Transfer window opens

The summer transfer window began once clubs had concluded their final domestic fixture of the 2011–12 season, but many transfers will only officially go through on 1 July because the majority of player contracts finish on 30 June. The window will remain open until 23:00 BST on 31 August 2012.

Players out of contract can be signed before 1st July - as Mark Schwarzer was on 22nd May 2008 & Zoltan Gera on 11th June 2008.

It is also possible for players to agree deals between end of last season and begining of July that only come into effect on July 1st.

I'm starting my pre season at about the same time so I don't get caught out. In an almost sadistic way I can't wait to reapply myself to the disciplne match day requires but in the meantime no lunchtime pints or footie burgers on a saturday and no belting it down to the station to catch the train as its pulling out. Post Olympics I might put some work in to shave a second or two off the platform two sprint.

In a totally cynical way the key date currently omitted is when the tele changes the first twelve weeks of fixtures to suit the armchair pundits.

Development squad time....but has to be said we have some good players in that, so will be worth some trips to these games.

There is, I believe, some plan in place that will prevent any matches being played in London whilst the Olympics, and possibly Paralympics are taking place. This is to include friendlies.

It's down to there not being enough police to go round.

If this is true, then it's going to be a long wait to see a match at the Cottage, and we'll probably open the season with 4 or 5 away fixtures. Joy.

So air fare for the first, but no jacket required for the second.
