Title: Sessegnon and Cairney, what next ?
Post by: Riversider on February 23, 2019, 03:07:11 PM
I don't really have an opinion on these two, I will say though that I don't think they are any where near as good as some Fulham supporters think they are, but I do think this summer is a critical time for the pair of them, I don't think either of them have been helped by the press last summer, there were reports of Spurs wanting Sess for £50 million and Newcastle wanting Cairney for £25 million, that's a combined valuation of £75 million, from just 7 months ago, what price now ?
So my question is this, which division do you think Sessegnon and Cairney will be playing in next season ?
I think both players will be looking to leave in the summer, but I couldn't hazard a guess as to what level they will be playing at, so what do you think ?

I feel for both of them and believe, with Mitro, that these are our best three players by a mile.
I suspect all will be elsewhere because they deserve better. I think they will all be in the Prem.

I don't see Cairney as a Premier League player ever. Sessegnon may develop into one, but he's not good enough yet. Mitro is good enough, but has to play in a certain system.

Well obviously I disagree, I do think with a proper manager playing a proper system they would all flourish.

What is the proper system and who is the proper manager? Arguably isn't wasn't Slavisa or Slavisa's 4-3-3 possession game because we kept losing games. Cairney just doesn't have the quickness and endurance to make it in the Premier League. He's a quality player, but he's the kind of player the modern game nullifies game in and game out, because of his physical limitations. Sessesgnon is weak like Rainieri says. Ryan has something special about him, but he was way overrated by the punditry and fans last season. Mitro is a stud, but he really needs to play in a 4-4-2 as a target man with a quality partner, something akin to Atletico Madrid's system. Roy Hodgson would love Mitro, I think.

I am with you on the Khans management though. I do think they're good owners in the sense they've committed their resources to Fulham and that they're really good people from what I can tell, but they're a mix bag at best as football club managers. They should let someone else manage the football side of things, I think.

The proper team and formation is as we saw against Brighton in the second half.
That has not been replicated since that game finished.

I think they will both be with us next season now. Neither has done enough to get a transfer to a PL club so I think they will form the basis of our promotion push next year!

This is probably true, but I bet Sessegnon gets some bids and a larger club tries to develop him further.

I agree, but nothing will improve dramatically enough until the owners son is dispatched back to Disney Land, with a flee in his ear.

I have watched most games...Fulham play soooo much better when Cairney is on the field.  He is a top clss player, no doubt. Sess, I cant help but think the manager has destroyed his confidence. His time will come (again) but not as long as we have a dinosaur in charge.

But given that all the hard work revamping the team and getting promoted has been thrown away, why do we think it would be any better next time? And surely the whole point of playing in the Championship is having the ambition to get back to the top level.

The modern game hasn't changed in the centre of the pitch, he's been playing on the wing though. I think this season's results are a poor representation of Cairney's ability, and his individual moments of brilliance is what will bring the clubs calling his name. He is a playmaker, he holds onto the ball and is highly reliable to keep possession. If we don't give him someone to pass to, he has to beat 3-4 players at a time, which happened a couple times last night.

I think the losing season effect is very much on all our players right now, and fans' perception on them as well. If you isolate these players, you can see the value they bring to a team that has their gameplan together. Unfortunately, Fulham's managers haven't had a well executed, consistent, plan this season.

Nero,  he has been selected. Played 2 or 3 then he got injured which affected both Fulham and Scotland before xmas.  However, Scotland also have a dinosaur manager who played TC......on the wing  :031:

Cairney is a Prem quality player when played in position. He is not a wide player as our dumb manager seems to think.
Sess clearly has tremendous potential and given the right coaching etc I think he is zprem potential.

Unfortunately, like the good teams in the championship and every team (bar Brighton for a half) in the premiership, Cairney will not be given the time he needs to dictate games. Give him time and he is a great player but he's quite easy to nullify for good teams. Remember, many games in championship he was very quiet. fortunatley, we had other weapons

Cairney is a pure flair player, with zero defensive capabilities. Surround him with battlers and he can pick out a pass keep the ball and helps the team tick.
Expect him to get stuck in and graft and you are wasting your time.
Last night second half I must have been watching a different game to some on here. "fantastic feet" Carragher commented as he skipped past a couple of west ham players. Im sure he did that twice. Very rarely gave the ball away and threaded a few passes through for goal scoring chances.
If he had a bit of steel he would be at a top 6 club.
Im not surprised CR hasn't picked him much ,but now he must surely realise its better to have him on the pitch for what he can offer as opposed to off the pitch for what he cant.

You know that thing that Cairney does when he tries something and loses the ball and then seems to shrug and sulk for about 30 secs. As fans, I think we take this as not caring but I belive its just in his football dna. Its probably what he has done as a flair player since a kid. He cant stop himself, he's just gutted he's lost the ball.

Take Snodgrass for example. Skill wise, he's not in the same class as Cairney but he'll end up having what will be considered a better career than TC because ultimately, he'll fight to make things happen and if he loses the ball, will fight to get it back.

Sad to say but Snodgrass (who I think is a top championship/lower premier player) would be far more useful to us than TC is right now.

It might not sound it but I'm a major TC fan

Im wondering why Cairney cant see this and have a go? maybe he thinks he has fragile legs and is only one bad tackle away from the scrapheap

Unless Sess is rescued from the current nightmare his stock will fall quite dramatically. I forced myself to watch the motd highlights last night and he looked a shadow of the player he was. Of course part of that shadow was caused by having to mark 6'7 centre backs at set plays. How on earth did that happen?

For what TC lacks in outright pace he more than makes up for with his quickness of thought, all round awareness and calmness in possession.

There are plenty of examples of players in the top division who are not blessed with pace but are still exceptional.

Seems that the majority on here are struggling with an opinion and rather tellingly hardly anyone is suggesting that their short term future is in The Premier League.

:plus one:

I don't see why either would leave for anything other than a starting position for a premiere league squad...unless a lot of $$$ is offered, and I don't see why any premiere league team would offer either of them a lot of $$$.   Yes, Sess is still young...but he's going to need starter minutes to improve.  Whose going to give him that?

Ryan and Tom should be on Fulham's squad next season and I'll be happy to see it.  Both should also start next season.

I think the losing season effect is very much on all our players right now, and fans' perception on them as well. If you isolate these players, you can see the value they bring to a team that has their gameplan together. Unfortunately, Fulham's managers haven't had a well executed, consistent, plan this season.

Yes, he's a playmaker. That's my exact point. Playmakers don't make teams anymore, unless they are quick, have endurance, and can therefore contribute a high work rate. Slowish playmakers get nullified by pressing and then get galloped by on defense because their low work rate creates holes for the other team to penetrate time and again.

#

For what TC lacks in outright pace he more than makes up for with his quickness of thought, all round awareness and calmness in possession.

There are plenty of examples of players in the top division who are not blessed with pace but are still exceptional.

Actually, no there aren't many of these players playing top flight football now, if any. Cariney is a Scottish version of Juan Roman Riquelme. No top team will play a player like that any more. They're too easy to defend and they open up space for the opposition's attack. They usually make their team a one man team... if he's off, say good night.

Both Cairney and Sess. will be away in the summer to a premier league club which will be sad for us but good for the players.
Just hope we are capable of negotiating good fees for them. Of course we will not be able to replace them with players of quality so whatever the fee it is unlikely the money will be put to good use.

Sess and his brother are very close so where one goes the other will follow.
I can see both brothers, Mitro, and Tom Cairney leaving and why should they stay with the morale in the club as it is?
It will be a slow hard job for a new manager to build up our fortunes just as long as the Khans choose the right person!

I cant see Cairney going to a current prem club. Surely they have seen his lack of defensive qualities and know that its too much of a luxury

So its either to a newly promoted team to the prem or a newly relegated team in the championship.

But I don't reckon he will leave.

I think Sess might leave to a top 6 club but then loaned back for a season with an option to recall if he starts pulling up trees.

The value of any player is only what someone is prepared to pay for them, I wouldn't think any club is prepared to pay the amounts the media were suggesting at the end of last season.
Most clubs are prepared to gamble big money on a good and proven striker, I think Mitrovic will command a large fee with anyone of the top six being prepared to sink £25m for him just as a back up striker.
Sess is so young and the big clubs will look upon him as an investment for the future and again we should expect £25m.

Cairney is a possible playmaker for the clubs in the bottom half of the table, I thought Newcastle were interested and they may put their hands in their pockets for £10m but I would expect us to hold out for more.

We should expect to bring in £60m for our three best players but the more important question is how wisely will we spend the income. Our record on buying players is not at all good.

We can all disagree and have different opinions. I am not sure what you are seeing but when Tom comes central into his natural position, and when sess is given freedom to express himseld, these guys are more than capable and have shown it. I never go with the chattering classI have seen how good they both are all season (save or when Tom was recovering from injury) and do hope that with Parker in charge a new freedom is seen and you to will change your views.

What they cannot be in the Prem is outstanding in the way they were in the Chapionship because there are quite so many other great players and teams.

Give them the benifit of the doubt for a game or two and see how you feel then.

Cairney is too one footed to make that big an impact on the premiership. Yes he's good but he's similar to Darren Huckerby was. Class in the championship and pony in the premiership. Keep him around for next season for sure.
Sess is still so young. Give him time.

Our own Danny Murphy had no pace but comfortable on the ball and could pick a pass .
Cairney has the added skill of being to go past players.

I do not feel it needs fan pressure, they should both play. Scott Parker I hope will make right decision, if he does not then he obviously has his reasons.
Sess has been playing under a cloud, but now I hope he will be in better shape mentally.
As for Tom, being played out of position has been detrimental to his game.
So the way they have been treated recently has brought the worst out of them.
Please remember they amongst others had a huge roll to play getting us promoted last season. Culminating with their little cameo at Wembley which turned out to be Toms winning goal, and Scott was in attendance to see it.
Always remember your roots. Because since that marvellous day at Wembley last year, TK has had his sticky fingers in the Recruitment pot, and brought in expensive recruits who were either unsuitable, uninterested, physically and mentally weak, with no desire, and were clearly quality wise not good enough. Not forgetting swamping the dressing room with loan players, not very bright when it comes to building team spirit, and of course the players who fought to get us into the Premier League were edged out fairly quickly to justify playing the expensive new recruits.
Plus two managers lost their jobs in the months to follow.
Do not get me wrong, not all new recruits were failures.
But overall the Recruitment Unit did to Fulham what the Charge of the Light Brigade did to Army Recruitment.
So always remember your roots.

It's a fact though that neither Jokanovic or Ranieri have fancied Cairney this season, that must tell us something, under Jokanovic Cairney had his mystery injury that was baffling sport science leading to Jokanovic to say "Sometimes you don't have to be 100% physically fit to play but you do have to be 100% mentally strong"
People forget that Cairney wasn't flavour of the month with Jokanovic but are quick to criticise Ranieri because he was critical of Cairney,
For my take Tom is a great player when we have got the ball but is a passenger when the opposition have got the ball and you can't carry passengers at this level and it seems Jokanovic and Ranieri would agree with that.

I think the thing with Cairney is Slav built a team around his weak points in the championship to cover for him. He never really did anything great before he joined us, Slav as with other players he has coached brought the best out of him, I think he is good on the ball when he has time but in the premier league you are not given that luxury. I honestly cannot see a PL club coming in for him.

If Sess leaves I think it will be with his brother and they will go to s good premiership club who will see the money as an investment in the future.
If TC goes I think it will be to a footballing mid table prem club, WHU for example.

You may be right but whilst I understand that 16 year old boys would want to stay together at a club they have been at since 8 years old, I just cant see that being the case when they are men. Stephen's next decision needs to be based on whats best for his career, not hanging onto his brother's coat tails.

Got a feeling Stephen may be in squad tomorrow
