Title: Carling Cup factoid
Post by: rhyspabsolom on September 21, 2011, 05:54:30 AM
Fulham have not knocked a fellow top-flight side out since beating Birmingham in 2004.

That's balls.

Is there still a European slot up for grabs if you win the Carling Cup?

I always feel that we have underachieved in both this and the FA Cup Sponsored by Whoever It Is This Time Around in recent years.

yes. If a club were to lose to a team already qualified for Europe the spot would revert to the league.

Hence us getting into the competition at the end of the 2008 season.

Thought there were moves to scrap that, good to see it is still a potential route to Europe.

Sad but true - I've spent many a wet September/October night having my hopes dashed.

Since we knocked out Birmingham we have had a run of bad luck in the compeitition and also victim of some giant killings:

2010 - Stoke away and Dembele's season was cut brutally short.

2009 - Man Citeh away but had to field the resreves because of Europe (took them to extra time though)

2008 - Burnley away - lost but then I think they went onto make the semis after dispatching Arsenal (or was it Spurs)?

2007 - Lost to Bolton at home - blame Sanchez.

2006 - Lost to Wycombe at home - embarassing but they also did away with another Pl side and drew with Chelski at home.

2005 - Getting hazey now but I think we went out to WBA and if I remember Inamoto scored a screamer?

Real shame because although a pointless cup it is a backdoor into Europe and if we did win tonight we would be two matches and a two legged tie from the final.

Burnley away?  Superman is more effective beating kryptonite than us getting anything at Turf Moor

Bolton at home was a farce. How the ref didn't give us a foul after our defender (I forget who) was manhandled to the floor for their second goal...
One of my first games at the Cottage, that.
