The irony of course being that they are great friends, wrote songs for each other, wore each others band shirts on stage. The line in Sweet Home Alabama wasn't intended to defend the racism/bigotry in which Young pointed out in his song Alabama (and another that slips my mind), but more to defend the notion that 'all southerners are rednecks" which is even funnier because, as Don points out here, you don't get much more redneck than Lynyrd Skynyrd without calling yourself 'Kid Rock'
