Swansea bid for Stockdale
Rodgers wants shot-stopper as replacement for De Vries

Sky Sports News understands that Swansea have bid for Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale.

The Premier League new-boys are attempting to reinforce their squad ahead of the new season and have already brought in striker Danny Graham and defender Steven Caulker.

Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna and Barcelona striker Jonathan Soriano are also targets, but Stockdale has emerged as another man on Brendan Rodgers' wanted list.

Dorus De Vries was first choice at the Liberty Stadium and started 46 matches as promotion to the Premier League was earned via the Championship play-offs.

However, the Dutchman has switched to Wolves and Stockdale would provide a replacement and may relish a fresh opportunity after being restricted to a role as back-up to Mark Schwarzer at Fulham.
Option

Swansea have consequently decided to test the resolve of their new top-flight rivals by making an offer for the former Darlington player.

Stockdale made just seven appearances last season, but has still been included in England squads in the past after being called up as cover by Fabio Capello.
Fulham boss Martin Jol said at the end of June that he would not sell the 25-year-old and would instead aim to find a loan option.

Stockdale joined Fulham in 2008 from Darlington and has already undertaken temporary spells at Rotherham, Leicester and Plymouth.

The shot-stopper may therefore welcome the chance of a permanent move elsewhere and could put pressure on Jol.

Schwarzer: Still a big game
Mark Schwarzer insists Fulham won't take the Europa League clash with NSI Runavik lightly, saying: "It's still a big European game."

The Australia international was barely tested in the first qualifying round first leg at Craven Cottage and the Whites head to the Faroe Islands for Thursday's tie boasting a 3-0 advantage.

Fulham manager Martin Jol and skipper Danny Murphy both admitted after the game their passage to the second round was all but secure, but Schwarzer insists they will give NSI the utmost respect.

"It's a European game. Whether it's the first round, the fourth, or the fifth, it's still a big game," he told the club's official website.

"Obviously the opposition is one that people will look at and think 'it's a nothing game', but for us it's important to win the game.

"All you have to do is think about what would happen if you lose the game, that's enough motivation for anyone.

"It's still very early in the competition and this time we're in round one, so we've got to do it like we did last time and take every round as it comes.

"As long as we can maintain our good performances in the Premier League, as well as in Europe, everyone will be happy.

"I think the teams that start off early do really well at the start of the season - let's just wait and see.

"Let's hope we get the balance right between work and rest. Hopefully we can have a very good season again."

Murphy, Damien Duff and Andy Johnson netted in the first leg last week, providing the ideal start to Martin Jol's reign.

The Dutchman replaced Mark Hughes as the west London club's manager last month and Schwarzer says he has been impressed by what he has seen in a short space of time.

"He's been good, he's obviously got a lot of experience in the game and he's held some very big coaching positions over the last couple of years," he added.

"He's a big personality, he's slotted in very easily and the players have responded really well. He has the utmost respect from all the players."

Albion reignite interest in AJ
West Brom have switched their attention back to Fulham striker Andrew Johnson after Reading revealed they want £10million for Shane Long.

The Royals are still licking their wounds following their Championship play-off final defeat to Swansea last season - but are keen to hang on to star men Long and defender Matt Mills, or get top value for them if they do move on.

Albion are believed to have made an enquiry regarding the availability of Long, who netted 26 goals for Brian McDermott's men last season.

But the Royals' valuation of the 24-year-old, who joined Reading from Cork City alongside Kevin Doyle for a nominal fee back in 2005, has ruled the Baggies out of the running.

Everton, Wolves and Newcastle have also been monitoring Long's situation - but it is German giants Bayern Munich who appear to be most likely to capture his signature, and they are reportedly ready to test Reading's resolve with a £7.5million opening bid.

That is still way out of Albion's reach, with the record signing at The Hawthorns still Borja Valero, who was recruited by Tony Mowbray for £4.7million in 2008 but proved to be a massive flop in England.

So manager Roy Hodgson has reignited his interest in Fulham frontman Johnson, with an opening offer of £3million likely to land on Martin Jol's desk.

It could be a case of friends reunited at The Hawthorns in the next week as Zoltan Gera is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Baggies, who are also hoping that David Vaughan chooses them over Sunderland, with a decision from the Blackpool star expected on Wednesday.

SWANSEA LEAD FOR DAVID STOCKDALE

SWANSEA are front-runners in the race to sign Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale.

David Stockdale, who was called into the England squad last season, is available on loan as Mark Schwarzer is first choice for boss Martin Jol.

Jol will not sell Stockdale but is willing to loan him out for a season, along with other young talent at the club.

He said: "I feel if you are a young player you should play and there's a few young players here. So I feel we have to find opportunities for them to play, and that is what I did in Germany, Holland and in England before.

"If you have a lot of youngsters who are probably not involved every week, I think you have to find a situation where they can play every week.

"So there will be a couple of players going out on loan.

"Hopefully I can send out two or three players to Holland because that's a very good competition to play in for young players."

David Stockdale set to join Swans

SWANSEA CITY last night launched a bid to land Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale as boss Brendan Rodgers stepped up his attempts to find a new No.1.

Swans chief Rodgers is keen on signing impressive shot-stopper Stockdale as a ready-made replacement for Dorus de Vries, who quit the Liberty to join Wolves last month.

And reports claimed last night he had tabled a formal offer for the 25-year-old England call-up.

A Swansea spokesman last night confirmed the approach, stating: "We have made an enquiry for David Stockdale and are in discussions with Fulham, but he is only one of a number of goalkeeping options we are looking at."

Although Rodgers is eager to make Stockdale a permanent addition to the Swansea ranks, Fulham are likely to only sanction a loan switch to South Wales in time for the new Premier League campaign.

Jol is happy for 25-year Stockdale – drafted into the England squad by Fabio Capello last season – to head out to gain experience having already told experienced Aussie Mark Schwarzer he will be the Londoner's No.1 for the year ahead.

But former Spurs chief Jol has previously ruled out selling the highly-rated 6ft 3ins keeper – and is understood to want to make sure he has goalkeeping cover at Craven Cottage before allowing Stockdale to leave.

Swansea's chances of a loan deal could be boosted with the news Jol is currently running the rule over Hungarian trialist Csaba Somogyi.

Swans sources were stressing last night Stockdale is just one of a number of possibilities for Rodgers as he looks to fill the gloves of de Vries after the end of the 30-year-old's four-year spell with the club.

But he will be encouraged by Jol's willingness to let Stockdale get a greater taste of the top flight, although the former Ajax boss did stress he would only give his blessing to the deal if there was a promise of regular action.

"Mark Schwarzer is a great goalkeeper, one of the best I've seen, the No. 1," said Jol, whose club are already back playing after their early entrance in the Europa League.

"So, the only discussion we've got with the player is should he play, should he go on loan somewhere, or do you want to keep him as a No. 2?

"If you make a decision to put him on loan then you need another goalkeeper, a No. 2 at the club.

"I won't sell him, we'll never sell him, because I think his future is bright.

"But the only thing is, if you make the decision to play him every week, we need a club which will promise me he will play every week.

"I feel if you are a young player you should play and there's a few young players here.

"If you have a lot of youngsters who are probably not involved every week, I think you have to find a situation where they can play every week."

Stockdale made just 10 appearances for Fulham last term because of 38-year-old Schwarzer's presence, despite winning rave reviews for his performances and catching the eye of Capello.

And he would certainly tick a box for Rodgers as he continues to try and bolster his squad ahead of the club's historic Premier League debut.

Rodgers will be back at the Liberty Stadium later this week but is already pushing ahead with transfer plans, although chairman Huw Jenkins has admitted attempts to land Barcelona youngster Jonathan Soriano have ended because of a disagreement over terms.

A contract extension for Andrea Orlandi was confirmed yesterday, while a deal to bring in Marcos Senna could yet be resurrected despite Rodgers' own admission that the contract demands of the former Spain star could be too rich for the Swans, the Euro 2008 winning midfielder reportedly ready to make a definitive decision on his future by this weekend with a one-year option to stay at Villareal on the table.

Rodgers has said he would like all new faces in as quickly as possible, but knows the club's late end-of-season involvement in the play-offs are likely to mean them working right up to the end of the summer transfer window.

Swansea begin their top-flight campaign at Manchester City on August 13, but have begun to firm-up their pre-season plans by announcing a friendly with Celtic.

The SPL giants – linked with a move for Wales star Craig Bellamy – will head to the Liberty on August 3 where ex-Cardiff City pair Joe Ledley and Gorseinon-born Adam Matthews will figure for Neil Lennon's Hoops.

Swansea begin their summer fixtures with two games against Neath and Port Talbot Town on July 16 and will conclude with a visit from La Liga outfit Real Betis on August 6.

Murphy taking no chances
Skipper warns Cottagers to be careful in Torshavn

Captain Danny Murphy insists Fulham will take nothing for granted when they bid to finish off Faroese minnows NSI Runavik in the Europa League on Thursday night.

New boss Martin Jol started life at Craven Cottage on a high note last week when his side beat Runavik 3-0 in the first leg of their first qualifying round clash.

However Murphy, who netted from the spot on that occasion, maintains the squad cannot think the job is already done as their build-up to the new domestic campaign continues in the unlikely surroundings of Torshavn.

"It is a difficult one at 3-0. If it was five it would probably be easier. I would expect one or two of the young lads to play maybe," Murphy told the club's official website.

Spine

"Of course you need the spine of the team, but when you play away it could be a dodgy pitch and it only takes one mistake and you can be a goal down after 10 minutes.

"You have to be careful, but let's be honest, whatever team we play we should be comfortable with a 3-0 lead.

"As the game went on at the Cottage we should have scored more goals and wrapped it up."

Fulham were handed the opportunity to compete in Europe via Uefa's Fair Play League, but still have a long road ahead before they can contemplate tackling the group stages.

Having reached the 2010 Europa League final under Roy Hodgson, Murphy would welcome another shot and believes progression through the qualifiers should see Jol's men hit the ground running for their opening Premier League game against Aston Villa.
"It is a positive that we have got the opportunity to play in Europe again," said the former Liverpool,Charlton and Tottenham midfielder.

Problems

"Not everybody is used to doing it so it's going to be a test, but you've got to look at the positives, and the run of two years ago will live long in the memory of everybody associated with Fulham, so why not go on a good run again?

"In July you're playing friendly matches anyway, trying to get fit, so if anything we will be ahead of schedule.

"We might have some tired legs at the end of the season, but then it's down to the manager to rotate players.

"The problems come if you're trying to fight a relegation battle whilst playing European games. Let's hope we're not in that position.

"The squad is as healthy as it's ever been in terms of quality. We are lacking a few numbers and I am sure that will be addressed."

Fulham eye Serie A star

Fulham are reportedly interested in Roma's John Arne Riise as a replacement for Carlos Salcido.
Salcido is keen to return to Mexico after failing to settle in England, despite impressing on the pitch, and reports in Italy suggest that Riise is wanted by Fulham boss Martin Jol.

Riise has just one year left on his deal with Roma and is expected to move on this summer, with the Norway international keen to move back to the Premier League.

If Fulham do secure a deal for the former Liverpool man Riise will link up with his brother Bjorn Helge at Craven Cottage.

SCHWARZER KEEPING FOCUSED

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer admits the prospect of bowing out of the Europa League at the first hurdle will be enough to ensure the Cottagers take this week's tie against Faroese minnows NSI Runavik seriously.

Cottagers chief hints at keeper loan exit

Martin Jol has ruled out selling Fulham keeper David Stockdale, but he could loan him to interested Premier League new boys Swansea.

The Cottagers chief has spoken out on the future of the 25-year-old shot-stopper after the Swans confirmed reports on Tuesday that they were interested in taking the former Darlington man to the Liberty Stadium as a replacement for Dorus De Vries.

"We have made an enquiry for David Stockdale and are in discussions with Fulham, but he is only one of a number of goalkeeping options we are looking at," said a spokesman for the South Wales outfit.

Jol, who took over from Mark Hughes as boss at Craven Cottage last month, has stated that Stockdale is one player that he has no plans to sell on a permanent basis given that he has already forced his way into England coach Fabio Capello's squad.

But, with veteran Mark Schwarzer his number one keeper for the new season and Hungarian trialist Csaba Somogyi possibly coming in, Jol could afford to let Stockdale get some regular first-team experience in the Premier League with the Swans which would suit both clubs.

Jol said: "Mark Schwarzer is a great goalkeeper, one of the best I've seen, the No. 1.

"So, the only discussion we've got with the player is should he play, should he go on loan somewhere, or do you want to keep him as a No. 2?

Jermain Defoe and Jermaine Jenas targeted by Fulham for double transfer
New Fulham manager Martin Jol is planning a double swoop on former club Tottenham to buy Jermain Defoe and Jermaine Jenas.

The 55-year-old, who took over at Craven Cottage in June following Mark Hughes' departure, is thought to be eyeing up his old club as he looks to strengthen Fulham's squad.

Defoe and Jenas are believed to be Jol's top targets this summer, with Fulham in need of an extra striker amid their battle to keep hold of forward Clint Dempsey.

The impending exit of midfielder Zoltan Gera could also see another gap for Jol to plug - hence the interest in out-of-favour Jenas.

Defore has made no secret of his discontent at White Hart Lane, where he has failed to get back into Harry Redknapp's first-team on a regular basis after struggling for fitness at the beginning of the season.

He admitted in May that he was finding things 'difficult', saying: 'For me the main thing is playing football and if I am not playing football then I am not happy.'

Along with Fulham, Newcastle and Everton are also possible contenders for the England striker's signature.

Jol has the budget to improve his squad - just days after joining, he told the press that he and chairman Mohamed Al Fayed 'had a good conversation about players and where we can try to strengthen and get one or two quality players'.

Albion set to switch back for AJ

Roy Hodgson could return to Fulham with a bid for striker Andrew Johnson after West Brom were priced out of a swoop for Shane Long.

Championship side Reading have slapped a £10million price-tag on the head of their influential Republic of Ireland international striker, who scored 26 goals for Brian McDermott's men as they reached the play-off final at Wembley last season.

Following that defeat to Swansea, 24-year-old Long and defender Matt Mills have been heavily linked with moves away, but the Royals are determined to keep them to help launch a fresh promotion push next term.

Therefore, with Albion chief Hodgson unable to match Reading's valuation for Long, he is set to look elsewhere and that could see him go back to his former club Fulham to try and entice former England international hitman, Johnson, to the Hawthorns.

An offer of £3million is reportedly in the pipeline and if current Cottagers boss Martin Jol accepts it, then Hodgson could have two of his former Craven Cottage squad men back with him in the Midlands for the new season as Zoltan Gera is also close to completing a free transfer move to the Baggies.

Fulham captain Danny Murphy gears up for NSI Runavik clash

DANNY Murphy and his Fulham team-mates won't consider searching for the Faroes Islands nightlife when they get there later today – because there is no night.

At this time of the year, a semi dusk pervades the far Northern Hemisphere for only two hours a day, and the midfielder joked he and the others would be easy prey for any paparazzi with a long lens.

He said: "They've obviously got no nightclubs – and if there is we'll be seen going in."

Murphy wants to get in and get out as quickly as possible while making sure there is no amazing upset after the Whites won the opening leg against NSI Runavik 3-0.

He added: "There might be a dodgy pitch or whatever, but we should be comfortable. After all they're not very good – and I'm sure he (boss Martin Jol) is having a think who he needs to take.

"It's a difficult one at 3-0. If it was five it would probably be easier. I would expect one or two of the young lads to play maybe."

Swans target new shot-stopper
Stockdale and Gilks reported to be on Rodgers' wish list

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed that the club are working hard to bring in a new goalkeeper.

The Swans secured promotion into the Premier League last season with Dutch shot-stopper Dorus de Vries providing their last line of defence.

He has opted to move on this summer, penning a three-year contract with Wolves.

That has left Brendan Rodgers short on options, with last season's back-up Yves Ma-Kalambay now available as a free agent.

Swansea are hoping to tie him down on fresh terms, but appreciate that they need to bring in at least one more senior keeper.

Options

"There are a few options we are looking at," Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post.

"Goalkeeper is obviously a position we need to look at, and talks are ongoing. Hopefully something will develop in the next few days."

Reports suggest Fulham's David Stockdale tops Rodgers' wish list, with the Cottagers having admitted that they would be willing to let the England squad member leave on loan.

Blackpool's Matt Gilks is also believed to be a target, with the Scotland international having allowed his contract at Bloomfield Road to run down.

FOOTBALL - SWANS IN STOCKDALE TALKS AS THEY ANNOUNCE A HUGE PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

SWANSEA CITY are in discussions with Fulham about the possibility of signing goalkeeper David Stockdale. And they have also announced a massive pre-season friendly at the Liberty Stadium against one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Stockdale was signed from Darlington in 2008, but has had limited opportunities with the Craven Cottage side.

The 25year-old has spent time on loan at Leicester and Plymouth, and his last of his 13 appearances for Fulham was in the 4-0 F.A. cup win over Tottenham.

The Swans are in need of a goalkeeper since the departure of Dorus de Vries to Wolves, but so far no formal bid has been made by them.

But their big announcement is a pre-season friendly against Scottish giants Celtic in the build-up to the club's opening game in the Premier League.

The Swans will welcome Neil Lennon's side to the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday, August 3, and they could include former Cardiff City players Joe Ledley and Adam Matthews.

Cottagers consider keeper deal

"If you make a decision to put him on loan then you need another goalkeeper, a No. 2 at the club.

"I won't sell him, we'll never sell him, because I think his future is bright.

"But the only thing is, if you make the decision to play him every week, we need a club which will promise me he will play every week."

NSI Runavik v Fulham Preview: Danny Murphy Looking for Winning Habit

EUROPA LEAGUE QUALIFYING: SVANGASKARD STADIUM, THURSDAY JULY 7, 2011. KICK-OFF:1945 BST

Martin Jol got his Fulham tenure off to a successful start when his team won 3-0 in the first leg, and anything less than another victory in the return fixture will be considered a shock.

If the rest of the Europa League campaign goes like this, the Dutchman will be happy. His team are easing back to action and getting into the habit of winning.

There is also an element of team bonding by travelling into the unknown for many players and boarding the plane to the Faroe Islands to play NSI.

Jol picked a strong line-up in the first leg so he is clearly serious about using the competition to assess his squad and get them as fit as possible heading into the Premier League season.

The players can also use the match as a chance to impress the Dutchman, with players such as Stephen Kelly looking on his way out of the club before the new appointment to take over from Mark Hughes.

There will be just another six matches before the group stages if Fulham protect their lead. Jol will be happy about the early start to the season should those matches end in victory.

Key Match-up: Christian Hogni Jacobsen v Danny Murphy: Jacobsen is an attacking player but started in central midfield in the first leg. He will be attempting to drag NSI back into the tie with his creativity. Murphy, the Fulham captain, will be looking to control the central area of the pitch and pass with the intelligence he consistently shows.

Form Guide: Fulham only have the first leg as a yardstick of their form. NSI are fourth in their domestic league and drew against B71 Sandoy before this tie.

Odds: NSI 18/1, Fulham 1/12, Draw 13/2

FULHAM:
Fulham captain Murphy remains wary of an embarrassing defeat, despite the scoreline from the first leg.

"It's a difficult one at 3-0," Murphy told fulhamfc.com. "If it was five it would probably be easier. I would expect one or two of the young lads to play maybe. Of course you need the spine of the team but when you play away it could be a dodgy pitch and it only takes one mistake and you can be a goal down after ten minutes.

"You have to be careful, but let's be honest, whatever team we play we should be comfortable with a three-nil lead. As the game went on at the Cottage we should have scored more goals and wrapped it up.

"It will be my first trip to the Faroe Islands and another one to tick off the list. I've been to a few countries in my time."

Despite the early start to the season, Murphy is pleased to be involved in the competition.

"It's a positive that we've got the opportunity to play in Europe again," he added. "Not everybody is used to doing it so it's going to be a test, but you've got to look at the positives, and the run of two years ago will live long in the memory of everybody associated with Fulham Football Club, so why not go on a good run again?

"In July you're playing friendly matches anyway, trying to get fit, so if anything we'll be ahead of schedule. We might have some tired legs at the end of the season but then it's down to the Manager to rotate players.

"Last time we did it we put ourselves in a safe position fairly early on and we were never in any trouble. The problems come if you're trying to fight a relegation battle whilst playing European games.

"Let's hope we're not in that position. The squad is as healthy as it's ever been in terms of quality. We are lacking a few numbers and I'm sure that will be addressed."

Jol is assessing his squad, but players are also sizing up their third manager in as many seasons.

Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer said: "He's [Jol] been good, he's obviously got a lot of experience in the game and he's held some very big coaching positions over the last couple of years. He's a big personality, he's slotted in very easily and the players have responded really well. He has the utmost respect from all the players."

Strategy: Fulham will be looking to control the pace of the game and play possession football. Jol has insisted there will be an emphasis on attacking when he is in charge.

Injury Update: Clint Dempsey and Carlos Salcido are on international duty, at the Copa America in Argentina, while Moussa Dembele is out with an ankle injury.

NSI RUNAVIK:
Pauli Poulsen, the NSI coach, admits it is the biggest game many of players have been involved in and he is hoping their will seize their chance to impress.

"Of course the players will be thinking about this, because it is by far the biggest match many have experienced," he said.

Tottenham Pair Set for Move to West London

Tottenham Striker Jermain Defoe is set for a sensational move across London to Fulham, according to reports in The Metro.

It is believed that new Fulham manager Martin Jol is keen to acquire the services of Jermain Defoe as well as his Spurs team mate Jermaine Jenas.

Since taking over the managers role at Craven Cottage, Jol has been linked with a number of players from his former club including, Robbie Keane and David Bentley.

However it is thought that Jol now has Defoe and Jenas on top of his summer transfer wish list.

Both players have fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane last season, with both struggling to cement regular places in the first team.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has also been told by chairman Daniel Levy that in order to bring in players over the summer he will need to sell first, and Redknapp is looking to sell his fringe players and both Defoe and Jenas could be heading for the exit door to raise cash.

Former Ajax manager, Jol worked with both Defoe and Jenas whilst he was in charge at White Hart Lane between 2004-2007.

He feels both players would be a welcomed edition to the squad as Fulham look to balance both Premier League and Europa League football next season.

Last season Defoe made 30 appearances for Spurs last season and scored nine goals in all competitions whilst Jenas made 28 appearances in all competitions.

Former Liverpool star to sign for Fulham?

John Arne Riise could be back in the Premier League this summer as reports suggest Fulham are lining up a bid for the former Liverpool defender.

Sky Sports suggests that new Fulham manager Martin Jol is in the market for a new left-back as the current occupier, Mexican Carlos Salcido, is expected to leave Craven Cottage due to homesickness.

It was originally thought that Jol would make a move to bring former player and Liverpool flop Paul Konchesky back to Fulham, but it seems that interest in Konchesky has cooled and Jol is looking abroad for a suitable replacement.

Riise is in the last year of his contract at Serie A club AS Roma and it is rumoured that they would rather cash in on him now rather than seeing him leave next year on a free transfer.

New Roma coach Luis Enrique has already lined up a replacement for Riise having made a move for Sporting Gijon's Jose Angel, a move which would only strengthen Jol's hopes of capturing a defender who was well established in the Premier League through his seven years at Liverpool.

Faroe Islands: A Fan's View

It's fair to say that when the Whites were drawn to face NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands few fans knew little about our First Qualifying Round opponents. Fortunately Georg Festetics, one of Fulham's newest fans did, and here's his low-down of what to expect...

"The great thing about playing in Europe is that it gives you the chance to see parts of the world that you otherwise might not – especially in these early rounds.

I do a lot of travelling through my job as well, and one of the places that I have become familiar with is the Faroe Islands, so I like to think that I know what's in store for Martin Jol's team.

A few of the Runavik squad are internationals, while a few have played in various league across the globe and we shouldn't forget that this is their fourth consecutive year of European football - although they are yet to progress from the First Qualifying Round.

Fulham's trip will be very interesting as the Faroe Islands can be a tough place to go – just ask Aaron Hughes and Chris Baird who were part of the Northern Ireland team that were held to a memorable 1-1 draw at the Svangaskard Stadium.

It may look like the most picturesque stadium in Europe, but when those winds cut in from the sea there is nowhere to hide. It's not the most forgiving of places.

The Faroe Islands offer the most impressive scenery and landscapes I have ever seen, but at the same time it has the most unpredictable weather. It's constantly changing – I was there not too long ago and saw snow, rain, wind and sun all in one day! So for those fans who are travelling, take clothes for all occasions.

The total area is approximately 1,400 square kilometers with a 2010 population of almost 50,000. Seventeen of the 18 islands are inhabited, some only reachable by helicopter (three days a week, provided by Atlantic Airways) or ferries (daily).

What else should the fans expect? Well, the food is highly sophisticated and expensive (everything from the fish and lamb meat is imported), and the women highly attractive!

The people also really love their football, and there is a pitch in every village that you will see. The First and Second Divisions have 10 teams each and they play a regular cup and super cup (although they rest between November and March because of the weather).

Boys and girls play from the earliest age, and I'm yet to see a tennis court or ice hockey field – it really is all about football up there.

Like their Scandinavian neighbours they do of course, love the Premier League, so don't be surprised to see a lot of Liverpool and Manchester United shirts. Fulham, being one of the most traditional teams are very much respected over there and they will know all about the Whites as they do most English teams.

For me, this is the perfect place for the team's second UEFA Europa League adventure to begin – it will certainly be one of the most interesting places fans will have travelled to.

Like the rest of the supporters, I am very much looking forward to another European adventure. I'm originally from Austria, and having moved to London only a few years ago it didn't take long for me to take this club to my heart.

The first game I saw at Craven Cottage was the 3-0 defeat of FK Vetra Third Qualifying Round last time around and from that night I was hooked. In fact, I watched every home game in the UEFA Europa League and went to the game in Roma and both the Semi-Final and Final in Hamburg.

I booked my ticket to the Faroe Islands when this fixture was announced and I can't wait to get out there. It look sets to be another exciting season and having already enjoyed the wonderful European campaign of the 2009/10 season it would be great to add to those very special memories.

I'm sure Martin Jol and the boys will be fit and hungry for the challenge, so I can see no reason why we can't go all the way to Bucharest?!"

Georg Festetics

Chivas to offer Salcido escape route from Fulham

Chivas Guadalajara want to offer Fulham left-back Carlos Salcido a route home to Mexico.

Fulham are increasingly aware of Salcido's homesickness in London and Martin Jol is said to be willing to listen to offers for the 31-year-old, with the Dutchman in the market for a new left-back.

Salcido immediately impressed at Craven Cottage following his arrival from PSV last summer but as time wore on last season, his form dipped and rumours of unrest started to emerge.

The defender was also the victim of a break-in at his London home, adding to his family's wishes to return to their South American home.

The Mexico international began his career with Chivas and the club are keen on taking him back to his home country.

Salcido's contract at Fulham expires in 2013 and Chivas are willing to offer around £1m to give him the chance to return home.

Game Preview - NSI Runavik (a)

Those making the arduous trip to one of Europe's more far reaching, secluded, Northern entities tomorrow may not have a compelling spectacle at hand, but will certainly be doused with entertainment in the form of Runavik goalkeeper Andras Gango, whom, in the first leg, spent more time on the floor in a makeshift foetal position then he did standing up.

The Faroe Islands, for Danny Murphy at least, is a place rarely visited by footballers these days; especially not in early July. And, for those players that consider a trip north cushioned by a fanciful 3-0 lead as a lesser holiday, Mark Schwarzer has been quick to quell any potential complacency: "All you have to do is think about what would happen if you lose the game, that's enough motivation for anyone," the Australian stated to fulhamfc.com.

A 3-0 head start is perhaps more flattering for the travelling Fulham side than their first leg performance suggested. At some points, the match provided such dire viewing that the Hammersmith End could be heard to urge opposition players to shoot. They didn't, of course, and that is partly why even the most lackadaisical and half-hearted performance should see us comfortably progress to the next qualifying round tomorrow evening. The Craven Cottage tie, whilst painstaking at times, was only a fair reflection on a Fulham side not-so-freshly returning from a distinctly shortened Summer break. Jol may have put faith into a strong first team line-up, but a lack of match fitness was prevalent and an eye for goal certainly wasn't forthcoming, especially in Bobby Zamora's case.

The return tie should offer a more open and expansive game, with playing conditions probably dictating the flow of the game. With that in mind, Jol is unlikely to risk too many of his stars in his starting line-up, although the opportunity to assess his newly inherited first team may prove too compelling. Certainties to miss the game remain Clint Dempsey, Carlos Salcido and Moussa Dembele; the latter injured and the first two still away due to international ties.

NSI coach Pauli Poulsen, in the meantime, has labelled the up-and-coming second leg as "the biggest match many have experienced."

Score Prediction: NSI Runavik 0(0) - 3(6) Fulham

Predicted Line-Up: Schwarzer; Briggs, Hangeland, Senderos, Hughes; Davies, Frei, Sidwell, Duff; Zamora, A.Johnson

On Familiar Ground
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Players/Baird/NorthernIreland1.jpg)

Chris Baird will be in familiar territory on Thursday evening when the Whites take on NSI Runavik Thursday in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League qualification tie.

The Northern Ireland defender faced the Faroe Islands last October in a European Championship qualification match at the Svangaskard Stadium, Toftir – so he certainly knows what to expect.

"It's up on a big hill - it's windy, cold - not the best facilities. But we have to go there and do the job," Baird told fulhamfc.com.

"You have to treat every team with respect, no matter who they are. It's down to us at the end of the day. We know that we're the better team, with great experience and good players. We have to go there and do the job, get a win and get back home and qualify, getting into the next round.

"It's nice to see these different places, obviously I've been there before, so I know what to expect. I'm sure for other players it will be an eye-opener because there's not a lot there and not a lot to do.

"It's going to be short and sharp but we know what to expect, so we'll go there, get the job done and get back home again."

Despite having only been back in training for a short period of time, Baird revealed that the squad have been looking in fine fettle.

"I think I speak for everyone in saying that we're all looking sharp in training," he said. "To be fair all the boys have come back fit and well. Most have only had two weeks off like Brede and Philippe Senderos, and the rest have had about four. So to be fair we've not lost much from last season anyway- it takes a bit more to lose your fitness. We've all come back fit and well, and we're raring to go!

"Most of the players will feel like it's a friendly. But it's in their minds as well that it's the Europa League, so we have to treat it as we would any other game."

For Thursday's victors a tie against Crusaders awaits in the second round – a fixture Baird is hoping to be a part of.

"It would be nice obviously to get back to Ireland. I don't go back much myself," he explained.
"It would be another tough game because I know what to expect from them. It's not easy going away to any team and as I said before we've got the quality in the team and we're getting fit, and we'll be raring to go."

Ex-Liverpool defender on Fulham's radar - report

John Arne Riise could be set to return to England to join his brother Bjorn Helge at Fulham, according to Italian reports.

Former Liverpool left-back Riise is surplus to requirements at Roma and was last week linked with a move to Championship club Southampton.

John Arne Riise set for South Coast return? (Report)
Former Liverpool star John Arne Riise could return to English football with Championship side Southampton.

The Italian press are reporting that the Riise does not figure in the plans of new Roma coach Luis Enrique.

This has alerted newly-promoted Saints, who are lining up an ambitious bid to lure the Norwegian to the south coast.

However it now seems that new Cottagers boss Martin Jol is prepared to offer the Norwegian international another chance in the Premier League.

Stockdale Swansong?

I`d hoped that it was all tabloid rubbish!

I`d hoped that Fulham had no intention of even discussing letting David Stockdale off the premises let alone sending him elsewhere.

But that does appear to be exactly what might be about to happen.

Yesterday the rumour broke that Swansea City were enquiring about our young keeper who only last year made it into the full England squad.

Today the tabloid press contains a quote that infers that Martin Jol might be persuaded to let him leave Craven Cottage either on a permanent basis or a loan when he`s quoted as having remarked,

"If you are a young player you should play so I feel we have to find opportunities for them."

Let it be a loan spell please! The guy has talent and should be our keeper one day!
