with, often, a clearer shot at goal.
Have spotted moments in each game we've played so far when he's been in a great position and could've potentially scored from but the player who could've passed to him ended up rushing themselves and taking on the shot, which often was weak or off target.
I dont think it's a question of quality, more about the team getting more aware and familiar of each other so they can see how good he is.
Hopefully he can kick on, but hes already showed his quality with two quick/smart finishes and has looked bright.

Agree, this is why I am less worried by Garcia, you can see the quality and know that when chances come so will goals
Strikers are such an inexact science. Some hit the ground running then, once Premier League coaches work them out, they are a busted flush. Others are slow burners, take a while to get going, but then are unstoppable. Hopefully, Gonzalo is in the latter category.

I would second that!
I agree with the OP. He has been called "the new Raul" by Arbeloa - that's a tall order to follow. Anyone who saw the Wimbledon cup game would have been impressed but since then his league performances are nowhere near (I do notice he is fouled a lot in the PL with zero protection from refs).
Garcia would love to score against United and against two slow defenders albeit good defenders he stands a chance.
Actually, it was Alonso not Arbeloa.
Well, Garcia got some service/chances today, counted 3 good/half chances in 1st half, and he really didn't do anything with those. jmho
We are not looking to play the ball to him in and around the box.
There are numerous times he's in space (not just today) and we shoot.
I'm glad we're shooting more
Garcia was picked out several times, three that I counted, and he couldn't finish/create
Not meant to be critical of his play, I think he's very good, but he is getting some chances, at least in the first half
Garcia had a very poor game today, just been subbed, hopefully he can do better.
Really not sure about him either way at the moment, jury is out.
He doesn't seem to offer much height or pace wise, probably the two.main qualities for a striker in the Prem these days...
and today his 2 or 3 chances showed very poor finishing ability...
He seems to be good at positioning, like an old fashioned fox in the box type, but not sure if that's what we need.
Still, will see....
When are we allowed to be underwhelmed?
From what I've seen so far, Garcia is definitely NO centre-forward!
I think he has ability, but I don't think he's ready at this exact moment. I would start Muniz in the next game
He gets into good areas and the goals will come. Give the boy a chance rather than getting on his back after 4 games.
He's only just arrived, still getting used to a new country and a new team. He has already scored so it's not like he can't. Give him until the new year to judge him.
He looked miles off it today. Muniz would have buried one of those chances
Garcia looked pretty disinterested and/or lethargic today in my opinion. Hopefully he improves.
Gonzalo tried to take on McGuire and lost.
A physical miss match.
Welcome to the EPL young man.
Too early to form a definitive view but impression after a few matches - willing runner still coming to terms with a new team but can't head the ball and doesn't finish.
Muniz looks a better bet. After a long injury last year he looks fitter and hungry.
Suspect we will continue with Garcia with the club and manager having invested heavily in him. Don't think that's sensible.
To be fair, there's been a few times (not today) when he has been open in a good scoring position and Josh has elected to take a questionable shot, rather than feed Garcia the ball.
Very, very shortly, Garcia (or somebody) has to replace the goals and the threat of Raul Jimenez, and at the same time somebody has to replace the goals of Harry Wilson, those two things are non negotiable if we want to stay up,
I said many times on here throughout the summer, including after we signed Garcia, that we needed to sign another striker, and I still standby it, huge gamble to just have Garcia and Muniz as our strike options,
We MUST add more goals to the squad in January, and the work towards that should have already started.
I know I'll get stick for this but he really doesnt pass the eye test for me. I think he's got a footballers brain but is too awkward in his technique. He also doesnt appear very strong for his size and consistently loses any physical battle, particularly in the air.
That said, people who know a lot more about football than me seem to rate him, so let's see. I hope theyre right.
Garcia will turn out to be a great acquisition. It's early days. If he'd cleanly connected to one of the two mis hits in the first half things could have been very different. Small margins. He's different to Muniz but still IMO the better of our two strikers. Let's be honest what did Muniz do today apart from get a an unnecessary booking.

We were on the back foot and Kevin did little to support Muniz.
Never mind I have now seen Sander Berge have a good shot!
I think he might benefit from a few bench appearances. Coming on at 70 mins, when defenders are tiring. He definitely works hard and has talent, but a little game time management would help him adapt.

In your second paragraph, the point I was making was that (before today) he wasn't missing chances because chances weren't being created for him.

I think Garcia is a good player and would have been served better with a manager that used him better.
Not his best game today and he shoots to often from long range with little chance of success. But I think he has the chance to be top class.

Well, he's had two starts and scored two goals. He's also very strong defending corners, set pieces. He's our only other option and, if you take out Raul's penalties, Muniz has a better PL scoring record.

Two starts against lower league opposition. As for scoring in the Premier League, well that's a distant memory. I hope and believe that Arbeloa will persist with Garcia because I think we have a very capable player.

To be truly honest, that is a bit unfair to Muniz. He came on after Iwobi, Bobb, King, and Berge had come off and we shifting to a back five.
Personally, I think we would have the biggest threat by playing the two at the same time.
Not a great performance but still nearly got an assist for Iwobi, and nearly got on the end of an Iwobi though ball which was slightly overhit. Needs a goal
It's not so much he fails to win the high balls, more he doesn't actually challenge for them seriously.
There are many kinds of CF and his two goals so far demonstrate the kind of forward he is.
We seem to be shooting more this season which is welcome but there have been many times a speculative shot should have been a neat pass into Garcia.
We have to play to his strengths.

That's a big reason IMO. King is playing well but sometimes there's an easier pass on than the shot he's taking. At least 3 instances I can think of, but let king do it. He's on fire.
I think I'd like to see him on the right, and give him more space and time on the ball to settle into the PL, he creates the space well but sometimes doesn't realise he has more time and space that he thinks so rushes it.
He's a great poacher, so off the right may give him more space to operate, or with another striker alongside him he wouldn't be the sole focus and the other striker JKA/Muniz could occupy the defenders and he could get in behind.

Disinterested refers to a lack of self-interest or bias. For example, a judge must be disinterested to ensure a fair trial.
Uninterested refers to a lack of curiosity or engagement. For example, a student might be uninterested in a lecture they find boring. "
I think he means the latter.
Probably weren't his best game yesterday. Thought he isolated himself at times. It is likely a case of still adjusting. The issue we might have on the Horizon is he'll need to start finding the net soon and being more involved or pressure will ramp up further considering the next few fixtures and our current position. It was always a 40-60 risk bringing in young lad to spearhead the attack. I agree with Bill Taylor that at times he is not even offering a challenge for a high ball and has been penalised a few times now for just deliberating fouls. There are encouraging signs where he does look to take centre back out of there comfort zone and run the line but until everyone's on board and know each other's strength's and game it will take time but do we have time is the question?
why are we crossing balls in to him? hes either not there or wont win any in the air
Maguire had a relatively easy game against Garcia yesterday. What would have troubled Maguire more would have been passes to Garcia on the ground and into space, to make Maguire turn (and run). Maguire is not the quickest (witness our last minute winner at United) and he can only have got slower since then. But we didn't stretch him enough which was a shame.

Absolutely a huge gamble. On the subject of time where the manager is concerned my take is he will likely get longer than we would normally anticipate if things are going from bad to worst as the DOF has thrown all his eggs into this one basket? That could change if Khan senior looks at the revenue ramifications at risk?
For me Garcia offers very little threat in the box at present.

No need for anyone to panic yet but a review of the situation will almost certainly take place at the next international break (as it will at most clubs)
He will certainly need to be outside of the bottom 3 at the next break otherwise potential candidates will be "sounded" out, which is common practice at any club and is the right thing to do, but hopefully we're clear of the bottom 5 by then and moving in a northerly direction.
Were a few half chances yesterday that he could've done much better with.
However, he's young, it's early days, and the whole team is adjusting.. so can't expect him to hit Mitrovic form in a few months.

I welcome the club taking more shots. A pass through a forest of opposition legs can make a 'neat' pass quite difficult, and oft times ends up quelling the opportunity. If you have the shot, take it!

Yes, because at 3:15 running the length of the pitch to go from centre back to striker to help the team reminds me a bit of Dimitar Berbatov too? Uninterested and immobile. :slap: He is the player at 3:15 next to Robinson.
I actually get the impression he is trying too hard and taking on too much. I think he runs around so much his legs then don't do exactly what they're meant to at the right moment. Strikers need to be so precise. Even when he didn't clear that ball off the line against Palace (he'd ran the length of the pitch and was back before even the midfielders). Someone needs to tell him to do less, but then maybe we are a better unit because of it, even if we don't get the goals.

Totally agree, he's trying too hard to do too many things. He needs guidance from a good coach.
As much as I like Josh King and his ability twice against Liverpool he should have slipped in Garcia who was through but decided to shoot himself which was very selfish. He needs the service too.

I don't know about that, but he surely didn't have his boots laced properly. First half three pretty good chances which he pretty much whiffed at.

Garcia was picked out several times, three that I counted, and he couldn't finish/create
Not meant to be critical of his play, I think he's very good, but he is getting some chances, at least in the first half
And Berge had a shot on target!
