Frugal Fulham can shut out Sunderland at the Stadium of Light
Don't expect goals this Saturday as Sunderland welcome Fulham to the Stadium of Light

Fulham's visit to Sunderland might not be the weekend's glamour tie but there is plenty to keep punters interested in this clash.

Both teams have endured rather uninspiring starts to their respective seasons, with the sides level on ten points with only goal difference separating Sunderland in 15th and Fulham in 16th.

If anybody was expecting things to drastically change in a flurry of goals this weekend, then it looks as though they will be sorely disappointed.

The goals haven't exactly flowed in the previous few meetings between these teams, with only one of their last six games yielding more than 2.5 goals.

That was in their last encounter when Fulham swept aside the Black Cats 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in April.

That was just the latest in a long line of disappointments for the North East club in clashes against Fulham.

Sunderland have only scored one goal in their previous six games against the Cottagers and none in their last four.

With Fulham boasting the sixth best away defence in the Premier League, Sunderland – who only have the tenth best attack – will have their work cut out to break down Martin Jol's men.

And, as both teams are languishing at the wrong end of the table, this promises to be a tight and tense affair.

Backing under 2.5 goals to be scored at 8/11 looks like the best way of making some cash out of this clash.

Opta Stats: Sunderland v Fulham

They may be at home, but Sunderland's recent record against Fulham points to a win for the Cottagers
Fulham have used just 20 players in the Premier League so far, fewer than any other team.

Sunderland have failed to score in five of their last six meetings with Fulham, including the last four in a row.

There have been just five goals scored in the last six matches between Fulham and Sunderland.

The Black Cats have only won three of the 14 Premier League meetings with Fulham and only scored in six.

Fulham have won just four of their last 42 Premier league away games.

Sunderland haven't had the same result in back to back Premier League games since they lost to West Brom and Birmingham in succession back in April.

Sunderland have kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League games at the Stadium of Light.

Clint Dempsey (28) has been fouled more often than any other player in the Premier League this season.

Four of the six goals scored direct from free kicks this season have come in Sunderland matches, two for and two against.

Fulham have conceded a joint-league high 33% of their goals in the final 15 minutes of games this season.

Jol returns to Twente with Fulham

FC Twente are already sure of their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, and Fulham FC will look to seal the other qualifying slot in Group K as Martin Jol returns to his old club.

Martin Jol's Fulham FC travel to already qualified FC Twente with the visitors secure in the knowledge that three points will guarantee their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

Previous meetings
• The sides drew 1-1 in London on matchday one. The 2010 finalists seemed on course for success in their first game against Dutch opponents when Andrew Johnson gave them a 19th-minute lead, but a ricochet off goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer following Luuk de Jong's header on 41 minutes earned Twente a useful point.

• Twente are yet to win in 12 games against English opposition, boasting the unenviable record W0 D5 L7 (W0 D3 L2 at home). They have drawn their last three games against English clubs in Enschede, either side of a 2-0 loss to Arsenal FC in UEFA Champions League qualifying which was staged in Arnhem.

Match background
• Twente have lost only one of their last 11 European home matches (3-1 against Villarreal CF in last season's UEFA Europa League quarter-finals), recording five wins and five draws in the process.

• Fulham have already played 12 European games this season, since entering the first qualifying round through the UEFA Respect Fair Play system. They have won seven of those, drawing three and losing two. They have won only one of their last four away games.

• The Cottagers are the only team to have made it all the way from the first qualifying round to the group stage this season.

Team facts
• Twente are the top scorers in the group stage to date with 12 goals; they have also had more shots on target than any other side, 38 in total.

• The Dutch outfit are at their deadliest in the latter period of the first half, scoring six of their goals between the 31st minute and the half-time whistle.

• Fulham's Andrew Johnson started the week as the second highest scorer in this season's group stage with five goals. Only RSC Anderlecht's Matías Suárez, with six, had scored more.

• Twente's Ola John has set up four goals in the group stage so far; twice as many as any other player in the competition.

• Bryan Ruiz joined Fulham from Twente on transfer deadline day, but he is not eligible to play for his new club in the UEFA Europa League as he has already represented the Enschede side in Europe this season.

• Fulham's Dutch manager Martin Jol needs no introduction to Twente; he played for the club from 1979 to 1982.

• Jol and his Twente counterpart Co Adriaanse have been on opposite sides on numerous occasions - as players when Jol's ADO Den Haag team took on Adriaanse's FC Utrecht in the 1970s - and as coaches when Jol's Roda JC and RKC Waalwijk teams took on Willem II, AFC Ajax and AZ Alkmaar teams coached by Adriaanse.

• Adriaanse (2000-01) and Jol (2009-10) were both Ajax coaches at one stage in their careers.

• Twente's Nacer Chadli and Fulham's Moussa Dembélé are Belgian international team-mates. Dembélé also made his name in Dutch football with spells at Willem (2005-06) and AZ (2006-10).

• Twente's Denny Landzaat previously played in England for Wigan Athletic FC from 2006 to 2008.

• Fulham's Czech defender Zdeněk Grygera played in the Netherlands for Ajax from 2003 to 2007.

OB and Wisła playing catch-up

Group K's chasing teams meet on matchday five, with Odense BK and Wisła Kraków eager to keep their UEFA Europa League dream alive; both will be out if Fulham FC win at FC Twente in the section's other fixture.

Victory is essential for Odense BK and Wisła Kraków as they strive to keep their UEFA Europa League adventure alive; both will be out if Fulham FC win at FC Twente in the group's other fixture.

Previous meetings
• OB beat Wisła 3-1 in Krakow on matchday one, a scoreline that matched their hosts' worst ever home result in Europe. Andraž Kirm (54) had cancelled out an opener from OB's Andreas Johansson (35) but Peter Utaka (80) and substitute Rasmus Falk (90+2) struck to secure the win in Wisła's first meeting with Danish opponents - and OB's first match against Polish opposition.

• In total, 26 games have been played between Polish and Danish sides in UEFA club competition, with the Polish teams recording 11 wins to the Danes' nine, and six matches ending in draws.

Match background
• OB are on a three-game losing streak in Group K, including their last two home games. They have won only once - against Villarreal CF in this season's UEFA Champions League play-off round - in their last five continental fixtures at the Odense Stadion, drawing two and losing two.

• Wisła have won two of their five UEFA away games this season - both victories coming in the qualifying rounds - but have lost all four of their UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage fixtures on the road, a run that dates back to the 2006/07 competition.

Team facts
• Odense's next goal will be their 100th in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League; this is their 57th appearance in the two competitions.

• Odense are five goals shy of conceding their 150th in UEFA club competition; this will be their 98th UEFA game.

• Wisła's 4-1 defeat at Fulham FC on matchday four marked their 100th game in UEFA club competition; their record in those fixtures is W45 D18 L37.

• Wisła and OB met in a friendly game on 14 February 2009, with OB winning 4-2 at a mid-season training camp in Spain.

• Polish goalkeeper Arkadiusz Onyszko represented OB from 2003 to 2009. He later returned to Poland with Odra Wodzisław. He played against Wisła in the last match of his career before a serious kidney condition prompted his retirement.

• Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, who has Polish roots, was born in Odense when her father, Piotr, was playing for local side Boldklubben 1909. He previously played in Poland for Miedź Legnica and Zagłębie Lubin.

• Coach Henrik Clausen has spent almost his entire career with OB, barring a brief spell as assistant coach at Vejle BK (2001-03). He led the club's youth and reserve teams for a long while before being given the senior job in 2010, guiding them to second place in the league. His side finished fourth in their section in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage - behind VfB Stuttgart, BSC Young Boys and Getafe CF.

• A 1-0 derby defeat at local rivals MKS Cracovia Kraków at the start of November prompted the dismissal of Wisła coach Robert Maaskant, who led the club to the Polish title last season. His assistant Kazimierz Moskal has been placed in temporary charge until the winter break.

Fulham trial Whitecaps starlet
Salgado links up with Premier League club

Omar Salgado: On trial with Fulham

Vancouver Whitecaps have confirmed that their striker Omar Salgado has linked up with Premier League side Fulham.

The American youth international arrived in England on Wednesday and has now begun training with the West London outfit.

The 18-year-old picked up a Spanish passport in September, meaning should he impress he would not need a work-permit to finalise a move to Fulham.
"This is a great opportunity for Omar to continue with his development," head coach Martin Rennie told Vancouver's website.

"Not only has he grown as a player in the last year with our club, his involvement with the United States national team program has helped him improve as a professional.

"We're excited that Omar will have the chance to learn in a top professional environment like Fulham FC."

The player himself, who was the overall number one pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, has featured 14 times for the Whitecaps this season.

"It will be an excellent experience," said Salgado.

"It is always good to be able to train with different teams and experience different styles and environments. Opportunities like this help me grow as a player and a person."

Prior to being picked by Vancouver, Salgado had a training spell with Everton.

Game preview - Sunderland (a)

The story from both camps is perhaps one of over-expectation and under-achievement. Both Sunderland and visitors Fulham have had a torrid opening to the campaign and find themselves languishing in the lower rungs of the Premier League - Fulham 16th with Sunderland one place above.

Maybe, though, the similarities end there. As the crow flies, 390 miles separate Craven Cottage and the Stadium of Light while 219 miles separate the birth place of the respective managers of both sides. Steve Bruce is a man built wholly on solidity, though his teams' style of play contradicts this to a certain extent, while Martin Jol is the epitome of Dutch football's higher echelons of footballing class. He may not have total football down to a tee in England just yet but he has time on his hands.

There is always the argument that Martin Jol may well be the problem for Fulham right now, what with his fluctuating ideas on tactical decisions and the uncanny ability for his team to play exceedingly well and still stumble to what, on occasion, can be humiliating defeat. More than likely, though, it is a mere period of settling in which his new players and staff alike begin to acclimatise to life by the Thames.

Bruce, though, in the Sunderland hot seat, doesn't have such a strong defence to fall back on. He has been at the helm for two years and should, theoretically, know the club down to a minute degree. Results haven't been forthcoming though and they are an expectation, with significant outlays spent over the last 3 summers. Asamoah Gyan's untimely departure won't have helped matters on Wearside, however, and what Bruce probably needs is something quite similar to Jol in the opposite dugout - some temporal leeway.

Sunderland have picked up 5 points from 5 games over the October and November period, featuring one win and two draws. Most recently, they fell to the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford, where a respectable fight was put up but to no ultimate avail.

Fulham's form has been a tad more difficult to predict. A 3-1 home defeat to Tottenham - one in which the home side could have plausibly won given their second half domination - came on the back of a particularly warming 4-1 win over Wisla Krakow in Europe and a somewhat surprisingly early away win at the DW Stadium.

In last season's parallel fixture, Mark Hughes' Fulham side managed a somewhat startlingly simple 3-0 win up North, Simon Davies taking most of the days plaudits. At home, Fulham were held to a 0-0 draw.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet may be a doubt for the host, after breaking his nose while strikers Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham are certainties to miss out.

For Fulham, Simon Davies will not be able to replicate his success on this turf last season, with Jol expecting the Welshmen to need another week's rest at least. Grygrea will of course play no part while Steve Sidwell and Stephen Kelly will stay in London.

Predicted line-up: Schwarzer; Riise, Hangeland, Senderos, Hughes; Dempsey, Murphy, Etuhu, Duff; Zamora, Johnson

Score prediction: Sunderland 1 - 0 Fulham

Jol backs Zamora for England place

Martin Jol has backed Bobby Zamora to make England's Euro 2012 squad, claiming he provides Fabio Capello with the guile other strikers are missing.

Zamora missed two good chances to mark his full international debut with a goal in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Sweden and afterwards branded his own performance as "not the greatest".

But with Wayne Rooney suspended for the group stages of the tournament, there is a place in attack up for grabs and his Fulham boss says 30-year-old Zamora can feel the breach. Jol said: "He was very quick to call himself, but players know when they haven't played well."

He added: "When a striker scores he has done well. It's about performances so if he gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

"They are all different. Darren Bent is different, Jermain Defoe is different, Wayne Rooney certainly is different. And I don't feel they have a lot of players who are a real number nine who can hold up the ball.

"It's up to the manager - if he wants to play with a goalscorer, then Bent is probably the best goalscorer in England, he's certainly different to Bobby.

"But if you play Bobby with offensive midfield players he can be very useful. If you play him on his own with a flat midfield, you are better playing Darren Bent.

"They give all the options so I think Capello will think about taking him because he is a different sort of number nine.

"Capello will know he is a number nine who will hold the ball up all the time. His first touch is very good, he's good in the box, he's a link-up number nine.

"Peter Crouch is probably similar. He's better than people give him credit for at holding the ball. But Bobby is probably the most gifted. He's not only a link-up player, not an immobile number nine, he's an intelligent number nine. He's very versatile."

Lawro's prediction
(http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/56696000/gif/_56696915_sun_ful_0506.gif)
Sunderland v Fulham
I thought Fulham would be better under Martin Jol but with the firepower they have at their disposal you expect them to be OK. Away from home though they have been poor.

Sunderland simply have not replaced Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan and I think they will be dicing with relegation as I just don't know where their goals will come from.

Some of the fans have decided they want Steve Bruce out and Fulham at home is a game that supporters will expect to pick up three points. Bruce has to win and I think Fulham's away form is so bad that they will.

Prediction: 2-1

Zamora Support

Although it wasn`t the best of Wembley debuts for Bobby Zamora, our striker does have a world famous fan.

None other than the 1966 World Cup winning hat-trick hero striker Geoff Hurst believes that England could do worse than take Zamora to the 2012 Euro Finals, commenting,

"I like Zamora and think he`s underrated. He`s got a great opportunity to put his name in the picture. He`s one I like and I think he has a good chance."

Hopefully Geoff has called the situation right!

Stockdale Left in Limbo

Whilst Fabio Capello tried all and sundry in the two recent internationals, against Spain and Sweden, one position was left unaltered!

Although there were three keeper`s in the squad, Fabio looked no further than Joe Hart leaving the other two in limbo.

One of those, our very own David Stockdale (currently on loan at Ipswich Town), would have been dying to get his chance.

But it wasn`t to be.

Instead, having not had the chance to prove himself, on the international stage, Stockdale must now hope that his chances of going to the 2012 Euro Finals remain unhindered and that the likes of Robert Green, Paul Robinson and Ben Foster don`t come back into the reckoning.

Bobby can be just Fab for Capello! Fulham boss backs Zamora for Euro 2012

Martin Jol has backed Bobby Zamora to make England's Euro 2012 squad, claiming he provides Fabio Capello with the guile other strikers are missing.

Zamora missed two good chances to mark his full international debut with a goal in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Sweden and afterwards branded his own performance as 'not the greatest'.

Give him a chance: Fulham boss Martin Jol has backed Bobby Zamora to star for England at Euro 2012

'He was very quick to call himself, but players know when they haven't played well,' said Jol.

'When a striker scores he has done well.

'It's about performances so if he gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

'They are all different. Darren Bent is different, Jermain Defoe is different, Wayne Rooney certainly is different. And I don't feel they have a lot of players who are a real number nine who can hold up the ball.

Hold up: Zamora in action against Sweden at Wembley

'It's up to the manager - if he wants to play with a goalscorer, then Bent is probably the best goalscorer in England, he's certainly different to Bobby.

'But if you play Bobby with offensive midfield players he can be very useful. If you play him on his own with a flat midfield, you are better playing Darren Bent.

'He's not only a link-up player, not an immobile number nine, he's an intelligent number nine. He's very versatile.'

Zamora will be back in action when Fulham head to Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

And Jol is hoping to reap the benefits of having a player desperate to prove himself over the rest of the season.

'Even if you are not involved in the national team you should be motivated and I think he is,' added the Dutchman.

'It certainly gives you an extra dimension playing for the national team and hopefully he'll be involved. I think it can certainly help.'

Jol will be without Stephen Kelly at the Stadium of Light after the defender suffered a groin injury on Republic of Ireland duty last week.

Fulham duo passed fit for Sunderland clash

Sunderland v Fulham

FULHAM are boosted by the return of Aaron Hughes and Philippe Senderos for Saturday's trip to the Stadium of Light.

The defensive duo have been sidelined with thigh problems, but are back in full training and in contention to start as the Whites bid to get back to winning ways.

Stephen Kelly misses out after picking up a groin injury on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, while Steve Sidwell is a major doubt.

The midfielder has had minor surgery to remove a hernia, but will get a chance to prove his fitness in training before the long trip to the North East.

Simon Davies (knee) is still sidelined.

Amauri agent confirms Tottenham and Fulham target to leave Juventus

Tottenham and Fulham target Amauri is set to leave Juventus in January with both English clubs in the running for his signature.

The forward is no longer wanted by the Turin team and was sent on loan to Parma last season and has not played for the Serie A side since January.

The Brazil-born striker's number 11 shirt was reassigned to Paolo De Ceglie and the club are now ready to offload Amauri in the winter transfer window.

The 31-year-old's agent Ernesto Bronzetti told Sky Italia: "We have found another team to take the player in January.

"There is no deal confirmed but we hope that in the next few days we can speak more clearly. Juventus have no problems with him leaving it is just a matter of how much money. I can not give names and prefer not to say whether it is an English club. All will be revealed in time."

Zamora tipped for Euro 2012

Fulham boss Martin Jol has backed Bobby Zamora to make England's Euro 2012 squad, claiming he provides the guile other strikers lack.

Zamora missed two good chances to mark his full international debut with a goal in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Sweden and afterwards branded his own performance as "not the greatest".

However, with Wayne Rooney suspended for the group stages of the tournament, Jol is convinced the 30-year-old could be the man to fill the breach for Fabio Capello.

"He was very quick to call himself but players know when they haven't played well," said the Dutchman. "When a striker scores he has done well. It's about performances so if he gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

Jol backs Zamora for Euro 2012

Fulham boss Martin Jol has backed Bobby Zamora to make England's European Championship squad, claiming he provides Fabio Capello with the guile other strikers are missing.
Zamora missed two good chances to mark his full international debut with a goal in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Sweden and afterwards branded his own performance as "not the greatest".

But with Wayne Rooney suspended for the group stages of the tournament, there is a place in attack up for grabs and Jol says 30-year-old Zamora can feel the breach.

"He was very quick to call himself but players know when they haven't played well," said Jol.

"When a striker scores he has done well. It's about performances so if he gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

But if you play Bobby with offensive midfield players he can be very useful."

Homecomings

With the most recent international break behind us and none scheduled this spring, Fulham's season can now fully set sail until season's end.

That is, until those obnoxious FA Cup weekends where we're not playing due to an earlier exit from the competition.

Anywho, Saturday will mark just the third time in the past three seasons that Fulham have to travel following an international break. Bizarre, but true:

2008-09
Fulham 2-1 Bolton Wanderers
Fulham 0-0 Sunderland
Fulham 0-1 Liverpool

2009-10
Fulham 2-1 Everton
Fulham 2-0 Hull City
Birmingham 1-0 Fulham

2010-11
Fulham 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Fulham 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Fulham 3-0 Blackpool

2011-12
Fulham 1-1 Blackburn Rovers
Stoke City 2-0 Fulham
Sunderland ?-? Fulham

Here I was thinking our record overall after international breaks is bad when, really, it's pretty darn good: P11 W5 D2 L4. Is that all from the coincidence of our constant home games? Perhaps.

Fulham's record on the road in general is not great, so it's no surprise that we've never even gotten an away point after an international break.

Yet this year it feels a bit worrying. The home match against Blackburn felt like a loss although we nicked a draw. Last month our travel to Stoke City was probably the worst performance of the season.

Here's hoping Saturday is a bit different.

Fulham star set for op

ZDENEK Grygera will go under the knife next month as he starts the long road to recovery following his knee injury.

The Fulham full-back ruptured his cruciate ligaments after getting his studs stuck in the turf during last week's defeat to Spurs.

The injury is likely to keep the Czech out for the rest of the season.

"He will have an operation in December," said boss Martin Jol. "It's the worst injury in football, so he won't be back until May, but it could be later than that.

"He only had a one-year deal at this club, so it's an awful situation for him."

Fulham boss 'not worried' by AJ contract wrangle

MARTIN Jol insists he's 'not worried' about Andy Johnson's contract saga at Craven Cottage.

Talks with the Fulham frontman over a new deal have stalled after he rejected the club's latest offer of a one-year extension.

The 11-goal striker, who has been linked with west London rivals QPR, wants fresh terms that will tie him to SW6 until 2014.

But boss Jol insists he's not pressing the panic button over the situation.

"I'm not worried," he said. "Of course there's always interest from other clubs but he's still under contract until the end of the season."

The Return of Zamora?
There are current newspaper reports that allege that a worsening of relations between Bobby Zamora and Martin Jol, at Fulham, could result in the centre forward's depature in January.  They then go on to speculate that West Ham may be interested in re-signing their former striker, although there could also be interest from Championshp rivals Crystal Palace.  It may be a case of sports writers putting 2 + 2 together and coming up with = 5, but, nevertheless, it is an intriguing prospect.  Bobby Zamora was always a striker that gave 110% to the Hammers cause and he might very well  welcome a return to a club that he has always supported.  I was told that Zamora attended the recent Brighton Vs Hammers match and I remember at the time wondering if there was any significance in that?  So, I suppose the question is, would it be a good move for both the player and the club, or should they heed the old maxim, 'never go back.'

It looks that Sam Allardyce would like to reinforce central defence by signng free agent, Fransciso Pavon.  Pavon, a former Champions League winner with Real Madrid, certainly has a good pedigree and at 31 years of age should still have plenty to offer.  Pavon certainly seems to be a very good option, but apparently Sam Allardyce has stated that the player's lack of recent competitive football, and corresponding match fitness, could be an obstacle to a deal, as he needs a player that can go in and do a job immediately. Allardyce and his coaching and fitness team are currently running a rule over Pavon's fitness levels, before making a final decision.  Another option mooted in the press is 32 year old Leeds Utd defender, Andy O'Brien.  O'Brien is, of course, ex-Bolton and, moreover, played there there under Allardyce's management.  I should imagine that this is a back up deal, just in case Allardyce fails to land any of his priority loan/free agent targets, but we shall see?

All has gone quiet on the Mervan Celik front, although it is thought that the player recently had a successful trial at the club.  It could be that the deal is more or less tied up for completion in the January window.  The club certainly should not delay in securing it, because there is apparently some interest from other clubs.  Celik would certainly be a good potential signing, not only for the remainder of this season, but also for our much anticipated return to the top tier.  He is pacy, creative, can play on both flanks and scores goals.  We certainly need to make one or two eye catching signings in the January, to give the club a boost, strengthen the squad and send out a clear message of intent for the remainder of the season.  It has been indicated that West Ham have money to spend in January, lets just hope that they actually spend it and spend it well!

The loanee 'revolving door' at Upton Park has continued apace this week with the news that both Robert Hall and Christan Montano have been sent out on loan once again.  Hall will return to Oxford Utd, while Montano has joined Dagenham and Redbridge in League 2.  Hall onviously enjoyed it at Oxford Utd and it is good that he is returning to get some further first team league action.  However, I do hope that Hall will return and make his West Ham first team debut before the conclusion of the season.  While Montano needs to demonstrate at Dagenham and Redbridge that he has both the ability and the attitude to succeed at Upton Park.  He can only do that by training hard, getting selected consistently and impressing in League Two.  I know that it must be fustrating for Montano to be loaned out again, but he must repeat his approach at Notts County and treat it as a positive learning experience and an opportunity to excel.  Marek Stech has now returned from his short loan spell at Yeovil and one can only guess what his position is currently at the club?  I hope that they persuade him to sign a new contract, because I feel that he may well be a better goal keeping prospect than either Boffin or Kuruz and a prospective, eventual successor to Rob Green.

Finally, there was positive news this week on the injury front.  Both Matt Taylor and Guy Demel have returned to fitness and Taylor could make a first team return against Coventry City, this weekend.  Demel has now successfully come through two Developmental Squad games , but may need to work on his conditioning and match fitness, before pushing for inclusion in the first team.  Taylor is crucial to us on the left flank, he gives us balance and is dangerous delivering the ball in to the box, both from open and set plays.  Taylor's return will be most welcome, while Demel is a big, powerful and experienced defender, whose inclusion can only strengthen our rearguard.  In addition, Henri Lansbury is estimated to be within two weeks of a return to full training, which will nicely increase the competition for places in central midfield.

Finally, in terms of our promotion campaign, it is very much a case of 'so far so good.'  We finished the initial third of season, nicely positioned in 2nd place, with Southampton still within striking distance.  So far, we have been disciplined, efficient and secured results, without ever really hitting the heights, playing wise.  The good thing is that we have been able to secure a confortable 2nd place whilst mostly still playing in' second gear.'  It will be interesting to see if we continue in this vein or whether  the side will now be able to 'move up a gear' in the final two-thirds of the season?  Sam Allardyce promised us that the side would be a lot better by May than it started off in August and there is no good reason to disbelieve him!

As for the forthcoming Coventry City match, I reckon that we will secure another good three away points, with a comfortable 0-2 victory.   COYI!

SJ. Chandos.

Jol tips Zamora for Euros
Fulham striker leading candidate to replace Rooney in Euro 2012

Martin Jol: Fulham manager believes his man can lead England's attack next summer

Martin Jol believes the guile of Bobby Zamora will be the quality that sees him claim a place in Fabio Capello's Euro 2012 squad.

Zamora was handed his full England debut in midweek against Sweden but missed two good chances to mark the occasion with a goal.

Indeed, the Fulham striker described his own performance as "not the greatest" but with Wayne Rooney suspended for the group games, the Fulham boss is confident his man can provide the solution.

"He was very quick to call himself, but players know when they haven't played well," said Jol.
"When a striker scores he has done well. It's about performances, so if he gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

Number nine

"They are all different. Darren Bent is different, Jermain Defoe is different, and Wayne Rooney certainly is different. And I don't feel they have a lot of players who are a real number nine who can hold up the ball.

"It's up to the manager - if he wants to play with a goalscorer, then Bent is probably the best goalscorer in England, he's certainly different to Bobby."

In the aftermath of the failure of England in South Africa at the last World Cup, Capello has sought to change England's pattern of play.

And Jol believes with the inclusion of Zamora at the apex of the attack for England, his style of play provides the national team with more options when in possession.

"If you play Bobby with the offensive midfield players he can be very useful," he added.

Versatile

"If you play him on his own with a flat midfield, you are better playing Darren Bent. They give all the options so I think Capello will think about taking him because he is a different sort of number nine.

"Capello will know he is a number nine who will hold the ball up all the time. His first touch is very good, he's good in the box, and he's a link-up number nine.

"Peter Crouch is probably similar. He's better than people give him credit for at holding the ball. But Bobby is probably the most gifted.

"He's not only a link-up player, not an immobile number nine; he's an intelligent number nine. He's very versatile."

Queens Park Rangers ready to strike with £2m raid for in-form Fulham forward Andrew Johnson
Queens Park Rangers are planning a £2 million bid for Fulham striker Andrew Johnson as they fight to preserve their Premier League status.

QPR ready to strike with £2m raid for in-form goalscorer Andrew Johnson
Photo: ACTION IMAGES

Johnson's deal at Craven Cottage runs out at the end of the season and he has so far failed to agree terms on a new contract, having wanted more than the one-year extension on offer.

Fulham do not want the 30-year-old striker to leave for free and, although they do not want to lose him in the January window, it may be that he is sold so that a fee can be recouped.

Despite signing the likes of Jay Bothroyd and the injured DJ Campbell, QPR are desperate to add a proven Premier League goalscorer to their squad.

New chairman Tony Fernandes will make more cash available to manager Neil Warnock, who may also try to revive a deal for Tottenham central defender Sebastien Bassong.

A deadline-day deal to sign Bassong collapsed, even though he is understood to have signed his part of the paperwork, because Spurs failed in their efforts to sign Gary Cahill from Bolton. It's possible that QPR might also renew their interest in Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha.

Johnson is believed to be asking for a salary of £2million-a-year and QPR are understood to be willing to meet his demands. The dilemma for Fulham, given their own difficult position in the league, is whether they are willing for him to leave and strengthen a potential relegation rival.

Johnson has battled back from serious injury and has been in fine form this season for Fulham, scoring eight goals in as many games, but he regards the next contract he signs as his last big career opportunity.

Former Fulham defender jailed for witness intimidation
by DAN on NOVEMBER 17, 2011

Here's a story you don't read every day. Elliot Omozusi, once a promising young full-back with Fulham, was jailed for two and a half years today after being found guilty of witness intimidation at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Omozusi, who had been playing for Leyton Orient, was one of a gang of six men who chased a man, who had given evidence that had to led to the killers of Agnes Sina-Inakoju being jailed for life. Sixteen year-old Sina-Inakoju was shot dead in an east London pizza restaurant last April. The witness, who can't be named for legal reasons, helped police find the killers - Leon Dunkley and Mohammed Smoured – after his house was ransacked following the shooting.

The witness ran to police officers after a chance encounter with the gang members on a night out in Liverpool last May. They chased him from outside a nightclub until they were stopped by an on-duty police officer. Omozusi, who was wearing a shirt emblazoned with 'London Fields' – the name of the gang connected with Agnes' shooting – when he was arrested, claimed that he 'was just having a laugh'. It was an excuse the police – and the jury – didn't believe.

It all seems a far cry from Omozusi's Fulham career. He looked a real prospect when he emerged from the club's youth team as a tall and attacking defender. He made his debut in the League Cup defeat by Wycombe in September 2006 and made his first start for the club at Leicester in the FA Cup. He made his first league start in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland in October and, the following week, saw him create a crucial second goal for Clint Dempsey in a vital 3-1 win over Reading. He was, however, sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. Omozusi went on to make nine appearances that year, before falling down the pecking order when Roy Hodgson replaced Lawrie Sanchez as manager.

He had loan spells at Norwich and Charlton, before being released by Fulham in January 2010. He joined Leyton Orient, initially on trial, and went on to make 62 appearances for the O's before his trial.

Life: what happens while you were making other plans

You might not have been reading CCN in 2007, but if you were, you may recall this:

Cruel, cruel, cruel.

A beautiful, freezing December evening. A sleepy first half, an engaging second, and then disaster. Injury time: some bother as Newcastle attack, by the penalty spot, Omozusi – otherwise excellent – late on a tackle, over tumbles the forward. A huge, horrible pause, then we see that a penalty has been given, and that we aren't going to win today, we aren't even going to draw. Joey Barton's kick confirms a defeat. Heartbreaking.

(Newcastle at home, of course, the straw that broke our camel's back)

I remember after the game texting Mark Maunders, and part of his reply was about how Omozusi was gutted, and a really good kid.  Mark would know.

David Pleat thought he looked a good prospect:

DP Elliott Omozusi. Very early days but my instincts when I first saw the Fulham right-back told me he could be an Englishman to emerge. Full of composure and easy movement.

And he did.  Composure was what stood out to me, too. Also that quickness, and yes, supposedly a good kid.

So all of this just goes to show how you never really know.   Omozusi slipped from the fringes of a Premier League club down to League One, having failed to stick at Norwich and Charlton.  Who knows what was going on in his life, but the fall was intriguing, the latest developments unfathomable.  I'm not trying to moralise – these things are always too complicated for that – it's just crazy to think what might have been for Omozusi, and now what is for Omozusi.  I'd say it's sad, but what he and his friends did doesn't warrant sympathy.  Still, whew.... bad news all round.

Fulham Team Report

FULHAM

Coach: Martin Jol (since 07/06/2011)

Last Result: 3-1 loss at home to Tottenham, November 06

Record: 2-5-4

Streak: Lost 1

Next Match: away to Sunderland, November 19

Europe: UEFA Europa League (Group K)

Striker Mousa Dembele would welcome the challenge of testing himself a "step higher" were the chance to come along. The 24-year-old Belgian forward, signed from AZ Alkmaar in August 2010, has been linked with a move to Tottenham. While Dembele maintains he is more than happy at Craven Cottage, the chance of possibly playing in a team competing at the other end of the Barclays Premier League would be something to consider. Speaking to Flemish daily newspaper De Standaard, Dembele said: "I did well last season when I was not injured, through many matches for Fulham, so why not step higher?"

BOBBY ZAMORA MUST GET EURO JOB

MARTIN JOL says Bobby Zamora can help to solve England's striker problems at next summer's Euro 2012.

Fulham striker Zamora, 30, made his first England start in the 1-0 win over Sweden on Tuesday – but admitted his full debut could have gone better.

But club boss Jol insists his player is the best target man available to Three Lions coach Fabio Capello.

Capello is still weighing up his options about how to fill the gap left by Wayne Rooney's three-match suspension.

And Jol reckons the prospect of pairing Zamora with an attacking midfielder like Steven Gerrard before Rooney's return would boost England's hopes.

Jol said: "If Bobby gets another chance or a couple of chances, he will take it because he is different.

"I don't feel England have a lot of players who can hold up the ball.

"He is a link-up No.9 and is probably the most gifted.

"It's up to the manager. If he wants to play with a goalscorer, then Darren Bent is probably the best goalscorer in England. But if you play Bobby with offensive midfield players, he can be very useful. You can play with the Gerrard type of player or the second type of striker, or a No.10 even.

"I think that would help Bobby, because he can get on the ball and lay it off."

Rooney is due to appeal against the length of his ban on December 8.

But Jol believes Rooney and Zamora could provide a deadly pairing when the Manchester United man returns.

The Dutchman added: "If you play with a 4-4-1-1 and with Rooney and Bobby, I think Bobby would exploit his qualities 100 per cent."

Former Tottenham star Zamora was left frustrated after missing two chances against the Swedes.

But Jol believes the forward was being hard on himself.

He added: "He was very quick to call himself but players know when they haven't played well.

"If he'd have scored, he'd have done well. When a striker scores, he has done well. He's eager for another chance."

Zamora is your most gifted No9, says Fulham chief Jol

FULHAM manager Martin Jol has backed striker Bobby Zamora to win a place in England's squad for Euro 2012, calling him the country's most gifted No9.

Zamora was given a chance to impress against Sweden on Tuesday and put in a mixed performance, leading the line well but lacking ruthlessness in front of goal.

The 30-year-old faces stiff competition for a place in Fabio Capello's final 23-man squad, notably from Chelsea youngster Daniel Sturridge and Liverpool's Andy Carrol.

But, speaking ahead of tomorrow's Premier League trip to Sunderland, Jol said: "They are all different. Darren Bent is different, Jermain Defoe is different, Wayne Rooney certainly is different. I don't feel they have a lot of players who are a real No9 who can hold up the ball.

"If he [Capello] wants to play with a goalscorer, then Bent is probably the best in England, he's certainly different to Bobby. But if you play Bobby with offensive midfield players he can be very useful.

"He is a No9 who will hold the ball up all the time. His first touch is very good, he's good in the box, he's a link-up No9. Peter Crouch is probably similar. He's better than people give him credit for at holding the ball. But Bobby is probably the most gifted."

Jol is without full-back Stephen Kelly for the Sunderland game after he was injured on international duty.

Fulham boss warns Spurs over Dembele

MARTIN Jol has slapped a not for sale sign on Tottenham Hotspur target Moussa Dembele.

Spurs reportedly saw two bids turned down for the Belgian last season, and are considering lodging and improved £10million offer in January.

However, boss Jol has warned his former club that Dembele is going nowhere.

"For me it's important that I've got good players," he said.

"Maybe someone told you about Tottenham, I don't even know. There's a lot of interest in good players and I've got a few.

"It's about us to keep them here, and that's what we're trying to do."

Bobby Zamora not for sale, says Fulham boss

FULHAM manager Martin Jol insists he has no intention of selling star striker Bobby Zamora in January.

The England striker has been strongly linked with a move away from Craven Cottage in the new year after a reported training ground bust-up with his boss.

But Jol admits the Whites can't cope without their big number nine.

"He didn't play for a couple of matches away from home and we had a slight problem," said the Dutchman. "That is how important he can be.

"He's versatile - you saw against Wigan when he went out on the wing. He's not only a player who can link up. He's not an immobile number nine."

Christmas Shopping

I'm sure most of you will be aware of the wonderful books about Fulham produced by Ken Coton & Martin Plumb through the Ashwater Press imprint. They've had some issues of late trying to engage with the club and this has put them in a difficult position regarding the production of future books. This would be a crying shame as Ken and Martin have produced most of the very best books about Fulham, and certainly filled the void that exisited from the official side for many years. Both Richard and I are keen to give Ashwater any assistance we can and so, it is with a slightly shameful face (I should have done this weeks ago!), I finally get round to reproducing their recent advert for the new Ashwater 2012 Fulham Desk Diary.

———————————————

First of all we would like to thank you all for the calls, e-mails and letters we've received from you with regard to Fulham FC's decision to 'de-select' us as a supplier of books and heritage material. We also would like to thank you for all the correspondence that you've sent to Fulham as a protest; we are flattered and it is sincerely appreciated. From what we understand, no-one to date has been given a satisfactory reply as to why Ashwater books cannot be stocked alongside those of another 'licensee'.

Anyway, many of you have asked us whether we could produce something for this Christmas. Well, Fulham's decision came far too late to finalise any significant book offering, but instead we have provided something hopefully just as good – an ideal stocking filler for Mum, Dad, granddad, uncle, son, brother, friend and any other relative – and a great present for yourself.

The

ASHWATER 2012 DESK DIARY

With Fulham pictures by Ken Coton and from the Ashwater archive.

It is naturally a proper functional diary, but not your 'usual' diary of course .................

It is a 128-page diary, approximately 9 inches by 6½ (235mm x 165mm).
It will be a quality hardback production. It has over 70 colour and black and white Fulham FC pictures.
Across five decades of Ken Coton's archive.
Many of the pictures previously unseen or not seen for 30–40 years.
It contains detailed captions and Fulham trivia.
It contains a weekly 'anecdote' relating to Fulham's colourful history over the last fifty years.
A foreword from Steve Pound – MP.
We sincerely hope that you will support us in this project as it could be the basis for next year's books.

The price will be £9.95, but that's not much more than a decent ordinary diary, and remember it's not just a diary – it's a Fulham book as well! You will be able to collect from outside the ground before the start of the four December Fulham home matches (assuming we haven't sold out by then).

We can also post you copies. Postage will be £2.25 per copy in the UK (Overseas postage rates available on request). You can order now by sending your details with a cheque for £12.20 payable to ASHWATER PRESS to Ashwater Press, 68 Tranmere Road, Twickenham, Middlesex TW2 7JB. Thanks! Maybe you could buy two, one for keeps and one for daily use! We'll post two copies for £22.

Please Note: We would like to stress that we have printed a limited number this year and 60% of them have already been sold in the last four weeks. For those not collecting we would request that you order soon to avoid a Christmas disappointment.

Any queries or mailed orders, either e-mail [email protected] or use the Ashwater order line and leave an order by phone on 01344 – 624231

Best wishes – and thanks for your support

Dickson Etuhu issues Fulham quit threat

DICKSON Etuhu admits he may be forced to quit Fulham in January if he continues to warm the bench.

The midfielder has made 10 starts this season under new boss Martin Jol, but just two of those have come in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has preferred to partner Steve Sidwell with skipper Danny Murphy in the centre of the park, with Etuhu forced to play a bit-part from the bench.

And the frustrated Nigerian international, who is contracted to Craven Cottage until 2014, admits he is considering his future in SW6.

He said: "It's difficult if you only get 10 or 15 minutes. It's very hard to get involved in the game, especially in my position.

"At the end of the day I'm not playing much now and come January I'll look at that.

"I'm happy the team's doing well and if I don't get my chance I'll sit down with my people and have a chat about it.

"If I have to make some changes then I'll have to. I'm 29 and I want to enjoy my years."

Etuhu was a regular under former managers Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes before Jol's arrival in the summer.

And the 29-year-old admits he's concerned his fitness is suffering due to his lack of game time.

"It's difficult to take," he admitted. "I do get frustrated but that's football.

"The worst thing about it is you lose your fitness and when you come in to play once every three or four weeks it's very difficult to enjoy. These periods are a test and I'm sure I'll come out the other side strong."

With Sidwell doubtful, Etuhu could make a rare start for tomorrow's visit to his former club Sunderland.

And he insists he's desperate to make his mark against the Black Cats, adding: "There's added incentive and I've got a lot of good friends there. They're a good team and one of the best in their area."

Sunderland find themselves struggling down in 15th position in the league having picked up 10 points from their 11 matches.

Fulham braced for QPR raid as Warnock eyes £2m Johnson

Queens Park Rangers are set to make a £2million offer for Fulham striker Andy Johnson.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and Rangers boss Warnock has made the former Everton and Crystal Palace hitman his prime target.

Wanted: QPR are set to make a £2m move for Fulham striker Andy Johnson

Johnson has been offered a new one-year extension by the Craven Cottage club.

But talks over a new deal have stalled, with Johnson wanting more than the 12 months currently on offer.

Fulham want to keep Johnson, but there hand could be forced in January to avoid him leaving for nothing at the end of the season.

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes will hand Warnock a £15m kitty to spend in January with Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong also a target.

Cottage ace drops quit hint

Dickson Etuhu has admitted that he will consider his future with Fulham in January if he continues to watch from the sidelines.
The 29-year-old Nigerian midfielder, who featured regularly under former managers Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes, has struggled to force his way into current Cottagers boss Martin Jol's starting XI this season as he has opted to pair Steve Sidwell with skipper Danny Murphy.

As a result, Etuhu, who is contracted to the club until summer 2014, could look to secure a move away from Craven Cottage to get some first-team football under his belt.

He told the Chronicle: "It's difficult if you only get 10 or 15 minutes.

The former Sunderland man, who could face his former team-mates at the Stadium of Light this weekend, is also worried he will lose his match fitness levels if he continues to just play a bit-part role.

"It's difficult to take," Etuhu added. "I do get frustrated but that's football.

"The worst thing about it is you lose your fitness and when you come in to play once every three or four weeks it's very difficult to enjoy. These periods are a test and I'm sure I'll come out the other side strong."

Bruce looking to avenge record
Steve Bruce is hoping his team's recent form will help him overcome Fulham for the first time as Sunderland manager.

Manager Steve Bruce is yet to win a game against Fulham since taking charge on Wearside.
Bruce believes his team has hit form just at the right time to help put that unwanted record to bed.
Last year Sunderland picked up a point at Craven Cottage, but lost 3-0 in the return fixture at the Stadium of Light.
The previous season saw both sides play out a goalless draw on Wearside, whilst Sunderland slipped to a 1-0 defeat in London.
Ahead of Saturday's game, Bruce told safc.com: "Since I moved to Sunderland we haven't had a good record against Fulham.
"Let's hope we can go and play and put that record to bed and get the result that we need this weekend.
"We've played well lately and we must maintain that. If we do that and keep the standards that we've set in recent games we'll be okay."

Like Sunderland, Fulham have picked up maximum points on only two occasions in the Barclays Premier League this season and both teams have ten points on the board.
"Martin Jol will have been hoping for a better start for Fulham in the Premier League," Bruce continued.
"Fulham are a very good team with some very good players. They're an established top-flight team and this is their 11th consecutive season in the league, which is a remarkable achievement for a club of that size.
"They've got good players up front. Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson are a real threat - it will be a tough game."

Duo back - Kelly blow for Jol

Aaron Hughes and Philippe Senderos are set to be fit for Fulham's trip to Sunderland but Stephen Kelly will miss out.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol has been boosted by Hughes and Senderos' recovery from thigh problems ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light and both should be in the squad.
However, Kelly has failed to recover from a groin problem which he picked up on international duty with the Republic of Ireland so will miss out.
It leaves Jol with a right-back dilemma as Kelly was lined up to replace Zdenek Grygera, who is out for the season after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Tottenham last time out.
Midfielder Steve Sidwell is also a major doubt after undergoing minor surgery to remove a hernia, but he will get a chance to prove his fitness in training before the long trip to the North East.
Simon Davies is still sidelined with a long-term knee injury.

Next four games vital - Bardsley
Phil Bardsley looks ahead to tomorrow's Barclays Premier League game against Fulham.

Phil Bardsley says Sunderland will kick off a "vital" run of games when Fulham arrive on Wearside this weekend.

Three of Sunderland's next four fixtures are at home, beginning with the visit of Martin Jol's Cottagers on Saturday.

The Black Cats then take on Wigan on November 26 and head to Wolves (December 4) before returning to Wearside to face Blackburn on December 11.

Steve Bruce's men have enjoyed an upturn in form recently and Bardsley says they will go into Saturday's game on a high and looking to put the narrow defeat to Manchester United behind them.

"We are progressing and going in the right direction we've got that belief back and the team are enjoying themselves," Bardsley said.
"The new lads are finding their feet and we're starting to show some real good form.

"So it's now up to us as a group to climb up the league and get some points on the board.

"Fulham is always a tough game. They're a well organised outfit but I think with the form we've been showing everyone's confident. The next four games are vital and hopefully we can take maximum points.

"They've had a few changes recently, Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes have both come and gone and now Martin Jol, but they never seem to change their style of play.

"They're always well organised and difficult to beat but if we perform like we have been I'm sure we can get the victory we want."

Hands off Dembele, says Jol
by DAN on NOVEMBER 18, 2011

Martin Jol has said he will do everything he can to keep Moussa Dembele at Craven Cottage.

The Belgian forward was quoted in a Belgian newspaper as saying that he would be interested in a move to Tottenham, who have been linked with another move for the 24 year-old, but later released a statement insisting he had been misquoted. Spurs have already had two bids for Dembele, worth around £10m, rejected and Jol is keen to keep hold of a player he clearly admires.

For me it's important that I've got good players. Maybe someone told you about Tottenham, I don't even know. There's a lot of interest in good players and I've got a few. It's about us to keep them here, and that's what we're trying to do.

Larsson misses Fulham clash

Sebastian Larsson is suspended for Sunderland's home clash with Fulham while Connor Wickham is out with a knee injury.
Sweden international Larsson will sit out the game after reaching five bookings for the campaign, while striker Wickham is facing weeks on the sidelines with the knee injury he suffered early on last time out at Manchester United.

Defender Titus Bramble, who was expected to play for the reserves in midweek after being fined for bringing the club into disrepute, also has a knee problem and is unavailable, as are keepers Simon Mignolet (fractured nose and eye socket) and Craig Gordon (knee).

Ahmed Elmohamady is likely to play against the Cottagers in place of Larsson and boss Steve Bruce admits his boots are tough ones to fill.

Bruce said: "When I bump into Sunderland fans, they haven't seen someone like Seb for a long time.

"We're a constant threat from set-pieces and to be fair, that's why we brought the kid here. He gives you something else.

"Not only is he a very good footballer, but when you've got something in your locker like he's got, you are a threat."

He added: "Every time we had a free-kick at Old Trafford, we were a threat because of his delivery. It makes such a difference to your team when you've got someone from set-pieces who can deliver.

"So we'll miss that, but it's what football is."

Sunderland will again have Keiren Westwood in goal as fellow keepers Simon Mignolet and Craig Gordon are injured.

Titus Bramble has a knee injury and joins Connor Wickham and Fraizer Campbell on the sidelines.

Fulham will be without defender Stephen Kelly after he suffered a groin injury on Republic of Ireland duty last week.

Aaron Hughes and Zdenek Grygera remain unavailable, but midfielder Steve Sidwell could return.

MATCH PREVIEW
Both Sunderland manager Steve Bruce and his Fulham counterpart Martin Jol believe the overall performance of their respective teams this season hasn't been as mediocre as their current league positions would suggest, but the two men will also be acutely aware that success is measured in points rather than performance.

The grim reality is that either could find themselves in the relegation zone by Saturday evening after both have endured remarkably similar starts to the season.

Fulham can point to the fact they remain the only team to take a point off Manchester City this season

Two wins, four draws, five defeats and 10 points are the bare statistics for both. A single home win was earned in convincing fashion - Sunderland thumped Stoke 4-0, Fulham hammered QPR 6-0 - before away successes against sides already mired in the relegation zone - Sunderland winning at Bolton, and Fulham at Wigan - kept them hovering just above the safety line.

Fulham can point to the fact they remain the only team to take a point off Manchester City this season and can recount hard luck stories experienced in the defeats against Everton and Tottenham. A draw at Liverpool and narrow defeats against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United suggest Sunderland probably should be higher up the table as well.

This is Fulham's 25th match of the season due to their commitments in the Europa League. Cottagers fans have relished their club's forays into Europe but may be frustrated that their team have won seven times - often against weaker opposition admittedly - compared to just twice domestically. Martin Jol has used only 20 players in the Premier League so far and it will be interesting to see how stretched their resources become.

The early-season pressure seems to have eased on Steve Bruce. He will have been heartened that the knee injury suffered by young striker Connor Wickham at Old Trafford should keep him out for weeks rather than months and must view this match and up-coming games against Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn as a real opportunity for his team to punch their weight. As defender Wes Brown put it this week: "it's time to man up".

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

Sunderland and Fulham have played exactly the same number of Premier League games: 391. Fulham have won 118 games to Sunderland's 103 and the Black Cats have lost 192 times compared with Fulham's 158.
Sunderland have failed to score in five of their last six Premier League matches against Fulham, including any of the last four.
But Fulham have only won two of their last nine league games against Sunderland - although they did win their last meeting 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland

Sunderland have conceded fewer goals than Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham this season.
But they have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League games at home.
Four of the six goals scored direct from free-kicks this season have come in Sunderland matches: two for and two against.
Fulham

Fulham have won just 12 of their last 100 away matches in the Premier League - one of those was against Sunderland last season.
Against Tottenham, Fulham became the first side since the 2006-07 season to have 13 shots on target in a Premier League match and still lose.
Danny Murphy has been substituted in his last eight appearances for Fulham.
Fulham have used just 20 players in the Premier League so far, fewer than any other team.

Sunderland's Phil Bardlsey says Fulham game at Stadium of Light could help define Premier League season

PHIL Bardsley admits Sunderland's next four games could define their season.

Tomorrow's Stadium of Light clash with Fulham is the first of four encounters against sides lying alongside Sunderland in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Despite taking just 10 points from the opening 11 games, full-back Bardsley insists Sunderland must be confident that they can put their campaign into gear.

Bardsley told SportMail: "They're possibly defining games of our season.

"They're massive games against Fulham, Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn.

"They're not easy teams to play against, but looking at them on paper, you fancy your chances.

"We know they'll be difficult though and we know we'll have to be at our best like we were at Old Trafford.

"Hopefully we can get off to a good start with three points against Fulham."

Three Premier League clubs targeting Juventus striker

Juventus striker could be heading to England

Juventus striker Amauri looks set to make a move to a London club after admitting that he is "counting the days" until January when he can leave the Italian giants.

The Brazilian-born Italian international has found himself continually left out of the Juventus starting side.

In anticipation of his leaving the club for free when the transfer window opens, the 31-year-old has been linked with a move to England and Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham top of the list to receive the striker.

"I hope that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible," he told Sky Italia

"I have no other option but to leave Juventus in January."

Amauri has also been linked with a possible move to France but says that he does not know what is happening in reality.

"There are people who are working on a move for me and it'll be their job to find me a new club."

Echo Jury: Kieran Kirby looks ahead to the visit of Fulham

FULHAM travel to Stadium of Light, their second visit to the North East this season following on from their game at the Sports Direct Arena.

Fulham don't travel particularly well but generally we help teams and players get out of bad runs. Hopefully this isn't the case tomorrow.

Fulham have some good attacking players in Zamora, Johnson, Dempsey, Duff and Dembele but our defence looked good against Man Utd.

I'd start with the same back four with O'Shea to miss out. The recent form of Kieran Richardson has been very impressive, long may it continue.

We're missing Larsson through suspension which will, more than likely, see Elmohamady come in to the side. We need to see a vast improvement in him. I would play Sess wide right and push Colback on to the left and play Vaughan alongside Catts, but I think Bruce will start with Elmo.

Ji should start up front alongside Bendtner – he had a good second half at Man Utd. Hopefully that continues.

I think it will be a tight game, a little nervy at times.

Prediction: Sunderland 1 Fulham 1

Murphy's Law: Why Fulham must get something at Sunderland

"What lies ahead this weekend is a trip to the Stadium of Light, followed with matches against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea, all before the turn of the year."

Normally I feel that International friendlies are a waste of time. Your club's best players often return injured and/or tired, and the teams are chopped and changed between, and during, matches new players are given little chance to show what they can do.

However this two week break from club football has come at the right time for Fulham - players and fans alike.

After the football Gods decided that Fulham were not worthy of even a point from the last two home games (their intervention can be the only explanation for what occurred in both games), the international break has given time to forget about what has happened and focus on what lies ahead.

What lies ahead this weekend is a trip to the Stadium of Light, followed with matches against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea, all before the turn of the year. With this tough run in mind it is vital Fulham come away from this weekend with something.

Fulham should find Bobby Zamora, Damien Duff and Stephen Kelly on a high after a successful two weeks their national teams, Zamora winning his first start for England and the Irish duo securing qualification for Euro 2012 (Well done the Boys in Green).

It is another international player that is causing me concern and that is, Norwegian left back John Arne Riise. Matthew Briggs must be scratching his head that he has had to make do with Europa League and Carling Cup action.

Fulham also have Baird or Kelly who have done well at left back but the manager constantly picks Riise.

Riise was signed 10 years too late in his Liverpool days he would run up and down the pitch turning defence into attack and had a decent final ball.

Riise IS willing to get forward and try a 'Hollywood' shot or pass (which normally has the fans behind the goal ducking for cover).

He will then take a stroll back forcing Hangeland to constantly cover for him (poor Brede has to do this at international level as well).

I'm glad Fulham seem to have put an end to him taking every free kick now they need to stop searching for him with every attack because at the end of day he his first and foremost a defender.

In his recent Full Time interview Riise stated that as a young boy of 14 he used to get up at 6.00am and go for a run in order to improve his stamina, well Johnny boy I suggest you start setting that alarm for 5.30am.

Martin Jol talked about wanting to lower the age of the squad, now is the time to give youth a chance.

Fulham Preview - Home, Novemebr 19

SUNDERLAND RETURN to Premier League action this weekend with a visit from strugglers Fulham.

It's been an odd sort of season for the Cottagers who have doubtless suffered thanks to their Europa League involvement.

Under new boss Martin Jol, the 2011-12 campain began in earnest back on June 30 with a 3-0 win at home to NSI Runavik. The season had ended just a handful of weeks before.

Of course, Fulham's squad is super-fit in order to cope with their early start to the season and continued involvement in Europe, where they currently sit second in Group K. However, with a fairly thin squad it has been a tricky balancing act for Jol.

Despite rotating to the best of his ability the Dutchman has seen the West London outfit win just twice in the league this season and thus they currently reside in 16th place.

Jol does however have the fervent backing of his chairman, Mohammed Al-Fayed. That backing though could well just be in order to stick the knife in for former gaffer Mark Hughes who resigned at the end of last season. Al-Fayed has been quick to heap praise on himself for 'rescuing' the former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers man whilst also lamenting his decision to leave by declaring Jol as 'more handsome'.

Backing the former Ajax and Tottenham boss in the transfer market has been equally importat for the colourful former Harrods owner with no fewer than nine summer arrivals - although at least three of those were made with one eye on the future.

Former FC Twente forward Bryan Ruiz was purchased with the present in mind and the flamboyant Costa Rican playmaker hasn't disappointed. Ruiz may have made just one Premier League start so far but Fulham fans saw exactly what he is capable with when he deftly lofted over Tim Howard in the 3-1 loss to Everton last month. An overall scoring record of 62 in 122 league games for Gent and Twente suggests there is more to come however.

Ferocious full-back John-Arne Riise is a name well-known to the top-flight having enjoyed seven years with Liverpool before a three-year stint in Italy with Roma. Riise helped bring the Champions League to Anfield during his time on Merseyside and built something of a reputation for a howitzer of a free-kick. He's yet to register as a White but it won't be long. Riise is also now at the same club as his younger brother, Bjorn-Helge - currently on-loan at Portsmouth.

Tempestuous ex-Palermo midfield schemer Patjim Kasami is one who with time on his side looks like a prospect whilst also featuring in recent weeks for Jol's side. The 19 year-old Swiss-born midfielder has Macedonian roots but elected to play for Switzerland and has represented them at U17, U18 and U21 levels.

As well as the new faces, the ever-reliable names remain - Brede Hangeland, Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Mark Schwarzer all still on the books. And, with that tried and tested blend of youth and experience you fancy Fulham will put aside their European distractions sooner rather than later and head up the league table.

Jol has something of a crisis at right-back with Zdenek Grygera and Stephen Kelly both injured. Simon Davies is a long-term injury.

Sunderland will be without the suspended Sebastian Larsson whilst John O'Shea and Connor Wickham are both injured.

Titus Bramble is not yet match-fit following internal suspension. David Meyler got 90 minutes for the reserves on Wednesday and could push for a place on the bench.

Likely Line-ups:

Sunderland: Westwood; Bardsley, Brown, Turner, Richardson; Elmohamady, Colback, Cattermole (c), Vaughan, Sessegnon; Bendtner.

Fulham: Schwarzer; Baird, Hangeland, Briggs, Riise; Dempsey, Murphy (c), Sidwell, Duff; Dembele & Zamora.
