Title: Renaming the Riverside Stand - Al-Fayed Tribute (merged threads)
Post by: zzamora on November 22, 2011, 10:12:24 PM
This has been brought up countless numbers of times but i've been thinking about it.

With Man Utd recently renaming their biggest stand to the "Sir Alex Ferguson Stand" I think that with the redevelopment of the Riverside Stand it should be renamed the Mohamed Al-Fayed Stand, with a possible statue where that disgusting "MJ" statue is at the moment.

The renaming of the stand would only serve as tribute to what this man has done for our club.

I'm relatively new to this club, but I agree with my young but learned friend. I can't think of anyone who deserves this honor more than MAF.

Absolutely. The trouble is, it's not really the done thing to build one in honour of yourself.

Mind you, if anyone would.....

I would go along with that idea be good to show him how we appreciate what he has done for the club.

Exactly Scrumpy so where must the impetus for it come from? A toadying lackey or from the loving and grateful Fulham masses?

Could Riversiders be persuaded to take huge 'Welcome To The Mohamed Al-Fayed Stand' banners in?

I'm in favour of that .... with the proviso that the statue isn't a scaled up version of the MAF gnome that is on sale in the club shop.  fp.gif

I wonder what happened to the statue (waxwork?) of MAF that used to be in Harrods? perhaps it could welcome guests to the 'new' corporate boxes?

Perhaps we could put the star of David on the stand.  If he doesn't like it, he can go to Hell, or Chelsea...........

Tell that to Madejski/Dave Whelan etc

If we petitioned for the new stand to be re-named as fans, it'd be brilliant and wouldn't have the stigma of renaming it yourself. Who deals with that kind of thing at the club?

I'm afraid the Lawrie Sanchez Memorial Number 2 Cubicle in the Hammy end bogs would create a health hazard as the line to make deposits would be way out the door

I was thinking about this during the meeting I just had, I don't believe that during his tenure in charge of the club MAF will erect (tee hee hee) a statue of himself or re-name any part of the stadium or infact any part of the club. Although he is an elaborate fellow I think self-glorification is not something that would interest MAF.

he certainly seems to be more laid back during his later years, take that gnome for example. What other chairman in the league would commission such a thing!

I love MAF and I am so thankful for what he has done to this beautiful club by the Thames, but until he hangs up his boots I don't think anything will be done.

But thats just me

He definitely has a certain amount of self love, after all he added the 'Al' to his name himself. A mark of high class where he comes from, but I agree - it should be us to petition for it. Has anyone ever done an online petition and how many do we think would be needed?

That's been un-used for a very long time as far as I am aware. I don't think a commitee or organisation etc needs to be made for this. I'd suggest a quite simple petition (name/email) that is advertised on twitter/messageboards/facebook would get a substantial number. If it fell below say 5000, then it could easily be arranged to collect further signatures outside the ground and then presented along with the online petition to the club. After all, unless they have sights on selling naming rights, why wouldn't they go with this?

I think I'm in a minority of one in not liking this idea - but no offence intended to those who are, and obviously if it did get going, and there's lots of support for it, then so be it (at least it would be better that it came from fans, than from the man himself; I just hate those egotistical folks who rename stands/grounds after themselves - much as Dave Whelan has been great for Wigan, in what mad, egotistical world does it seem a good idea to put a huge rotating DW outside the ground!?).

Anyway, back to my objection: I just think grounds should reflect the history on the pitch (as in the Johnny Haynes stand) or the location.  Admittedly, that might give us the 'Lost to a Spawny Goal in Hamburg', the 'Alan Taylor' (ouch) or the 'AutoWindscreens Shield Semi-Finalists (Southern Section)' stand... .

Another minor objection: Mo (and I am really grateful for what he's done for the club) doesn't really need anything named after him - he's not exactly starved of publicity; a REALLY radical step, which would be a real departure (and I can't see it happening), would be to name the stand after an ordinary fan (perhaps picked at random from a pot of nominees - e.g. I never knew her, and wouldn't want to presume, but someone like Mary, who organised the coach travel for years, is the sort of figure I'm thinking of).

Anway, whatever it ends up being called, the main thing is that the stand gets built, so Craven Cottage can be even better ... .

Arguably Al-Fayed is an integral party of our on pitch history. You avatar shows yourself at the Europa League Final- would you have been there without Al-Fayed?

And its to honour the man that has not only saved our club but rebuilt it back to the great hay days of Johnny Haynes- he's as much deserving of a stand as the Maestro is.

Without Mo we wouldn't be were we are today. I think we can all agree that even if the club didnt re-name it, something like this shows our appreciation. He isn't a young man and far too often we wait until someone has gone before commemorating (Sp?) them; lets see if we can show our appreciation to MAF whilst he is still around.

Well, we did commemorate Johnny Haynes with a statue and named a stand after him. If that is the criteria to get a stand named after you, I believe Michael Jackson is next in line... :014:

Well, we did commemorate Johnny Haynes with a statue and named a stand after him. If that is the criteria to get a stand named after you, I believe Michael Jackson is next in line... :014:
...and that was after he had gone. Let's celebrate someone now.

That's all absolutely true, and I do think it's intrinsically different to if there'd been an Al Fayed stand within a couple of years of him arriving.  It also makes the world of difference that this is, as the responses to this thread show, a popular feeling from fans. As I (hope) is clear from my post, I'm not trying to be mean-spirited about it, nor to do down the good efforts of those who've set up the opinion poll, though I appreciate it might read like that: I've a preference for stands to be named after players, etc. but if there's a chairman who deserves a stand named after him it's certainly Al Fayed.

Obviously, in our hearts Mo has a strong claim in the naming stakes...

..but what about our own, our very own George Cohen ?....We've never managed to win a World Cup without him playing !

I dont believe in naming stands after people, Haynes has his deserved statue, but to me it's the Stevenage rd stand, always will be. As for one of Englands/ Fulham's best ever players, i've never seen him play, you're younger than me, so we both are relying on  elders knowledge. To me Gordon Davies is an all time God, but he probably would be below even Eddie Johnson if both were still in the same squad. Only kidding EJ was proper dung  :hook:

Yeah - can't even find footage of Haynes on Youtube. Just finished Bobby Charlton's England book though, he is full of praise for Haynes.

I actually feel really sorry for our only World Cup medal holder, and legendary defender, George Cohen. He's probably sitting in the Riverside Stand weeping and shivering and praying "please.. please FoFfers, name this stand for me...!"

...as he brushes himself down and embarks on another tour of Craven Cottage.

I can't really concentrate on any physical petitioning etc for now, but if daily spamming of twitter/TIFF/FoF etc can produce a decent amount over the new few weeks then it'd be good to discuss with someone taking it to the Cottage.
I don't know if a form of flyering with a link to the petition would be an option, or whether an actual petition to be signed at the ground would be possible?
Suggestions welcome!

Mitch,

Sorry, without going back across all the pages to look, where has this petition been advertised?

Perhaps the offal, FUSA, and the numerous Fulham FC sites in foreign lands?
Getting a local or national rag on board, or getting on one of the TV football shows would both provide exposure together some endorsement, perhaps.

I've solely pushed it on here, twitter and TIFF. I'm not a member of the official messageboard, so would appreciate someones help with plugging it on there - any offers?

There has been, so far, no tangible petition or generating of interest and I imagine this would be important. I remember (I think) BTTC were allowed to set up a stall on the Stevenage Road to sign. Am I right in thinking that?

I suppose the next step would be to approach the club and ask them what form of approach they'd deem most acceptable/interesting. Tommy Guthrie is fan liaison and the lovely Sarah Brookes has signed it herself, so I guess I'll start with them.

Mitch, I know you are pretty active on the ol' Twitter as I follow you, it may be worth forwarding to Dave Kidd (Fulham fan and Journo), Simon Peach (Covers SW6, Southampton Fan, followed by loads of FFC lot) , Jacob Murtagh (who writes for the FulhamChronicle) even our man WhiteNoise (the patron ST of FFC, well over 2,000 followers I think) could generate a couple hundred more sigs.

Even Murphs wife, Shwarz, Moussa and Orlando Sá might give it an RT.

Moussa, Rufus, Joanna Taylor, Sarah Brookes and a few others were kind enough to retweet, plus our own White Noise.

I did message Dave Kidd and Simon Peach, but no response. I'll try again as I know they probably get a lot of spam. Will see if I can get Orlando Sa and MS to RT as they are fairly active.

I do think we need a more tangible form of letting people know ie leaflets with the link on at a match in Jan for example (I couldn't afford it this month!).
